By Barb Krebs, for York Daily Record/Sunday News:

It's quite a place to play.

Thirteen and a half acres. Fenced play areas. Free water. Everyone plays with others their size.

And it's all for the dogs.

Saturday will be the grand opening of Canine Meadows, a dog park at John C. Rudy County Park. It is the first of its kind in the area and allows dogs to play without being leashed.

The Central Pennsylvania Animal Alliance will host Woofstock, a groovy festival for people and their animals, on Sunday, September 28, beginning at 10 am on City Island. Local and national celebrities will be on hand to "roll out the red rover carpet" for the festivities.

At 10 am, the "tuff guys" from New York City's Rescue Ink will lead The Grateful Dog Walk beginning on City Island and continuing across the Walnut Street Bridge to Riverfront Park. Woofstock will kick off promptly at 11 am at Riverfront Park with Bob Rudy from 98.5 The Peak emceeing this event featuring over 125 animal friendly vendors, bands, food, and contests. People and their animals can meet Jon Bannon from Animal Planet's "The Groomer Has It" throughout the day. Valerie Pritchett from ABC 27 News will host the Adoptables Rockin' Mutt Strut Pet Parade at high noon at Kunkle Plaza. At 3 pm, Diane Grey from MIX 106.7 will emcee The Funkytown Pet Costume Contest with Judges Jen Shade, Rescue Ink, and Sara Bozich from The Patriot News picking the best entries from several costume categories.

From Associated Press:

A bill designed to dramatically improve conditions for dogs kept in Pennsylvania's larger commercial kennels passed the state House of Representatives on Wednesday and was sent to the Senate.

The House voted 181-17 in favor of new regulations that would increase the size of cages, require annual veterinary checkups and crack down on what critics describe as inhumane puppy mills.

Seeking a 'mom' cat to nurse newborn kittens

Two newborn kittens (approximately 24 hours old) were found in York, PA, and the woman who found them is hoping to find a mother cat who's currently nursing to care for them.

If you can help, please call Barbara at (717) 855-6630 or e-mail crafty@825@hotmail.com.

Barbara said she'd be willing to take the kittens back after they're older and stronger, to find them good homes; but she's afraid they won't survive without a "mom" cat right now.
