How to automate Twitter posts using TwitterFeed

Do you want your Twitter followers to be notified each time you post a new blog entry? If yes, you can use TwitterFeed to sychronise your blog with Twitter in order to automate your Twitter posts.

Here are the steps to set it up:

Step 1: Login to the Twitter account that you want to link your blog with TwitterFeed.

Step 2: Login to TwitterFeed (use the login options provided) to create a new feed. Once you have successfully logged in, you would see the following screen:

Click the “Create new feed” link.

Step 3: In the Create new Twitter screen, click “Authenticate at Twitter” to display the following screen:

Click the “Allow” button.

Step 4: The screen will indicate that you have successfully linked TwitterFeed with your Twitter account. In the screen below, type in your blog’s FeedBurner Feed URL :

Click “test rss feed” hyperlink on the right side of the screen You will be notified by the message “Feed passed OK” if you have successfully linked TwitterFeed with your Twitter account.

Lastly, remember to activate your TwitterFeed by clicking the “Create” button.

To check whether your TwitterFeed is working, create a post in your blog and see whether your blog title and description shows up in your Twitter post.

Add YouTube videos to blog

Adding a Youtube video to a blog is very easy. You can either choose to add the Youtube video to your content page or sidebar.

Add YouTube videos to side bar:

Step 1: Go to the Youtube site to play the video that you want to embed into your blog.You should see the following when the video is playing:

Copy the video codes displayed in the “Embed” box

Step 2: Go to your WP admin/Apperarance/Widget and Add a Text widget to your sidebar. Paste the video codes onto the Text widget and click Save Changes.

Add YouTube videos to post:

Step 1: As per step 1 above

Step 2: In your post, switch to HTML format and paste the video codes onto your post. Click Publish or Update Post as the case may be.

You can change the video width and height by adjusting the video codes.

How to add a favicon to your blog

A favicon is a small image (16 x 16 pixels) that appears alongside the url address of the browser’s address bar.

Favicons will also appear beside a browser’s “favourite” url listing when a site with favicon is bookmarked as show below:

Creating a favicon

You can create a small image (16 x 16 pixels) using Fireworks, Photoshop or GIMP and then use IrfanView to convert the image to .ico format. In this case, you must save the file as favicon.ico or it will not work.

Add favicon to your blog

Upload your favicon.ico file to your site’s root web directory using your FTP program or your cpanel’s File Manager. For example, if your site name is “abcsite.com, you need to place the favison.ico file inside this folder in your server.

Next, you need to place the following code between the in your header.php file (access via WP Appearance/Editor):

Another way to add a favicon to your blog would be to download the MaxBlogPress plugin. This plugin has several ready made favicon images for you to choose from. If you do not like any of the ready made favicons, you can replace them with your own favicon. This can be done after you have downloaded and unzipped the plugin. You just need to replace one of the ready-made images (in the icon folder) with your own favicon prior to FTP the plugin to your Wordpress plugin folder. Remember to change your favicon file name to match the name of the file that you are replacing.

What is a gravatar?

Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar” where an avatar can be a picture of yourself or a cartoon/logo/image which represents you or your business as shown on the left. By now, you would have noticed pictures or cartoons alongside blog comments. These are the avatars of blog visitors who maker their comments on gravatar enabled blogs

How does it work?
For avatars to appear beside a visitor’s comments, the Wordpress blog must have a Gravatar plugin installed or are gravatar enabled.

If you want to place your own avatar alongside your comments in blogs that are gravatar enabled, you need to sign up for a free account at Gravatar.com.

During the sign up process, you would be required to provide an email address and upload a picture (avatar) to the site. The size of the avatar image would normally be 80px by 80px. The picture will be stored on the Gravatar.com server and associated with your email address.

Thereafter, when you make comments on any gravatar enable blogs by providing your email address which matches the one stored on gravatar.com server, your avatar will appear beside your comments.

If you love to see your picture to appear on blogs around the world wide web, all you need to do is to sign up for a gravatar.com account and make comments on any gravatar enabled blogs.

Exclude Pages From Sidebar Navigation Menu

When you have enabled your sidebar widget to include pages, the page titles of any pages that you have created will be automatically listed as a link on the sidebar.

There are times, however, that you may not want your pages to be listed as such. In this case, it is very simple to exclude such pages by following the procedures:

1. Logon to your Wordpress admin screen

2. Get the IDs of the pages to be excluded. Click here to see how it is done.

3. On your WP Dashboard, click the Appearance/Widgets

4. Locate and show the relevant widget where the page(s) to be excluded is listed. The following screen should appear:

5. In the “Exclude” rectangular box, insert the IDs of the pages to be excluded.

6. Click “Done” and the “Save Changes” button

This process should enable you to exclude pages from the navigation sidebar.

Hide Wordpress Pages from Header Navigation Menu

Knowing how to hide wordpress pages from the header horizontal navigation menu is useful especially when you:

1. have a number of pages and do not want to clutter the navigation menu with your page titles.

2. want to create a special page for the purpose of linking from your posts or other pages.

Below is a way to hide unwanted page links from your navigation menu:

1. Go to your Wordpress Editor (Appearance section) and open the header.php file and look for the following codes:

2. Add the following codes (in green) and page IDs (in blue) that you want to exclude from the navigation menu as follows:
&exclude=1,2,3‘);?>

Header.php codes in different themes may look different as shown in the example below. In this example, add the codes (in green) and page IDs (in blue) in the manner shown below to exclude the page links:

Note: The page IDs 1, 2,3 is for illustration only. Click here to learn how to get the actual post or page IDs.

With this knowledge, you will have a much wider selection of Wordpress themes that you can use as most of them have horizontal page menus.

How to find Wordpress page ID

Whenever a post or page is created, Wordpress will create a unique ID.

In cases where you need to get the ID, open your Wordpress admin/Dashboard and click the relevant Post or Page button to display a listing of your posts or pages.

In your post or page listing, hover your mouse over the post or page title and the status bar (bottom left corner) of your browser will display their respective IDs as shown in the example below:

In case you do not see the status bar at the bottom of your browser, turn it on by going to View and click the “Status Bar” if there no tick mark next to it.

Recommended Screen Capture Utility

Screen capture software are very useful if you want to capture any images from selected parts of a computer screen and insert them into your website or blog.

With such software, you can practically capture any area of your computer screen i.e. the whole desktop, any rectangular area of a screen or any image on your screen.

I have personally tried a number of screen capture software and I would highly recommend the MWSnap for Windows which is a freeware.

Once it is installed, your will find that the screen capture utility is simple and easy to use. To capture any or part of the screen or window, you need to open the utility program first and then the application which contains the screen (or part of it) that you want to capture or vice versa. Then click of the MWSnap icon to display the utility functions as shown below:

Once you have selected the available options with your mouse (e.g. Fixed rectangle, Any rect. area, Window/menu etc.) click the button at the bottom (”Snap any area” as in this example) and the MWSnap screen will disappear and the screen of the application that you want to capture will appear. Drag your mouse to highlight the area that you want to capture. Double click the mouse once the area is selected and you will be brought back to the MWSnap screen where you can proceed to save your captured image. You can choose to save them in bmp, jpeg, png, gif or tiff format.

With the saved image, you can upload the same to your website or blog.

How to set up more than one Wordpress blog in one hosting account

There are times that you may want to set up more than one blog with one hosting account in order not to incur extra cost of signing up for a new hosting account to host your other blogs.

To set up unlimited blogs in Hostgator, use the following steps:

STEP 1: Register your domain name with a domain registrar and set up your Domain Name Server (DNS). Click here to see how it is done.

STEP 2: Add the new domain to your hosting account. To do this, go to your hosting account Cpanel by typing “www.yourolddomainname.com/ cpanel” into your browser’s url address box. In the Cpanel, click the Addons Domains icon as shown below:

STEP 3: Install Wordpress by clicking the Fantastico Deluxe icon as shown below. Follow these steps to install your new Wordpress blog.

Step 4: Set up your Wordpress theme(s) and plugins for your new blog. Upon installation of your new Wordpress blog, your hosting provider will create a new folder in your hosting account (based on the admin user name that you specified during the Wordpress installation process). This folder will house your wp-admin, wp-content folders (containing your theme, plugin and upload sub-folders etc.) of your new Wordpress blog. Therefore, you would need to FTP your favourite theme(s) and plugins to these sub-folders.

Fire up your FTP program (FileZilla) and type in the host name, username and password belonging to your main site name (ie. the first domain that use the hosting account and not the new Wordpress blog domain name) and click the “Quickconnect” button to access your hosting files. Drag your preferred Wordpress theme(s) and plugins to the above mentioned theme and plugin folders respectively.

Step 5: Activate the theme and plugins that you have FTP to your new blog. To do this, type e.g. http://www.newblogname.com/wp-admin into your browser’s url address box and sign in to your wp-admin screen using the username and password that you specified during the installation of your new Wordpress blog (as per step 3 above). While in the wp-admin screen, activate your preferred Wordpress theme and plugins.

You should now be able to start blogging with your new theme.
