this market. Relativly, the mobile VoIP, which can be used on cell
phone, is still a new market. To attract more customers, the most
frequently used trick of such kind new companies is free trial. Morodo
is a new mobile VoIP companies that offering free trail to attract
customers.

Morodo is offering 3 GBP credit to new customers for free trial. The
rate of this VoIP service provider to call China is 1.5 pence per
minutes, in this sense 3 GBP equals to 200 miniutes of free trial. The
procedure of registration is very simple, only an email address and a
phone number. In fact, the phone number is the most important, because
Modoro identifies customers via the phone number. Morodo doesn’t
require to verify the phone number filled during registration as the
call needs to be initialed from the registered number. Though there is
webcall option on Morodo’s website, at least the option is not valid
for free trial users now.

To use Morodo, a small Java application needs to be installed on
handset that supporting J2ME. Run it after installation, the term of
service will be displayed as below:

Click “Make a call” and then you can fill in “Make a call to” to
make call with MO-Call. But please note that, with this method, your
mobile phone will dial a fixed line number in London automatically as
Morodo only has access number in Great Britain. According the number of
the phone, from which the call is initialed, Morodo can determine the
corresponding user information such as the remaining balance and so on,
and then route the call to the international number the user wants to
call. Thus the original target market of Morodo is customers that have
free minutes plan.

Then does it mean that customers in other regions cannot use the
service of Morodo. Of course not, beause Morodo also offers callback
method other than access number. Select “Your Account”, then select
“Network settings”, then modify “Current Service” to “Roaming”, and you
can use the VoIP service from Morodo outside Great Britain now.

Select “Make a call” in the method, “Make a call to”, “Receive this
call at” and “If you want to the talk time…” 3 input fields will appear.

Select “MO-Call” now, you mobile phone will automaticlly send a SMS
of “destination number T call length @ source number” format to
Morodo’s SMS center, then Morodo will make calls to source number and
destination number respectively then connect these two calls. Compare
to access number method, callback method has extra cost of the SMS to
Great Britain and the rate is the summary to these two numbers.
Consequently, 3 GBP will only last for 100 minutes. This method is
suitable for customers in Great Britain and customers that can send
cheap international SMS (for example, who is using T-Mobile and
LycaMobile). Maybe by using applications from Betamax that also can
trigger the callback service.

reciever has to pay the cost. Because of testing period, Jaxtr offers
each new registered user has 100 free minutes to recieve incoming calls
per month.

You can’t make a free call directly, but if your friends have had
Jaxtr accounts you can make free calls to them. One of the most
complicated things is that you can’t directly use this free call yet.
During registering, you have to input the recieving phone number and
Jaxtr will create the your own Jaxtr’s link. Therefore if your friend
clicks the link of your Jaxtr he/she will be asked to input the phone
number from which the call will be made and Jaxtr will assign a local
number. For example your friend inputs an chinese phone number,Jaxtr
will assign a Chinese local phone number(Jaxtr is testing the Chinese
access number). When your friend use the phone, which has been
registered at Jaxtr, to call this special local number, you will
recieve this call via forewarding. Because Jaxtr has saved all
information at the first connection between you and your friend, from
now on your friend just need to call you using the same access phone
number from his/her phone. It’s quite cheap, actually the reciever
needs to pay the cost of local phone.

To my mind, Jaxtr is the free Voip service because I use other Voip
services that can make a free call to European countries or US but are
not free for China. Therefore, I only need to dial the local phone
number(European phone number) that is created by Jaxtr, but the call
actually has been forwarded to Chinese phone. This process is the same
as the forwarding number of Jajah.

Jaxtr gives you additional talk time for each user you invite and
he/she signs up. Earn 10 free minutes for each new jaxtr user you sign
up.

Except first time using call back via Jaxtr, you need to dial the
virtual number. The system access you to the real destination number.

For example, you live in America, your number is 1-234-567-8900. Your friend is in China and phone number is 86-21-87654321. After your friend has registed his number, there is a connection such as www.jaxtr.com/FriendInChina.

When you first time click this link, you need to input your phone number1-234-567-8900, Jaxtr call back to this number and connect to your friend number.

But Jaxtr generates a local virtual number1-234-876-5432.
From now on you have to dial this virtual number via your home phone,
your friend also can receive the call. You need to pay the local
calling rate but free for the international call.

Many network phone work by this way, such as Call In mode of
Talkster company, EQO, GlobeDialer and Nimbuzz(I just success to dial
from a phone to a computer). Furthermore Jangl seems that it clones
from Jaxtr. But all of these companies do not provide the virtual
access number of China.

If you’d like to use them in China, I can give your some useful
suggestion. Nomally I make a call via VoIPDiscount such kind of things,
which can pretend to call from Amercia. The best of that, It is free.

And Raketu
also started to provide “free” phone 2 phone VoIP service, which can be
considered as a direct competitor of Jajah and Nonoh. Although there
are still quite some “free” VoIP services as well as phone to phone
VoIP providers, it is hard to find more VoIP produtes that offer
remarkable “free” minutes like and also support phone 2 phone web
callback feature like Jajah, Nonoh and Raketu.

Jajah

Jajah can be consider an “old” company is the fast changing VoIP
market and the lead of the web callback VoIP service. The web callback
method itself is a smart trick to bypass the bottle neck of requirement
for band width and the handset hardware, but without the “free” minutes
offer, Jajah could attract so many users and so much attention.

How Jajah works has been well known: Every user can register 3 phone
number and can only make calls from these 3 numbers. Moreoever,
registereds number normally cannot be registered under other account
without contacting Jajah support. Changing registered numbers is also
difficult. Users use Jajah service recently (it seemed to be 2 weeks in
the past) are called active users. If both parties of a call are active
users with some credit (Jajah offer a little amount free credit to new
users as trial) on their account and both of them are in free zone
(Free zones of Jajah, Nonoh and Raketu are more or less the same, which
include fixed lines in West Europe, fixed lines plus mobile phones in
North America, China and so on), the call will be free. The free
minutes in West EU and North America is 150 per month and 500 per week.
But in China (as long as there has been a Chinese number registered
under the account) it is 15 per week and 50 per month.

If somebody want to use Jajah on a mobile phone, except making calls
via web callback, a small Java application can be installed to make
calls. As the normal Jajah web page to make calls uses Java script, it
cannot be display correctly on most mobile browsers of. Thus, Jajah
provides the WAP version mobile.jajah.com
to make calls. But according to my experience, calls made from
mobile.jajah.com always is not free. I guess it will be the same for
calls made from the Java dialing application. It seems that Jajah will
redirect all mobile browsers (such as Opera Mobile and Opera Mini) to the WAP page. When free minutes are used up, the rate to China is 3.1 euro cents per minute.

Jajah also can be used to send SMS, the rate to China is 5 euro
cents per 160 letters. It could not support unicode in the past, I have
no idea whether it is improved now. According to my personal view, the
sound quality of Jajah is quite good, sometime you have to try more
than once before the call is connected.

Nonoh

Betamax is also a famous name on the VoIP market. Though Betamax
doesn’t have its name on media as frequently as Jajah, but it is well
known by customers for its more than 20 different daughter companies
and the number is still increasing. Most Betamax products support web
callback feature, but only Nonoh is dedicated for phone 2 phone method
and doesn’t need connection fee.

Nonoh doesn’t have any limitation for phone numbers of call parties,
which is a big advantage over Jajah. When users put 10 euro credit on
their account, they can enjoy 60 per call, 300 per week and 1000 per
month free minutes in following 120 days. After 120 days, normal rate
will be applied.

Nonoh have neither a Java dialing client on mobile phones nor a WAP
version page, thus it will be difficult to make calls from many
handsets. I am using Opera Mini to make calls from the WWW page. As
Opera Mini works with proxy (cache server), there can be potential
security issue for user name and passpword.

Nonoh also can be used to send SMS and it free for many destinations. My experience is that the sound quality of Nonoh is as good as Jajah and so are other aspects.

Raketu

Raketu is a relatively new company and it seems to have Czech
background according to its name (I heard that Raketu means Rocket in
Czech).

The “free” policy of Raketu is that customers can enjoy 1200 free
minutes per months in 90 days after recharging with at least 10 USD.
But please notice that, the 1200 minutes is calculated based on PC 2
phone method. So it is only 600 minutes for phone 2 phone method. After
free minutes being used up, the phone 2 phone rate between Chinese
number is 0.0328 USD per minute.

Raketu also doesn’t have limitation for phone numbers of call
parties. It doesn’t have a Java dialing client on mobile phones, but
there is a WAP version of dialing page of Raketu.

The rate of Raketu to send SMS to China is 0.088 USD. The voice
quality of Raketu seems to be worse than Jajah and Nonoh. It is also
more difficult to get connected with Raketu comparing with Jajah and
Nonoh.

For free minutes, Nonoh is the best, Raketu is the second，Jajah is
the last。But Nonoh and Raketu require customers buy 10 Euro/USD credit
to get free minutes in following 120 or 90 days. And Jajah only
requires calling parties are active users to have free minutes every
month and there is no or less requirement for purchasing credit in
advance. So for customers with fixed call destinations, Jajah is the
cheapest choice.

Personallly I feel Nonoh is the most flexible one and 10 euro (11.9
euro with VAT) to have 4000 minutes in total is a good deal. The only
problem is the bad reputation of Betamax’s service, so enjoy it when it
is as now

For dialing, Jajah is the most convenient one, Raketu is the second
and Nonoh is the last. But it is not free to make calls from mobile
phones with Jajah, then Raketu is the best from this point of view.
Jajah and Nonoh have more or less the same level of sound quality, and
Raketu is not so good. Obvious, Nonoh is the best to send SMS.

MicroReader has powerful features, for example the text file viewerand the editor even writing diary, but it is only developed for Siemensmobile phones. More and more people use a mobile phone as an e-bookreader. Although there are not many softwares that combine viewer andeditor together as MicroReader, there are numerous choices of a generalreader . Considering the compatibility of platforms, I prefer thereader developed by java. The moonlight blog discussed the top 5 bestsoftwares for mobile phones several weeks ago and mentioned Moto-TXT,which is an free e-book reader. You guessed it right from its name. Atthe beginning it focused on Motos phones, but now it can be used onmany brands mobile phones. My mobile phone is Moto E680i, but I havenever heard of this software before. So I compare the Moto-TXT with myfavorite free e-book reader Anyview.

the top level menu of the Moto-TXT e-book reader is displayed asabove. You can use the right and left key to nevigate among differentlevels of menu, and the up and down key to nevigate in the same level.

Moto-TXT e-book reader can have some file system operations, such asdelete and rename. Moto-TXT can open plain text files and some types ofpictures(JPG and PNG, except BMP, but if the file size is too large theoperation will be refused). The speed is quite fast.

In my opinion, Moto-TXT e-book reader just provides the basicfunctions, but the final effect is nice. The size of this Moto-TXTinstalled is about 200k. Because it is not certificated software, youneed to enable the read/write manually. Unfortunately, there isn’t anEnglish Version available yet.

My favorite e-book reader is Anyview. At the beginning it justfocused on Moto E680. But Anyview 3.0 can support many different brandsof mobile phones. I install the latest version of Anyiew e-book readerinto Nokia N73 and Siemens CX65, it can work on N73 but I need to keepconfirming to access the file. Maybe I missed one of steps duringinstall. Because I enabled the read/write permission manually on E680iat the first time, there is no annoying alert any more. It can not workon CX65. I guess the reason is Siemens mobile phone itself not Anyview.

Anyview e-book reader allows you to setup the interface languageamong simple Chinese, traditional Chinese, English and Russian. Itprovides more file system operations than Moto-TXT e-book reader, suchas file managemant, copy/paste and extraction.

The original motivation of Anyview e-book reader was to provide morepretty font. The following picture displays the difference between thebuilt-in font and the system default font. Although the bulit-in fontlooks better, you need more than 500k memory to install it.

Except supporting plain text, Anyview e-book reader also supportsUMD format of Nokia’s Symbian system, HTML, PDB format of Palm system.

Anyview e-book reader also can open ZIP file to display the content directly.

Anyview e-book reader supports some types of pictures such as JPG,PNG and so on. Comparing with Moto-TXT, the speed of opening picture ismuch slower than former. The advantage is that you can zoom out thesize of picture to adapt the screen. The author supposed to send thepicture by MMS, but this option is invalid in my E680i.

It seems that Anyview is getting closer to the author’s ambition —make the best e-book reader on Java mobile phones (the Author eveninvented a file format called IAV to support documents of mixed textand images on mobile phones. Unfortunately, few people are insterestedto make documents in IAV format). However, as the lastest Anyviewe-book reader is still beta vesion, it has some stability issue. Theapplication may hung up during some operations. For people who caremore about stability, it may be better to use old 0.3 version.

Anyhow, except only suppot Moto E680/A780 mobile phones, the 0.3version Anyview e-book reader doesn’t support file formats like UMDvery well and it needs more than 300k to install.

The Anyview 0.3 can send a captured section of a text file via msg,but this function disappears from the version 3.0. call. Many network operators provide VoIP sevices as the part of
Package, such as Telenet, Tele2 in Belgium, they all have VoIP
services. Of course there are independent VoIP providers like
3satrsnet. These VoIP services are regarded as alternatives of the
traditional phone. Not only can these Voip services make a cheap local
or international call, but also they include the normal landline
number, which can recieve incoming calls. At the beginning most people
think VoIP is a supplement so they wouldn’t want to pay the one year
calling credit in advance. Because Sunrocket bankrupted suddenly,
people are consevative for complete migration to Voip. Although some of
Voip providers offer the incoming phone number such as Stanaphone,
Globe7 and Gizmo, they have some restriction or have to pay(such as
Skype In). I’ve been using VoipDiscount etc. for a long time, so I
don’t want to change the provider only for getting an incoming number.

Actually, IPKall has been providing an free vitual phone number
since a few years ago and this phone number can band with other Voip
services which support SIP. For example here is how to bind VoIPDiscount with the vitual phone number.

1) Goto IPKall

2) Click Sign-Up and input the VoIPDiscount account username and so on.

3) Click submit.

After several hours, you can recieve email including the vitual
phone number from IPKall, then you can use this phone number receive a
call. If the binded SIP account is not online, your friend’s voice mail
will be sent to your email. The main restriction is IPKall only
provides the vitual number coming from 206, 253, 360 and 425 American
area code.

Except IpKall, I also apply the Belgium vitual number provided by
3starsnet. To get this number for free, you need to buy 10 euro calling
credit and it will expire till next year.

past the few days? We also don’t want to keep every waiting. Because
this e-book reader is just migrated to BlackBerry platform, there was
something to be rewritten. However, after these two days’ effort, the
blackberry version of Anyview e-book reader is ready now.

As usual, there are some screen shots and simple instructions:

Due to some reasons, we required registration for anyview e-book
reader. However, the registration is totally free. You only need to
input the machine code and your email address on the web address we
provide, the activation code will be sent to you automatically. There
are two things to be noticed: first, your email address and machine
code must be correct; second, wait a while after submission till you
are told that the email is correctly sent. Then you can check your
email box. If there is no email received, please check spam emails, it
may be treat as a spam email by some systems.

Operation: Q -> left soft key, P
-> right soft key, U N H K -> up down left right, confirm ->
enter or Q, exit -> ESC

System Path Setting:

After inputing the activation code,
you can use the Anyview e-book reader (of course, the activation code
only needs to be input once). I suggest everybody should read help
first.

Before using Anyview e-book reader, we’d better set system path
as it is necessary to use external fonts!!! Oh, there is one thing to
be noticed that Anyview e-book reader only support OS above 4.2 at this
moment. Why? I guess it can be explained by a simple reason: DM media
manager is needed to import e-book and it is not support by OS 4.1.

You will see the option to set system
path when you start Anyview e-book reader. You’d better do so, as to
use external fonts, there needs to be a new font folder in the system
path to put fonts in. It depends on you no matter where you want to put
it. You can make a new e-books directory for Anyview reader or use
existing directories for picture and ringtone. After setting system
path, make a font folder in it, which is used to put external ***.font
files. If you want to make it simple, just choose AutoSetup and Anyview
e-book reader will set it for you. You just need to remember it. It
doesn’t matter if you forget it as you can change it later in the
software.

Change Font Size:

After setting system path, we can
enjoy Anyview e-book now. Press the left soft key (Q) to pop up the
menu and choose open then you can select the e-book you want to read.
It will be opened after being selected as below:

In the page, the wheel also works. The
keyboard works too. Press Q to pop up the menu, then choose “others”
-> “font” and you can change the font size here. (The current
edition removed the built-in font, so you’d better don’t do that to
avoid error.)

Use External Font:

In the start page of Anyview e-book reader, press Q to pop up
the menu, choose “Setup” -> “Preference”, then press Q again to call
the menu, then choose “Edit”. Here you can tune according to your own
requirement. You can load your external font directly.

You can try the effect of different settings. Enjoy it.

from Morange on my handset, my friend was very interested in the
features of Morange. I told him that Morange is the one of most useful
applications on my handset. After appreciating features such as the
push mail, instant messaging and RSS, I added one more comment that if
Morange could have VoIP integrated it would even greater.

Last night I visited the home page of Morange to see whether there
was any update and found that the latest version of Morange already had
VoIP feature integrated
And like all new VoIP service providers, Morange now is offering 1 USD
credit for free trial to all new subsribers of MoTalk - its new VoIP
service

Now let’s have a look on how to use MoTalk - the new VoIP service.

(1) First download suitable version (J2ME and Windows Mobile version) for you handset from Morange’s website.

(2) When Morange is running for the first time, the application will
detect the network connection (WAP or Internet) and then users are
prompted to registrate or login.

(3) Fill in username, password and mobile number to registrate

(4) Login after registration and I noticed that only English version
have MoTalk option, which is between two instant messaging options

(5) The dialer UI of MoTalk is as below:

(6) Though the remaining balance on UI was shown as 0, but after
filling the destination number and clicking the green “call” buttom,
the call was connected and it was prompted that the remaining calling
time was 28 minutes. But I didn’t really test the audio quality.

This VoIP service is implemented via callback method and GPRS or 3G
connection is needed to trigger the call. The call is established
between the registered number and the number filled in the dialer UI.
If there is somebody interested in it, please try it and there may be
more possibilities.

Add Comment

had to have the contract with the operator. I paid the bill every month
therefore I had free time to call and also could send free SMS. However
at that time I didn’t need to send the free text message at all until I
met my wife. Everyday I needed to send numbers of messages, especially
they were the international SMS. So I kept looking for some softwares
or websites that could send free text messages. Nowadays I have
collected lots of information. I think they will be worth sharing with
others.

First www.txtbe.com is a nice choice. You just need to register with
an email address. At the beginning you could send 5 free SMS everyday
but now the amount is decreased to 2 free SMS everyday. But if you
register many accounts via different emails you can get enough free
text messages. Also free text messages can be accumulated, for example,
if you haven’t sent messages for 4 days, you have 8 free SMS today. Of
course the accumulation has the limitation (maximum 15 free text
message). The length of the text message is 160 ASCII characters or 70
Unicode characters, in fact the last 2 characters won’t display
correctly, so you’d better control the length of each free SMS under
156 ASCII or 68 Unicode.

Every time you send a text message to new receiver, you need
additional information, such as IP, the account of the sender, and so
on. The receiver can reply “BLOCK” to stop the SMS from this receiver.
As a sender, you have to input the confirm code every time to prevent
spam message.

The receiver can reply this message directly and the sender can
receive it from his registered email. But the function can not work
very well depending on where the receiver is living.

There are other disadvantages. 1) It cannot support all countries,
for example Netherlands. 2) There can be failure to send SMS, repeating
the same SMS several times or sending the SMS to stranger’s mobile
phone. But I believe this kind of system bugs will be less and less.

www.txtbe.com has the limit of
countries. For example, you cannot send a free text message to
Netherlands. But there is another way to send free text messages that
is through the famous www.twitter.com.
The basic function of Twitter is to exchange the information among
numbers of people. But there are various ways to extend its functions.
For example, you can send the free SMS via the Direct Message. But the
receiver has to register, verify his mobile number and add the sender
to be his friend. Of course Twitter can be easily registered by Email,
mobile phone and others softwares of instant messaging. Now lets see
how we can send the free text message.

Obviously we need an account of Twitter. If we want to send a
message to MyFrined1, there are in fact several different ways to
achieve this. First the easiest way, 1) Go to the Twitter page 2)
select “Send MyFriend1 a message” 3) write the content of the message.
Second you can send “D MyFriends1 Content” from your mobile phone to +447624801423. Third , log into the softwares of instant messaging, then send the message to twitter@twitter.com.
Pay attention to that the length of the message has to be controlled
under 140 ASCII characters or 60 Unicode characters. Now it can also
support the Chinese character.

Though the users of T-mobile or Lycamobile can send the
international message as cheap as the local one, the Chinese mobile
phones almost cannot receive it. So if you choose the Twitter, your
friend can receive your free text messages wherever he has been living.
Another thing should be mentioned, Twitter has the version of WAP.
Considering the 3G is becoming more and more popular, this feature is
quite useful.

business, but few have dreams as grand as that of Joseph Chen, CEO of the Oak
Pacific Group.

Over the past two years, companies aiming
to become the "next big thing" like to define itself as "the
next MySpace", "the next YouTube", "the next Facebook"
or "the next Craigslist". Through the development and acquisition of
a series of websites, Chen's company can perhaps be described as "the next
Myspace + YouTube + Facebook + Craigslist". In other words, Chen has
combined many of the success stories of Web 2.0 with the view of securing an
IPO.

As one of the pioneers of the Chinese
internet industry and arguably the first to derive commercial value from an
online community, Chen should be well equipped to digest this "bowl of
spaghetti" of an idea. Even though Chinaren did not successfully complete
an IPO, Chen accumulate enough wealth, experience and relationship from this
venture to secure two rounds of funding totaling USD$58m. Over the past 10
years, no other internet business was able to secure funding of such size. In
addition, venture capitalists estimate that Chen's wireless value-added service
provider will achieve income of $15m by end of 2007. Such financial
performance, together with the market's generosity in its valuation of web 2.0
companies, means that an IPO should not prove to be overly difficult.

However, as the market subsequently
witnessed, its IPO plans turned out to be a "variation without a
theme".

Oak Pacific announced its intention to
seek an IPO in August, 2005. The high profile announcement became the
foundation of its subsequent hiring spree. 6 months later, Chen's pronouncement
that he "has not thought through the reasoning behind an IPO" could hardly
conceal his appetite for a major IPO, as illustrated by the introduction of the
Facebook-clone 5Q.com, and a Craigslist-inspired redesign of Renren.com.

Regardless of whether Chen really did
think through the reasoning behind an IPO, he was forced to rethink after China
Mobile decided in June 2007 to change its wireless value-added service
strategy. Even though Oak Pacific announced that its revenue reached RMB80m,
insiders suggest that the change in strategy reduced the company's revenue from
wireless value-added services by two-thirds. This also led directly to the
sudden retrenchment of staff in September 2006.

If one is to describe March 2006, when Oak
Pacific received a second round of funding of $48m, as the company's first
turning point, the retrenchment program could be considered as its second
turning point. At the time of the retrenchment, Chen sent an open letter to all
staff as a show of confidence, and released a statement on his IT online
community Donews suggesting that he would create 3 more listed companies in the
next 3 years. Few expected that two more rounds of retrenchment would follow in
the next 5 months. It was reported that after the second retrenchment round,
Chen, over a one week period, lunched with executives across all departments to
reassure them that the company's growth and development plans are still
progressing positively. After the third round of retrenchments, Chen was no
longer talking to his staff. In addition, apart from a few small gathering at
the department level, no enterprise-wide activities were organised to mark
Chinese New Year 2007.

Even in February 2007, Chen was defiant.
"We can list right away if we must. However, we would prefer to bide time
and wait for the right opportunity as our ultimate aim is to become a highly
valuable public company." By this time, few in the industry believe Chen.

In an interview conducted at Chen's
office on March 23rd, Chen asked Global Entrepreneur, "You tell me, how
should I respond to questions on our IPO plans?". In his view, his
penchant for speculation is not the issue, but rather media and industry
interest in the prospects of Oak Pacific as a listed company. However, this
does not mean that this medium built Hubei
man with broad, big jaws was about to admit that his company is in trouble.

"I'm pretty happy with where we are
at, and I am quietly pleased with our outlook." Chen said. "I am not
concerned about the speculation surrounding my company. Let those who wish to
comment speak their mind. If you are trying to tell me that others cannot
understand why I do what I do, then so be it. This makes me happy as it shows
that others cannot comprehend my strategy. You do realise, I am sure, that I am
not one to seek confrontation". He would only concede that he "should
not have shown aggression in such a high profile manner".

Whether one takes Chen's pronouncements
as show of confidence or bravado, it is well worth putting Oak Pacific's trials
and tribulations over the past year under the microscope. Gemag.com contacted
more than a dozen staff, investor, competitor and industry analyst for this
story and most indicated that they learned much from Oak Pacific's experiences.
An entrepreneur, currently in his second start-up, told us that he realised
from observing Oak Pacific that corporate strategy should be executed as
covertly as possible. A financier involved in Oak Pacific's financing rounds
said that this episode prompted him to rethink the relationship between
availability of capital and how start-up businesses operate. Some also said
that start-up companies should resist the temptation to diversify too early,
"Even deities with super-natural powers cannot manage such diverse
operations". Experience internet businessman Xie wen-zong concluded
by saying, "Oak Pacific is a microcosm of Chinese internet companies: only
interested in value 'on paper', driven by short-term gains and lack the mindset
to develop a scalable, sustainable infrastructure.

Although it may be premature to draw
conclusions on the fate of Oak Pacific, there is little doubt that this
uniquely Chinese story will, in time, be considered as one of the tragedies
resulting from the Chinese internet start-up bubble circa 2005. Recently, Chen
has started signing off emails with the title "Chief Stickiness
Officer". Whilst this is meant to demonstrate commitment to his company's
cause, it is also a ridiculous, almost self-defecating title that is never used
outside the internet industry. Companies with captivating new business
concepts, star management teams and significant capital investments are not
uncommon occurrences, but few actually meet its initial lofty expectations. The
story of Oak Pacific is but one instance in a series of tragedies in the
Chinese internet industry.

Add Comment

Related：

 网络民族主义：网上仇恨的勇敢新世界

 互联网时代的悖论：文献越多，引用越少

 谁在点击广告？

xml:lang="EN-US" lang="EN-US"><font face="Arial" size=

Unfortunately, Abei has been blind about the mystery. Since
2005, Abei had been
working hard on new featured

college/university students. However, the
new services barely worked, they
were still big magnets to the
student crowd because those services
catered well to the special
high tastes of this demographics
for books, movies and music. We
understand that because it also reminds us of a kind of
consumeristic mindset—“I have no
money, but I can pretend to be a petit
bourgeois hanging out at a classy community online where no one
knows if I have no money or not.”—when we were students.
Douban was unsurprisingly, easily
cosseted by the young-well-educated crowd. And the big media
coverage, plus students’ buzz, combined to give
Douban the growth
curve a big push.

However, when the the young-well-educated landed on Douban,
they just ended up talking about odds and ends, what they needed is
just a small group without too many JAVA applets or AJAX stuff.
They could give Abei’s sophisticated
“algorithm” ideas a short shrift as long as the simple groups were
created. And Abei himself was
absorbed in optimizations of
Douban’s products,
still ignorant of what the
exactly users wanted to get.
The predictable result is:
Abei was virtually
isolated from the psyche of the
users, both users and Abei got to a point
where they split over what new

"SpellE">Douban could offer, even
though they were bonded to
Douban. It’s signal
that the fanfare in 2005 was
gone forever, and Douban per se was almost
on the verge of a failed
innovation—most of users didn’t try
out other services, other than
Groups. Without the next pushing
force, the Douban
growth curve doubtlessly, predictably, went
flat.

A
quick flashback at the evolution of web in China shows us that
Douban is NOT an isolated case; the
