Review: Head North - "Arrows" EP

After months of hiding, which has entailed the latter part of the year polishing the edges of their debut effort, Buffalo New York’s Head North have finally come out of the smoke with the debut EP, titled Arrows.

The title-track signals the start of the record, from the bold claims of “we swore we’d break this world in two”, Head North lures listeners into their own parallel. Precision is evident throughout the record, connecting the bridging sentiments of growing up and musical tones which narrate the themes. This is evident in the transition from the aforementioned track as it launches into “Stay Young”, which is self-explanatory in projecting the common notions of being oblivious to the value of being young. Vocalist James Celeste mirrors the arc and trajectory of the soaring guitars, continuously overwhelming listeners throughout.

“See You Next Tuesday” starts off with the distinct tone and rich depth of Celeste’s voice, with a choral-esque vocal harmony that accentuates his tone. The song is laced in a nineties-esque alternative rock sound that would’ve been prone to constant rotation on college rock radio decades ago.

Musically, “Arrows” is ambitious, latching onto a broad scope of sounds. “They Made Me Do It” is an example of the band's expansive sound that delves into the streams of darker tumultuous waters. Unfortunately, “They Made Me Do It” is dragged down by the lackluster lyrics, however sonically the song is redeemed slightly by the stripped section in the last chorus, which is bridled with unrestrained melancholia.

On “You’re A Knock-Out, Kid” Head North grant a nod to the strains of hardcore-influenced pop punk with its ruckus brief stomps of double bass and chromatic hardcore-esque riffs. “You’re Knock-Out, Kid” is a vast contrast to “They Made Me Do It”, brandishing an infectious poppy sensibility, which highlights just one of Head North's musical shades.

“Act Your Age” draws the record to a close, where the band outstretch their hands collectively to nose-bleeding heights as a last chance to show the divine excesses of their world. “Arrows” is a thoroughly ambitious effort, engaging with a range of sounds, however the largest downfall on the record is the lack of lyrical creativity, which stands as the anchor of the material.

Throwback: All Heart - "There's No Place Like Home"

All Heart was a Hawaiian five-piece that broke up in January of 2011, and although they don't take us too far back, a few of us still sorely miss them. The band's name fit their essence extremely well, with a sound that was a perfect balance between pop punk and hardcore, unmatched to this day. In 2008 the band released the Slumber Party EP, later a self-titled EP in 2009, and finally, the debut album, There's No Place Like Home, in 2010, which was also ICE GRILL$ Records' first release. Sonically, the record was much more polished and breathed new life into some older tracks, while also taking the band to the next level. Despite hailing from a rather remote location, All Heart managed to tour the full US and even Japan. These are all reasons why I believe that their time was cut too short. Following their demise, several members then went on to form a melodic hardcore group called Ill Stance, which recently played its final show in Honolulu.

Whenever I listen to All Heart, I go through their entire discography, which happens quite often. They're just that kind of band to me. The self-titled EP is still one of my personal all-time favourites. Review: Misser - "Distancing" EP

About a year has passed since Misser debuted its fantastic album Every Day I Tell Myself I’m Going To Be A Better Person, and the first notable difference between the two releases is the length of titles. Distancing finds itself exactly where an EP should: an effort to tide the fans over, to show them that their band is still around, writing music and evolving simultaneously.

The first three tracks of Distancing showcase the Misser that has become well known and loved by the majority of its scene. Each of these songs would fit in well with anything off the band’s debut. Nevertheless, it’s clear that Tim Landers’ cutting voice has stepped into a more prominent role to complement Brad Wiseman’s guttural yells. The change is welcome, though, showing two sides of the same emotional coin from two seemingly clashing vocalists who create angst-ridden harmonies.

The penultimate track “Alone, Die” is Distancing’s standout song while running at just under two minutes. The song’s entire structure is full of catchy riffs and lyrics, revealing it as the all-killer-no-filler track off Distancing. Misser, not surprisingly, makes another song of heartache and more blatant disgust become one of the catchiest tracks in its repertoire.

While “Alone, Die.” shows Misser turning everything the band excels in up to eleven, “Slow It Down // Write It Out” is something unheard of and new from the pop-punk outfit. The mid-tempo number is another short song at under two and a half minutes, but the length isn’t what’s vastly different; instead, Misser shows that it take off the gain and throw some extra musicianship into its music while still creating a solid tune. “Slow It Down // Write It Out” isn’t amazing or anything that’s astonishingly new; rather, it just shows that there’s more to Misser than meets the eye, and that is always a welcome sign of big things to come from a band that should be on everyone’s radar.
