How Safe Is Your Car Harness?

Did you know any company can offer you any dog harness and tell you that it is suitable for the car and it does not need any specific safety testing? Would you buy a baby seat for a car that has not had proper car safety testing?

Beverley Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today was on Radio 5 Live talking about car harnesses, here is a transcript of what she said. Thank you Beverley for getting this message out there.

Talking about the laws surrounding restraining dogs...

"As the rest of Europe seems to be doing it automatically I think it is only a matter of time before we do too. If it's a clear rule I think people should know they should be doing it - We were all resistant to car safety belts for people, but when its the law you do it."

"I think the thing to notice here is at the moment when you are buying seat belts and car seats for babies there are standards you look for to make sure they are properly tested - there are not too many harnesses that are properly crash tested for dogs ....... At the moment anyone can sell you a harness and will not get done, they are not the same standards that you are getting for humans."

In the USA there is a V9DTPet Safety Durability test. The Bergan car harness offered by Xtra Dog conform to V9DT standards. Click here to order yours.

Seat belts, child safety seats, and air bags have all been developed over many years to protect us and our passengers while we travel. But what about our furry travel companions? There are over 10 million dogs in the UK today and many of those travel with us at least once a week. We love to take our dogs along as much as they love to go. Unfortunately, every year pets and their owners are injured or killed in a driving accident due to the absence of proper automotive pet harness systems. Automotive pet harnesses minimise driver distraction and provide basic protection from impact forces during abrupt stops and vehicle collisions.

There are many dog restraints on the market today. Can they hold up to the “test”? Until now, there has not been a standard established for automotive pet harnesses. That’s what V9DT is about. A new standard that has been developed with manufacturers and independent laboratories. It establishes a minimum durability standard for automotive pet harnesses. Look for the “Complies with V9DT” logo on product packaging in retail stores to be sure you have the best product on the market today.

Travel responsibly with your pet. For more details visit www.v9dt.com
