Standard Shower Head

There’s nothing wrong with opting for a simple yet elegant standard shower head. What I mean by a standard shower head is one that’s stationary, sometimes immoveable or with limited movement (we don’t want the water slapping you in the face) that may be slightly angled. Standard shower heads usually don’t possess any bells and whistles but if you’re looking to give that shower head a little pizazz, try a shower head with imbedded LED lights. Some of these lights are static, meaning they are one solid color and can’t be changed. While some lights are dynamic, meaning not only are you able to change the colors but you can change the patterns said colors appear. Think blinky Christmas lights meet shower.

Detachable Shower Head

Detachable shower heads are perfect to get right up close and personal with your skin. They really get in every nook and cranny. Detachable shower heads are similar to standard shower heads with the exception of the ability to be removed and used. These shower heads are ideal for washing your shaggy dog and prove to be helpful during your weekly Saturday morning tub cleaning.

Rain Shower Head

Forget what I just said above. Turns out, you can have that spring shower rain in your home by installing a rain shower head in your bathroom. A rain shower head is unique as it’s essentially an oversized version of a standard shower to allow more water to shower you. In most cases, this shower head is placed directly above your head. The water pressure of a rain shower head varies. It’s perfect to completely immerse yourself in your shower and rinse all that shampoo residue out with ease.

Shower Head with Handheld Head

Shower heads with a handheld head are the best of both worlds. These shower heads usually consist of a stationary shower head with a detachable handheld placed below.

High-pressure

To some, a high-pressure shower head may feel like needles being pricked in the small of your back. To others, these shower heads are like having a relaxing deep tissue spa massage. High-pressure shower heads tend to come in multiple setting such as massage, rain, mist, and even a water saver mode. For those that take long showers, that water saver mode will save your wallet from drowning.

Pets are a joy to have. They are the perfect companions for single folks and a warm fluffy pile of love to a growing family and every situation in between. The problems that arise with owning pets are ensuring they don’t destroy your things and carving a space out in your home for them. Whether your pet is big or small or you’re tight on space for them, there are some space efficient ideas that will help you create a pet friendly space. (Note: We’re going to focus our attention on cats and dogs).

Beams and Elevated Platforms

Cats tend to climb on everything, especially the counter tops. You may even spot your feline friend tucked away on top of the fridge. Adapt your home to their wild instinct. Install extra ceiling beams or elevated platforms cascading down the wall for them to walk on. Maybe now they’ll stay off the counters.

Nooks and Crannies

Some pets find comfort in small, dark places while others love to snuggle in bed with you. On the days you rather not share your bed with the fluffy one, create a little nook for them in your side table. Simply place a cushy pillow in the cubbyhole. That way, they’re close without invading your personal space.

Teepee

If you don’t want to dedicate your book space for your pet, opt for a doggie tent or teepee. Place a doggie bed or oversized pillow in the teepee. Unless you have a large area to dedicate to your pet, I suggest using this idea for small dogs.

Hanging Out

There goes that cat again, making the top of the refrigerator its new home. You’ve tried everything but nothing is swaying the cat from staying on ground level with the rest of the family. Try a hanging bed or swing. It may give your cat the illusion they are higher off the ground than they really are.

Couch Mats

Though a blanket may keep your couch clean from your dog’s dirty paws, without properly securing it, it’s only a matter of time before the blanket becomes askew and your couch is ruined. A couch cover that can be secured will work wonders in preventing or minimizing furniture damage.

Dog House

For the “outside” pet, try a dog house. It’s an ideal way for those that don’t want their dog in the home but want to keep them safe from the elements. The dog house can be as luxurious or basic as you please. Either way, your pup will appreciate some nice cool shade on a hot summer day.

Dog Beds

A more basic yet necessary item mentioned is a bed for your pet to call their own. Depending on the size of your pet, depends on how big of a bed to purchase for them. There are many different sizes and styles of pet beds, including the traditional bolstered bed, heated bed for those cold winter nights, and orthopedic bed for your more seasoned companion.

Background 

Elsie de Wolfe, born in New York, 1865, is considered the mother of interior design. Though there’s evidence that suggests interior design has been around for a long time, she is believed to be the inventor of the profession as a whole. De Wolfe’s journey began soon after her father passed away. A a result de Wolfe was forced to make a living for herself but didn’t know where to begin. Overwhelmed, she turned to her best friend and lover, Elisabeth (Bessy) Marbury. Elisabeth introduced de Wolfe into acting. Through acting, de Wolfe began set design and amateur costume design for the productions she was a part of.

Designer

Impressed with her outfit pairings, women outside of the theater began to copy her style in their everyday attire. With the momentum and unexpected success of de Wolfe’s set design and costume design, Marbury convinced her to get into interior design. After all, de Wolfe did design the interior of their home and visitors would always comment on how beautifully decorated their home was. Her reputation as a set designer and top-notch interior designer earned de Wolfe the commission for designing the interior of the Colony Club, New York’s first women’s social club.

Author

In addition to being an actress and interior designer, de Wolfe was an author. In 1913, she wrote what’s considered one of the most important pieces of literature regarding interior design titled The House in Good Taste. Being the book is over 100 years old and there may be portions that are outdated but her innovation in the interior design field cannot be denied. Readers inside and outside of the profession praise the book. The reviews praise the book as possessing and providing relevant design nuggets that work in today’s design world.

Three Main Principles

De Wolfe has three main principles when designing: simplicity, airiness, and visual unity. Let’s break the
principles down. Simplicity: be clear of about the vision for your home or a particular room you want to
design. Sometimes simple and plain is the best route in interior design. Airiness: Whether literally or
figuratively, your interior design should flow. You should be able to sit into any room and “breathe”.
Visual unity: Tying the other two principles together; your vision should be clear, simple, and have flow.
These are basic principles found in interior design today and doesn’t look like we’ll be getting rid of
them any time soon.

Is there any color in particular that makes you encourages happy in you? You know, a color that warms every bit of your soul. A color that puts you in a good mood? Well, yellow is one of those feel good colors. Ironically, yellow is the “it” color for spring this year. Yellow is reminiscent of the sun, both bright and shining and lights up any room.  Yellow is one of the primary colors that can be described as bold and full of energy or soft and calming (depending on the shade used). There are many ways to incorporate this fresh color into your home.

Flowers

Spring is the time of year when plants and flowers are in full bloom. For those seasonal allergy sufferers, you can still experience the beautiful floral arrangements by using faux yellow flowers instead of the real thing. Though you’ve ventured to your local HomeGoods to discover the high price of those fake sunflowers and tulips, don’t fret. There’s a faux arrangement that will fit any and every budget. Faux flowers aren’t limited to those arranged in vases. There’s three-dimensional wall art to display the flowers or hanging arrangements dangling from the ceiling. These arrangements also can be something other than floral. You can have the same spring effect by using fruit such as our good old citrus friend, the lemon. Faux or real, lemon arrangements are exactly what you need to add some vitamin D to your home.

Furniture

Furniture is another way to explore the yellow side. Some may think yellow furniture will cheapen a room but it’s quite the opposite. If done right, yellow furniture can brighten up your space. The main color used in said room determines the hue of yellow that should be used. If the room has darker tones, opt for a brighter yellow. For softer tones, use a pastel yellow to compliment. When we talk furniture, we’re not just referring to couches and chairs. Think tables, shelves, and other brightly colored yellow accent pieces.

Details

Despite what you may have been told, the smallest of detail is what helps a home or room stand out. When we re-decorate a certain part of our home, we tend to focus on the big picture and neglect the small details. Add yellow door knobs and trimming to that room. Swapping winter dishes for spring/summer dishes is an actual thing. Replace those deep ruby dishes for sunflower flower dishes and brighten up any meal. Appreciate the details in your home.

Accents

Ever seen a yellow toilet? It’s rare but a thing nonetheless. Why not be the first in your friend group to have one. If having a yellow porcelain throne is too bold for you, try yellow accessories in your bathroom. Whether it’s your shower curtain (are you a hook or hookless kind of person?). If you’re a hook curtain kind of person, the hooks can be a standard shape, yellow in color or jeweled. Incorporate other yellow pieces to your bathroom such as a rug/mat, toothbrush holder, and even paint the walls yellow.

There’s nothing worse than when you want to curl up with a book but dread turning on your blinding overhead lights so try a lamp instead. Lamps are an excellent source of light and a beautiful accessory for bedroom, living room and side table. They’re ideal for a soft illumination whilst reading a book or providing some light when you rather not be in the dark while watching a horror movie. Lamps come in various sizes and some are designed for the floor while others the table. Though the body of a lamp can be decorative, sometimes it’s the shade that is a real show stopper. See, the shade itself can be the statement piece of the lamp in place of the body.

Like the lamps themselves, lamp shades come in many different shapes, sizes and colors. Even so, the shades are broken into 5 basic shapes: bell, drum, oval, rectangle and square. Different materials and fabrics are used to crate lamp shades. One of the most popular is linen.

Bell

Bell lamp shades are described as, well being in the shape of a bell. A cone shaped shade is thrown into the bell category. This kind of shade is tapered at the top of the shade and widens as you move down it. These shades bring to mind femininity as they are reminiscent for the curve of a woman so these shades can used for a more feminine and chic touch. The shape of shades is beautiful when paired with hanging jewels, fringe or ruffles.

Drum

Like bell, drum lamp shades have a slight tapering at the top of the shape but not as drastic. There are also shades tapered in the middle while the top and base flair out (the top more than the base) like a goblet drum. Just be sure to remind the kids the lamp is for decoration and not to be played with.

Oval

Oval lamp shades are classic. They are described as both shallow in shape and sophisticated in taste. While gazing at the shade straight on, one may assume it’s rounded in shade so change the angle you’re looking at. One look from the side or top of the shade and you’ll discover its unique beauty. These shades are ideal for those who want a retro touch or for the modern and trendy. This shade gives a subtle edge without being too loud. Perfect for a room you want to give a unique yet contemporary feel to.

Rectangular

A pure contemporary lamp shade is the rectangular shade. The others mentioned above are rounded, given the shades a softer look. Rectangular shades are anything but soft. These shades are perfect for accenting clean lines and crisp precision and finish. This shade is sure to stand out among all the other curvy pieces in the room.

Square

This will probably be the only time in your life where being square is okay and celebrated. Like the rectangular shade, square shades refresh a room with its bold edges. Square shade proves to be fun and fashionable.

Now that we’re in the last year of the 2010s, I’ve been thinking back on all of the trends in the 90s and early 2000s. There are trends in both decades that have stood the test of time and/or made its way back into the mainstream. Though most of these home decor trends should be left in the 90s/early 2000s like low waisted jeans, some are so fun that it’s hard to not want to incorporate into your home today.

Bamboo Anyone?

One thing is for sure, they (they as are those that create furniture) don’t make furniture like used to. And if you happen upon furniture of good quality, said furniture is super expensive and sometimes still not the top-notch quality from back in the day. Wicker, rattan, and even bamboo furniture is lightweight, transcends the any decade, and worth some coin (if you wanted to resale those pieces).

Statement Curtains

Doorway curtains allow your quirkiness to shine. There’s no need to stick to traditional fabric curtains. Like in the 90s/2000s, these curtains can be beaded which make a “beautiful” sound every time you enter a room or closet. Beaded curtains can be made of wood, bamboo, or plastic molded in various shapes. You can keep the beading colors soft or opt for those that glow in the dark.

Primary Colors for the Win

If you skipped Art 101 in college, allow me learn you something. The primary colors are red, blue and yellow. Combined, these colors create other colors such as green, orange and purple. Said colors happen to be the secondary colors. The 90s/early 2000s were defined by bold colors. But these colors aren’t stuck in a time capsule. Primary colors are an excellent accent wall or accent pieces in any room.

Fringe Benefits

Fringe is one of those trends that can be associated with any time period and with any room in your home. Whether it’s a lamp shade, base of a couch, or curtain. Fringe is one of those interior design ideas that hasn’t gone away and won’t anytime soon.

Fluff and Floral

Remember the time of furry and fluffy everything? From furry pens to notebooks to even cord phones (am I showing my age?!) So much fluff everywhere. After decades, fluffy accessories are still around and very much so thriving. Throwing a furry pillow on your couch or bed will add a touch of texture. Floral prints will outlive all of us. Florals are perfect for any season between spring and winter. Florals can be anywhere in your home and on any surface, you can think of. There was a time where floral walls were paired with floral couches. Let’s not overdo it in this decade. An accent wall with floral wallpaper is acceptable or cover a side table with a beautiful floral arrangement.

Even if you’re not into astrology, reading about your sign can be a fun thing to do whilst drinking wine with the girls. Let’s start with the first astrological sign: Aries. Aries, represented by the ram, run from March 21-April 19th. The Aries is a fire sign full of courage, enthusiasm, and confidence. While the Aries possess plenty of good qualities, they have a few imperfections as well. An Aries can be described as impulsive, impatient and moody. An Aries also has duality. For example, in spite of an Aries bold, flashy, and energetic nature, they appreciate quiet and simplicity in the space they’re in. As previously discussed, an Aries definitely appreciates the simple things in life but they also enjoy flaunting and borderline gaudy from time to time. Don’t deny it Aries that’s reading this. Bold statement pieces is something that will grab an Aries attention. Think an extravagant art piece hung on the wall, an obnoxiously huge gold statue in the corner of a room, or a piece with plenty of bling. Aries are trailblazers and trendsetters. They tend to become bored with monotony and the ordinary. An Aries is constantly seeking the next big “it” thing. By the time everyone else has caught up to the previous trend, an Aries has already moved on. Their impulsive nature will urge them to change their home decor and wall colors before the paint has an opportunity to dry.

Fire

So, we now know that an Aries is a fire sign. Fire produces warmth, which is something an Aries thrives off of. Warmth refers to both literal and figurative warm. A fireplace, candles and plush blankets are entities that will provide an Aries with the desired warmth. Items that encourage an inner warmth will be found around an Aries home. Though full of fire, an Aries can appreciate pieces that are reminiscent to water. These water elements are anything from glass tables to any décor piece with silver in it.

Not too long ago, I went to a baby shower of one of my dearest and closest friends. We celebrated the impending arrival of her first child, a precious baby girl. The tables were covered with in feminine powder pink and glittery gold tablecloths with heart and star shaped gold and hot pink confetti beautifully scattered across each table. Gold and pink balloons everywhere and a pretty gold photo station with a banner reading “It’s A Girl” draping over it. And we can’t forget the treat table full of powder pink and gold goodies. Though the smells of the baby shower menu staples of fried chicken and meatballs filled the air, it didn’t compare to the love that touched the parents-to-be.  

Celebrating a new baby is a joyous and emotional occasion. While the mom and dad-to-be opened their 100+ gifts, it seemed that every other outfit they received were pink, pink and more pink. A guest made the comment that “girls can wear more than just pink” and she’s right. Here are some ideas for your new baby’s nursery beyond the typical pink (typically associated with girls) and blue (typically associated with boys). Get a little creative for your new bundle of joy when it comes to their nursery decor.

It’s bittersweet that February has come to an end and in deep hibernating until next winter.  On the plus side, we see the bright and shining light at the end of winter’s tunnel. For most, all of our attention has shifted from Valentine’s Day to spring and imminent warm weather.  Fortunately for the lovers of love out there, love is forever in the air. Candles are an excellent source of light. They are used in varies settings such as nice romantic dinner, whilst soaking in the tub after a long day, or when you’re waiting for the electricity to cut on because finally paid the bill. Either way, candles set a mood.  They encourage relaxation and symbolize love, hope, and warmth. Yes, interior design is about the look, feel and flow of a space, but what about the smell of the space? Try scented candles lavender for tranquility and a good night’s sleep. Or vanilla. It’s sweet, calming scent is said to act as an aphrodisiac. Do what you want with that information.

Whether you recognize it or not, colors have a way of swaying your mood and can provoke emotion.
