P.S. Choosing Yes did a copy.

Update: A second though revealed they were trying to ask not whether I need copy or move, but whether I need to perform the operation (being it copy or move). Bad wording anyway.

Windows-specific.
A site in the .com domain can save a page to a file name equal to the domain name. If that file happen to be valid .com executable that might be executed by a user easily...

I'd like to organize a little poll as to proposed changes to YouTrack/Charisma query syntax symbols.

If you find
type: "Usability Problem" and :"Usability Problem" queries a bit more intuitive or easy to type then current
type: {Usability Problem} and #{Usability Problem} then please go vote:
Change query syntax: replace { and } with quotes
Change query syntax: replace # with :

Or, maybe you have better suggestions?

Fake "test" entry is so common, it can have unforeseen consequences in the Digital Age. How many accounts are there with test/test login/password? Millions?

Update: It was a long time since the post, so it does not work anymore... openkapow went commercial and parsing things need constant support which I am reluctant to do. Anyway, there should be a better way to do this now. Let me know if you find one ;)

It's been quite some time since I've read about various RSS mashups engines. Until today I considered them quite useless, however.

But not now. I've changed my mind a moment after I managed to create this thing. Here is an example of comments for my Russian rare blog.

It serves all comments of a specified user of LiveJournal blog in a single RSS feed. I wanted such a feed for some time already and today is the day.

Pleas note the it works for some, but not for all users. It fails on collapsed threads, etc, etc.

Some background: the feature uses openkapow to turn single entry comments into the feed and then Yahoo! Pipes to aggegate them into single feed. I tried to use Dapper instead of openkapow, but it turns to be quite buggy and not really as robust.
Well, Google's Mashup Editor is yet to try!

Is there a tool for searching the selected word in Google? Select, press - new browser window with the search results is opened. Works anywhere where clipboard Copy works. Is it? I think I'd use it. Just a tiny desktop utility to be ran at startup and help from that point on.

There are press-type-search type (e.g. Google Desktop with it's double Ctrl), but are there select-press-search?

GMail mobile client

Google has announced GMail for mobiles, but, strangely enough, the URL http://www.google.com/mobile/gmail/ does not seem to be accessible from this part of the world (Ukraine). It just redirects to Google Mobile home with no traces of GMail for mobile.
Luckily, anonymous proxies still exist and it's not hard to get to the page. Just strange I didn't notice any note on the limitation anywhere.

Though, from a several minute use, GMail midlet looks rather impressive. With incremental updates, support for keyboard shortcuts, "live" address completion, etc. Worth trying!

Mraker - don't lose track

Add the bookmarklet by dragging the link: Mraker onto your Bookmarks Toolbar and try to figure out what it is, or just read the text beforehand:

One of little frustrations of the web browsing is losing track of the reading spot. I frequently find myself trying to find the last words I read on a long page after I have been disturbed or scrolled up to look up something. What I think of in such moments is some kind of micro bookmarking: bookmarks for the exact place on a web page.

Several sleepless nights and I have crafted a prototype in attempt to do such micro bookmarking: Mraker. It is a bookmarklet that will display a marker over the page in the top right corner. Drag and drop from the marker to create a marker at any page's place. Click the corner marker to scroll to the earlier created marker. Markers should even be remembered between sessions (don't forget to invoke the bookmarklet to show them).

This is only a quick prototype and I really have no substantial experience with JavaScript, so expect bugs. However it works for me under both FF and IE.

You can try Mraker by adding a bookmark ( see the first link in this post) and then invoking the bookmark while viewing a page. Or just paste the link's location into the location field of your browser to get sense what it looks like.

Let's try to use it and see if it is a help of any kind.

Some time ago I felt technology-related thoughts originated in my head can be worth sharing. Thy well can be not original, trivial or mistaken, but this can often be discovered only by sharing or during sharing or only after sharing. If ever one or two thoughts do prove original I'd be satisfied with the undertaking.
