The 2015 Every Member Canvass has now ended. As of Thursday, 4 December, eighty-three pledges totaling $207,866 have been received. The goal for 2015 is $321,000 in pledge income, and we thank those who have already returned their pledge cards. We encourage all remaining households/pledging units to return their pledge cards as soon as possible.

Christmas Pageant

This year the Christmas Pageant will be during the 4:00 p.m. family service on Christmas Eve. All children, children at heart, members, and visitors, are invited to participate. There will be no rehearsals and roles will be chosen during the service. Sound mysterious? Join us on Christmas Eve and all will be revealed.

Foyer Dinner Groups are Returning

Foyer groups are gatherings of congregants who meet once a month for a meal. The groups will be put together on Saturday, January 10, at a kick off supper in Frazier Hall. All names of people who wish to be involved will be placed in a bowl and randomly drawn to form the groups (couples will be kept together). We reconvenes for C.S. Lewis's Book, Perelandra. Lewis imagines a cosmos in which earth is the only planet who has fallen and in the second book, a newly made planet, which may or may not fall. We meet the first and third Sunday of each month. We meet at 1 p.m. in the Rector's Office, feel free to bring lunch.

Eucharist on the Feast of Saint John, and wine blessing

There is a tradition that after worship on the feast of St. John, Apostle and Evangelist, priests bless wine brought by the people. This is done in memory and in honor of St. John, who drank without any ill effects the poisoned wine offered to him by his enemies. After Holy Eucharist at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 27 we will have a wine blessing in Frazier Hall. Bring wine to have blessed and shared and/or wine to be blessed for your home. In addition to sharing and blessing wine, we will have a potluck of appetizers. Come and join the festivities.

If you wish to take part in an informal wine competition, bring two bottles of your chosen wine on Saturday.

SPALDING PARKING: Spalding University has graciously offered their parking lot to the south of our courtyard for Sunday parking. If you would like to park there and are able, that leaves Calvary’s north lot free for visitors and for those who cannot walk far.

NURSERY CARE: Children are always welcome to be with their families in church. If you choose to use the nursery, it is available for children birth-5 years old, beginning at 8:45 a.m. and continuing until 15 minutes after the 11:00 am service ends. The nursery is located on the second floor.

ANNUAL PARISH MEETING: The annual parish meeting will take place next Sunday at 10:00 a.m. in the Nave.

SACRED ARTS: On Sunday, January 25th, at 5:00 p.m., Andrew Swords (Shaker Heights, OH) will present a violin recital which will be followed by choral evensong sung by the Calvary Choir.

ORGAN RECITAL: Eugene Lavery will be presenting an organ recital at Saint Thomas Episcopal Church (9616 Westport Road) on Sunday January 18th at 5:00 p.m. This recital is free and will feature music by Johann Sebastian Bach, Dietrich Buxtehude, Orlando Gibbons, Felix Mendelssohn, and Louis Vierne.

ARMED SERVICES: If you have a member of your family who is serving in the armed forces, please let us know so that we may add them to the weekly prayers.

RECTORS BOOK CLUB will resume in February with C.S. Lewis’ That Hideous Strength.

2015 Vestry Candidates

There will be an election of new members to the Calvary Vestry at the Annual Parish Meeting on Sunday at 10:00 AM on January 18, 2015, in the Nave.

In order to inform the congregation, each of the candidates on the slate put forward by the Nominating Committee was asked to provide the following information: name and occupation; number of years active at Calvary; involvement in Calvary activities; skills and interests; and priorities or goals as a prospective Vestry member. The candidates’ information is summarized below.

Penny Brisson is the Director of Market Research and Planning for the Kentucky Lottery Corporation. She has been attending Calvary since 2001 and became a member in 2004. She sings in the choir and her daughter is enrolled in the Christian Formation Godly Play Program. Her interests and skills are shaped by her active membership in the Episcopal Church since youth, her love of the Anglican Communion and her understanding of the relevance for Calvary’s future of marketing, strategic planning and commitment to diversity. As a Vestry member, she would continue to advocate for the distinctive contribution that Calvary makes to the dynamism of the downtown core community by supporting excellence in Anglican Liturgy and in the ministries of music and outreach.

Barton (Bart) Brown is a Consultant with Humana. He has been a member of Calvary since his confirmation in 2013. Since joining the Calvary Community he has been active in the Education for Ministry (EFM) group, the Calvary Blog and the Calvary Connection, and has assisted the Finance Committee with the annual audit. His interests and skills include facilitating meetings, participation in committees and encouraging discussion via the use of questions. As a Vestry Member, he would welcome the opportunity to serve on one of the standing committees as needed.

Timothy (Tim) Duncan works for the Hospitality Program at Liberty for Homeless Men and Women and has previously worked with the refugee and immigrant population of Louisville. He has been attending Calvary for more than 2 years and was confirmed in June of this year. At Calvary, he has served as a member of a Discernment Committee, and currently serves on the Gardening Committee and as an Acolyte and a Subdeacon. He is also a first year member of the EfM group at Calvary. His skills and interests focus on reaching out to people with diverse backgrounds and faith traditions, and working with potential partner social service organizations located in the neighborhood around Calvary, e.g. Youth Build, Family Scholar House, Franciscan Kitchen, Salvation Army. As a Vestry member, he would actively support the continuation of Calvary's outreach ministry to extend God's mercy to those in need.

Dean French is a teacher and teaches world history at North Bullitt High School. He has been a continuous member of the Calvary Community for 39 years. In that period he has been a member of the Calvary Choir, a member of the Flower Delivery Committee and of a Prayer Team. The interests and skills that he brings to the Vestry reflect his profession as a teacher: communication and languages, a sense of history and the ability to speak publically. As a Vestry Member he would gladly serve where he’s needed: participating on a standing or ad hoc committee, taking on a special project and actively entering into Vestry discussions.

Margaret (Meg) Scharre is a Consumer Researcher with Humana. She has been

an active member of Calvary for 25 years. In that time she has served on the Vestry, on two Search Committees, as co-chair of the Altar Guild, as an Usher, a Eucharistic Minister and as a chair of the Hospitality Committee. She has also co-chaired the Every Member Canvass Committee and has been a member of the Strategic Planning Committee. In terms of skills and interests, she is familiar with marketing, and strategic planning. As a Vestry Member, she would be interested in supporting efforts to increase membership via opening doors to the wider community in the Old Louisville and downtown Calvary neighborhood, building preservation and restoration of the stained glass windows.

Sunday Bible Study Begins

This study is the first in the new Bible Study class. In addition to studying Paul's letter itself, we will begin to learn the tools and techniques necessary to understand and interpret scripture. Paul, imprisoned in Ephesus, writes to a church he dearly loves and in which he takes great joy. Philippians shines as an example of Christian faith lived even through hardship.

His compositional output was small but well-respected and is characterised by uncomplicated harmonies, being mildly modal and lyric, and easy to follow.

A WALK IN CENTRAL PARK: The Central Louisville Community Ministries are sponsoring A Walk in Central Park on Saturday, September 19, 2015 beginning at 9:00 a.m. The purpose of the walk is to support the services provided by CLCM including Calvary’s Food Closet. To register, please see Jim Barnes or a member of the clergy. Registration is $10 and a can of food, or you can just donate $10 and a can of food without participating in the walk. This is an event to support Calvary’s Food Closet and this parish should be the major participant! Calvary will also man a booth with brochures about our church in an effort to let the neighborhood know we are just a prayer away.

DIOCESAN CONVENTION: On November 13 and 14, Calvary will host the Diocesan Convention. There will be representatives here from all the churches in our Diocese, clergy and of course, our Bishop for a gathering service Friday evening, reception and meetings on Saturday. We need your help in many areas including hospitality, technology assistance, concierge duties, beautification, communication and more. Although Sir Lennox Berkeley (1903-1989) began composing as a child, he did not initially plan a career in music. He studied at Gresham’s School, Holt (which his colleague and sometime collaborator Benjamin Britten was to attend a decade later), then read French and Philology at Merton College, Oxford. After encouragement from French impressionist composer Maurice Ravel, he moved to Paris in 1926 to study with Nadia Boulanger. His Missa Brevis was composed for Westminster Cathedral Choir in 1960; and is marked by elegance, charm, wit and masterly craftsmanship. In an article Truth in Music (1966), Berkeley offered his views about composing works for the church: “Being a Roman Catholic, I have naturally been drawn to the Latin liturgy and felt at home with it; it’s part of my life, and I have wanted to bring to it what I have to offer, however unworthy”.

The offertory anthem is Christe, adoramus te by Venetian composer Claudio Monteverdi (1567-1643). The text is proper to the feasts of the Holy Cross, especially important occasions in the Venetian calendar after 1617: in that year a relic of what was held to be the Holy Cross was found by workmen excavating in San Marco di Venezia where Monteverdi served as maestro di capella.

Sacred Arts Series: The first concert and Evensong in the 2015-16 Sacred Arts series will be on Sunday, September 27, at 5:00 p.m. Eugene Lavery will play an all-Bach organ recital which will be followed by Choral Evensong featuring Stephen Paulus’ Pilgrims’ Hymn and Bryan Kelly’s Kentucky Canticles. Paying homage to legendary singer Paul Robeson, the Kentucky Canticles are a unique fusion of Anglican choral music with the music and rhythms of the south.

Blessing of Animals

On Sunday, October 4th, in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, the Blessing of Animals will take place at the 9:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services. All pets are invited to attend, but cats are to be in carriers.
