BLUE + WHITE DONE RIGHT Time Frame: 5 Weeks This family in the La Verne Heights gated community asked me to help them give their formal living room and dining room a face-lift. They requested a usable, kid-friendly, comfortable, yet timeless space that could be used for every day normal family life. Unlike most people, they use their dining room everyday and wanted the same to go for their living room. Colors the owner likes are blue, green, brown and grey. Going off of that, rather than a pass-through space on the way to another room, I created welcoming rooms to lounge, relax and entertain. Starting with the base, I had new carpet installed, a fresh coat of white on the trim painted and I designed a custom wood mantel and had built over the existing fireplace. Then I layered in an ivory palette of furnishings which I accented with a modern and vibrant blue and white ikat for the custom drapes, which I had hung above the sunburst window to bring height to the space. The ottoman, which doubles as a cocktail table, is covered in a navy linen as are the 2 new dining head chairs. Custom 2-tone, banded drapes were hung in the dining and a 4 piece modular bar was added for storage and entertaining. The rooms were finished off with custom framed family photos to sit atop the new mantel and a trip to Home Goods for decor and accessories. The result is a livable living room and dining room that are stylish and welcoming.
LEGION OF BOOM ROOM Time Frame: 6 Weeks // Budget: $17,000 // Design Fee: $2,500 Brandon Browner and his family needed help with their game room in their home in Ganesha Hills, CA. They already purchased a large sectional to watch their over-sized theater screen and a pool table. Their goal was to make the room as dark during the day as it was at night for optimal TV viewing. What started out as a masculine color scheme warped into a Seattle Seahawks color scheme. This worked perfectly, since Brandon is a professional football player and previously played for the Seahawks as a member of the Legion of Boom. He requested his jersey and teammate’s jerseys be professionally framed so we could display them. I had custom black-out window coverings made and installed high to block the daylight. A custom cabinet in a slate-blue finish was made to house all the audio equipment. I had the pool table re-felt in a grey to coordinate with the room’s decor. The walls were painted Benjamin Moore Pewter and all trim received a fresh coat of Cloud Cover. The finishing touch to block out the light was a large, custom sliding door I had made to separate this room from the family room. The space ended up being a great place to hang out with friends and family while reflecting Brandon’s personality. To see before images of this room, click here.

GLIMMER OF GOLD Time Frame: 6 Weeks // Budget: $20,000 // Design Fee: $3,750 This young family owns a home in Ganesha Hills in Pomona. After living with “apartment” furniture for a couple of years, they decided it was time to upgrade and invest in furnishings that were more suited to their taste and lifestyle. Family friendly and comfortable, but still stylish, is what was requested. I achieved that by selecting quality/durable pieces of furniture for the foundation of the room and then decorated with accessories that have a bit of a “glam” factor, which can easily be changed out when they want a new look. I designed a custom wood bar top with steel supports for seating at the kitchen peninsula. Before there was no seating in the kitchen. This helps join the kitchen and family room and provides a spot for the kids to eat and do homework. The fireplace was updated with a new custom wood mantle and matching hearth. I had the walls painted from a yellow to a neutral greige. Custom window coverings include grey silk drapes in the family room and pleated Roman shades in the kitchen. For a bit of added sparkle, I replaced the 2 existing pendants with 2 mini chandeliers over the peninsula. The overall look is family friendly, but stylish with a bit of sparkle.
