Commentary:

* Cabin Fever stays at #28 on the overall list and stays at #1 on the comics list this week. But nipping right at its heels is the #2 item, new Avatar graphic novel, at #38 on the overall list. Could we soon see a new #1 comic? Tune in next week to find out...

* The second Avatar volume isn't due out until June, but there's still enough anticipation to make it the #21 comic this week (and the only item debuting this week as well). Rounding out the Avatar-fever is the return of last year's The Lost Adventures to the list at #37.

* Dead & Tintin Watch: Just four titles each for The Walking Dead and Tintin this week. There are six Batman titles, so maybe it's time to start a Bat-watch in anticipation of the new movie out this summer?

* Cabin Fever slides down a bit more to #28 on the overall list, and still #1 on the comics list.

* Only two debuts this week, down near the bottom of the list: the latest Avatar graphic novel, and Larry Gonick's latest Cartoon Guide.

* Dead Watch: Just three Walking Dead collections this week.

* Tintin Watch: Seven Tintin collections on the chart this week. Looks like for the time being Tintin is the new Walking Dead. (I"m pretty sure this is the only place where you'll see that statement!)

Commentary:

* The Wimpy Kid's Cabin Fever slides down again to #26 on the overall list; still #1 here on the comics list. The next several slots are taken up by Kindle editions of Wimpy Kid wanna-bes Dork Diary & Big Nate; makes you wonder how many digital editions The Wimpy Kid could sell if it was available on the Kindle...

* The top debut this week is the non-fiction Health Care Reform. Also debuting are a couple of collections of Marvel's recent event comics and a Star Wars collection.

* Last week's big debut, The Annotated Sandman, surprisingly tumbles out of the top ten all the way down to the bottom of the list.

* Dead Watch: Only four Walking Dead collections on the list this week; I imagine we'll have to wait for the return of the television series in February to see another uptick in Walking Dead sales. (Amazon appears to be out-of-stock on the WD Compendium at present, which is no doubt affecting sales.)

* Tintin Watch: Six Tintin collections this week. I think it's safe to say that the movie has had a positive impact on Tintin comic sales.

Stats Week: Grading the DCnU

DCnU: New Series, Cancelled Series

USA Today reports that a new wave of DCnU titles will be debuting in May:

Batman Incorporated, continuing the pre-DCnU Batman story by Grant Morrison & Chris Burnham.

Dial H, once again updating the 60s classic, this time written by novelist China Miévelle

Earth 2, featuring the Justice Society set on a parallel Earth, by James Robinson & Nicola Scott.

World's Finest, featuring The Huntress & Power Girl from Earth 2 but stranded on Earth 1, written by Paul Levitz with alternating arc drawn by George Perez & Kevin Maguire.

G.I. Combat, a war book with two rotating features each issue. Some of the features include "The War That Time Forgot" by J.T. Krul & Ariel Olivetti; "The Unknown Soldier" by Justin Gray, Jimmy Palmiotti & Dan Panosian; and "The Haunted Tank" by John Arcudi & Scott Kolins.

Ravagers, a Teen Titans spin-off by Howard Mackie & Ian Churchill.

And because apparently the publishing slate of the DCnU is now a zero-sum game, six titles from the initial wave are being cancelled:

Sad to see O.M.A.C. cancelled, as that was a fun series. A shame to see the two comics starring African-American men cancelled. Also a shame to see only one female creator among the new wave of titles (though I haven't yet seen an announcement of who the artist on Dial H will be; Brian Bolland is touted as the cover artist, but I can't imagine he's doing interiors...)

Of the new titles, I'm enthusiastic about the first four, and will probably pick up G.I. Combat to see if the back-ups are good enough to make me overlook the J.T. Krul-written lead story. I have no interest in Ravagers.

Methodology: I took my weekly (compiled on Friday) lists of Amazon Top 50 Comics & Graphic Novels, and for each week assigned a comic a numerical score equal to 51 minus its ranking; e.g. the #1 book got 50 points, the #2 book got 49 points, the #3 book got 48 points, etc., all the way down to the #50 book getting 1 point. I poured everything into a spreadsheet, and voila. There were a total of 324 different comics that made the Top 50 for at least one week during 2011. You can download a spreadsheet with all of the data here.

I'll be back later this week with more analysis and maybe some (hopefully interesting) charts.

Stats Week: 2011 - A Year of Reading Comics

It's time for Yet Another Stats Week here at YACB!

To kick things off, here's a chart showing how many comics I acquired each week, and how many I read each day of 2011:

My comics week starts on Thursday, as that's when the weekly DCBS shipment usually arrives. Each individual item counts as a comic, whether it be a 22 page floppy or a 600+ page graphic novel opus. The 'Roll' column represents the total delta from when I started keeping track (Feb 2009).

The good news is that I read more comics in 2011 than in either of the previous two years (charts for 2009, 2010). The bad news is that I bought even more, and the net result was that I ended the year with more unread comics than I had at the beginning of the year. I mostly blame DC's New 52 and the 'buy everything' discount that DCBS offered that I took advantage of for Sept - Dec. I figure that was worth about 80-100 extra comics right there.

Commentary:

* The Wimpy Kid's Cabin Fever slides down again to #16 on the overall list, which of course is still plenty good enough to remain #1 on the comics chart. The Walking Dead vol. 15 is at #73, which is still fairly impressive. For the past three years that I have been tracking Amazon sales, the item that was #1 on the first week of the chart for the year ends up also being the #1 book for the year. Will that hold true for Cabin Fever? Tune in January 2013 to find out!

* Kindle sales remain relatively high; while a couple plummet, most hold their positions with a place or two and a couple of new strip collections show up. Missing are any of the DC Kindle editions that debuted on the chart last week.

* Many debuts this week, mostly calendars and the aforementioned Kindle strip collections. Bucking that trend however is the top ten debut of The Annotated Sandman, vol. 1, as DC find another way to package their 20-year-old property. Also debuting on the list is the third Sailor Moon volume, the only manga property that has shown any real traction on the Amazon chart in a good long while.

* It must be the start of a new college semester, as books like Maus, Persepolis and Fun Home climb back up the charts.

Section Zero Returns as a Webcomic

Section Zero, the turn-of-the-century comic by Tom Grummett & Karl Kesel originally published by Gorilla Comics (via Image), has returned as a Webcomic on Kesel's Mad Genius Comics site. After today's opening salvo of a five page prologue they'll be publishing three pages of previously published comics every Thursday, and when they are caught up with the old stuff (three issues worth) they'll have all new material ready to go.

From the press release:

What can readers expect in Section Zero? “Oh, prehistoric creatures that won’t stay extinct, albino alligators in the New York City sewers, the usual,” Kesel says. “I just wrote a pretty intense scene with a troll, and we’ve got something coming up set in the most chaotic, out-of-control place on earth— a kid’s daycare center! But the thing I’m most excited about is— well, when we started Section Zero I made a big deal that it took place in real time, that the characters aged. And I’m sticking to that. So after we post those first three issues there’ll be a solid black splash page with just the words ’12 Years Later…’ And I know it sounds strange, but that gap has only made our comic stronger and better. It made very clear to me what the story is really about.”

DCnU Capsule Reviews, Week 16

This is it, my final set of capsule reviews for the DCnU titles!

All Star Western #4: Hex just can't seem to get out of Gotham; I hope he does soon and we can go back to the one-off westerns that used to be prevalent in his solo title. Moritat does some nice layouts in the underground sequences. Rating: 3 (of 5).

Aquaman #4: I would've hoped for something a bit more interesting for the final confrontation than Big Fight™. The Lovecraftian monster designs by Reis continue to be interesting. Rating: 3 (of 5).

Batman: The Dark Knight #4: This title is just moving along too slowly. And why exactly is Deathstroke here anyway? Rating: 2 (of 5).

Blackhawks #4: I have to admit I'm a bit interested to see where the plto goes next, but not so interested that I'll bother seeking it out. Rating: 2 (of 5).

The Flash #4: Second only to Batwoman in the interesting art area of the New 52. And I like how they kept the suspense of last issue's cliffhanger going well into the issue by focusing on the backstory of the villains. Rating: 3.5 (of 5).

The Fury of Firestorm, the Nuclear Men #4: Totally flailing to find a direction. This title needs to straighten up right quick. Rating: 2.5 (of 5).

Green Lantern: New Guardians #4: The big two-page cliffhanger is the most interesting thing to happen in this title so far. But it doesn't make up for the preceding seventy-eight pages. Rating: 2.5 (of 5).

I, Vampire #4: Was this mostly a flashback? It's hard to tell. Despite that, the art by Sorrentino continues to be nice to look at, and Fialkov does a good job with guest star John Contantine. Rating: 3 (of 5).

Justice League Dark #4: Kind of a mess as it jumps around. And yeah, we could do without the beheading (this is a 'T' title?) Rating: 2.5 (of 5).

Legion: Secret Origin #3: Still unnecessary, but a good read. And at least Levitz isn't completely just retreading old stories. Rating: 3 (of 5).

The Savage Hawkman #4: What the @#$%! is going on in this book. A complete failure. Of all of the DCnU titles so far, this may be the worst. Rating: 1 (of 5).

Superman #4: Wow, that new Superman outfit just does not work. Bring back the denim! Rating: 3 (of 5).

Teen Titans #4: Booth's art is very detailed, even if his figures are a bit funny and his angles are weird (~~and he can't seem to follow script directions...~~ Actually it appears to be a sneaky cameo of one of my all-time favorite characters!) I like the repartee between Red Robin and Kid Flash. Rating: 3 (of 5).

Voodoo #4: Tries to explain a few things. But that scene with the computer jockey? Lazy and stupid. Rating: 2 (of 5).

Ratings compared to the third issues: 3 improved; 8 stayed the same; 3 were worse.

And that's it! I'll have a New 52 wrap-up sometime in the next week or so.

Commentary:

* The Wimpy Kid's Cabin Fever slides down to #9 on the overall list. But that's still good enough to ward off the onslaught of post-holiday Kindle book buying and remain at the top of the comics chart.

* The Comics list is overwhelmed by Kindle books this week, as people unwrapped their Kindles on Christmas morning and immediately started buying their favorite graphic novels to read on its undersized screen. This week also shows the first appearance of DC's controversial Kindle Fire exclusives on the top 50.

* Dead Watch: Despite being available only in print form, The Walking Dead manage to still place nine collections in the top fifty this week.

* Tintin Watch: Six Tintin collections remain on the list post-holiday and post-movie release, which is pretty good, especially in the face of the Kindle wave.

* That's the final Amazon Top 50 chart for 2011. Look for a year-end wrap up sometime in the next week or so.
