December Snapshot

December has been an amazing month for me. I turned 30 and my mother flew out to celebrate it with me..my relationship with my boyfriend is getting better. Not that it was bad before, but our experiences together have just brought us so much closer. Annnnd, if you follow me on fb, tumblr or Twitter, then you already know we got a puppy on my birthday as well. Well, I have him majority of the time but he loves his papa Ryan!

Last December, I was in a terrible place. Illness in my family, a new life, not many friends and just being homesick beyond what I thought was normal. I'm happy to say that I had an enjoyable holiday season, even through the retail aspect. And I look forward to ringing in my new year with more amazing people tomorrow night!

I know it's been a long minute since my last update, I'm seriously on tumblr so much and I apologize for not including you all in the happenings. I did want to share some random photos from December.

If I don't get a chance to update before the year is over, Happy New Year! I look forward to seeing more of you all in the new year!

Happy Halloween (OOTD)

On Friday night, Ryan and I attended the annual Halloween Costume party at Mingle and Plei. If you are in the LA area, and you are looking for an alternative for nightlife, I'd definitely recommend checking this event out. Especially if you're into poker, rock em sock em robots, twister, hula hoops and such! I reconnected with Poker and learned how to play and WIN in Texas Hold 'Em!

My costume was totally last minute. And now that I look through the pictures, I realize I don't have a full length picture at all. So I do apologize. I'm a terrible blogger. I hate asking people to take pictures of me, unless of course it's another blogger, cause then they understand!

I decided on Wednesday of last week that I was going to be a vampire. I figure all I had to do was buy some fangs and do some decent make up. I spent a couple of hours researching makeup and different looks for vampires and this is what I came up with!

May I just add that I would make a terrible vampire. The entire night, I kept biting my on lip! Those fangs can be sharp!

I also wanted to share with you the beginning of Ryan's costume. I absolutely loved it. He was a werewolf. How appropriate? I felt like we were a chunky slightly more attractive version of Underworld. hehe ;)

Sound Off: Why I will never go to a BBW club

I'm going to touch on something for a moment. Now, this may offend a few of you, but I always believe in speaking my own opinion on my blog. As always, I encourage you to add your comments in a respectful dialogue whether you agree with my point of view or disagree.

A friend of mine whom I lived with when I first moved to Cali, she loved her bbw club. She often invited me to go, but I always told her I didn't have clothing that was "sexy" enough to go. It seemed as if she was missing half of her dress most days that she went out. Now, to each their own, I just like to be sexy in a different kind of way.

We even got into a conversation about having a "bbw" speed dating night at Mingle and Plei. I told her that I think you are limiting yourself if you ONLY go to big girl clubs. You don't need chubby chasers, there are men out there that appreciate beauty in all shapes and sizes. She went on to explain how she never gets hit on when she's in regular clubs. And then she took it further by saying, "Nichole, you're gorgeous, that's why you don't have a problem at any club." That right there, raised a flag for me.

Am I to believe that women that go to these bbw clubs really have a self esteem problem and feel as if they won't fit in, or will be made fun of in a regular night club?

When I was about 16/17, I spent a lot of my online time in fat friendly online chat communities. This is where I felt accepted. Men, from all over, would message me, flirt with me, chat with me. They made me feel pretty. I was comfortable chatting from my home with other lovely bbw's and men who admired us. I often took overly sexual pictures, showing my amazing cleavage, minus my face of course. I had most of the men in the chat room eating out the palm of my hand.

My problem then? I had terribly low self esteem and failed to realize that not only was I a physically attractive large girl but I was a great person overall. It took years of reassurance from myself to find a place where I was comfortable with me. Once my self esteem was in tact, I no longer felt the need to hide from the general public.

Unlike the girls of TLC's Big Sexy and new MTV reality tv starlette, Chelsea Settles, I have never been turned away at a club. The one time I didn't get into a club is because my boyfriend at the time was wearing lace up shoes. It had absolutely nothing to do with the way I looked, how much I weighed or what I was wearing. With that said, I have never had an issue getting a guy to dance with me, buy me a drink or even just converse with me because of my weight. Photographers have even snapped my pic alongside my other fat beautiful friends. I guess that may be the reason I've never felt the need to go to a bbw club.

When I was young, and by young I mean about 8 years ago, I was pretty heavy into the party scene in my hometown. There was a club that I went to faithfully for years. Every Thursday and Sunday belonged to me and my girls. Now that I'm in a relationship, I don't party as much, but that doesn't stop the invites from rolling in. And oftentimes, the vast majority of those invites are from fat acceptance clubs. I find myself looking through the pictures and I see all types of beautiful women of every age and size, so I've always been sort of intrigued by big girl clubs, but I've never racked up the courage to go to one. A few of my friends and I decided to go, because none of us had ever been and we just wanted to see what it was like. Well, that didn't quite happen, but I still planned on going...eventually.

From looking at a few of the pictures on the two closest bbw clubs in my area, it makes me super nervous. I find that many of the girls are dressing in a way that screams "CHEAP AND EASY!" Oh, let's not forget some of the actions and behaviors that are captured on film. BTW, let me be clear when I state that I have a problem with girls of ANY SIZE dressing inappropriately. What I find to be inappropriate may be completely different for you. I personally feel like I can exude sexiness in a turtle neck. Because I've always believed that sexy comes from within. Super short skirts and tons of cleavage to me reeks of a girl trying too hard. I'm sorry, but that is just my opinion.

I saw this video of one of the local big girl clubs and I was instantly turned off.

I was instantly reminded of TLC's Big Sexy when the girls went to a big girl club in NYC.

It made me uncomfortable to even watch. I'm all about having fun when I go out, but I guess we all go out for different reasons. If I choose to go to a night club, I'm going to enjoy dancing with my girls, or maybe even the b-fran if he goes. I don't go to clubs with the intention on being put on display for body parts. Isn't this the same type of foolishness and exploitation that we accuse rappers for doing to women? Doesn't seem so different if you ask me.

SOUND OFF: Thinking back to my conversation with my roommate, did I really believe that these girls at the size acceptance clubs were acting with the most confidence because they were in an environment where everyone found them socially acceptable? Would these same girls, still be the same girls if I went out with them to a nightclub where maybe some men didn't like bigger women?

Honestly, I fell in love with the collection during the fitting for the shoot. Piece after piece, everything I tried on fit me perfectly. It's comfortable, definitely has the ability to wear easily without feeling forced or stiff.

On a personal note, I have to add that the team for this shoot was simple amazing. I really could not have asked for a more fun, professional, dynamic artistry team to be a part of. Tracey, herself, is a super sweet girl who just exudes body positiveness! Shannon Brooke, the photographer, was amazing! She created a rapport with everyone as soon as she entered, which is a HUGE win in my book. It works in everyone's favor when the photographer is easy going AND inspiring. Natasha Marcelina has worked with Ru Paul, I mean come on, the makeup and hair is fierce! And lastly, Mariesther Venegas (also seen in Torrid & Forever 21) was a quiet force. She is just as beautiful in person with no makeup on as she is in pictures. Needless to say, I left this shoot feeling inspired by everyone who helped make it possible.

Thank you to Tracey for never being fearful of using a larger plus model along side a standard size plus model. The crazy beautiful Tess Munster, also a larger plus model, has also graced the DD store. Most people believe that a larger model is a turn off. I've even read that many believe that stores would be less likely to sell an outfit if seen on a larger body. Of course, these are the opinions of some, not facts. What do you think?

If I could have lived in a previous time, based solely on fashion, bet your money that I'd choose the 40's & 50's. Fashion after the war brought on new feminine silhouettes, stilettos and cat eye sunglasses. YES! Give me life! Thanks to shows like Mad Man and now Pan Am, it seems as if everyone is excited to bring back this trend. I've been trying to figure out ways to incorporate what I love about the 40s/50s style era into my wardrobe without looking forced or costume-y.

Hidden Gems; Danari Blu

A few weeks ago, the b-fran came over after a friends birthday party and he came bearing gifts. Every girl loves receiving an unexpected bag of goodies every now and again.

I opened up the bag and carefully unwrapped the tissue paper only to find 3 accessories that looked as if they had been created with me in mind. The b-fran then goes on to tell me about this brand that recently launched called, Danari Blu and that what I had just received was some of the pieces from their jewelry line.

I started trying things on to make sure they fit, mind you I was in the middle of cooking. I loved every single piece and instantly started building outfits in my head.

The next day, I went online to see what else this new jewel had to offer. As it turns out, they also offer clothing and handbags in addition to the rings and earrings. As soon as it becomes available, I hope to share with you all some of the pieces and I can only hope that they are as dope as what they have for our slim sisters currently on the site.

The rings by far have been the biggest conversation starter. I love talking about shopping, it's the thing that I do best! So I'm always excited to share with people new places to shop. As you can see, I've already been spotted wearing these pieces.

BTW, I've already started putting together a wish list (I mean yes, really, my birthday is just 2 months away!) I'm eyeballing this, most certainly this, oh gosh and these cause they are so darling, and this, if I'm not being too greedy.

Go ahead, slap my hand! I've been a bad blogger.

I haven't peeped a word since June and my apologies. Working full time is quite draining. I owe a couple of my readers giveaway prizes that will go out this weekend. PROMISE!

Not a whole lot to update. I've been in Cali for 12 months now and I'm not totally loving it, but it's much better than it was when I first arrived. I've been living in Long Beach since I moved here and I plan on moving to West LA (Culver City area) in December.

Speaking of December, I'll be celebrating my dirty 30 which makes me feel really awkward. Not because I'm turning 30, because I'm embracing that and looking forward to my 30's. But I'm sad because thinking about a major birthday with no close friends other than my bfran, well, it sucks quite frankly.

OH! I did do a photoshoot for Domino Dollhouse. I finally got to meet Tracey in real life, and she is a major kick ass sweet heart! LOVE! I can't wait to share the pictures and product with you all. Think Mad Men meets Rockabilly.

So, Hmm, yeah, not much has been going on since June. But I'll share some pictures with you and hopefully that will bring you back! :D hehe

I love my Ta-Ta's: The Playtex Perfectly Smooth Bra

How often do you find yourself adjusting, pulling and tugging on your bra as you do your regular daily activities? If you are wearing an uncomfortable bra, it shows. We women will find all sorts of ways to secretly adjust our bra hoping that no one figures out what we are doing. I, myself, have an issue with every bra on the right side. It's weird. It never fails that I am always tugging and adjusting that one side of my bra to find that perfect bra zone.

That is until I met the Playtex Perfectly Smooth® Underwire Bra. I have to confess, I'm so used to shopping plus retailers for bras and panties that I stopped giving Playtex a chance after I graduated high school. I wanted fun colors, not your typical black, white and beige over the shoulder boulder holder grandma colors. It seems as if maybe I've been missing out! When I received the package from Playtex, I was pleasantly surprised.

I carefully opened the box as if it were Christmas morning and inside I found the Perfectly Smooth® bra in a bright fuchsia color. Ohh la la. I can't lie, it was a very pretty bra!

Ok, so here is the breakdown of this bra according to Playtex:

"It features seamless cups that blend into skin for an invisible look under clothes along with a silky double-layer back for added smoothing, comfort and support. It is guaranteed to be your T-shirt’s new BFF! Adding to the appeal are No-Slip straps which keep those pesky straps in place"

Since I was assured that this would be the perfect compliment to a t-shirt, I decided to wear it to work the next day. Why waste time? I wanted to see just how comfortable it really was.

Can I tell you that once I put this bra on, I did not touch, nor adjust the entire day!? It was amazing, it was almost as if I wasn't wearing a bra at all. This bra is one of the most comfortable bras that I've worn in a very long time. There was no bunching on my right side like most bras give me. Not only did it feel great, but it also supported the "girls." And not only that, the bra is a sexy bra. Ladies,you know how you feel when you're wearing something underneath your clothes and it feels great and it's pretty? You get that extra twinkle in your eye don't you? Well, that was the kind of day I had when wearing this bra. Yes, it was that amazing for me.

I'm pretty sure that while I'm out and about I'll be seeking out more of these bras from Playtex to add to my every growing collection. You really can't turn down comfort AND pretty. Comfy and cool with Lands' End

On Friday, I got the chance to catch up with Marie Denee of The Curvy Fashionista and plus model Tiffany Bank in Old Town Pasadena. We chowed down on sushi at Kabuki Sushi. Yum! So deelish! You all know I can eat sushi practically anytime! After a late lunch, we strolled down to The Equator and took advantage of drinks for happy hour.

Because I wasn't sure how long I was going to be out, I wanted to be comfortable but still not tee shirt and jeans comfy. And I'm glad I did! I spent the entire day out there only to leave around 8:30 to work Mingle and Plei.

My entire outfit today, with the exception of the shoes are from Lands' End. I know most people when they think of Lands' End, they probably think of their mothers or even grandmothers. BUT, I've found that lately, there are tons of pieces that can work in your wardrobe! They've got tons of great basics and really, that is the foundation for any great wardrobe.

Maybe some of you know and some of you don't, but I'm the lead for Lands' End in Sears. Since I've worked in Lands' End, I've began to become pretty familiar with the product that I sell. I was at work checking out some of the deals in the overstocks section and I came across this amazing swim suit. Luckily for me, my debit card was in my pocket, and I simply could not turn away from this swim suit. My associates egged me on and before I knew it, I was keying in my debit card info and finalizing my purchase.

I received the suit on Saturday but I ordered it too big, but returning it at my store was a breeze. I was able to quickly re-order the correct size and I once again am eagerly awaiting my new swim suit!

Hi All!

I know I've been a tad bit m.i.a. lately and I do apologize. The last few weeks have been hectic in regards to my personal life and I just needed time to assess various situations. Also, I started a job at Sears last week! *YAY* :) I also spent Saturday in Vegas after my first day of work at Sears and then working Plei later that night on Friday. Tired isn't even the word.

Last Minute (OOTD)

Last week, on Thursday, I went out with Cid for a "pick me up." I felt really poopy and I guess you could say that I was having an emotional day. I put this outfit together kind of at the last minute and I wasn't really sure how I felt about it. I'm rocking a hat because my hair was dirty and flat.

On Thursday we feasted on burgers from MVP's, window shopped on 4th street in Long Beach, hit the pier and then window shopped in Belmont Shores. I appreciate Cid for brightening my mood, I suppose that's just exactly what friends are for; getting you out of those ruts! <3

Thanks to Cid for bringing her camera and snapping these pics for me. I said I was going to try to take more outfit pictures and we both are working on it. Like I mentioned, I'm kinda on the fence about this outfit. I'm not sure if I love it (or like it for that matter) but I thought I'd share with you anyway :)

Fun note about that day on the pier. FACT: I'm terrified of birds. REALLY! There were seagulls, pigeons and even crows every where. I was so anxious and I'm sure I looked crazy ducking whenever one flew close by. I think Cid has the picture of the one legged pigeon we say just standing ever so still along the rail...weird.

I'm pretty sure I've said this before, but the way my hair looks determines my mood. Call me vain, but I'm just being honest. When I see a new product for hair, I feel like I've got to try it. A little about my hair...it has a mind of its own! My hair isn't curly, but it is coarse and thick! My hair can often dry out, causing it to suck up any humidity or moisture in the air, causing the ultimate no-no...frizzy hair! *shriek*

Needless to say, I try everything to maintain the frizz and add moisture to my hair. Over the years, I've tried all different types of ceramic hair straighteners. None of which I have been 100% completely happy with. That is, until Misikko contacted me to do a review of their Hana Professional 1in Flat Iron. Throughout our constant communication, I was pleased to find out that Misikko is a family run business.

As I waited for the arrival of my new Hana Flat Iron, I thought to myself that nothing would be as good as the Chi Ultra that I purchased back in November from Ulta, and OH BOY, was I wrong! I recall reading the reviews on the website, and everyone just being so pleased and highly impressed, which was great to read.

I am so thoroughly impressed with this HANA flat iron. I have been using it for the last two weeks, and each time when paired with the HANA Shine Shield, I get better than salon results! I wanted to remix the awesome Forever 21 Sequin Butterfly top that you all seemed to love so much. I wanted a bit more of a relaxed, chic look. So I opted for a pair of grey denim flares and black wedges. I stacked my bangles and left the neck bare. It was raining in Cali today, so of course my trusty black faux leather jacket made another appearance. I think it turned out well! I totally meant to take just plain ol' outfit pictures, but I'm a major fail at being narcissistic...but from the pictures, I think you get the idea!

So, I need to add that this is the first pair of flare jeans that I have worn in years! I usually opt for a skinny or bootcut, but I love the way these balance out my legs. Not to mention, flares have been in all of the magazines. Will you give flares a chance, again?

Today I attended the Coast to Coast Model Search hosted by Chenese Lewis and Plus Model Magazine in Ashley Stewart at Fox Hills Mall in Culver City. From 4-7, in LA and NYC, curvy divas lined up for a chance to win a $300 Ashley Stewart Gift Certificate, a glam photoshoot and an editorial in Plus Model Magazine. In LA, there were women of all shapes, sizes, heights and ages lined up for their chance at this awesome opportunity! Maddy from PMM hosted the event in NYC. I can't wait to see the pictures from that event!

I met beautiful girls from the local area. Everyone was excited! The mood was very relaxed and inviting...I was definitely vibing off of the energy. The staff at Ashley Stewart were so helpful and nice. They even snagged curvy girls walking by and asked them to participate. Everyone seemed to make friends while standing in line. I know I did. I ran into a model who I've seen before, but never had the chance of meeting, Miya. She's a gorgeous, tall chocolate model with a very down to earth attitude.

Last night, I linked up with Iza to watch Ryan's stand up last night at the J. Anthony Brown's J-Spot in LA. Unfortunately, Ryan got bumped for some comedians that were less than funny. I'm not sure how talking about "semen on the face," oral sex and using every profane and sexually explicit phrase in the book is more funny than smart comedy. I was seriously puzzled. I spent $11.50 on two cokes thanks to their 2 drink minimum and I wasted gas. Eh, but at least I got to wear my cute new top from the Torrid clearance sale! Oh huge shout out to Iza and her cousins, oh and Ryan to for putting me on the spot. Thursday is Ladies Night at the J-Spot and they hold a "Stiletto Strut" contest. OK, I know I'm a model and I've ripped runways but I have terrible stage fright when you put me on the spot...needless to say, my legs wobbled the entire time. LOL I didn't win, but it's ok. I put in the effort. hehe

I was zipping through my Ulta advert yesterday evening, when a sample card fell out from between the pages. I literally went, "OOOH, Michael Kors has a new fragrance," to my friend Liz. Immediately I ripped open sample and sniffed. I sniffed and sniffed some more.

The Michael Kors Palm Beach smells like an amazing summer day. It's a bit sweet, but still light enough for everyday wear. It's definitely going to be added to my collection! You can purchase Palm Beach at Ulta or by visiting the official Michael Kors website. I believe both are actually about the same in price, but if you're like me, you like racking up points on the Ulta card. Not to mention those awesome little incentives they will usually mail you after signing up!
