Marina Rubin was born in the small town of Vinnitsa, Ukraine, in the former Soviet Union. Her family immigrated to United States in 1989 seeking asylum. Her first chapbook Ode to Hotels (2002) was followed by Once (2004) and Logic (2007). Her work had appeared in over seventy magazines and anthologies including 13th Warrior Review, Asheville Poetry Review, Dos Passos Review, 5AM, Nano Fiction, Coal City, Green Hills Literary Lantern, Jewish Currents, Lillith, Pearl, Poet Lore, Skidrow Penthouse, The Portland Review, The Worcester Review and many more. She is an associate editor of Mudfish, the Tribeca literary and art magazine. Her work was nominated for the Pushcart Prize in 2007 and again in 2012. She is a 2013 recipient of the COJECO Blueprint Fellowship. Her fourth book, a collection of flash fiction stories Stealing Cherries was released in October 2013 from Manic D Press and is available on Amazon, B&N and other booksellers nationwide.

POTPOURRI (from Stealing Cherries)
we heard about the beach on the other side of the resort, the sign prohibiting all photographs, the mandate to remove clothing at the gate within thirty seconds, or leave immediately. the nudists, we were not like those people, polite and proper we stayed on the prude beach in our bathing suits, discussing politics and the importance of potpourri. by sundown we knew that there would always be just the two of us on this deserted island, as if in the aftermath of a catastrophe, we were the only remaining humans. somewhere out there, hundreds and hundreds of people sporting nothing but sunscreen, sunglasses, sombreros played volleyball, water badminton, ping pong in pairs, legs, arms, balls, breasts, some silicon, some drooping, swinging in a liberated dance of limbs, a return to ancestral truths. we spat on our principles, we embraced those people, we became those people, for the next eight days we wore nakedness, like a luxurious Burberry coat. when it was over, stranded at the Montego Bay airport it pinched our eyes to see all those fully dressed people, and every inseam, every cross-stitch felt like a cut of a blade, fabric, like sandpaper

THE LEFT LEG (from Logic)
on the stone steps
behind the seaport
where three bridges
converged into one,
he pulled my left leg
in a big black boot
over his knee & said
that he doesn’t care
for poetry, bagels or
scallions, or the rain
in Boston where he wasn’t tonight, or the twelve million years
that needed to be understood in order to understand a minute,
but why would one need a minute when he could have twelve
million years, that none of it ever mattered, he only loved
this left leg in this big black boot

They (from Ode to Hotels)
In every can of fruit cocktail with diced apricots, pears and pineapples, bows of apples and nets of gooseberries soaked in sweet sauce, there is always that one plump crimson cherry with an unexpected robust bone inside, forgotten, frightened, frantic, foolishly in love.

In the late 1980’s, on the brink of the collapse of the Soviet Union, tens of thousands of Soviet Jews were finally allowed to leave the USSR. What these people did not expect was that their final destination, America, no longer welcomed them with open arms. In 1988, American policy suddenly changed and thousands of Soviet Jews were stranded in Italy. Stateless.
This documentary captures that unique slice of history from the point of view of the émigrés as well as expert accounts of the situation from influential Jewish leaders including David Harris of the AJC, Mark Handelman of NYANA and Mark Hetfield of HIAS among others.
Stay after the screening for a panel discussion with the filmmaker as well as Mark Hetfield, Mark Handelman and others!
Stay even longer and enjoy a reception with wine and hors d’oeuvres.
RJeneration partners with the Jewish Art Salon to invite you to “Finding Home: “Parallels in mythology from around the world”. An event for you as the writer and teller of your own life story.
This lecture and workshop will bridge world mythologies to individual stories. Presenter: Siona Benjamin, a painter from Bombay, living in the US connects mythology to personal stories in a sensitive and though provoking way. Her work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim India.
Siona will compare mythological stories like the Indian Matsya , Jonah and the fish ,Noah’s Ark , Aleksandr Pushkin’s “The tale of the fisherman” , Gilgamesh , a Babylonian myth from 2000 BC. We will discuss the science/geology of the “flood” or massive change. Participants will bring ideas and objects from home that speak of their family, culture, religion, identity, transformations. In a facilitated journey, participants will connect the parallels in mythologies of the world with their own personal stories.
6:00 – 6:30 PM – Light buffet dinner 6:30 – 8:30 PM – Program
Presenter:
Siona Benjamin is a painter from Bombay, now living in the US. Her work reflects her background of being brought up Jewish in a predominantly Hindu and Muslim India. In her paintings she combines the imagery of her past with the role she plays in America today, making a mosaic inspired by both Indian miniature paintings and Sephardic icons. She has been recently awarded a Fulbright Fellowship for an art project titled: Faces: Weaving Indian Jewish Narratives. Her NY solo exhibit will open March 6 at the Flomenhaft Gallery.
This programs are sponsored by Center Without Walls, a project of COJECO, funded by the UJA-Federation of NY and Genesis Philanthropy Group. Co-sponsored by the Tribeca Synagogue for the Arts.

Moving between offbeat experimental works and more mainstream, but equally personal, genre films, Balabanov—already a cult sensation in Russia—is ripe for discovery. All films directed by Aleksei Balabanov.
