How To Buy a Combo Washer With A Condenser Dryer

Combination washers and condenser dryers have been a standard on boats for years. It is a very good idea. Throw in a load of clothes, and they are washed and dried. You don't even have to transfer the clothes from washer to dryer. The dryer has a condenser, which converts steam to water.

Additionally, with a condenser no additional venting is required. These units have become really popular for that reason. You can theoretically situate a washer-dryer combination anywhere with water, a 110 volt plug and a drain. Washers can now be loacated in a second floor bathroom or even a kitchen, because some of these units fit 24 inch cabinets.

So it's a good idea...on paper.

There are several problems with the execution. First, although 110 volt is good for placement, the cycle times become very long with half the power. Service is an issue with a very high failure rate combined with the lack of technical help from niche manufacturers. We actually try to not sell this product. If you must purchase a combo under extreme duress, LG would be the only manufacturer to remotely (very remotely) consider.

There is a much better way. Install a 220V line and buy a washer with a separate dryer. The performance and reliability improves considerably. Miele and Bosch are also an upgrade, as this type of compact laundry is the standard in Europe.

They are more expensive than the combo, but they actually wash and dry like real laundry.

GE Profile vs GE Monogram Advantium Speed Ovens

First, in order to be completely transparent, we stopped selling Monogram in November 2011.

Let's talk about the product. Advantium is the only speed oven powered by 240 volt light bulbs. It can cook 8 times faster than a regular oven as a result. The Advantium also has four different cooking technologies: Speed cook, true European convection, sensor microwave and warming as well as 75 preprogrammed recipes, so it is simple to use.

There are three models, a 220 volt wall oven, a 120 volt wall oven and an over-the-range vent combination. A whole chicken can be cooked in 33 minutes in the 220v, 45 minutes minutes in the 120 volt and almost 2 hours in a regular oven. Seafood cutlets are 4.5 minutes in a 220v Advantium and 30 in a regular oven. There is also less preheating, because you are basically turning on a very hot incandescent bulb.

We have been pleased with the performance of the product in live demonstrations. It is a very good niche second oven. Let's compare the GE Profile and GE Monogram version.

Units have the same capacity, same features and electrical specifications. Difference is aesthetics and $480. We have written posts like this before, most notably Whirlpool vs Maytag laundry. There is a mentality in manufacturing. Place a different label on the same product, sell it in a different channel and consumers will buy it like Buick, Chevrolet and Pontiac or in this case Monogram vs Profile.

If you like the handle, then buy the product. Just don't buy a label thinking it is any different than the less expensive version.

How To Buy Downdraft Ranges And Cooktops

A downdraft appliance redirects steam and grease from the cooking surface down through the product itself or via a separate blower to the outside.

First, let's discuss ventilation or how to remove bad odors and heat out of your house (so your house doesn't smell like bad odors). Ventilation is a simple concept. In order for the bad stuff to be removed, you need the following:

Good CFM: CFM is an acronym for cubic foot per minute or how many cubes of air can be removed in a minute. So a 900 CFM blower removes 900 cubes of air. Blower speed is essential in pushing or pulling odors out of your home especially with professional ranges or even high output gas ranges in general.
Capture area: Capture refers to the amount of area in a hood where smoke can be pooled. Even with a high CFM blower, smoke from wok, grilling and other "heavier" cooking smoke is channeled until the blower can force it out of your home. Larger hoods, for that reason, are the best choice for pro-type cooking.
Duct run: The optimimum duct run should be straight up mimicking how smoke travels. Horizontal or straight back is a viable option. Bending or elbowing venting greatly reduces efficiency so avoid as much as possible. Also, shorter runs are more efficient.
Duct Size: Do not use 4 inch dryer duct as smoke will never be exhausted efficiently. 6 inch round duct should be minimum with 8 or 10 inch ducting the standard with professional cooking.

Downdrafting should be considered a last option only. Look at island hoods manufactured by Zephyr or Faber because downdrafts have zero capture area and the duct runs are usually bent a couple of times and are too long to be effective. Have a look:

Still a downdraft is sleeker and many times is the only option for ventilation, so let me show you best practices.

How to downdraft a range:

This is easy. Jenn-Air is the only manufacturer of downdraft ranges as GE, Roper, Amana and Modern Maid have long exited this niche. It is integral in the middle of the unit and available in electric and dual fuel. The blower is roughly the same as an over-the-range microwave at 310 CFM, so keep the cooking on the light side (or open a window).

How to downdraft a cooktop:

Jenn-Air has a downdraft as well, which is identical to the range in blower speed, but the better option is a separate downdraft unit with a cooktop. You can choose any cooktop, as well as have a more powerful blower up to 1500 CFM. Zephyr, Faber, Viking, Wolf, Broan and Thermador all market this type of downdraft.

One word of caution, don't try this at home...

A few manufacturers still recommend this type of installation of a pro cooktop with a downdraft, but it is not an appropriate solution. If you are facing this quandary, consider induction, which is more powerful than a professional cooktop but emits much less heat.Downdrafts were first manufactured 30 years ago, and the blower speeds have been improved in the last few years. However, they are not equipped to handle the heat output of a professional range. Remember, there is almost no capture area in a downdraft, so the smoke will almost bypass the downdraft completely.

VestFrost and Small 24 Inch Counter Depth Refrigerators

According to analytics, 300 people were inquiring about VestFrost refrigerators in the last two weeks. So my first question was: What is a VestFrost refrigerator? VestFrost is an interesting product built with all recyclable material. They are the largest refrigerator manufacturer in Scandanavia. Their story or claim to fame is energy efficiency, green manufacturing and counter depth products. It is also not self-defrosting, so the VestFrost does not consume electricity heating the outside of the refrigerator in a defrost cycle.

Unlike most counter depth refrigerators, the VestFrost is only 24 inches wide, which is a standard in smaller European kitchens or tight American urban spaces. It is actually a decent, bottom freezer designed beautifully (can I say that?) by Bang & Olufson. The downside is small cubic footage at 10.5 and a taller height at 79.2 inches tall.

I do know VestFrost by its American name, Summit. More specifically, the model is CP171SS.

24 inches wide is a European specification, so there are other competing manufacturers being Liebherr and Blomberg.

The Blomberg has the same specs as the VestFrost, sorry Summit. Liebherr is larger at 13 cubic foot with an icemaker and is self-defrosting.

24 inch counter depth refrigerators will always be a niche product in America rather than the standard as it is in Europe. However, for the Bostonians and other urban dwellers with smaller spaces, these refrigerators at least provide a good option.

Capital Culinarian vs Jenn-Air 48 Inch Professional Ranges

Capital Culinarian versus Jenn-Air is an interesting comparison between two lower-priced yet compelling products. I honestly believe that you do not have to spend $10,000 to buy a worthwhile 48 inch professional range.

Capital is a relatively new company founded by the previous owners of DCS. It's styling is identical. Jenn-Air was acquired by Maytag and is now a Whirlpool company. Whirlpool recently invested 300 million into the brand with the emphasis being cooking.

In some ways, both Capital and Jenn-Air have better features than other professional ranges with much higher prices:

Burners:

Capital is the hottest stove in the industry at 23,000 per burner. It is an open, unsealed burner. I like the unsealed because all the pieces are detachable and easy to clean at the sink. If you spill over, however, it can be tough to clean.

Jenn-Air would be the second most powerful with two 20,000 BTU burners and three 15,000 BTU burners. The burners are sealed.

Simmer:

Capital and DCS are the only companies which publish their simmer in degrees versus BTUs. Capital has a 145 degree simmer versus Jenn-Air which has a consistent simmer at 500 BTU. Chef Kurt Von Kahle says the Capital melts butter nicely, but customers have reported mild burning.

Configurations:

Jenn-Air manufactures only with an 18 inch griddle and 6 burners whereas Capital has grill and griddle combinations in 18 and 24 inch with 4 or 6 burners.

Griddle:

Capital is gas, and Jenn-Air is electric, so the Capital will heat faster. However, Jenn-Air infuses their griddle with chromium, so it is the easiest to clean in the industry.

Oven:

Jenn-Air is available in dual fuel with electric convection for the best baking as well as a straight gas. Capital manufactures gas only in self and manual clean. However, Capital does have a rotisserie for basting meats.

Controls:

Jenn-Air has the 7 inch LCD control screen, whereas Capital is similar to the basic Viking and offers no controls.

Capital vs Jenn-Air is a good comparison, especially since both brands are viable, yet overlooked brands in highly hyped market segment.

33 Inch Counter Depth Refrigerators

Buying 33 inch refrigerators is tough due to a dearth of available products. To review, a counter depth refrigerator does not protrude from the cabinet except for the doors and handles. A professional counter depth like Sub-Zero or Viking is similar, but has the compressor on the top. An integrated counter depth refrigerator does not protrude from the cabinets including the doors.

Appliances are manufactured to fit within cabinets. For example, dishwashers are 24 inches wide to fit a 24 inch cabinet. Stoves are most commonly 30 inch to fit a (you guessed it) 30 inch cabinets. Appliances are pretty standard in that regard. You do not see a 22 inch dishwasher or 32 inch stove.

For refrigerators, the most standard and popular cabinets are 30 and 36 inch, followed by 33 inch. Every manufacturer markets several 36 inch products in counter depth. It is by far the most popular size. In 30 inch only the professional companies produce a counter depth.

For 33 inch, only three companies currently offer a 33 inch counter depth refrigerator.

33 Inch Counter Depth Refrigerators:

Samsung RF197ACRS $1299: Samsung is the largest at 18 cubic foot. Remember, counter depth has less cubic foot due to less depth. It is also the only french door and is the most aggressively priced at $1299.
Fisher Paykel RF175WDRUX1 $2109 / E522BRXU $1849: Fisher Paykel is a New Zealand company known for baby incubators and a double drawer dishwasher (same concept, I guess). Currently, they have the only water through the door models and have a gaggle of these types of refrigerators at the same price just with different door aesthetics.
Electrolux EI32AR65JS $1999: Then, there is this inexplicable product. The Electrolux is an all refrigerator or all freezer unit. Electrolux hopes you buy one of each. Since a 33 inch counter depth is typically purchased for a small kitchen, thats not a popular option. You can also buy a cheaper version in Frigidaire.

The Problems With LED Lighting

Like any new technology, there are issues with LED lights in general. Let's look again at the new LED undercabinet lighting display at Yale.

First, let's talk about the incredible potential of LED lighting:

Lamp Life: A LED light will last on average 40,000 hours compared to 750 hours of a comparable incandescent lightbulb.
Efficiency: A LED bulb is 5 to 6 times more efficient than incandescent (at least), so a 10 watt LED should be equivalent to at least a 60W light bulb.
Heat: An incandescent bulb with heat to 300°, whereas LED does not emit heat. Rows of bulbs, especially in commercial applications, will add tremendous amounts of heat into the room.

Now the issues with LED lighting:

Dimming: LED does not work with standard dimmers. Dimmers are normally rated at 50 or greater watts and require at least half the stated load (say 25 watts in this case) to "read" or dim the actual lightbulb. Often times, LED will be far less than the required wattage. In order to solve this problem the bulb must have a dimmable LED "driver" or chip. You must also use electronic and not magnetic dimmers.
Color, Kelvin or quality of Light: Quality of light is determined by the Kelvin scale. 2500° is incandescent and yellowish in color. 5000° is actually the color of the sun, it is very hot white light, similar to early fluorescent lighting. Typically, people want between 2700° and 3200° Kelvin, which is whiter than incandescent yet far yellower than a fluorescent light bulb. A low-voltage bulb has been the designer bulb of choice for that reason. It accentuates colors and textures. For example, before we converted to LED lighting, our showroom was virtually all low-voltage.

Color quality is the main issue of LED in general. If we scroll up to the picture, three of those light sources are LED with published Kelvin ratings of 2700° and three different color renderings. It's like the mattress police. There are standards and labels with no agency overseeing the standards themselves.

How to Buy The Right LED:

CREE Chip: LED actually renders a bluish light and requires a semiconductor or chip to filter the blue light into more natural white lighting. The only semiconductor manufacturer producing white LEDs is CREE. Every other company seems to be inconsistent.
Look at the actual light: As you can tell from the picture above, it is very difficult to buy based on Kelvin rating. Some desirable and more consistent manufacturers are FutureLight and CSL Lighting.

How Much Do Kitchen Appliances Really Cost?

How much kitchen appliances cost was a much easier question to answer when I started back in 1986. There was Sub-Zero, Thermador and Gaggenau and pretty much every other company was a commodity. The basic appliances like top mount refrigerators, top load laundry, microwaves and self-cleaning stoves have stayed the same from a price standpoint due to outsourcing and increased competition.

The luxury companies of the 1980s are much more expensive today. These companies do not have the manufacturing scale of the commodity brands and therefore the pricing power with steel and other vendors.

Then there is the relatively new affordable luxury segment like Bosch, Jenn-Air, GE Cafe and Electrolux which are a hybrid of the two. They have better features with the scale of their commodity parents.

So how expensive depends on brand and features within the brand, but I will answer the question based on the three segments and the product.

How much does an appliance cost (all prices are after rebates)

The difference between Frigidaire and Bosch is quietness and stainless steel versus plastic tub. Oddly enough, Frigidaire has more cycles. Miele is different than the any other for loadability with the third rack, better drying and an inferred 20 year life.

Refrigerators are the toughest to compare as each configuration like top mounts, bottom mounts, french door, counter depth, professional counter depth and integrated have a different price and pricing structure. Refrigerators become more expensive as they become larger and as importantly, shallower. Counter depth, professional counter depth and integrated refrigerators are the most expensive.

Gas Ranges

The difference in gas ranges would be freestanding with controls on the back versus the more expensive slide-in with the controls on the back. The professional ranges are the most expensive with all high-output burners and restaurant appearance. Convection, warming drawer and simmer capability are all added and more expenive features on the slide-in and freestanding ranges.

Electric ranges are somewhat similar to gas ranges as features like convection and warming drawer/second oven add expense. Induction (magnetic heat) is a different type of electric range. It is faster than a gas pro, better simmer, nearly child-proof and requires less venting.

The Best Electric Freestanding and Slide-In Ranges

It is very difficult to determine what is the best of anything. In many ways it would be simpler because we wouldn't need 25,000 sq ft. of display. In electric ranges, it is difficult because there are very different options. There are freestanding ranges, slide-in ranges and induction ranges all with different features and prices.

Below are arguably the best:

Freestanding Ranges

GE JB640SRSS $599 after rebates: One of General Electric's strongest product categories is ranges. They've always manufactured a range with great features, but it's always been somewhat expensive. The JB640SRSS is just a good range with basic features at an uncharacteristic low price $599.
Frigidaire FGEF3032KF $699 after rebates: Frigidaire is another good commodity product. This range is very similar to the GE JB640SRSS except it has a fifth burner element for warming into larger expandable burners for larger pots and odd shaped dishes.
Bosch HES7052U $1299 after rebate: I like the Bosch because it's different. It doesn't look like any other range and it has a lot of good features like convection and a bridge element for odd shaped pans like griddles. The Bosch also has a warming drawer which can keep food for up to three hours and refresh leftovers without dehydrating the food.

Induction Ranges

Induction is basically magnetic heat. It is faster than even the hottest professional gas burner, offers an instant simmer, emits less heat and requires less venting.

Frigidaire FPCF3091LF $1699: Frigidaire is actually a hybrid range. It is half induction and half regular electric, but it has really decent features like convection and a warming drawer. Frigidaire is also the least expensive induction range.
Electrolux EW30IF60IS: Electrolux probably has the most features of any product we sell. There is every cooking mode available, like dehydration for drying fruit. It even has a perfect turkey button. Electrolux is an all induction range with convection and a second oven below.

Slide-In Ranges

Slide-In ranges have controls in the front and don't have a backguard. A slide-in range also fits on top of the counters eliminating seams to clean. Slide-ins are aesthetically more pleasing because you can see the tile work behind the range itself (see Slide-In vs Freestanding Ranges).

Frigidaire FPES3085KF $1749: Although you can buy less expensive slide-ins, I like this particular Frigidaire for features like convection, warming drawer and bridge element on the top.

The Best Integrated and Professional Refrigerators

The difference between an integrated and professional refrigerator is depth. An integrated refrigerator fits within the depth of a 24 inch cabinet so the refrigerator is linear to the cabinet itself. The professional refrigerator has the compressors on the top and the door and handle will protrude into the kitchen. Both are highly desired in luxury kitchens and are appealing in different ways.

Most of the refrigerators on this list are either French door and regular bottom freezers, not side-by-side refrigerators. There is not enough refrigerator space at the most popular 36 inch width in a side-by-side refrigerator.

Sub-Zero BI-36: Sub-Zero is a different type of refrigerator. It's mission is to keep food fresher longer. The Sub-Zero features a vacuum seal and magnetic crispers to prevent air infiltrating/exfiltrating in the refrigerator and two compressors for better temperature regulation. Last year they added an air scrubber to prevent food from spoiling in the refrigerator itself. Sub-Zero will be manufacturing a french door refrigerator in 2013. During the home show, we will be warrantying all Sub-Zero products for five full years.
Thermador T36IT71NNP: Thermador manufactures a very good 36 integrated refrigerator (watch this video of an integrated refrigerator). It does not have the features of a Sub-Zero, but buy a Thermador refrigerator and double wall oven and receive a free dishwasher and hood.
Viking VCRB536RSS: The retooled Viking is a competitive refrigerator. We recently compared the Viking to a Sub-Zero refrigerator. Although it does not have quite the features of the Sub-Zero, Viking does have a $750 rebate and is available in a myriad of designer finishes.
Jenn-Air JF42NXFXDW: Jenn-Air manufactures the largest french door refrigerator at 42 inches wide. It is reasonably priced, and like Thermador, has aggressive rebates when purchased with other Jenn-Air products.
Liebherr CS-2062: Liebherr is the least expensive professional refrigerator starting at under $4999. It is still manufactured in Germany and is a good quality refrigerator.
Sub-Zero 648PRO: Honestly we do not sell many of these, but the 648PRO is one of the most heavily inquired products on our website. Sub-Zero manufactured the 648PRO to emulate a true commercial refrigerator. Most of the commercial refrigerators are not energy efficient enough to be sold in residential applications. The Sub-Zero, however, is not only rated for residential usage, but actually uses less energy than a 75 watt bulb.

Following are the answers to the various inquiries: It weighs 800 pounds. We use 4 to 5 guys plus electric stair climbers to deliver one of these beasts. During the home show, will be warrantying all Sub-Zero products for five full years.

The Best Free Standing and Slide-In Gas Ranges

Honorable mention goes to their top-of-the-line range, model FGGF305MF, which adds a convertible oven and warming drawer under the main oven.
Bosch HGS7052UC $1299 after rebate: I like the Bosch because it's different. Interestingly enough, the lower model Bosch stoves are actually manufactured by Frigidaire. This unit, however, is all Bosch with European convection for even cooking, a high output burner of 16,000 BTU and a very low simmer at 400 BTU. Frigidaire FPGS3085KF $1769: Like their freestanding product, the Frigidaire slide-in range has great BTU output with one burner at 17,000 and another at 15,000 BTUs. The oven is convection with a warming drawer underneath. Frigidaire also offers plenty of package rebates as well.
Electrolux EW30GS75KS $2699: Electrolux is for the client that wants every cooking mode possible. Electrolux delivers with every conceivable mode like dehydration, perfect turkey, bread proofing and convection convert. This slide-in has five burners on the top with the power burner of 18,000 BTU. There is convection oven as well as a second oven underneath.

The Best Front Load Washers

We have been blogging about front load washers since 2007. Front load washers are much larger than a conventional top load, yet use much less electricity, water and detergent. Front load washers also spin 2-3 times faster, so there is less actual drying time.

Frigidaire FAFW3801LW $449 after $50 rebate: Frigidaire is a good basic, 5 cycle machine. For about the same price as a decent top load washer, the Frigidaire front load washer will use far less energy with greater capacity.

Whirlpool WFW9151YW $599 after $125 in rebates: The Duet has been a mainstay for Whirlpool. It is slightly larger than the Frigidaire at 3.5 cubic foot (I am using DOE standards) and has 12 cycles.

Frigidaire FAFS4474LW $599 after $240 in rebates: The 4474 is Frigidaire's largest at 3.81 cubic feet and adds steam for powering out tough stains, a sanitize cycle as well as 15 other cycles. Ever changing rebates are high at 35%

Electrolux EIFLW55HIW $749: Electrolux is the biggest front load washer on the market and adds a second floor noiseless and vibration guarantee.

Whirlpool WFW94HEXW $999 after $90 in rebates: The WFW94HEXW is Whirlpool's largest at 4.3 cubic feet and has an unbelievable spin at 1400 RPM along with steam and allergen cycles.

The key to buying any appliance package (or any appliance) is to maximize rebates. There are product rebates, national buying group rebates, individual manufacturer rebates and manufacturer package rebates. Finding packages which incorporate all of these rebates is the basis of saving money.

Let's look at a few packages in three different categories:

Strangely enough, these packages are nearly identical with 18 cubic foot refrigerators, self-cleaning ranges, over the range microwaves with vents and middle-of-the-road dishwashers. Although I like the look of Whirlpool, the edge goes to Frigidaire for price.

I actually compared Bosch versus Jenn-Air last week, but this is a different comparison. Although both dishwashers are integrated with controls on the top, the Bosch is a better model. The Bosch french door refrigerator is bigger but the Jenn-Air is counter depth and will not protrude from the cabinet. The cooking is the biggest difference. The Jenn-Air microwave is combination convection but the Bosch is just straight microwave. The Jenn-Air range is a slide-in but the Bosch is free standing (see Slide-In vs Freestanding Ranges). I just think the slide-in is more linear and aesthetically pleasing.

Sub-Zero BI-36: Sub-Zero is a different type of refrigerator. It's mission is to keep food fresher longer. The Sub-Zero features a vacuum seal and magnetic to prevent air infiltrating/exfiltrating in the refrigerator, two compressors for better temperature regulation. Last year they added an air scrubber to prevent food from spoiling in the refrigerator itself. SubZero will be manufacturing a french door refrigerator in 2013. During the home show, will be warrantying all Sub-Zero products for five full years.

The Best Top Mount, Bottom Mount and Side by Side Refrigerators

It is amazing how sparse these three categories of refrigerators have become, all for different reasons. In 2007, there were new energy efficiency standards for all refrigerators. Most, with the exception of Frigidaire either curtailed or stopped manufacturing top mounts due to these more rigid standards.

In the bottom mount and especially the side-by-side category, french doors have become more popular. French doors offer split refrigerator doors of a side-by-side which is more convenient for islands as well as being more attractive. More refrigerator space and more lateral storage are the other attributes versus a side-by-side.

Still, there are very good reasons to buy a top mount, bottom mount or side-by-side refrigerator.

Frigidaire FGHT2144KF: 21 cu. ft. refrigerators have changed over the years to be slimmer and taller versus wider, so now this refrigerator can fit with in a 30 inch cabinet. This is the largest refrigerator to fit within this standard cabinet.

Amana, Whirlpool, Maytag and KitchenAid are manufactured in the same facility. I've always advised to pick the least expensive logo or package opportunity if warranted. This month it's Maytag.

We once exhibited at the Bayside Home Show 15 years ago and participated at The World Trade as well. Then we underwent the first of many renovations adding 6 live kitchens (we have 11 now). The idea was to show these products actually working, so clients would be able to compare technologies like professional gas, convection, speed ovens, steam ovens and induction across different brands.

Over the years, we started having chefs working on these products and brands. This year will be the best ever with chefs who are creative, passionate and fun to watch. It will be a great opportunity to learn.

Wolf DF304: Wolf actually offers two very good 30 inch ranges. They have a 30 inch non-self-cleaning, gas convection stove as well as this duel fuel range (read this post for the differences). The DF304 is unique. It offers an excellent consistent simmer at 500 BTU as well as the industries only twin convection oven for more precise cooking. We will extend their two-year warranty to five full years free from February 11 through February 20.

The Best American and European Dishwashers

Originally, American dishwashers were noisy and had plastic tubs but had plenty of features. Then, in the 90s, European dishwashers like Asko, Bosch and Miele imported into the United States virtually noise free dishwashers with stainless steel tubs, but were expensive and with few features.

Now, some American dishwashers are quiet and can have stainless steel tubs. The Europeans can have features and are more aggressively priced. The main differences are: American dishwashers have a heated dry cycle and a grinder at the bottom for leftover food while European dishwashers have a filter but tend to be quieter, more efficient and heat the water hotter.

Let's look at the best of both:


Frigidaire	Jenn-Air	Bosch	Asko	Miele

American Dishwashers:

Frigidaire DGBD2432KF $349 in B&W $399 in stainless: This Frigidaire dishwasher is a good, solid piece with tons of features. It does actually wash the dishes but is not particularly quiet and has a plastic, not stainless, tub.
Jenn-Air JDB8000AWS $699 after rebates: Jenn-Air is actually the same as KitchenAid (read this post, KitchenAid vs Jenn-Air Dishwashers). This unit has the same cycles as the KitchenAid and the same decibel rating or quietness at 49 DBs (which is good). KitchenAid has the grinder at the bottom and Jenn-Air does not. That is the real difference plus a less expensive price tag.

European Dishwashers:

Bosch SHE43RL5UC $699 after rebates: Bosch does sell a cheaper line of dishwashers called Ascenta, but they have plastic bottoms and lighter doors. This model, however, is a real Bosch with the main cycles, all stainless steel tub and noiseless operation.
Asko D5223XXLCS $799 after $400 in rebates: Asko was actually imported into the United States before Bosch. Somehow, the company believed it was worth $1200 for a dishwasher with basic cycles. At $799, the dishwasher is competitive, with all graphite racks and all stainless steel wash arms. Asko is also extremely quiet.
Miele G4205SS $1199: Miele is a company worth considering spending $1200 for a basic dishwasher (read this post, Are Miele dishwashers Really Worth It). Miele still manufactures all the components for their dishwashers except for the rollers underneath the racks, rather than outsourcing like every other manufacturer. Thus Miele dishwashers typically last far longer than any other brand. For February 11 through the 20th, we will either install a Miele free or provide a five-year warranty for no extra charge.

Most people will always look at Jenn-Air and Bosch and immediately ask which is better. Jenn-Air and Bosch are arguably the best affordable luxury brand in the market. They are both worthwhile and both have their competences.

So the answer depends on what you want...

Let's look at the packages:

The Companies:

Jenn-Air was an independent company until the late 80s when it was purchased by Maytag, who was purchased by Whirlpool. It languished until 2009 and has recently became aggressive with new products and rebate promotions. The strength of the line is cooking, especially slide-ins and pro ranges.

Bosch burst on the scene in the 90s with the worlds quietest and most efficient dishwasher. They added cooking to the mix and are strong in built-ins. I like Bosch, because it looks different and has always had a good value proposition. Curiously, the refrigerator seems limited with just a side by side in the all important counter depth category.

Let's compare the products:

The Jenn-Air is the sleeper pick, because it has convection and microwave integrated with the hood whereas Bosch is simply a microhood.

Bosch will be less expensive primarily due to a lesser expensive range and a less desirable refrigerator. The name, however, has a certain cachet with builders and upscale renovators who want a great name for less.

The Jenn-Air is an excellent consideration for great features like the convection microwave (so you have two ovens), french door refrigerator and slide-in. This package has real merit for the price and has captured customers from the $4000-7500 dollar range.

Stainless Kitchen Appliance Packages

Last week we toured a 3 million dollar home for appliance and kitchen ideas. This week, we will tour a 1.3 million dollar home in the same town. This home was built by Matt Hughes of Pinewood Development. It is amazing how large this place actually is at over 4000 square feet.

The kitchen and living room are conjoined in one "great" room as we have detailed in the blog over the last 5 years. This larger type of configuration has spurred interest certainly in quiet dishwashers as well as shallow depth refrigerators and built-in appliances.

Let's look and see what Matt built:

Products

Matt outfitted the kitchen with Bosch appliances. The french door refrigerator is Jenn-Air, because Bosch does not manufacture the product in a counter depth configuration. Bosch is a very smart choice with disctinctive styling and premium name recognition, which is important in new construction.

Bosch is also very aggressive with rebates and is more affordable than most luxury appliance brands without sacrificing features or aesthetics.

Bosch Dishwasher SHX7ER55UC $1275: In an open kitchen, the dishwasher must be functional of course, but also quiet. Bosch was really the first to build the product with quietness as a priority.

Sharp Microwave Drawer KB6524PS $839: Islands and open kitchens have really popularized the microwave drawer, as there are limited places to hang or build into a wall. It is also easier access, especially for children.

Bosch Gas Cooktop NGM5654UC $999: The Bosch cooktop is really a decent design with the 15,000 BTU burner in the middle and an attractive wafer thin (Monte Python, anyone?) design.

Bosch Hood DKE9365AUC $999: The European or triangular hood has become increasingly popular over the last 10 years, because the hood can stand alone without cabinets and be a kitchen focal point.

Bosch Double Oven HBL3550UC $2499: The Bosch is more affordable than most wall ovens, but retains its distinctive styling and still offers convection.

Jenn-Air Pro French Door Refrigerator JFI2089WES $3299: Matt opted for a counter depth french door refrigerator. French door refrigerators combine the full width storage of a bottom freezer with the shorter doors of a side by side refrigerator. In island configurations, shorter doors are important for space between the refrigerator and the island itself. He probably chose the Jenn-Air Pro to match the Bosch products.

Most of the above prices do not include rebates. If you are buying three or more of any brand, pay very close attention to rebates. At certain intervals, Bosch will have an additional 10-15% in form of a mail in rebate, which is in addition to any singular product rebates.

What Are The Best 18 Inch Dishwashers

The 18 inch dishwasher is almost exclusively an urban phenomenon. Typically, smaller apartments have smaller spaces with smaller kitchens producing the need for smaller appliances. 18" dishwashers are more popular than other smaller appliances like stoves and refrigerators where more space is more often needed.

When I started in this industry, 18 inch dishwashers were manufactured by one company, D and M Industries. Frigidaire and others labeled this dishwasher. Then two significant events ocurred; D and M went out of business and the European manufacturers started importing into the US. The Europeans use 18 inch dishwashers almost exclusively.

Now there is more choice then ever. Let's look at the four best:

Monogram ZBD1870SNSS: We do not sell Monogram anymore, and this is arguably the best piece in the line with good features, stainless steel tank and a reasonable price.

Frigidaire FFBD1821MS $629: How does Frigidaire manufacture a better 18 inch dishwasher than the more popular 24 inch size? Seriously. This dishwasher has a stainless steel tank, good basic features and a decent price. The Frigidaire is perhaps the best value of the four.

Bosch SPX5ES55UC $1099: Bosch was the first dishwasher to focus on quietness as well as function (read the post The Quietest Dishwasher Revealed).

Miele G4500SCISS $1399: The best dishwasher sold anywhere is a Miele. The only part not manufactured by Miele are the rollers under the racks, so the service rate on a Miele is less than any other appliance. Miele also has a unique drying system. The dishwasher lets air into the exterior of the side wall. The steam becomes attracted to the side and dissipates. At $1399, the price is higher than every other dishwasher. A Review Of The Best Professional Ranges

Many professional ranges all have a commercial appearance and very similar features:

Convection: Fan forced heat to maintain an even temperature.
High Output Burners: BTU output ranges from very hot at 15,000 to an inferno-like 22,000 BTU.
Simmer: Low temperature output for sauces and soups. Thermador is the lowest, but it is intermittent. Wolf and Viking maintain temperature more evenly.

Now lets look at the unique specs of each range. We will use dual fuel 48". 30" and 36" ranges have similar features just smaller profiles.

Wolf DF486 Professional Range: Wolf is the only company offering twin convection in the main oven, which allows for more precise cooking. Wolf also simmers extremely well with each burner maintaing a constant simmer of 500 BTU. The top is available with an infrared grill and french top configurations. Buy a Sub-Zero with a Wolf and receive a $1000 rebate (and $300 for every additional Wolf product, up to $2,500 total).

Thermador PRD48JDSGU Professional Range: Thermador has really changed this industry in terms of features with a steam oven and warming drawer standard on their 48" range. Steam is the most healthy way to cook, as it injects moisture so the nutrients are not baked out like traditional ovens (subscribe to our cooking newsletter if you want to be invited for a steam oven demo). The Thermador Harmony also adds a warming drawer, which can maintain food without dehydration for up to three hours. The top has a powerful 22,000 BTU burner and two burners with ultra low simmers of 200 BTUs. Thermador offers rebates of free dishwashers and hoods with purchase of a stove and refrigerator.

Viking VDSC4856GSS Professional Range: The original professional range has been improved with an 18,000 BTU burner and improved simmering on every burner. Viking is also available in every color of the rainbow and has a $750 rebate (which ends January) and another $150 for liking them on Facebook.

Jenn-Air JDRP548WP Professional Range: The retooled Jenn-Air is a very interesting range with two 20,000 BTU burners and state of the art controls. The JDRP548WP has a LCD screen for clock, timer and "doneness" control. The griddle is infused (love that word) with chrome, so it is much easier to clean. Jenn-Air has rebates and a free dishwasher with the purchase of the range.

Executing a Luxury Kitchen Design With Appliances

It is hard to believe my folks bought a place in Needham for $24,000. Of course that was 47 years ago. When I return to my hometown, the residences are profoundly different.

Let's look at a 3 million dollar home. I am not advocating spending or not spending this type of money on a residence, but it is a good idea to look at the high end for ideas.

Let's see what the builder, Metro Construction and Design, built on South Street:

In terms of luxury products, there seems to be two main designs. The kitchen appliances are either stainless steel or hidden behind cabinets for a more integrated approach. MetroCorp was also smart in choosing one manufacturer to maximize rebates.

Products:

Shaw Sink RC3018 - Farm sinks (sinks with an exposed apron or front) are a diversion from the undermount sinks as they call attention to the sink as a design element. Farm sinks at one time were for traditional kitchens, but can be used for any style. Shaw seems to be the product of choice for this type of sink.

Viking Integrated Dishwasher DFB450 - Integrated dishwashers with the controls on the inside have become more popular in the last decade. Bosch, Miele, Asko and KitchenAid all have integrated products.

Viking Columns DFFB530L and DFRB530R - Integrated refrigerator/freezer columns have become much more popular over the last few years. Integrated refrigerators differ from other counterdepth products, because the door does not protrude. In other words, the refrigerator looks like a cabinet. You can also customize the sizes and placement of the products. Sub-Zero, Thermador, Miele and Bosch also offer integrated columns.

Viking Double Wall Oven and Professional Cooktop VGRT5486GSS / VEDO5302SS - Cooking is the hardest part in planning a kitchen. The cooktop and wall oven combination allows for two equal size ovens without bending whereas the big professional range has your cooking in one central area. Both options completely change the layout of the kitchen. As I have said before, cooking should be where you start.

Viking Power Pack VBCV48381 with VINV1200 - I love the mantel hoods. Basically, you are using the cabinet as the capture area with the guts (power pack) of a hood to expel air.

This is a sensational, well conceived and designed luxury kitchen. Many of these ideas can be adapted to really any plan. BTW, the house is on 580 South St. Company is Metro Construction and Design.

A Review Of LED UnderCabinet Lighting

This post is a sequel to last weeks LED vs Xenon post. We added another display, so let's compare the different LED undercabinet lights. First, the benefits of LED are 40,000 hour lamp life, 90% efficiency and no heat emission. No heat means your peanut butter and chocolate will not melt in the cabinet above the light itself.

Some technical lighting answers (there is a video below).

Dimming LED: Some LEDs do dim, but most existing dimmers can not be used. LED uses so few watts that traditional dimmers cannot detect the bulb. Also, most magnetic dimmers need the wattage load to be at least 50% of the transformer capacity. Thus, a 60 watt transformer can only work at 30 watts or greater. Most LED undercabinet lights are 10 watts maximum.

24 Volt: The LED tape uses a different voltage, so it can be run across 60 feet without affecting the quality of the light, especially at the end.

A review of Kelvin temperature (this is important)

Kelvin Temperature: Kelvin is a color rendering or quality of light scale. 2500 degrees Kelvin is incandescent. An incandescent renders a warm, yellowish light. Older fluorescent lighting renders at 5000 degrees Kelvin and renders a harsh white light like the sun.

Halogen and low voltage are considered "white" lights at 2900-3100 degrees Kelvin, but only white compared to incandescent. Our showroom is all "white" LEDs on the appliance side as the light really emphasizes the stainless steel.

Second cabinet:

Jesco High output tape: 3.5 watts per foot (7 watts) 3000 Kelvin
Jesco Low output tape: 1.5 watts per foot (3 watts) 2700 Kelvin

I like the tape, because you don't see it. With the tape, you need to buy a LED driver at $170, but the per foot cost is cheap at $30 per foot. Big tip: You must see LED before you buy the product as the light quality really differs.
