I remember back to January '09 when Sarah and I stepped away from First Baptist and started Crossover Athletics. We had no clue what we were about to go through but we have seen God do amazing things in and through us.

This past year we saw some great things. We started summer sports camps for elementary age students. It was great to encourage young people to be active, stay healthy and teach them how to follow Christ. We also started a fall flag football league in Lexington and saw our Spring league grow to the largest number yet. In 2011 we had the opportunity to work with over 400 athletes on a personal level in our community. We just don't speak to large groups but we get to know them. We remember their names, talk with their families and encourage them to achieve their God-given potential.

We teamed up with John Middleton to start a street hockey league for youth. Who knew that hockey would get any traction in the south...but it did! We had a blast learning and playing hockey. We ended the season by taking a group of kids to the Charleston Stingrays hockey game and touring their facility. It was an incredible experience for everyone involved!

Our basketball ministry has grown with the direction of Sam Brown being our director. Sam is great at working with young people and encouraging them to walk with Jesus. We are gearing up for a big 2012 travel basketball season.

I want to thank everyone who helped us achieve what we did in 2011. It's because of the generosity of individuals and businesses that we are able to share the message of Christ with young athletes. We can't say "Thank You" enough for all you've done for our ministry.

2011 was great for our ministry and we are excited about the direction of Crossover and what all God has in store for us in 2012. God Bless,

Thank you to our business sponsors! All games were very competitive and fun to watch. However, Crossover's mission is so much more than just trying to get wins and losses, it's about helping the participants understand their God-given potential. Our goal is to equip them with necessary tools for life that will help them achieve and pursue all God has for them. Our coaches lead team devotions and challenge their team each week. It's been a great season and looking forward to the Spring League!

Spring League registration opens February 1st!

Here are the results from our tournament. I wanted to let you know of an opportunity to partner with us to impact students in Lexington.

Crossover Athletics is a non-profit 501(c)3 ministry that relies on the generosity of churches for our programs. We partner with churches to conduct our leagues, clinics, tournaments and travel teams. Currently we use the fields of Fellowship Baptist church for our flag football league and Willow Ridge Church for our basketball academy program. We are very thankful for their generosity.

However, we are in need of a vehicle to store and transport supplies from location to location. As of now we do not have a vehicle that is capable of transporting and storing our supplies. Through a few personal contacts we've found an old uhaul vehicle that will solve our needs. We need to raise $2,500 for the vehicle. The uhaul truck will be able to store all of our supplies and allow us to have room to grow with future supplies we will need. Will you prayerfully consider partnering with us to help meet the need. Your donation is tax-deductible.

Here are a few ways you can help:

1) You can donate online at: Crossover Athletics Truck Donation

2) Share our story with friends and family.

3) Pray for our ministry and the impact on student athletes.

Stay tuned to our blog for updates on how close we are to reaching our goal!

CROSSOVER BASEBALL!

This is what it's all about! Rick Carter heads up our baseball ministry and God is really moving. Our baseball ministry consists of writing devotions and being the "spiritual coach" for various travel teams. Each time they play it gives Rick and opportunity to invest in the lives of the players. He leads them through a devotion time, then prays with the guys.

We feel God is moving with our baseball ministry. We recently received permission to set-up Crossover tents throughout the state at travel tournaments to give families the opportunity to learn and hear God's word during their weekend tournaments. We are thrilled to partner with area churches to help in this mission. Continue to pray for this ministry as we begin to spread and equip people to carry the mission.

Here's an excerpt from Rick in an email updating people what's happening in our baseball ministry.

A little story for you all - One of the kids on our team has been dealing with his parents very nasty divorce over the last year or so. At a tourney a while back he asked me if we could have devotions on Saturday and Sunday instead of just Sunday - I told him absolutely! His mom came up to me last week and thanked me for doing the devotions and that she had started getting them back in their local church when she has the kids. This woman had never even expressed any interest in our devotions but God was working in her heart. We don't always know what's going on with people. We just need to be faithful and keep Jesus out front.

If you are interested in partnering with us and possibly setting up a tent contact us, info@crossoverathletics.org.

3-on-3 Basketball Tournament Results!

A big thanks to Riverland Hills Baptist Church and their sports ministry RecLife for hosting the 2011 Crossover 3-on-3 Basketball Challenge. Our day consisted of a double elimination tournament with middle school, high school, and adult divisions. All divisions were highly competitive and fun to watch. In between games we had our 3 point competition. We had 3 rounds with the top half advancing to the next round. In the finals, players were given 45 seconds to shoot from their favorite spot on the court. Jordan Davis blew away the competition with 12 shots made. Thanks to everyone that participated and hope to see you at our events in the future!

3 point competition Champion- Jordan Davis

Jordan Davis brought home the championship after hitting 12 3point shots in 45 seconds. Teams from Irmo, Lexington, Columbia battled it out in a double elimination tournament to see who had the best team.

Our semi-final game was intense with the RecLife "Green" against "REVOLUTION". Revolution pulled it out in the end with a 1 point victory by stopping the Green team on their extra point try with 30 seconds remaining in the game.

The championship game was a game for the ages. Revolution vs. Capital City. The game literally came down to the last play with Revolution having to throw a touchdown pass the length of the field with 4 seconds left on the clock. They converted on their extra point with no time remaining to get the victory.

It was a great day of competition and fun. As Jonathan Johnson, sports ministry director at Riverland Hills, shared Saturday morning,
Colossians 3:23 - whatever you do do it willingly as to the Lord and not for men.

Thanks to our sponsors:
Ed Burns Heating and Air
Advantage Driving LLC
First Baptist of Lexington
Palmetto Cafe (opening soon, Hwy 6&Two notch rd)

Our sponsors make our ministry happen.

We want to start by saying thank you to all the generous donors to our ministry. Our daily routine begins with our morning stretching to playing for 3 hours in the hot sun!...perfect recipe for fun.

All participants are divided up by age group and have the opportunity to choose between different sport tracts. Our tracts consists of wiffle ball, kick ball, soccer, flag football, basketball, capture the flag, and dodge ball. Our most popular game so far has been capture the flag. I must say that I'd forgotten how much fun capture the flag is to play.

In between our 2nd and 3rd tracts we bring everyone together and give them a lesson based on one of our 5 core values, honor, integrity, character, teamwork, and faith.

I want to thank all of our personal and business sponsors for allowing us to have our program. I've purposely planned races and other events around this one race. I was excited and ready to run. That weekend we were staying with one of Sarah's friends in Charleston which made our morning commute fairly easy. The night before we stuffed ourselves with spaghetti (it's what they tell you to eat but not my favorite) and then went off to bed. My goal was to run a 3:10:59, I wanted to make sure I qualified. We got up that morning and all I could think about in the shower was crossing the finish line and wondering what it would feel like to qualify. It wasn't a gurantee but I knew I was about to endure a little over 3 hours of pain!

We loaded up and off we went. We arrived on Kiawah and loaded the shuttle buses to the waiting area before the race. We were waiting in this large room for about an hour before I started to go outside and warm up. By this point I was about to go crazy, I had to do something. I had bought a banana to energize me for the second half of the race so I went out and strategically placed it in the woods where no one else would see it! On a side note, I HATE bananas, but again it's one of those foods that they tell runners to eat.

Time has come and the gun goes off. I got my iPOD pumping load music in my ears so I can zone and not worry about the other people huffing and puffing around me. I was a little nervous because this was the first marathon that I hadn't carried my water. I was going to rely on the aid stations to supply all my needed hydration the only problem is I've never mastered the art of drinking on the run from a paper cup. Everytime it ends up all over my face and clothes so I have to stop running drink the gatorade then start again.

I came up to the first mile checkpoint and looked down at my watch, 7:02. I was right on pace. I was going to run 7 minute splits as long as I could then hang on for dear life. I started to click off miles and got to the first water station where I was going to take a drink, mile 6. I came up to the table, stopped and got some gatorade, then I had a guy yell at me "GET OUT OF THE WAY" for stopping. When I heard this I yelled back " I paid just as much as you did to run this race go around me!". After yelling at him, getting my pulse rate up, and making it my mission now to make sure I pass him and make sure he knows that i'm in front, I continued on my race.

At mile 10 I came to the water station again stopping and drinking and noticed...THEY HAVE BANANAS! I started laughing. I didn't have to search for my hidden banana anymore. I grabbed a banana and began to slowly eat away at my new favorite fruit. I passed the half-way point at 1:32. I figured I could do the second half 6 minutes slower and still qualify, that eased the nerves a little bit. The only bad part about kiawah is that once you make the turn-a-round at the halfway point there isn't much activity for the 2nd loop. I caught up to a guy running and started a conversation. By this time there were no fans, and no other runners. I was beginning to wonder if I was still on the course. I got to my 15 and felt great. I began to push my pace a little bit and started running around a 6:40 pace. I figured I better scale it back a bit if I wanted to survive the last 10k.

I made it to mile 20 at 2:23 minutes and was feeling it at this point. I was now 10K from qualifying. I had 47 minutes to run the last 6.2 miles. I kept on going and I came to mile 23 and noticed on the ground someone had drawn a finish line and I remember thinking, " I wish I was finished". I made it my goal at that point to "get to the woods". The last mile at kiawah is along a sidewalk in the woods. I knew if I made it there then I could finish. I made it to the woods at 2:58. I now had 12 minutes to go 2 kilometers. I was flooded with emotions and thoughts as I ran past people in the woods. I knew I was going to finish. I saw the mile 26 sign and right after that the light at the end of the tunnel. I came out of the woods and took a sharp left and the finish line was now in sight. I was coming down the final stretch and I could hear my wife cheering for me. I stared at the big sign as it counted 3:08:11, :12,:13. I had finished. I crossed the finish line knowing that I had achieved my goal. I found my wife immediately and gave her a hug, well it was mostly her holding me up but it was good. They gave me my glass finisher medal and I dropped it as it shattered on the ground. At this point I didn't care, I had just qualified for Boston! I went back and asked if I could get another one and the guy wouldn't give me one...I was like dude, you either give me one or I'll take a new one! Luckily a lady heard me ask and came over when he was reluctant and said "Here you go" and gave me a new finisher medal saving the both of us from a brawl!

What a day, what an experience, all to be remembered on April 18th as I take my 26.2 victory lap!

This week has been mentally tough but physically easy. After a 10 mile tempo run on Sunday it's been marathon pace 2 mile runs on monday and tuesday. Today will consist of a light leg workout and maybe a jog.

check back tomorrow and I share the unique story of how I was able to register while biking across America when registration closed in a few hours!

IT'S OFFICIALLY RACE WEEK!! BOSTON MARATHON 6 DAYS AWAY

The Boston Marathon. This week is a celebration of a goal achieved. The Boston marathon is a coveted event mainly because not everyone can get in, only those who qualify and based on registration from this year, that's not a guarantee. Being a un-athletic, slow white guy from south carolina, I'm going to enjoy myself along the 26.2 miles. I'll call it my 26.2 victory lap.

It all started in August of 2006. I had just gotten married and a local gym was having a 5k road race and I remember thinking, I wonder if I could even run the entire way! After the race I was hooked. That began a hobby that I still haven't given up! The next March I ran my first marathon and finishing in 3:31:48, 1:48 off of my goal time. I remember thinking as I crossed the finish line "that wasn't so bad", but then I quit moving for the rest of the day and tried to walk again....PAIN!

I tried the marathon distance again in 2008 with the thunder road marathon in Charlotte, NC...that wasn't so pretty. I knew I was in better shape but didn't know how much better shape. I ran the first 20 miles, then walk/jogged the last 6.2 finishing in a time of 3:26. I was now 16 minutes from my goal of qualifying for the elusive Boston Marathon. I would wonder from time to time if I would ever be able to qualify. Being the recreational runner that I am the Boston is like the Olympics. It's something you must earn and the standards are high enough that you must put in quality, hard workouts in order to achieve the desired time, and even then it's not guaranteed that you will have a successful race. I'm never going to come close to qualifying for the Olympics or am I even going to try but to me the Boston marathon is the olympics.

After the Charlotte marathon I hurt worse than the time before, mainly because there were more hills, especially the one that the race director decided to put at the finish!(thanks). I still wanted to try and make it to Boston. I set out in 2009 to train to qualify at a winter marathon so I picked the flattest marathon I could, Kiawah Island.

2009 ended up being a good race year for me, every race I participated in I ran a personal best and lucking up in a few and actually being the overall winner! The time came to test the fitness and see if I could reach my goal of running a qualifying time of 3:10 or faster at Kiawah Island Marathon.

Check back tomorrow as I take you through my experience of qualifying for Boston at the Kiawah Island Marathon. I will be updating my page each day before the trip and as we leave on Saturday.

Today's Run: 4-5 miles @ Marathon Pace

Flag Football results - Week 4

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; They played hard all day and came away with a runner-up finish.

Our 17u girls competed in the Super Regional "Ice Breaker" tournament down in Augusta. They played well and made it to the semi-finals in bracket play. They've continued to play well this season coming runner-up in the first tournament and making it to the final four in only their second tournament.

Most of our players will be competing with their school aau teams in the next couple of weeks. We are very proud of both of our teams. There was never a question of if they wanted to play, the effort they displayed on the court was truly amazing. Our focus in our AAU basketball program is to help these athletes "be better" both on the court and off. We help them achieve this through implementing our 5 values in everything we do. We encouraged the team sunday morning before their games to apply what 1 Corinthians 9:24 says...run in a way that you might win.

In sports you can't control many things but one thing you can control is your effort level. I believe that applies to every area of our lives. We can control how much effort we give to something. Our players displayed great effort on the court which left all the coaches proud.

Crossover RED with their Runner-up trophy

Wyatt Keisler, with coach Eddie Davis, and Will Hunter (not pictured) making the All-tournament team from our Crossover BLACK Squad

Jesse Franklin and Andrew Calamas making the All-tournament team from our Crossover RED Squad

CONGRATULATIONS TO BOTH TEAMS ON A GOOD START TO OUR AAU SEASON!
