Thompson, CT — One of the largest and most diversified events of its kind will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the Thompson International Speedway. Don Hoenig’s Original Automotive Swap Meet and Flea Market, in its 38th year, will open to buyers at 7 A. M. on both Saturday and Sunday mornings and will be held rain or shine.

The Thompson “Flea Market” is, in a word, huge. Well over 1500 sellers fill the grounds of the large speedway complex and that’s enough to attract tens of thousands of automotive enthusiasts, buyers who come prepared, and those looking for great buys or very specific parts. There is also the element of the curious who spend hours enjoying the tremendous quantity and quality of items for sale. The vast majority of those that fall into the curious category end up walking away with a treasured something that they spotted along the way.

The display area exceeds 100 acres and haulers are available to assist buyers with their purchases. Visitors can expect to see everything from well equipped display trailers offering new automotive items of every possible description to an old pick up truck filled with items that have been taking up space in a person’s garage. The variety of items is amazing; from brand new to classic antiques, race cars, parts and accessories, lawn and garden equipment and everything in between is what brings the buying crowd. Part of the fun, excitement and charm of the Flea Market is the “wheeling and dealing” that goes on. It is a proud New England tradition that is alive and well each year at this one-of-a-kind event.

Those wishing to sell items may purchase a space (15’ X30’) for the weekend and then showcase their items before thousands of potential buyers. Gates open at 5 A.M. for sellers on both Saturday and Sunday and at 7 A.M. for buyers and browsers on both days. Admission for this incredible event is only $10.00 and affords the buyer nine hours of fun before the sun sets and the gates close at 5 P.M.

The Speedway is located only minutes from exit 99 of Interstate 395 in northeast Connecticut. Directions from the Interstate exit are well marked to lead people to the East Thompson Road location. Another way to know exactly how to get to the Flea Market is to simply follow the line of traffic that is heading to this annual event.

The Carters took the motor out of Bertrand’s #47 after the NEMA final race at Thompson Speedway. The motor, which carried both driver Randy Cabral and Bertrand to their second straight respective championships, did not suffer a single breakdown throughout the season.

“Cole qualified sixth and finished third in last year’s race and he did that with average equipment from an engine perspective,” said Bertrand. ”We are excited about being with the Carter family again especially on this level.”

Carter was part of the Bertrand’s “guest driver” program in 2009 earning two top fives, including a second, in three starts.
The awards nights will be held Nov. 13-14 at the Concord (N.C.) Convention Center in an historic two-night celebration of the top drivers in NASCAR’s developmental series.

For the first time, the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards Banquet will be held in the Charlotte, N.C., area. The event, which honors champions from across North America in the series that is NASCAR’s grassroots foundation, will be Friday, Nov. 13 at 7 p.m. ET.

The inaugural Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala will be held the following night at 7 ET. The event will bring the top drivers and car owners from NASCAR’s top developmental series on stage for one memorable evening.

Earlier this season, live audio of the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour race from New Hampshire was streamed on the website to an overwhelmingly positive fan response. In addition, the final two NASCAR Camping World Series East races – from New Hampshire and Dover – could be heard live online.

“NASCAR continues to look at ways to improve the championship racing experience for our fans and to elevate the stature of our developmental racing programs”, said George Silbermann, NASCAR managing director of racing operations. “We are very pleased to provide unprecedented access to these two special celebrations for the fans of local NASCAR short track racing and our five regional touring series.”

“With moving the banquets to the Charlotte area, we have received tremendous response from drivers, teams and sponsors who plan to attend. We realize, though, that fans do not have the opportunity to travel to North Carolina and be part of these two major events. Being able to view the awards ceremonies live online is a great way for fans across the United States and Canada, and literally around the globe, to become NASCAR VIP virtual guests at these ceremonies, and be able to cheer for their favorite drivers and hometown heroes.”

Invited attendees to the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Awards banquets include the 2009 national champion, U.S. state and Canadian provincial champions, all 58 track champions, the national/state/provincial Rookies of the Year, and the 2009 Wendell Scott Trailblazer Award winner among others.

The NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Gala will feature the champions and top drivers from all of NASCAR’s North American regional touring series including invitees from the NASCAR Camping World Series East, the NASCAR Camping World Series West, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

NASCARHomeTracks.com provides NASCAR.COM with weekly touring series news, photos, standings and results, and features all the latest information from all of NASCAR’s developmental series.

The sixth annual awards banquet will be held at the Clarion Hotel, 1080 Riverdale St, West Springfield, MA.

Jonathan McKennedy, East Chelmsford, MA., scored four wins this season (Twin State, Seekonk, Oxford Plains, Beech Ridge) paving the way to his first series title. McKennedy held off a late season charge by veteran driver Rob Goodenough, West Swanzey, NH., to capture the title by a 15 point margin.

In addition to the new champion being crowned, the 2009 Koszela Speed “Rookie of the Year” award will be presented as will the DART Steel Engine Builder award. Specialty plaques will be awarded to the Most Improved driver, Tough Luck driver, Dedicated driver, Mechanic of the Year, and Sportsmanship recipient. The special awards are selected annually by series officials.

The fifth annual “7-11” award, a presentation made by New England Hall of Fame modified great Bob Polverari, will be awarded to the competitor who represents modified racing in a professional manner both on and off the track. Jack Bateman, Dwight Jarvis, Ed Dachenhausen, and Vinnie Annarummo, are former recipients of the prestigious award.

The 2009 season has been deemed a big success by series officials. 73 racers competed with the MRS in 2009. In 15 races, 12 different drivers were victorious.

Series founder Jack Bateman will address competitors looking ahead to the 2010 season.

The season is over for most of us. There are a few special events to run but for the most part our champions have been crowned. How did this season work out for you? Did you take time to enjoy all you have been blessed with? Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

One of the great things in racing is that we get to race. Not everyone gets a chance to do what they have a passion for. There are many that don’t have the opportunities we have been blessed with. Have you ever stopped and thanked God for all he has provided?

One of the thoughts that comes to mind this time of the year is how thankful we need to be for what we have been blessed with. We need only to look around and see others who do not have what we have.

Earlier this season I was blessed to accompany the Alex Kennedy Racing Team to Dartmouth Hitchcock Children’s Hospital in New Hampshire. We were given a tour of the facility that was set up to minister to the special needs of children and families that face challenging times that come with sickness. We then met with some of the patients and had the chance to brighten their day. We always need to remember that no matter how difficult things seem for us there are others who are dealing with more challenging days.

One of the things that we cannot let escape our attention is that we are truly blessed to be able to go out and race. The freedom to do what we enjoy doing. I remind you not to take it for granted, give something back.

As Christians we have been blessed with a Lord and Savior. We are reminded of the love that God has for us and the provision he made for our salvation. Paul reminds us how we should live our lives.

Ephesians 5:1-2; Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us as a fragrant offering and sacrifice to God.

We should live a life of love, but what does that mean? It means we should have compassion in our hearts for those who are less fortunate. We should be kind and forgiving. We should be willing to make some sacrifices to help others out. We need to be willing to serve.

Let me encourage you to take this time to reflect on all that you have been blessed with. If you need to be reminded, take some time and serve those who are less fortunate. Make a sacrifice this harvest season and you will enjoy it more than you ever have before. Show others the love that God showed to you. Remember; but for the grace of God there go I.

THOUGHTS FROM THE ROAD

GOOD NEWS FOR DICKY DOO- Dick’s son Todd Ceravolo gave us some good news about his father’s recovery. He is out of sedation and has been awake and alert for about a week. He is in recovery re-hab and on the road to recovery. Things are going well. Cards and well wishes can go to Dick Ceravolo, 1348 Baldwin Hill Rd., Gales Ferry, CT 06335.

HEADED SOUTH- Dan and I will make our annual pilgrimage to the center of racing. We are headed to the John Blewett Memorial North-South Shootout at Concord Motorsports Park. With the WOO also in town at the dirt track we may need to see if we can fit a trip over there in our schedule. It would be good to see but our first love is asphalt modified racing. Most of the modified community has made this event a must attend. It is always good to catch up with old friends and see what the plans for next year have been made.

MOTORSPORTS 2009- With the season over and the champions crowned we will be putting together our display for the show in Valley Forge. We should be able to bring the Camping World East and Whelen Modified Tour champion’s cars along with Dan’s newly wrapped pace car that has the commemorative hood. We are also looking at some additions that will enhance our booth. We are looking forward to seeing you there.

FAMILY TIME- One of the benefits that come with the end of racing season is the extra time for friends and family. Take the time and spend it with those who are important to you. Let them know how much you miss them.

The year’s NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion can finally celebrate in style. After moving South with his family many years ago, West Babylon, N.Y.-native George Brunnhoelzl III capped an unbelievable season in style, winning his first NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour championship.

Brunnhoelzl accomplished something his father or grandfather had not been able to do throughout their modified driving careers — win a NASCAR touring title.

The season featured 14 races held in five southeastern states with North Carolina hosting nine of the races throughout the year.

2008 NASCAR Whelen Modified Champion Ted Christopher decided to come down from New England for the first the race of the season and promptly won at Concord Speedway.

Andy Seuss, who finished second in the season-ending points standings, won the second race of the year at South Boston Speedway in April. Seuss enjoyed a season that featured four wins and he appeared to be the early favorite to challenge for the title. He finished a close second to Christopher at the first race of the season at Caraway Speedway and then closed out the spring schedule with a win at Lanier Speedway.

While Seuss was busy collecting early season wins, Brunnhoelzl was able to use three top-five finishes in the first four races to take over the lead from Christopher in the points standings.

Brunnhoelzl held just a two-point lead over Seuss heading into the Firecracker 150 at Caraway Speedway in July, but that was as close as the Hampstead, N.H., driver got the rest of the year as Brunnhoelzl picked up his first win of the year to build his lead to 17 points over Seuss.

The next race on the schedule was probably the deciding race of the 2009 championship points battle when the tour visited historic Bowman Gray Stadium on Aug. 1.

The accident-filled event was one for the record books as rookie Luke Fleming borrowed his dad’s car and won in his first career start on the tour, winning the Advance Auto Parts 199.

While Fleming celebrated in Victory Lane, Brunnhoelzl held his own celebration as he was able to limp home in second with a damaged race car while Seuss suffered problems and finished 14th to allow Brunnhoelzl to pad his lead to 66 points.

Brunnhoelzl was credited for a win at the first-ever NASCAR Whelen and Whelen Southern Modified Tour combination race at Bristol Motor Speedway after he was the highest-finishing southern regular in the race to build his lead to 81 points over Seuss.

2008 NWSMT champion Brian Loftin returned to Victory Lane, winning the next race at Caraway Speedway on Aug. 29 to give him the record for most career wins on the Tour, with 11. He had previously been tied with Junior and L.W. Miller with 10 victories each.

Seuss did his best to catch Brunnhoelzl by winning the first NASCAR-sanctioned modified race at Myrtle Beach Speedway on Labor Day weekend, but Brunnhoelzl finished second to stay ahead easily in the standings.

The duo of drivers split wins over the next two races at Caraway and Burt Myers was credited with his first win of the season as the highest- finishing southern driver in the Martinsville Speedway combination race.

Brunnhoelzl effectively clinched the title with his win in the rain-delayed race at Ace Speedway and clinched the title in impressive fashion, holding off John Smith’s attempt for his first win on the NSWMT to take the season finale Fall Classic 150 at Caraway and wrap up the title.

Brunnhoelzl nearly clinched all honors on the Tour in 2009 winning the most Coors Light Pole awards (6), most laps led (545), most top fives and top-10s (13 each) and laps completed (2,203).

Seuss finished second in the standings and won four races with Christopher, the only other driver to win multiple races on the NWSMT this season.

NWSMT Notebook: Season Wrap-Up

Winning In Style: Although all he had to do was start the Fall Classic 150 to claim the title, George Brunnhoelzl III (No. 28 Oval Speed/Fibrwarp/PT Ford) wanted to close out the season with a race win. Brunnhoelzl and John Smith (No. 25 Tutterow Surveying/Rick’s Home Improvement Chevrolet) raced side-by-side over the final lap and Brunnhoelzl was able to win the drag race out of Turn 4 to claim the win.

Finishing Strong: After a rough start to the 2009 season, Burt Myers (No. 1 Capital Bank Ford) finished with efforts he is more accustomed to during his five-year career on the NWSMT. Myers started his second-half run by winning a Coors Light Pole Award at Caraway in August. He also collected four consecutive top-five finishes to end the season — highlighted by his credit for a win at Martinsville in September for being the highest- finishing NWSMT regular.

Career Season: NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour veteran Gene Pack (No. 31 Comtech Solutions/Wings & Things Chevrolet) enjoyed his best season since he started competing on the tour several seasons ago.

Pack finished the year with two top-five and seven top-10 finishes. Pack’s best finish came at Bowman Gray Stadium when he grabbed third place. Pack also led a race-high 58 laps in the race at Myrtle Beach Speedway. Pack went on to finish fifth for his second top five of the year.

Veteran Representation: Mt. Airy, N.C., resident Frank Fleming (No. 40 Jerry Hunt Auto Sales/Pro Health Centers Pontiac) collected his best overall points showing with a fifth-place finish. Fleming recorded a season-best finish of second place at Caraway Speedway in July. Fleming also wins the overall Featherlite Most Improved Driver award for 2009. Fleming collected the post-race award four times this season, outdistancing runner- up Buddy Emory who finished the year winning the honor twice.

Jason Myers Keeps Streak Alive: For the fourth consecutive season, Jason Myers (No. 4 Capital Bank/Moorefield & Trantham Enterprises Ford) finished in the top six in the points standings. Myers has one career win on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and drives for his father and modified racing legend, Gary Myers.

Brunnhoelzl Collects Special Awards: George Brunnhoelzl will be celebrating after winning the 2009 championship, but he will also celebrate a couple of other honors at the awards gala on November 14th. Brunnhoelzl also won the Coca-Cola Move of the Race Award for the season, taking the honor three times, and he also won the most Coors Light Pole awards with six.

Tour Tidbits: Season Wrap-Up
Lia Moves Up Career Lists: Donny Lia’s 2009 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship season was highlighted by four wins, which moved him up to a tie for 12th on the career wins list with another two-time champion: Jimmy Spencer. Additionally, the Long Islander recorded a pair of Coors Light Pole Awards to also bring his career total to 15, which has him tied with Ed Flemke Jr. for 10th on the all-time list.

2009 Season Sees Preece Become College Student, Championship Contender: In between graduating from high school and starting college, Ryan Preece put together a title-contending campaign in just his third season in the Whelen Modified Tour. Preece, who turned 19 on the same day as the season ended at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway, recorded a Tour-high 10 top fives during the 13-race season and finished just 16 points behind champion Donny Lia in the standings.

Christopher Unable to Repeat Despite Stellar Season: Ted Christopher makes 50 look like the new 30 when it comes to racing as he seems to be in his prime. After capturing his first Whelen Modified Tour title in 2008 at the age of 50, Christopher turned in another dominant campaign in 2009, but was foiled by two DNFs late in the season. Christopher topped the standings for 10 of the 13 races and registered three wins and three poles, but had to settle for third in points.

Christopher’s Record Book Assault: Winning races is nothing new to Christopher, he’s been at it throughout his career. With three more wins in 2009, Christopher is now up to 34 for his career, one shy of tying Tony Hirschman for third on the all-time list. With three Coors Light Pole Awards this season, his career total now sits at 21, which ranks eighth. All three poles came at the beginning of the season, and it was the first time in the 25 years of the Whelen Modified Tour that a driver had earned more than one to start a season.

Stefanik Returns to Victory Lane: For the 70th time in his career, and record-setting fifth time at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, Mike Stefanik took the checkered flag. Stefanik – who holds nearly every Whelen Modified Tour record – has recorded at least one win in every season he has competed full time, and of the 25 years of the Whelen Modified Tour, he has wins in 22. With his triumph at Martinsville, Stefanik became the first driver in any NASCAR series outside the Sprint Cup Series to earn 70 victories.

Solid Campaign for Pennink: Like Preece, Rowan Pennink’s third Whelen Modified Tour campaign was by far his best. The Pennsylvania native recorded five top fives and tied with two other drivers for the most top 10s with 11. In his previous two seasons, Pennink had a combined eight top 10s with no top fives.

Another Top-Five for Szegedy: Although he missed out on a trip to Victory Lane for the first time as a full-time competitor, Todd Szegedy was able to extend his streak of top-five points finishes to four years running.

Tomaino, Flemke Build on Streaks: Whelen Modified Tour stalwarts Jamie Tomaino and Flemke continued their amazing string of starts in 2009. Tomaino became the first driver to record 500 career starts and has missed just five of the 516 all-time races, while Flemke’s record streak for consecutive starts was extended to 324.

Year-End Awards Gala Set In Industry Hub
NASCAR will honor its “stars of tomorrow” and short-track veterans by gathering them in the greater Charlotte area for two special year-end celebrations.

With a special week of activities culminating in the 2009 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (NWAAS) Awards Banquet on Friday, Nov. 13, and the new NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Awards Gala on Saturday, Nov. 14, NASCAR brings its season-ending ceremonies home to the industry hub — Concord, N.C.

“This is a tremendous opportunity to raise the bar for all of NASCAR’s developmental racing series, by bringing the champions from all of our series to the core of much of the motorsports industry,” said George Silbermann, managing director of racing operations. “In addition to these two prestigious awards banquets, we are planning a number of special activities for our series champions, for attending track operators and for the industry. We look to take full advantage of what this hub of the stock-car racing industry has to offer.”

Both season-end awards banquets will be held in the recently-completed Embassy Suites Hotel Concord Convention Center which is located near the NASCAR Research & Development Center, in proximity to the future NASCAR Hall of Fame complex, as well as the home bases of many of today’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, NASCAR Nationwide Series and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series teams.

Moving the banquets to the Charlotte area complements the commitment the community has made to the business of NASCAR and the development of the NASCAR Hall of Fame scheduled to open May 2010.

The NWAAS Awards Banquet will feature weekly racing drivers from top short tracks across the United States and Canada. Invited attendees will include the 2009 NWAAS national champion, NWAAS state and provincial champions, all 58 track champions, the national/state/provincial rookies of the year, the 2009 Wendell Scott Trailblazer Award winner and many others.

The NASCAR Night of Champions Touring Gala will feature the champions and top drivers from all of NASCAR’s North American regional touring series including invitees from the NASCAR Camping World Series East, the NASCAR Camping World Series West, the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour and the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series.

Up Next: NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown
NASCAR’s premier short-track racing showcase, the 2010 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, will be run Jan. 29-30 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.).

The seventh running of the event, which brings together the top racers from across North America for the “Daytona 500 of short-track racing,” will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR Camping World Series all-star race.

The schedule also includes a 100-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race and a 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race. Both nights of racing will air live on SPEED as part of full weekend of racing on SPEED that includes the Rolex 24 at Daytona sports-car event.

The NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown was held in the fall for its first five years. It was moved to January last year to give competitors more time to prepare and also to increase exposure for drivers and teams.

The result was an event that had everybody talking. Current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate Joey Logano went for the win on the final turn of the final lap and collected race leader Peyton Sellers. Instead of a second straight showdown victory, Logano was penalized for the move, and the victory went to Matt Kobyluck, giving him his second career win in the event.

It was just another of a long line of exciting finishes to the all-star race.

Each race winner during the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Series season earned a protected starting spot in the main event. Also, 2009 series champions of NASCAR’s regional touring series – the NASCAR Camping World Series East (Ryan Truex), NASCAR Camping World Series West (Jason Bowles), NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (Donny Lia), NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour (George Brunnhoelzl III), NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (Andrew Ranger), and NASCAR Mexico Series (Germán Quiroga) along with the 2009 national champion for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (Philip Morris) have protected starting spots.

The remainder of the starting lineup will be determined through time trials, limited provisionals for NASCAR Camping World Series regulars and the last-chance “Open” race that provides drivers one final chance to make the grid.

New this year, the top five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state champions – as determined by the final national standings – entered in the Late Model race will be eligible for protected starting spots.

The 2009 season for the NASCAR Camping World Series East featured arguably the best rookie class in history as four first-year drivers finished in the top 10 in the standings and nearly two-thirds of the checkered flags were captured by cars with a yellow stripe.

Heading the class was Ryan Truex, who not only earned Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors, but captured the 2009 Camping World Series East championship as well. Only current NASCAR Sprint Cup Series rising star Joey Logano had accomplished that feat prior to Truex.

Truex, from Mayetta, N.J., won three races in his first season as a development driver for Michael Waltrip Racing. For the son of Martin Truex Sr. and younger brother of Sprint Cup Series driver Martin Truex Jr. – both former competitors in the Camping World Series East – the season didn’t get off to a roaring start. A stellar mid-season run and strong finish, however, was enough to edge veteran Eddie MacDonald by 34 points for the title.

Three races into the season, Truex had recorded an average finish of 21st, but the turnaround was dramatic. In the fourth race of the season, Truex captured his first 21 Means 21 Pole Award presented by Coors Light at South Boston (Va.) Speedway and finished third in the race for his first career top five. That effort began a streak of seven straight podium finishes – highlighted by wins at Watkins Glen (N.Y.) International, Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway and Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Conn. – that moved him from 12th in the standings to just one race away from the title.

Heading to the season finale at Dover (Del.) International Speedway, Truex maintained a slim 30-point margin on MacDonald, but when the checkered flag flew, the former crossed the line one position ahead of the latter and the trophy was in hand.

In the season finale at Dover, Truex wasn’t the only standout rookie celebrating. Brett Moffitt of Grimes, Iowa, dominated at the “Monster Mile” for the second win of his rookie campaign. Driving for Camping World Series East veteran Andy Santerre, Moffitt won the pole in his series debut and went on to register six top fives and nine top 10s, good enough for third place in the season standings.

Joe Gibbs Racing development driver Matt DiBenedetto made a big splash as well in 2009. The Grass Valley, Calif., native had an average finish of 6.7 in just seven starts with a win at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, N.C., and a last-lap battle with Truex in June at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon, N.H., that resulted in another victory. DiBenedetto earned a series-high three 21 Means 21 Pole Awards presented by Coors Light and led more laps than any driver despite participating in just two-thirds of the races.

While Truex, Moffitt and DiBenedetto were perhaps the most prominent, the 2009 rookie class also had depth. Alan Tardiff registered eight top 10s – including a season-best third place at Tri-County – and finished seventh in points despite not competing in one race. Alex Kennedy’s respectable season resulted in a 10th-place finish in the standings with three top 10s, highlighted by a career-best finish of fourth at Lime Rock.

Matt Kurzejewski made nine starts and was 15th in the standings while Jarit Johnson, the younger brother of three-time defending Sprint Cup Series Champion Jimmie Johnson, finished 17th in points with seven starts.

A host of other up-and-coming racing talents also had impressive efforts in spot starts in 2009. Richard Childress Racing’s Ryan Gifford had an average finish of 6.3 in four starts while Childress’ grandson, Ty Dillon, had a pair of top 10s in three outings. Max Gresham, who split time in the JGR No. 18 with DiBenedetto, also recorded two top 10s in three events. Noted road racer Patrick Long had an average finish of ninth in four outings and nearly won at Watkins Glen while dirt racers Kevin Swindell and Josh Richards showed plenty of asphalt talent in their six combined starts.

NCWSE Notebook: Season Wrap-Up
MacDonald Records Highest Points Finish: While he came up just short of his ultimate goal – winning the NASCAR Camping World Series East championship – Eddie MacDonald turned in the best season of his career nonetheless. A competitor since 2001, MacDonald’s best points finish prior to this year was his seventh-place effort in 2008, but the veteran recorded a series-high 10 top 10s and finished as the title runner-up. MacDonald’s campaign was highlighted by the first Coors Light Pole Award of his career at Adirondack International Speedway and a sweep of the pole and checkers at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in September.

Lavender Has Strong Run in Second Season: With an unaffiliated program like MacDonald’s, Jody Lavender and the No. 88 team put together a strong title-contending run in 2009. After finishing 11th in points the previous season, Lavender led the standings for four races this year on the strength of five top-five efforts. He went to the season finale at Dover International Speedway with a mathematical shot at the crown, but ended up fourth in points, one of the best improvements from 2008 to 2009.

Park Back in Victory Lane: Veteran Steve Park, who has wins in every level of NASCAR racing, earned his first win the Camping World Series East in 13 years when he took the checkers at Adirondack. Park also earned his first East Series pole at Thompson (Conn.) International Speedway in 2009, and finished fifth in points on the strength of seven top 10s.

Defending Champ Kobyluck Slips to Sixth: After a dominant 2008 campaign that resulted in his first Camping World Series East title, Matt Kobyluck had to settle for a sixth-place finish in this year’s standings. Although he was able to record seven top 10s on the year, Kobyluck was held out of Victory Lane for the first time since 2003.

Delaney, Duff Make Large Strides in 2009: Like Lavender, Dustin Delaney and Ryan Duff also made significant strides in 2009. Delaney finished 13th in points last year with no top 10s, but recorded four in 2009 and wound up eighth in the standings. Duff, who finished 20th in 2008, made the show all 11 times this year and improved to ninth in points. Both also recorded career-best race finishes in 2009.

JGR No. 18 Has Impressive Season: Four poles and three wins among three drivers earned a second-place finish in the owner standings for the No. 18 of Joe Gibbs Racing. Matt DiBenedetto captured three poles and two wins in the Toyota Camry in just seven starts while Max Gresham kept the car up front with two top 10s in three starts. NASCAR Sprint Cup Series star Kyle Busch earned both the Coors Light Pole Award and the race victory in a moonlight effort for JGR in the car at the East-West combination race at Iowa Speedway. Busch’s pole, along with DiBenedetto’s at Dover, set new track records, and DiBenedetto’s win at Tri-County was the first for a Toyota in the 23-year history of the series.

Hernandez Excels With Unplanned Opportunity: The offseason merger of Dale Earnhardt Inc. with Chip Ganassi Racing left DEI development driver Jesus Hernandez without a ride for 2009 after he finished third in points the previous season. Opportunity knocked last minute, however, as car owner Troy Williams needed a fill-in for his No. 12 car due to scheduling conflicts with NASCAR Mexico Series driver Antonio Perez, who was to pilot the ride. Turns out, there would be nine such conflicts during the 11-race schedule. Hernandez went out and registered six top 10s to help Williams finish eighth in owner points.

Moving the banquets to the Charlotte area compliments the commitment the community has made to the business of NASCAR and the development of the NASCAR Hall of Fame scheduled to open May 2010.

The seventh running of the event, which brings together the top racers from across North America for the ”Daytona 500 of short-track racing,” will be highlighted by the 225-lap NASCAR Camping World Series all-star race.

The schedule also includes a 100-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Super Late Model race and a 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race. Both nights of racing will air live on SPEED as part of a full weekend of racing on SPEED that includes the Rolex 24 at Daytona sports-car event.

Also, 2009 series champions of NASCAR’s regional touring series – the NASCAR Camping World Series East (Ryan Truex), NASCAR Camping World Series West (Jason Bowles), NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour (Donny Lia), NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour (George Brunnhoelzl III), NASCAR Canadian Tire Series (Andrew Ranger), and NASCAR Mexico Series along with the 2009 national champion for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series (Philip Morris) have protected starting spots.

The remainder of the starting lineup will be determined through time trials, limited provisionals for NASCAR Camping World Series regulars, and the last-chance “Open” race that provides drivers one final chance to make the grid.

New this year, the top five NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state champions – as determined by the final national standings – entered in the Late Model race will be eligible for protected starting spots.

Seekonk, MA — With an eye toward the future, Seekonk Speedway held their annual rules meetings with all competitors on Tuesday and Wednesday, October 27th and 28th. While most of the bantering was over different procedures, some changes did come out of the meetings.

The biggest change in the rules centered around the Late Model division. For the past two seasons, competitors from area speedways could come in and compete under the New England Late Model rules package, but only for up to 6 shows. In 2010, any Late Model can come in and compete for the full season, but must run either the current Seekonk Speedway Late Model rules, which will go virtually unchanged for the upcoming season, or compete under the American Canadian Tour (ACT) rules package. This will allow competitors from tracks such as Waterford, Lee USA, White Mountain and more to come in and compete for the 2010 Championship, instead of being forced to only a handful of events.

“We want to expand our Late Model division for 2010,” Race Director Dave Alburn Stated. “I didn’t want to force a change to our competitors at a cost to them, and I feel that we have some of the best teams around. But from a business standpoint, I see where the Late Models may be heading, and don’t want to cut ourselves, or our fans, short.” Another rule change for the Late Models, and as well for the Pro Stocks, is any competitor running a stock Camaro type snout, will get a weight break of 25 pounds.

In the Pro Stocks, the only other clarification was for the cars that compete with a non-crate engine. If they decide to compete with an open-competition style engine, there will only be a 50 pound penalty assessed.

In the Seekonk Sport Trucks, most of the talk was surrounded around the body configuration. “I want the bodies to resemble trucks from the front to the rear,” Alburn added. “I don’t want the slanted back panels. This is a Truck division, and I need for them to resemble the trucks on the road.” It was also stated the flywheels must remain solid, meaning no holes drilled into them. There must also be a 2” inspection hole in the bottom of the bell housing, to allow the Tech Inspector to get a look at the flywheel without removing the transmission.

One concern in the Street Stock division is the cost of the rear ends in the cars. There are several options out there, including the Ford 9” rear end. In 2010 there is the allowance of the full floater rear ends for the Street Stocks. There was also the clarification in the exhaust rules. There are 2 mufflers mandatory, and MUST have a 3” inlet port and outlet port.

The Pure Stocks did not get any changes to the cars, but did get some clarification on the procedures for handicapping and driver eligibility. The driver cannot win more than 3 championships in the Pure Stocks, as this is a beginner division. Drivers are required to retire from the class upon their third title, regardless of how long. In the handicapping of the features, the winner of the previous race will start last in the field. If you miss the previous week, you will start just ahead of the previous week’s winner.

The claimer rule in its current form will undergo a change. From being able to purchase the complete car, a driver finishing second may claim the engine from the winning car. The parameters and fee is to be determined at this time. Roll cage setup and design was discussed, as well as a compression and cam rule. Those are to be determined at this time.

The Seekonk Youth Racing Association was part of the meetings as well. This younger generation class was not without discussion for a few topics. It was stated that transponders will be mandatory for 2010. This is for a variety of reasons, including driver development and scoring. It was also brought up that the restrictor plates for the 600 class can be leased for the season. Instead of picking up a plate each week, a team will be assigned one at the opening practices, and will be responsible for that plate all season long. A fee will be assessed if the plate is damaged, and must be available for inspection at any time. This is not mandatory, but recommended, so teams will not have to remove them at the conclusion of each event. The competitors brought up the possibility of a gear rule for the 600 class, as well as driver eligibility in each of the SYRA classes.

This is just an overview on the rules meetings, and do not outline completely what was talked about. Before making changes to the cars in any of the divisions, the management requests that you contact your divisions’ tech official with any questions or clarifications.

The next event on the calendar is the 64th Annual Awards Dinner and Celebration. This gala will be held on Saturday, January 16, 2010. It will be held, as always, at the Venus De Milo on Route 6 in Swansea, MA. Tickets are $30 per person, and can be purchased through the speedway office. Join us as we close out the 2009 season in style.

Philip Morris is used to battling for the championship on the final race of the season. Each of his first two national championships — in 2006 and 2008 — featured must-win scenarios when he took the track for that last race.

This time, however, it was Morris’ reign at Motor Mile Speedway in Radford, Va., that was on the line as he held a slim two-point lead over rival Frank Deiny Jr. Morris took care of business with a second-place finish to claim his seventh track championship at the .416-mile oval.

Morris had previously used a strong August run (two wins, a second and a third from Aug. 8-29) to wrap up his third NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.

The Ruckersville, Va., Late Model driver is just the second driver to win more than one national championship, joining the late Larry Phillips, who won NASCAR’s top short-track honor five times between 1989-96.

The 44-year-old Morris collected nine wins, 20 top fives and 23 top 10s in 28 starts for 841 points.

Connecticut asphalt Modified driver Keith Rocco finished second with 816 points, followed by California Super Late Model driver Nick Joanides with 813.

The way the season started, it looked like Morris was on cruise-control toward yet another championship. He rolled off four straight wins to open defense of his NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national championship.

He continued his hot streak in the first two weeks of May—running twin features the first weekend at his home track of Motor Mile and twin features the next at his home-away-from-home of South Boston (Va.) Speedway — and earning a two wins and two runner-up finishes in the No. 26 Clarence’s Steakhouse Chevrolet.

Then came the rough stretch. From May 23 to Aug. 1, Morris won just once more and had almost as many finishes outside the top 10 (four) than inside the top five (five).

While Morris was struggling, Rocco surged to the top of the standings. The Wallingford, Conn., driver was running three nights a week — Thursdays at Thompson International Speedway, Fridays at Stafford Motor Speedway, and Saturdays at the Waterford Speedbowl — and was clicking off the wins. By July 17, he had 11 victories. After finishing fourth in the nation in each of the previous two seasons, the 24-year-old was on pace to unseat Morris.

Lurking back was Joanides, who didn’t reach the 18-race threshold until the closing weeks of the season. A driver’s top 18 finishers are counted toward their state/province and national points totals.

Morris, though, showed the great closing ability that netted his the first two championships. In the final six races, he had two wins, two seconds and a third.

It was a win by Morris at Motor Mile on Aug. 8, in which Morris nosed out Deiny by .024 seconds at the finish line, that allowed him to leapfrog Rocco back into first place in the standings.

From there, Morris never relinquished the lead.

Rocco finished with 13 wins, 31 top fives and 35 top 10s in 45 starts, while Joanides ended up with 13 wins and 21 top fives in 21 starts in the Super Late Model division at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.).

Morris (Virginia), Rocco (Connecticut) and Joanides (California) also won their respective state NASCAR Whelen All-American Series state championships.

Bill Leighton Jr. of Omaha, Neb., who won dirt Late Model championships at Junction Motor Speedway in McCool Junction, Neb., and I-80 Speedway in Omaha, finished fourth with 803 points. Plainville, Conn., driver Ted Christopher, who races against Rocco at Thompson and Stafford, rounded out the top five with 779.

NWAAS Notebook: Season Wrap-Up
Gomes Wins Inaugural Rookie of the Year: For the first time, NASCAR provided an award for first-year Feature Division license holders. Jacob Gomes, 16, of Manteca, Calif., was the inaugural NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Rookie of the Year presented by Jostens. He won three features at his home track of The New Stockton 99 Speedway, a .250-mile paved oval in Stockton, Calif. He also competed at All American Speedway in Roseville, Calif., and Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Both of those tracks are .333-mile paved ovals.

Three Females Capture Rookie Honors: Three females earned U.S. state/Candian province Rookie of the Year honors – Sloan Henderson of Franklin, Ohio, Natalie Sather of Fargo, N.D., and Maxime Paquine of Montreal, Quebec. Henderson, 17, made 29 starts at Columbus (Ohio) Motor Speedway and Kil-Kare Speedway in Xenia, Ohio, where she posted six top 5s and 19 top 10s. Sather, 24, raced her first season on asphalt at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Wash., where she had eight top fives and 17 top 10s in 17 races. Paquine had two tops 5s and eight top 10s in 14 races at Autodrome St. Eustache (Quebec).

Title Defense: Nine drivers were able to repeat their 2008 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series U.S. state or Canadian province championships in 2009. They include Erica Thiering, Alberta, Canada (Edmonton International Raceway); Dave Haworth, British Columbia, Canada (SunValley Speedway); Keith Rocco, Connecticut (Waterford Speedbowl, Thompson International Speedway and Stafford Motor Speedway); Bill Leighton Jr., Nebraska (I-80 Speedway and Junction Motor Speedway); Jeff Strunk, Pennsylvania (Grandview Speedway); Jonathan Bouvrette, Quebec, Canada (Autodrome St. Eustache); Marty Ward, South Carolina (Greenville Pickens Speedway); and Naima Lang, Washington (Evergreen Speedway).

Eckrich Back On Top At Iowa: After winning the 2007 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Iowa state title, Eckrich watched that honor go to Brian Harris in 2008. Eckrich reclaimed the title, though, in 2009, with seven wins and a national-high 32 top fives and 36 top 10s.

Catalano Makes Spencer History: Amy Catalano, 35, of Ontario, N.Y., edged Chris Finocchario and her brother-in-law, Buck Catalano, by 22 points to win her first track championship at Spencer Speedway in Williamson, N.Y. She became the first female in track history to win the Feature Division championship. Earlier in the year, she scorer her first career win. Catalano also won twice at Holland (N.Y.) Motorsports Complex.

New England Legend Rowe Adds Another Title: Mike Rowe, 59, of Turner, Maine, is one of the most decorated drivers in New England and he added to that resume by winning the Late Model championship at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine.

Swaim Wins Third Caraway Crown, First NC Title: Travis Swaim, 30, of High Point, N.C., won the tough NASCAR North Carolina state championship and earned his third Late Model championship at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C. He also topped the track standings there in 2004 and 2005.

Crum Wins Martinsville Late Model Race: Jake Crum drove into the history books on Oct. 4, becoming the youngest winner of the Bailey’s 300 – the prestigious NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model race at Martinsville Speedway. The Statesville, N.C., driver held off fellow 18-year-old drivers Brandon McReynolds and Brennon Poole on a green-white-checkered finish that pushed the main event to 202 laps. Crum eclipsed the record set by Alex Yontz, who was 20 when he won the race in 2007.

Up Next: NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown
NASCAR’s premier short-track racing showcase, the 2010 NASCAR Toyota All-Star Showdown, will be run Jan. 29-30 at the Toyota Speedway at Irwindale (Calif.).
