As we all know, IT technology is growing rapidly. And in this business world, there is a huge competition between companies. We all know about big network system manufacturers like Cisco Systems, Extreme networks, Avaya, Alcatel Lucent, 3Com and so on, but when I was going to setup a new enterprise wireless network, I encountered a new name and a new technology. I'm talking about Meru Networks. I was impressed by their innovation and technology. Autorun, a bungee jumping for viruses

Today many types of malwares use autorun function in windows to execute their codes. They usually put an "autorun.inf" file in the root of the discoverable drives.

If you wanna prevent it to create the file, it's an idea to create a folder named "autorun.inf". this way the software can't create the autorun.inf file because already there is a file with the same name in there (yes, folder is a kind of file). This way you may prevent your own drives and flash drives to infect, but what about the other's flash drives? Or what if the software replaces your file with its own huh?!

So look at the more effective methods here.

Method 1: If you wanna disable the autorun function effectively, you can use Nick Brown's idea. Follow the instructions below:

1- first if you set any value for NoDriveTypeAutoRun (probably you changed the "95 0 0 0" to "91 0 0 0" to disable the autorun function), delete the value. because that's not gonna help you really!
2- you can disable the autorun function by downloading and running this file:

The above file is just a .reg file (inside the rar archive) to add a key with a value to the windows registry. Instead of using the file you may modify registry manually. To do this follow this simple steps:

run the regedit.exe form start->run or from the start search box in Windows Vista/7.
go to "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\IniFileMapping\" and then add a key and name it "autorun.inf".
there is a string value named "(Default)". Double click on it or right click on it and then choose modify and change the value Data to the "@SYS:DoesNotExist".

"autorun.inf" file is a standard Windows INI file, so the appropriate API calls are used by Windows, when fetching its settings. These API calls can be redirected using the INI file mapping method. In this case, it says “whenever you have to handle a file called AUTORUN.INF, don’t use the values from the file. You’ll find alternative values at HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\DoesNotExist.”

This method is the best for XP and it works in windows Vista or 7 too.

Method 2: Eigher in Windows vista/7 you can use the group policy to disable the autorun function. To do this you can follow the bellow instructions:

Click Start, type Gpedit.msc in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type the password, or click Allow.
Under Computer Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, expand Windows Components, and then click Autoplay Policies.
In the Details pane, double-click Turn off Autoplay. Click Enabled, and then select All drives in the Turn off Autoplay box to disable Autorun on all drives.
Restart the computer.

Of course, there are other ways to disable autorun function or prevent unwanted autoplay. For example you can use anti-viruses or what so ever, but I think thess methods are more secure and effective.

How clever is that!?

In the bar, Barney, Marshall, and Lily, all convinced Ted to take five shots of "Red Dragon" (a special drink) to turn off his brain. So the day after he wakes up with a girl in his bed! Oops!!!
huh so you wanna know what's the story, but you can't, cause Ted does not remember anything at all. So he asks his friends to fill him in. But every part of the puzzle is in different heads.
so story will complete slowly in a step by step way.

Believe me, it's really wonderful ;))) Yup! It was the 10th episode of the first season of my favorite tvshow "How I Met Your Mother". This episode rocks! It called "The Pineapple Incident". It’s one of the bests.

The show started at 2005 and now Season 5 ends. I can’t wait for season 6. The good point is that CBS confirmed that there is a season 6. But I hope for more seasons! Keep it up Carter Bays and Craig Thomas. You did an awesome job!

Roaming Profiles Vs. Local Profiles

Do you know anything about Roaming Profiles? When you are in a windows domain network, you can use roaming profiles so every user in the network can have its own desktop experience no matter witch workstation he or she is logging on to.

Local Profile's data are stored in the local system hard drive. And typically, it's in the windows drive. In the opposite side, in roaming profile user's data is stored in a centralized place, typically a domain server.

Roaming profile has its own pros and cons of course.

Let's see some pros first.

- Allows users to log into multiple computers with their own personal data. This works great in an environment where people don’t have designated desks, such as an open lab.

- You as an administrator can easily backup user's data, because all the user's data are in a central place. Or you can setup an automatic periodically backup. It will reduce the data loss.

- If a system suddenly crashed, until the system is being fixed, user can temporally use another workstation yet having his/her own user data.

- If a user gets a new pc, usually you have to move his/her data to the new pc. but with using roaming profiles obviously there's no need to do that.

Ok, let's see some cons either.

- user logon time will be increased due to user data size and network traffic.

- loading and synchronizing user data consumes the network bandwidth and reduces network performance.
- Users does not have understanding of how it works may make trouble! for example, there are times that workstation is getting the user data from server or times that workstation is synchronizing the user data with the server, that it means it's sending user data back to the server. If users put unusual data (for example video files with large size) on personal directories like "my documents", it will reduce the network performance dramatically. and even it can lead to user data corruption too! In this case, we need a huge bandwidth due to the number of users. duhhhh!!
- Using roaming profiles force you to share directories on the server, so it increases the risk of malware infection for server. As you know, when a domain server is infected by a virus, things are different rather than just a regular workstation.

So you as a network administrator should know everything about roaming profiles and decide to use or not to use it in your network, or maybe you choose just a group of users to have roaming profiles. I don’t know .it depends. Right?!

CMS Awards

I know it's a long time since my last post. Well I was busy doing stuff! Anyway, I was working on a new project with some of my friends to design and program a new CMS, based on Microsoft ASP.NET . But it's not completed yet, actually it needs more time. A web CMS or Web Content Management System is a system for managing the website content easily using an administration control panel. There are some CMSs in the market you can use, some free some commercial. and even some of them are open source.

Drupal and Joomla were awarded as 1st and 2nd places in the year 2009 in the open source CMS award in the Best Open Source PHP CMS category. these two CMSs have been always in one of three first top positions. There are other CMSs awarded in different categories too. like Microsoft Sharepoint 2007 for document management and collaboration. this year WordPress was awarded as Overall Best Open Source CMS. For those unaware, WordPress is an open source blogging platform that powers hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of websites.
Creating a new CMS depend on detail level and customization level is a hard work. actually it is fun too!! At least you can try one of these free CMSs. you can learn many things just by using them. have fun!

Gmail Vs. National Email

Hi guys

Limiting internet users in Iran to access the information on web is not a good thing, and now blocking Gmail!!! WwowW, what a SHAME! but it really happened! I couldn't believe it at the first place but after a while we still have very limited access to gmail service in Iran. As an Iranian I'm so embarrassed! The government says we are guiding Iranians to use the National Email Service by blocking the Gmail service. but really? they couldn't find any better ways to get Iranians to use the new service?! also this service is new and there should be a period of time to test it like any other systems.

you should offer a better service to get people to use it, or you can use it as a formal Email service, but you can't say people what to choose!!! think again!

Umarex & Walther CP88

There is no denying that Umarex has made its mark in the airgun world. For those who aren't aware, Umarex is the company that owns Walther. They bought a 90 percent interest in 1993, and the world wondered what would happen to the veteran gunmaker. In the year 2006, March 14, in Ulm, Germany, Umarex celebrated the 120th anniversary of Walther. One reason for their newfound strength was a panoply of realistic airguns that started flowing from Germany in 1996 with the introduction of the Walther CP88!

I have an Umarex Walther PPK/s pistol. and now I've got the CP88 as a new. The CP88 with the 4" barrel is a copy of Walther's P88 Compact 9mm pocket pistol. Though the exterior of the pistol is made of a low-temperature casting metal (pot metal) Umarex has engineered a beautiful finish that resembles blued steel. There are no voids visible, and the corners and edges are as sharp as if they had been milled. The weight is within fractions of an ounce of the firearm's weight (it's 1040grs), so you lose nothing in the sensory department!!

A physical biorythm cycle completes one life cycle in 23 days. An emotional biorythm cycle is 28 days, and an intellectual biorythm cycle is 33 days.

so if there would be a day with all the cycles on the lowest amount, that day is not a good one, and in the opposide side if you have a day with all the cycles on the peak, that is your day! these days called critical days.

Antonov

I was browsing the web , and I saw a picture of Antonov An-225 Mriya. and it made me to write this post. :)

I always loved the aviation. I used to make airplane models. some static and some flyable. I still have all of them and I really enjoy them. flying was all of my dreams. I still wanna fly and I'm trying to get a PPL lisence. and who knows maybe CPL after that ;)

Antonov is one of my favorite aircraft designers and producers in the world. its planes are very productive. and either An-225 Mriya is one of my favorite airplanes. it's almost the biggest and heaviest plane in the world. see the comparison diagram in the page linked above. it shows the differences between An-225 and Boeing 747-400, Airbus A380-800 and Hughes H-4 Spruce goose.

At the first An-225 was made to carry the Soviet Union’s space shuttle Buran. but latter in 2001 it flied again for military transporting purposes.

finally the end of waiting. after beta, RC, and RTM, today the final version of Microsoft Windows 7 has released officially. personally Windows Vista made no sense to me, but the Windows 7 seems different. if you wanna try it, here is a link to download via torrent:

XUbuntu & Ext4

The last week I was installing XUbuntu 9.04 on a server in our company network. XUbuntu is an Ubuntu with a lightweight GUI. It has less minimum system requirements and uses less system resources. because it uses Xfce for desktop environment while Ubuntu uses GNOME.

Its suitable for laptops or servers or even desktops. if you want to install a Linux on your server, its a good choice because its lighter and also had some GUI anyway! of course if you are not one of those guys prefer to use the Linux classical command line!

anyway, I saw the Ext4 file system in the partitioning part of installation. its the new Linux file system that is faster and more reliable. Its backward compatible to Ext3 and Ext2. It has other improvements like:

Extents
Persistent pre-allocation
Delayed allocation
Break 32,000 subdirectory limit
Journal checksumming
Online defragmentation
Faster file system checking
Multiblock allocator
Improved timestamps

openSUSE considers the Ext4 as the default file system in a late-2009 release, and Ubuntu considers it as an option for users. Now its time to move slowly to the Forth Extended File System for Linux users.

Final Project

Hi there

I know its a long time since the last post. Well, I was busy with my final project for university. It was a Dynamic Form Generator. this DFG should dynamically create Windows forms when needed. the Administrator users can design their forms within the program and store them to the SQL database, and other users can open this forms and use them. DFG should act as an engine in the main program. I should go further to improve the program to be a real deal!

I used IBM Rational Rose for some UML Diagrams for design part, coded the project using Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2005, and I used C#.NET as my programming language. actually I love this Language. It has a good object oriented structure and its well organized! thank you Microsoft! ;) and also I used Microsoft SQL Server for the database.

I was going to talk about some thing different from my project, but I think its going to be on a separate post. heh!

Deep Love

here you can see the visitor's browsers they use to browse the blog. it's just for a period of a week. so the result maybe is not stable. I think in a wider range we can get a better and more reliable result of course.

Photoshop: Love & Hate

it's been a while that i did not work with Adobe Photoshop, but recently i took a picture of myself playing guitar with my camera using timer function. but when i was looking on that picture, i wonder if i could use some Photoshop effects and or tools to improve it. i think Adobe Photoshop is a magical tool for editing pictures. actually i love the program and either i hate it!!! why? because i used to paint and draw on papers, in fact i loved it. but after accessing to Adobe Photoshop, i almost forgot about the papers! it changed many things. i loved it as a great art. i mean painting. anyway this lovely program is very powerful and flexible.

Centralized Network Management

since I recently became a network administrator I was looking for the best centralized network management solution . and since all devices in our network is made by Cisco, I went to the Cisco website. That helped me! I found a program called Cisco Network Assistant (CNA). I even didn't know what was the devices IPs! but simply by providing the subnet mask CNA searched the entire network and it detected Cisco devices after approximately 26 minutes. after that simply I created a community with all detected devices. simple and beautiful!

It is really nice to manage the whole network just from a single workstation. but it would be better if we had multiple monitors connected to that PC. one for monitoring and the other for navigating and configuring and remote control and other operations.

CNA can configure, monitor and troubleshoot the devices in your network. Also I think I need to use MRTG and SmokePing too. both are free and very useful. and both of them are platform independent and they work with RRD and some Perl components. maybe I'll talk about configuring MRTG and SmokePing latter.

there are many tools out there. and if you know about other handy network tools, please let me know.

Windows 7 RC1

Today Microsoft released the Windows 7 Release Candidate 1 for developers who are members of Microsoft’s MSDN and TechNet programs. apparently others can get it on 5th may. Release candidate is the final version before the official release.

Microsoft windows 7 will take less memory and will be more efficient. It will have less minimum system requirements. It has better look and performance than Windows Vista. It's interesting that even Windows 7 beta version was more stable and reliable than Windows Vista. This time it looks like Microsoft listened better to user's feedback and opinions.

Anyway I can't wait to go for it! and this time I'm gonna install the 64-bit version because of RAM limitations on 32-bit version. Currently I have 4GB of RAM installed in my PC but the Windows XP 32-bit version can address only 3.25GB of that. some amount of it's capacity is just wasting! not interesting! So it's time to change why not Windows 7?!

Persepolis

I told you guys about Shiraz trip, well it's a picture I took from Persepolis ( I mean Takht-e-Jamshid). I took many many pictures but I can't put it all here! but I really like this one!
In Persepolis there was a big & very very beautiful ancient palace named Apadana and some other masons arround it. when eskandar maghdooni occupied there, he set the place on fire. I don't know what he was thinking?! what a poor culture!!!... anyway when I think about Hakhamanesh empire I feel power and pride! I like my country Iran to be like that years.

DSLR vs. P&S

one day before Norouz I bought a DSLR camera. it's a Nikon D90. it's a great Digital SLR camera with live view technology and either it's the first SLR with ability to video recording. it's kind of surprise! cause it can records video in HD format and 720p quality using jpeg Motion technology.

I was so surprised by image quality at high ISOs. I couldn't believe it, the default ISO was set to 800. WwowW :-O!!! you can see the sample Photos in different ISOs on the Internet. It can control the noise level in high ISO images very well.
the only problem in the camera was the low focus speed in Auto mode when you are using the live view instead of view finder, the camera doesn't focus automatically in video recording (Oops!!!), and hey it's a pricey camera ;( I spent lots of money on that, but I'm not disappointed of course ;)

if you are going to buy a digital camera you should know what type of camera is better for you. there are two major types :

1- Point and shoot (p&s) or compact

2- Digital Single Lens Reflex (DSLR)

p&s cameras are usually easier, less weighted, more compact, cheaper and simpler. The main advantage of an SLR camera over the point-and-shoots is that you can change the lenses so you can have exactly the right lens for the subject you're shooting.

There are a bunch of advantages of SLR cameras over the more compact point-and-shoots:

You can expand your system to match your interests. If you suddenly get interested in photographing tiny things, just get a macro lens, and you're in business.
Upgrading is easy. If a fantastic new camera body comes out, you can replace your old one, and all your old lenses will continue to work.
Almost every level of equipment quality is available - you're limited only by your pocketbook. With a point-and-shoot, you get the lens and flash that comes with your camera, and that's it.

When you look through the viewfinder, you actually look through some prisms and mirrors, and you wind up looking through the lens. When you trip the shutter, the mirror flips out of the way, and the scene that is projected on the film is exactly what you saw through the viewfinder. If you put on a different lens, you automatically see a different scene through the viewfinder.

choosing a P&S or DSLR camera is not so easy. you have to think about every aspects and more details to decide... anyway I think having a good camera is necessary for capturing moments of your life!

Oops!

I was busy for a while and couldn't update the blog. sorry for that!

anyway happy new year to all Iranian friends all over the world. best wishes for you guys for the new year!

I was on a trip to Shiraz in the new year, and on the way back I fell asleep when I was driving! and then car got out of the road suddenly, we was almost dead! but just god saved us. no injury, nothing! just my car got damaged. All four of my tires were slashed and they were all out of use absolutely! and some more more damages of coarse! anyway, I'm still alive ;) ... never mind. let it go.

you can see my car while it's being lifted by a truck crane. the photo was taken by my new camera!
so the moral of the story is not driving when you are tired.
hey don't blame on me, because I was looking to find a place to stop the car for a few minutes; but there wasn't any!
In some roads there was a small parking areas every (for example 10) kilometers, and there was a phone booth too. it's very good & useful. but that damn road hadn't such places. anyway be careful while driving!

my personal hobby

Oh yeah, that's my room where I make my music songs and do all the other stuff I'm interested in.

Music is one of my personal hobbies. My songs doesn't publish anywhere but I like to share it with my friends. So I uploaded some of my songs and you can download it from links at the end.

this songs are not new, in fact the last song I composed named "Overburned Phoenix" was in the year 2008 and it wasn't finished yet but when I was working on that, my computer faces some problems and I had to reinstall my Windows and the problem was that I forgot to backup my files on drive c and bang!!! All that beautiful songs were still under work was gone! what a misery ;( In fact I lost all the project files but one mp3 file. It was an unfinished extracted mp3 file for Overburned Phoenix project. I had very better ideas in my mind for this song to reflect the concepts that it was supposed to expose but... .

There was a work of art among that songs that I really liked it and I never extracted it from the project file so I lost it completely. too bad! But I will make something like that again!

I used very good recovery programs but recovered files were not recognizable by the program Sonar.

heh ... funny story, Most of my songs were composed when I was in the middle of my exams!!

if you ever download movies from internet, so you saw pirated movies or prereleased or completed versions of movies avalable here and there. actualy they have some deferents in video and audio quality. here is a summerized information about these pirated movie release types:

CAM

Rarity: Common

Quality: Low

This is a copy of a movie made in the cinema using a camcorder or a similar device. The quality is usually very poor and has added visual affects such as people walking infront of the camera, darkness and tilted angles. There are also negative audio affects such as people coughing, laughing, eating etc.

TS, TELESYNC

Rarity: Common

Quality: Low video, high audio

This is a copy of a movie where the video is made in a cinema using a camcorder or similar device and the audio is then synchronised with a secondary audio recording with the source likely being a direct feed from the cinema's sound system or captured from an FM radio transmission meant for hearing-impaired customers.

Also, many studios release screeners with intermittent black and white scenes to deter resale of the film. The quality is usually slightly lower than a DVDRip due to the smaller investment in DVD mastering for a limited run.

An R5 is actually a form of TC (TeleCine) but produced by the studio to use as the basis for digital releases. The difference between an R5 and a final DVDRiP is that an R5 has not gone through post processing and doesnt include any extra features. The name R5 comes from DVD Region 5 which covers Ukraine, Belarus, Russia, Africa, Central and South Asia, Mongolia and North Korea where R5's are released by studios to try and combat piracy.

today I was downloading some VST plugins for using in Cake Walk Sonar. I have a Korg PA 500 keyboard in my room. It is a great keyboard and I really like it. But when it comes to sequencing your song, it's better to find something more useful. Because when you need to edit your song and move or copy your notes to another place it sucks! the best way to do that is using a sequencer software in your PC. I currently use Cake Walk Sonar, but there is other good sequencers available too.

But I was going to talk about something else. you know it is good to have a hardware MIDI device like a synthesizer but some times you need to use extra devices to do a particular job. If you don't want to spend lots of money for that, Then the best way is to use virtual devices. There are many virtual devices for free or in very cheap price!

The virtual devices and effects are available in different types:

DirectX Effects = DX
DirectX Instruments = DXI
VST Audio Effects = VST (VST = Virtual Studio Technology)
VST Instruments = VSTI
MIDI Effects = MFX
and others!

Maybe there are other virtual effects or instruments out there that I don't know about them. But the point is that, it is very easy to get these great tools, I mean it is a good opportunity that these expensive instruments are available for everybody to try them for free or using them in a very cheap price! right? so what are you waiting for? at least by using them, you can understand the basic concepts of the electronic music.

VST is more common and popular. you can use them as plugins for your VST host. Of course any program has it's own plugin format but VST has a standard interface that most advanced sequencers support it. usually there is a common folder for VST plugins. And all you have to do is to copy the dll file into that folder.

firefox: resolving memory leak issues

Yes, firefox is a great browser. But it has some memory management issues. I mean there is a memory leak (or garbage memory) problem. It means that firefox consumes memory without any use. even sometimes you can see in the Windows Task Manager that the Mem Usage of firefox in the Processes tab is increasing constantly!!!

There is a simple solution that doesn't fix it completely, but makes it better to some extends. This is not a fix for memory leak but it affects it. It will move firefox to your hard drive when you minimize it, and as a result it will take up less than 10mb of memory while minimized. this is one of the options in the firefox that does not included in the standard user interface. so if you want to enable it, follow the instructions bellow:

1- in the address bar type "about:config" and press enter. by doing this you can access to varable configuration console. it's something like windows registry.

2- right click somewhere on the page and select new boolean, and in the poped up window type "config.trim_on_minimize" and then press enter.

3- now select True and then press enter again.

4- now restart firefox and it's done!
