36 years later, Argentina did it again and won the World Cup. Just after the game’s final whistle, I rushed to downtown Rosario. Along the way, thousands were sometimes walking several kilometers to celebrate at the Flag Monument. The joy was immense under a heavy sun, discover this series taken in the middle of the crowd. First date at the pizzeria

It is 10pm in the Marais neighbourhood in Paris. The neon lights of a pizzeria attract our attention, there is a “Blueberry Nights” atmosphere hovering around the place, so we get in and sit at the only availabe table. Next to us, by the window, a couple of young people are enjoying a drink and a pizza. It is definitely a first date. The man’s modern hippy look is clearly calculated, we are in Paris after all. She seems shy, but not easy to impress. Bribes of their conversation get to my hear. Somewhat mundane talks, daily life, work, …. Romance will or will not come later.

I take a picture of them discreetly. As we leave the place, I can’t help feeling some envy. Envy of being 20 years old in Paris and having a whole life in front of them.

Tales of superheroes

This picture was taken on Avenida Corrientes, which is the main street for entertainment in Buenos Aires. Be it musicals, plays for adults, or comics show for teens, the wide avenue if full of billboards and neons and makes it a great place for street photography. Also, it is not unusual to stumble upon young people dressed up like their favorite heroes.

While walking the Avenue, I spotted three superheroes coming towards me. I took a first “in your face” type of shot, but I wasn’t quick enough so they spotted me and were all smiles. Not a bad picture but I don’t like when my presence is seen and influences the picture. I had the 35mm Summilux at F1,4 on my M10 to get that wide angle look and out of focus background.

I went on with my walk down Avenida Corrientes but finally decided to return to the Obelisco which is the most busy part of the city. When I got there 30 minutes later, I spotted three superheroes inside a Mc Donalds have a passionate talk. At the time, I wasn’t sure it was the same teens I had shot before. Things happen so fast in street photography that you don’t remember every single person you take a picture of precisely. Also note that they had taken off their sweater, which might have led to the confusion. I quickly switched my lens to the 60mm Konica Hexanon since I thought it would provide better compression and allow me to remain unspotted. I opened the aperture to F1.2 so the less interesting background of the Mc Donald’s would be out of focus.

I got time to take two pictures before being spotted.

The first two are candids and I really like the second one since it shows the joy and passion of this teens. It really seems like they feel like superheroes and are enjoying a great moment between friends. The bokeh is smooth and the reflection of light bulbs creates a festive atmosphere.

Finally, I got spotted but again, it was all smiles ! It was only when I downloaded the pictures on my computer that I realized it was the same teens.

These pictures show what I believe in and enjoy shooting in street photography. Humanism, moments in life with a artsy spin!

The desired loneliness of fishermen

The world belongs to those who get up early, right ? It applies both to fishermen … and photographers I suppose. Last Saturday, I decided to get up early and drive to Rosario for an early outing. My idea was to take pictures downtown and find these spots where the sun hits early in the street. Yet, as I drove on the highway entering the city I noticed that the Parana River was covered with a very low band of clouds moving very fast. I therefore changed my itinerary and started walking by the riverfront where a dozen fishermen were already bravely enduring the cold weather. After taking a few pictures, I noticed that I could line up the sun, its reflection on the water and the silhouette of fishermen. I also noticed an elevated sidwalk that would help me get a higher vantage point of view. I am especially fond of high points of view since it allows you to have clean separation between your main subject and the background. Finally, I needed a subject and spotted this isolated fisherman. I then carefully placed myself so thT the fishermen silhouette would overlap the sun reflection in the water. I was set and after some patience, the sun finally peeked through the clouds, it was to time to click !

Phenix Girl

Every once in a while I stumble upon a picture and I do not understand what is going on. I guess it will be the case of many viewers in the case of this “fire girl” scene. Some people from Rosario that know the place will eventually figure it out but for others, I will go through the “making of” this picture.

I was on a short walk heading to the main cityscape of Rosario, this is the Monumento a la Bandera. In other words, a monument built on the very place where Argentina’s flag was created. The central part of the momument looks somewhat like a Greek temple made exclusively of columns. It is a place I often shoot, as you can also enjoy the fresh air from the nearby Parana River.

As I neared the monument, I hear the sound of electronic music coming from inside the structure and soon realized that a fashion show was about to take place. And at about the same time, rain started to pour intensively and made any retreat impossible. Therefore I took some shots from inside the structure but nothing really convinced me. Then I remembered a framing I had tried in the past from the front part of the monument and thought it could definitely work for this situation. Yes, but that would mean get completely soaked as I had to go all around the monument structure. Cheering myself up and remembering the “Get the Shot” philosophy, I just rushed into the heavy rainstorm.

Already completely wet,I slowly crept up the stairs of the monument to the level where I could get the models walking the runway but exclude the seated attendance. Part of the challenge was to have the four planes of this picture in symetry, so I meticulously lined up the columns and made sure the Cathedral would stand centered. I waited for one of the models to walk in and clicked. Note that I went for a F1.4 aperture on my 60mm Konica Hexanon lens. The idea was to compress planes but at the same time create a mysterious atmosphere by blurring the background.

Well, I am sure you are still wondering about one part of this picture, right ? What about the flames ? Well, it is a neternal flame placed in the middle of the momument to honour all these who fought during the Argentine Independence War. The trick was to wait for the model to walk just in front of the flame and cover it partially.

So no, this picture is not about the mystical aparition of a Phenix like girl. Yet it does explain the beauty of street photography: the ability to bolster our imagination with the scenes that we stumble upon everyday. The story is what you want it to be! (and this one cost me a heavy cold.)

The late bus

The night has fallen over Rosario, Argentina’s most dangerous city. A late bus makes a quick stop in lower downtown. A passenger jumps out like he suddenly has become the prey. He will rush home, lock himself up and won’t go back out until the next day.

This picture was taken from my car while I was stopped at a red traffic light. My initial idea was to isolate the car on the right bottom corner and use the store grate and orange light to create an abstract picture. So I was upsed when the bus suddenly entered the frame and stopped. I waited for it to go but suddenly my trafic light turned green, it was time to drive away. I reluctantly reframed to include the bus and quicky clicked before taking off. Only when I downloaded the picture did I notice the man jumping off, and it becomes the key element of the picture and my favorite one of Rosario so far this year.

Got the Blues under the rain

I like to play with colors. I saw the girl standing at the crossroad and spotted the incoming bus. Just as I clicked, someone walked in my field of view. Yet, sometimes street photographers get lucky, the umbrella was also blue.

Anticipation and patience

Two virtues of a street photographer are anticipation and patience. Analyzing a scene and people’s behaviors will allow you to anticipate what will occur next. Obviously, one of the beauties of street photography is that a scene never unfolds exactly like you think it would. Yet, in some cases, you’ll correctly guess. You then just need some patience for it to happen. In the case of the picture taken downtown Buenos Aires, the eyes and posture of the girl provided for an easy guess.
