This summer I've been all over this great state of Michigan shooting the homes, workspaces and neighborhoods of people doing awesome things. An inspiring young lady curating and doing great things in Grand Rapids, two guys roasting coffee in Lansing, and someone bringing beautiful things and interesting people to Detroit.

I was in SF last week and stopped by the Conversatory of Flowers. It was definitely one of the top conservatories I had ever been to with an amazing collection of plants. I am currently obsessed with Anthuriums and they did not disappoint.

We are looking for a new intern to work with us in our Lansing, Michigan photo studio based out of my home. I am a photographer working in fine art, interiors, and food. I also run a successful webshop where I sell posters, prints, and paper goods. My work has been featured on tv, been used on film sets, and has been written about in various print and online magazines. I have also had the opportunity to collaborate with Urban Outfitters, J.Crew and CB2.

You will learn what it is like to be an artist, how to make a living off of your art, as well as the ins and outs of running a small photo studio, and a small business. You will be working directly with me and/or my assistant.

Internship duties may include any of the following:

- Prepping, fulfilling poster & print orders and other tasks that have to do with the online store.
- Photo assisting on shoots in studio or on location.
- Prepping for exhibitions and art sales.
- You may also be asked to help on projects in other mediums other than photo.
- Running errands.
- General studio clean up and organization.

What we are looking for:

- Must be able to work at minimum 4-5 hours a week. Each week is different so depending on the workload, I may ask you to work more than the minimum requirement.
- Good communication skills, able to listen and take direction. You will be handling prints, so candidate must be careful and attentive.
- Own a laptop and would be able to bring it to the studio.
- Knowledge of Photoshop or Lightroom. Must have one of these programs on their laptop.
- Punctuality.
- I am always looking to collaborate and learn from people I work with, so knowledge of art history, contemporary art and design is a plus.
- Knowledge and experience with social media also a plus.
- Someone with a visual art background preferred.

* One position available. This position is unpaid but school credit may be given. Duration of internship is open-ended but must be able to devote a minimum of 5 months to internship.

Tropical Fruit Play

Last month, my friend Julio was gearing up to open his super cool vintage shop Solid State Vintage in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood. He commissioned me to make some fruit images to sell as a limited run color posters for the store! I went and bought all the tropical fruit I could find in Mid-Michigan and this is what I came up with.

GARDEN • VISIT : Hunter Park Garden House & Allen Street Farmers Market

It has been feeling warmer and more spring-like here in Mid Michigan and all the possibilities of a life lived outside and under the sun fills the air! I feel like today is a good day to show you a little garden and market visit I did all the way back in July.

Hunter Park Garden House is located in Lansing's East Side neighborhood. The area is a food desert but the Garden House provides a number of programs such as a CSA, educational workshops for kids and adults, and a variety of other programs that bring food awareness to the neighborhood.

The Allen Street Farmers Market, held year round on every Wednesday is held nearby and features local farmers, bakers, food vendors, and makers! In fact, this was the very first farmers market I went to after moving into the city and made this new city feel a bit more like home.

Home • Visit : Claire Cottrell

Claire Cottrell first popped onto my radar when I came upon her gorgeous Freunde Von Freunden feature a few years ago. I instantly fell in love with her home, the way she embodied this cool, casual and effortless California lifestyle that I've always fantasized about (especially in the midst of brutal Midwestern winters). Neatly stacked piles of books, large art pieces on the floor leaning against the wall, flowers, plants, a hazy warmth infused throughout.

From there, I went on to discover her site Book Stand, with carefully curated nature focused art books. I wanted everything. Her photography, her films are all gorgeous and I love that her aesthetic permeates everything that she gives us.

Last July, I asked her if I could stop by her Silverlake home in Los Angeles to shoot her space and chat with her. She talked about her background in landscape architecture, art directing and all of her exciting upcoming projects.

Thank you for being such a great host me beautiful morning last summer, Claire!

Unison Home

Last summer, Unison Home sent me to Rhode Island to document the process by which their textiles are printed by hand. Then I got a little peek at how they work in their Chicago showroom and studio, choosing and styling fabrics with beautifully designed homewares. At Home At Home with Laure Joliet + New Guest Artist Series

Two new guest artist posters by Laure Joliet for DHC Shop

Today we are happy to release a new visit and a new guest artist series by the lovely Laure Joliet!

What I admire about Laure's work is her impeccable eye for detail, color and composition without sacrificing gentleness and emotion. She shoots for clients like The New York Times, T Mag, Design*Sponge, LA Times, amongst others. Her commercial work is gorgeous, but her personal images, when she loosens up, when she's allowed to focus on the little things, the flaws, the accidents -- I feel that is when Laure's personality really shines.

While in LA last July, I took the opportunity to pay Laure and her famous cat, Hazel, a visit at her Echo Park house on top of a hill. It was exactly as I would imagine Laure's home to be -- a succulent garden out front (I hate you), neat midcentury pieces mixed with old, rougher sentimental pieces and other quirky objects. Nothing looks too polished nor too cluttered. Just sort of quiet, peaceful, open and easy. But what I loved the most were the little journals Laure's French grandmother made her when she was small. Little notebooks, filled with messages, clippings, drawings and misc items.

Jianguo Weekend Market

The Jianguo weekend market, right next to that runs all along the underside of a highway overpass and includes a jade, flower and artist market. The jade market is by far the most interesting of all the markets taking place. Just aisles and aisles of not only jade, but other gemstones, preserved wood, pearls and tons of jewelry making supplies and displays. There were fruits and animals carved out of single pieces of stone!

The flower market made me feel angry I didn't live in a place with more of a consistently temperate climate. The artist market was tiny and cheesy for the most part, but still fun to wander.

Hot bargaining tip! Tell vendors that you are buying to sell the gems yourself and they will give it to you for a cheaper price.

Super Typhoon Haiyan Relief

Last Friday, super typhoon Haiyan hit the central Philippines. The effect was catastrophic, with an estimated 10,000 death toll, and so many now homeless and without food. With communication in so many areas still down, it's hard to tell what the damage really is.

This week I will donate all profits from poster and print sales toward UNICEF's Typhoon Yolanda Relief fund.

Little Paper Planes Presents: "Material Material" by Doug Johnston & Debbie Carlos

Opening tonight!

Come to the LPP shop to meet Michigan based Debbie Carlos and NYC based Doug Johnston. The artists have been working on a collaborative project since June where they will bring the objects to LPP and talk about this process along with their own practices. We will also be releasing a small publication documenting this project that night!

This will be a fun Monday night to meet this extremely talented artists, see the objects they made and have a drink!

"Given the fact that we work in quite different mediums and live in different states, the process of developing a collaboration was an interesting challenge. Eventually the idea of a game arose, where we would email each other assignments with some basic rules as a way to deal with the distance and to keep the tone playful and open. Based on something Doug had said in an interview, Debbie thought that the work could arise based on raw materials we would send each other. By utilizing digitally based collaborative features such as email, texts and Google, we were able to work together over great distances while also mailing each other physical materials.

Sending one material per month for 3 months over the summer, we set out to make anything we wanted, applying the one rule that we should try to avoid combining the materials with more than two other materials.

Debbie sent Doug: metal tubes and bits; a packet of mixed seeds; pure beeswax.
Doug sent Debbie: a sheet of rubber; concrete mix; a bundle of wood dowels."
