Vladislav Kvartalny is a young talented printmaker and Exlibris (Ex Libris) artist from Belarus. He has been introduced to Christos Giannakos by the Dutch Exlibris collector Willem Van De Weerd in Spring 2008. He created an Exlibris for Christos Giannakos, the "Virgin and Unicorn" C3,C6 in March 2008. The work was really good and C.G., asked him to create for him 6 more works under the same subject. The series "Women in Odyssey". Exlibris and free graphics. The work is great, with high expression of faces. Very detailed work.Very delicated with gentle and noble erotic images. Enjoy the 3 first works of "Women in Odyssey". Look at the faces of Circe, Calypso, Sirens and Odysseus. The performance of emotions in their faces, is magnificent.

XOTARIS

Xotaris in the Cretan dialect means wanderer, traveler, whoever comes from another place (Xotaris < exo “out”). Eva and Christos used to be such wanderers - Xotarides. They gathered experiences and different material, precious material from all over the world, especially from developing countries. Precious works of art, local handicrafts, engravings, sculptures. Old household items and in general whatever bears the imprint of traditional work, artistry and labour.

Even when they had to stop travelling, the Xotaris inside them could not calm down. They were in search of a place where they could expose all those things they had gathered throughout the years. They were looking for a treasury where all these items could fit together as well as to the place that would host them.

Natives of places with a rather sour history, Eva from Crete and Minor Asia and Christos from Pontus (Black Sea) and Mani, they soon realized that the only place that could possibly harmoniously host all these thoughts was Crete. Having many friends in this unique part of Greece, they finally found an old house at the village of Ano Archanes, made of stone around 1860. Andreas helped them to have it restored. There was no better place than this old mansion to host all this material gathered within thirty years. And it turned out that there was no better place to host such a house where every stone has something to say on the house’s long history.

A wonderful two floor gallery was created at the old wine-press, where some elements were kept to remind the process of making wine out of grapes: the stone pumps, the basin and other similar staff. Christos II, friend of Eve and Christos, gave his ideas so that this undertaking could travel through cyberspace, setting off the magnificence of the place 150 years later, together with all the art works it will host.

Finally, we needed something more; a cocoon to secure and make this undertaking creative. This is how Christos and Eve created the Cultural Foundation Panagiotis Giannakos. Panagiotis Giannakos, Christos’ father, used to say something very important; whatever you do, do it correctly. He talked as a traditional artist, sculptor and painter. “Do it with passion in order to stand trials and aspersions.” He was the first collector that Christos met, a person that collected historical press-cuttings. Precious cuttings like the one from the newspaper “Romios” dated back in 1821 or the whole newspaper "ACROPOLIS" dated back in 1940. Pieces that exude a feeling of sanctity and uniqueness when read nowadays; a collection that needs to be treated with respect and carefulness. But this collection is strictly personal and belongs to Christos’ and Eve's family.

The Rock

THE ROCK

A rock that breathes.
A live rock.

This is how I felt when, passing through the tall stone wall of the yard, I saw the building that stood there for more than 150 years. I could not believe that it dominated the place proudly for such a long time the same way I could not imagine how it would turn into an art gallery. But it is always the wildest dreams that make you want to struggle and fly as well. This is what it used to be and this is how still is.

Live, wonderful, enhancing, powerful and imposing; an old mansion, a castle house. This is how they call all these old buildings surrounded by high walls that enclose all the dwellings needed at that time; the dominating main house, the wine-press, the warehouses, the oven and many other auxiliary rooms. A poem made of stone.

Sat on a very old stone bench, I was thinking of the children that used to play in these ideal hidings. Enchanted by all these images, with a strong desire to disappear into the hot stone like a lizard, with a strong desire to get absorbed by this Doric stone, I heard Andreas’ voice like a thunder into my mind.

“Why not making a museum out of it?”

So loudly I thought that if there is a place that can host a Xotaris’ thoughts and experiences, then this is the one.

Ever since we had to fight with our ideas of how we could make this ideal place, magical in the game it played with time – the great sculptor, leaving him to set off its beauty, wear its Sunday best, how this stone that seemed to be left there by angels hands could turn into an art gallery, safe and beautiful; able to live to eternity.

So, I answered Andreas: “Let’s do it. Let’s do it together.”

Let yourself wander through the pictures of this magical image theater. Older and more recent photos that shall make you feel part of its magic as well as to confirm that what was built, it was built correctly. With a simple, severe beauty.

An art gallery for artists and students to meet together. A place for visitors and collectors to admire. A treasurer of a beautiful collection.

This will be the shell, the crypt where art shall get armed against bad taste and every day life.

Enjoy it and feel free to send us your ideas.
I met Oldrich Kulhanek in his atelier in Prague, in January 2009. We have shared many thoughts and ideas about art, wine, poetry. From that time we have started working together on commissioned projects like Erotikon. Secondly Onirikon came to complete Erotikon. And who really knows what comes after, especially from the time that have created a friendship between us. Many thanks to Robert Moydl that organized this first meeting.

The Erotic Constant by Peter Lazarov

The Erotic constant

There will never be a homogeneous culture which does not incorporate eroticism in its most recognizable and prominent appearances. The history of art teems with examples.
Since the beginning of civilized life the act of pro-creation has been recognized as major driving force for mankind in general sense. Rites, ceremonies, festivities involving eroticism were the heart of any communal activity at any given time. Can we imagine the cultures of India, Egypt and Greece without the images of fertility and acts of godly drive for sex?
Sex, erotic or orgiastic has become ‘vulgar’ with the triumph of the new religions, but did they vanish from our makeup as humans?
Needless to say, in our eyes the Greco-Roman art is ‘sexier’ than most of other images from old times. As Europeans we recognize the evocative eroticism of myths and poetry, sculpture and painting on vases, as our own heritage.
Eros is still a building block of our contemporary culture. Constructing my humble prints I search for those images. No matter which ‘Eros’ – the masculine or the feminine – I am aware of its presence. I think that ‘Eros’ does not indicate gender at all – just an important doorway toward the ‘inner space’ of the work, which normally explores themes of existential nature. I try to be true to my concept/idea only within the limits of my own personal experience. If there should be magic one should go for it with open heart.
One thing is certain: we may be ‘sex’ by nature but ‘eroticism’ is the path to the dreams of immortality, to one youthful Arcadia, where senses and reason are happily re-consolidated.
This is the constant longing of our soul – its quest of seeking eternal values through the senses.

In the photo you can see the Erotic couple - a lithograph by the Bulgarian artist - engraver Robert Baramov

About drawing

We considered this design as a component part of painting and then we tried to think of it as a spiritual work. But we should also see it as an independent work of art. In principle, it is the same thing. As we can see, when a painter has a clear vision of his painting, he draws painting. There is no need for him to make a drawing on the board. Sketching outlines – the famous cernes- betrays painting weakness. However, a painter never stops drawing; otherwise his work would be a creation on the spur of the moment. As he works with colours, he draws, only that his drawings are inside his mind and his lines remain imaginary. Still, when he has nothing but paper and pencil, his drawings are no more imaginary; they appear on a paper. A few lines are enough to make the plan complete and perfect. This impression is due to the plainness of means and the imprint of the spiritual act.

We could say that in a drawing we see the spirit in action.
Lines offer the necessary perceptible base, but esthetically, they are not self existent. An original designer does not play with lines, he draws, he writes down the forms that his mind lends in the things that he conceives, and his mind cannot spell anything without giving it a concrete form.

If now the designer is a native painter, then, with the few means he owns, he can make paintings out of drawings.
