It’s not to late to get that spring clean up done and get your lawn to off to strong and healthy start. With the extremely late spring we are having this year on the west coast now is a great time to book a spring clean up package with us.

Power raking is essential to getting the thatch (dead grass) and moss out of your lawn to make room for new lawn growth. Pairing power raking and deep core aeration helps give your lawn the jump start it needs in spring, helping increase fertilizer uptake, and reducing soil compaction, making this one of the best things you can do for you lawn.

Spring Clean Up

1 Power Rake

1 Lime Application

1 Fertilizer

1 Moss Control

On now for $195.00

Add Deep Core Aeration for $49.00

Lawns that are well cared for rarely have moss. But sometimes, in spite of your best efforts, moss happens. Killing the moss may temporarily eradicate the problem, but it could return if you don’t figure out why it’s there in the first place.

First, make sure you’re practicing good lawn care. Next, check your light levels. Moss thrives in medium to dense shade. If the lawn isn’t getting enough light, the grass will then, and weaken, allowing moss to take hold. Prune overhanging shrubs and trees to improve light levels and air circulation.

Pay special attention to water. Lawns that are poorly drained or waterlogged in summer or winter can produce moss. install drainage, add sand or regrade the soil to allow for better runoff. Compacted soil can also be a culprit. Aeration reduces compaction.

Lawn-cutting techniques might also be a factor. Lawns that are repeatedly “scalped” are more susceptible to moss.

Sometimes moss occurs in soil that’s too acidic. Don’t assume this is the case and try to correct it with lime, right away. Have the soil tested first.

If the moss persists once you’ve addressed those issues, consider embracing Mother Nature. After all, the Japanese have entire gardens made of moss. A small corner devoted to moss in your own yard can be an aesthetically pleasing counter point to the rest of the garden.

Cheers!

Just like you know your family, you should also know you grass. It may be greener on the other side of the fence, but it may be different then yours. Making the right decision when it comes to grass variety can be the difference between a beautiful rich lawn and a dead and dying one.

Cool-season grasses grow best in our climate (South Western BC). These include bentgrass, blue grass, fescue, and ryegrass.

As summer can be quite warm in places, seed mixes (a blend of several grass types) are a great idea if you live in an area that experiences wide climate swings.

That said, other conditions sometimes merit specific grasses.

Do you need a cool-season grass for a shady spot? Try fine fescue. Looking for a grass that will stand up to heavy foot traffic? Try a mix of Kentucky bluegrass and perennial rye. If heat’s the issue and you need something drought resistant, plant Kentucky bluegrass.

Finally, not all varieties are created equal. Bentgrass and St. Augustine are both high maintenance. Kentucky bluegrass requires lots of fertilizing, dethatching (power raking) and more sun than other varieties. Bahia grass is drought tolerant but prefers frequent mowing.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you might have.

Cheers!
