You can't escape Batman mania, and now that evil joker grins is everywhere! Seriously, it's all over the internet! To mark the release of the movie, bloggers everywhere have been defacing their avatars with evil joker grins. Warner Bros. has even created an application which lets the owners of iPhones or the iPod touch put a sinister smile on their face. Here's just a few I found.

If you've managed to get your paws on an iPhone or already own an iPod touch, you can download the Warner Bros. application through iTunes. Tonight, Sydneysiders, grab a blanket and head to Darlinghurst from 7.30 because the Darlo bar is playing Harold & Maude...for free!!! A most amazing, quirky film, Harold and Maude is a cult classic that plays with slapstick, black comedy, existentialism and beautiful whimsical imagery. The soundtrack was also composed and performed by Cat Stevens. Darlo Bar is at 306 Liverpool street, sydney. One day back in 1974 thousands of New Yorkers stared up at the Twin Towers in shock and horror. No, I'm not confused, I'm just referring to the day that Phillip Petit attempted a high-wire walk between the top floors Trade Center towers. "Man on Wire" is a documentary chronicling Petit and the various tight-ropes walked and laws broken during his career (including one involving the Sydney Harbour Bridge). Directed by film maker James Marsh, the hair-raising documentary debuted earlier this year at Sundance - where it one the Grand Jury prize. "Man on wire" is due in Australian cinemas later this year.

Email this | Comments

Disney a lot deeper than you thought...

Posted by Kirsten Drysdale

If you're an 80s baby like me, odds are you also grew up singing "Under The Sea" along with Sebastian the lobster and longing for a mane of ranga-red hair.

Well, the things you learn on Wikipedia...

	"Seachange or
sea change is a poetical or informal term meaning a profound transformation; big significant change. The expression is Shakespeare's, taken from the song in
The Tempest, when Ariel sings,

'Full fathom five thy father lies,
Of his bones are corals made,
Those are pearls that were his eyes, Nothing of him that doth fade,
But doth suffer a sea change,
into something rich and strange,
Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell, Ding-dong.
Hark! now I hear them, ding-dong, bell.'..."

"Ariel". What a perfectly ironic moniker for the singing mermaid who longs for life on the land!

Email this | Comments

See you at the Darlo, dahliink

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

In my humble opinion the Darlo Bar is up there as one of the coolest pubs in Sydney. A big call I know (especially as Sydney is so well known for it's bars aye) but consider these reasons:

a) It's located conveniently around the corner from my house, which makes it "a local" and therefore necessitates my endorsement

b) It has a sweet courtyard with white wrought iron furniture, Astroturf, comfy couches and glamour shots of kittens

c) Each Tuesday it puts that courtyard to fine use by holding a free movie screening.

Yes my friends, settle in with a glass of red, free popcorn and an expertly chosen classic flick. Previous movies have included Rosemary's Baby; the amazingly excellent Withnail & I and Manhattan. Tonight, Tuesday July 8 sees Monty Python's the Meaning of Life as your entertainment. Seating is first in, best view so to be sure to get to the corner of Liverpool and Darlinghurst Rd by 7.30pm.

Email this | Comments

"If it can be written, or thought, it can be filmed”

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

Do you know who once uttered the title of this post? If so then maybe you should consider entering a film in this years DigiSPAA competition. Although it sounds like a new model of swimming pool, DigiSPAA is in fact the leading showcase for low-budget filmmaking in Australia and New Zealand. Recognising that big ideas don't necessarily need to be backed up by big budgets, DigiSPAA encourages young people to experiment with more accessible and cheaper forms of filmmaking technology. Entries for this year's competition close on Friday September 19, with the finalist films being screened at the SPAA Fringe Conference at Sydney's Chauvel Cinema on October 24 and 25. Oh and did I mention prizes? How about $15,000 cash, $20,000 worth of postproduction and a return trip to the prestigious Rotterdam Cinemart International Feature Film Market? Phew! If this sounds like something you could have a crack at then head here for details.

Email this | Comments

Nutricious and delicious

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

Once upon a time, crazy German auteur Werner Herzog proclaimed that he would "eat his shoe" should friend and documentary maker Errol morris ever finish a film. Well, in 1980 Morris did complete a film - the now well-known "Gates of Heaven" - and above is footage of Herzog indeed munching down on his daggy leather shoe. Apparently the trick is to simmer the shoe in duck stock and garlic for several hours before washing back the chewy dish with a beer. The film (cleverly entitled "Werner Herzog Eats his Shoe") is by another brilliant documentary maker, Les blank, and you can view more of it here.

Email this | Comments

WARNING: british humour

Posted by Michelle Hendriks

How cool does this movie look? Established seven years ago in Portland, Girls Rock is a sort of school camp/ School of rock hybrid where 8-18 year old girls come together to rock out; learning how to play instruments, form bands, write songs, perform and build community and self-esteem all in one week. Girls Rock is a documentary made by film makers Arne Johnson and Shane King in the summer of 2007. It follows four girls - a teenage former meth addict, an adorably self-assured 7yr-old, a extroverted metal fan and a shy 8yr-old with a daisy-shaped guitar - as they attend the camp of the same name and embark on a bit of self-discovery; letting the audience into the often pressured and confused minds of adolescent girls in the 21st century. This film is apparently very cool and moving and lovely; with appearances from the stereotype bucking likes of Beth Ditto and Carrie Brownstein (of Sleater-Kinney fame). Unfortunately, given it's slightly underground status, the film has yet to play outside of the States but let's hope that with people power it shows up at our theaters soon - goodness knows it could be a nice change from Hannah Montana et al.

Email this | Comments

Teeny weeny boppy

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

Do you remember your last year of highschool? How your feelings seemed so much more intense then? How the things that barely register now were once-upon-a-year-twelve-time so all encompassing? Sometimes it's nice to think back to how it all was at the edge of adulthood, and the movie American Teen
does a pretty good job of reminding you - even if you didn't happen to attend a highly cliched, middle-American highschool. For ten months, film maker Nanette Burstein (who also made the fabulous documentary,
The Kid Stays in the Picture) followed and filmed a group of final year students at a high school in the conservative christian town of Warsaw, Indiana. Each day Burstein had unfettered access to the student's "insecurities, cliques, jealousies, first loves and heartbreaks" and just like a real life version of the
Breakfast Club, each subject slotted easily into the stereotype of geek, jock, princess, outsider and rebel. But as Burstein continued to spend time with them - and as the documentary unfolds for the viewer - each teenage character develops into something more and makes a masterpiece from the feelings we can all, no matter how old, remember.
American Teen is due out in cinemas this July.

Email this | Comments

Advance Aus-trailer fair

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

Despite not being slated for release until November, the world is currently anticipating Baz Luhrmann's "epic tale",

Australia, as fervently as the hag-rags are of Nicole Kidman's first baby pics. Excitement was stepped up a notch yesterday with the Internet release of the first

official trailer (slightly different to the clever fakes that have been popping up on the 'tube). Although yesterday only available to Big Pond customers, the trailer has today been made viewable to all those with access to the internet. You can view it here, Set in Northern Australia just prior to WWII,

Australia is based around the fight between an English aristocrat (played by Kidman) and a group of English cattle barons who have designs on her sizable chunk of sunburnt land. Add to this a romance with a "rough-hewn cattle driver" (Hugh Jackman), 2,000 cattle and a race across hundreds of miles of unforgiving land and you have quite the cinematic adventure on your hands. Here's hoping the film lives up to the hype!

Email this | Comments

Sh*t be wack!

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

Ooh my, am I looking forward to this one – and not just because Mary-Kate Olsen's on the credit roll. The Wackness is your edgier variety of “coming of age” story; set in early Guiliani-era New York (a Larry-Clarke-favoured time when Biggie and 2-Pac were still kickin' it and pagers were the must-have communication device), the plot follows awkward teenage pot dealer Luke and his burgeoning friendship with his drug-addled, receding hair-lined therapist, Dr Squires. The two set off on various adventures across NYC as Squires introduces the young Luke to various Manhattan misfits - including “A Phish following, dread-locked pixie” who's played aptly by the pixie-like MK. Not only does the story sound cool but visually The Wackness is pretty amazing too; a back drop of 94' New York at it's most grimy and costumes that are not unlike what we're currently seeing a resurgence of on the world's more hipster-ish streets (think Chloe Sevigny for Opening ceremony – all lace-up boots and Liberty prints). The Wackness is due in cinemas this July.

Email this | Comments

Driving me up the Wall-E

Posted by Kym Naimo

Guaranteed to delight and thrill almost all members of my family (and many others around the world) Pixar animations are due to launch their latest film Wall-E in the coming months. Famous for classics such as Toy Story and Finding Nemo (my favourite), Wall-E follows the story of the last robot on earth, who finds love after 700 years of being alone. Not much else is known about the plot however it is said that in a throwback to silent movies of the past, the first 45 minutes are entirely dialogue free. With breathtaking visuals and Pixar's usual story telling flair this is sure to be another classic in the making.

Email this | Comments

Where the Wild Things Aren't?

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

So, let's say you are a film company and you're wanting to make a movie out of a much loved children's book. You hire a director who has forged a career with off-beat and slightly uneasy music videos and later, off-beat and slightly uneasy movies. So, errr, are you that surprised when he creates for you an off-beat and slightly uneasy adaptation of the book? Especially a book that is as off-beat and uneasy as Where the Wild Things Are? It seems Warner Bros are. In what many saw as a perfect fit, the studio took on Spike Jonze to shoot the Maurice Sendak classic but following a recent test screening the powers that be are now freaking out that the film's not looking “commercial enough”. Now; although they hired Jones, green-lit the script he and Dave Eggars wrote and poured 75 million into the thing, Warners are apparently looking to re-shoot the entire movie!!!!! How ridiculous - if there is one thing that movies such as Pans Labrynth and even Harry Potter have shown, it's that dark and Delphic cinematic stories are ones that appeal to children and adults alike…………just like the book you might say!

Email this | Comments

Creepiest music video EVER

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

groupies called Tara and Ginger and can mould into any shape that he wants to! Awesome. Dora
is no green, clay, cosmic display that's for sure.

Email this | Comments

School for scandal

Posted by

I'm so excited to see St Trinians! Based on the work of reclusive cartoonist Ronald Searle, the upcoming film is the sixth in a series of Trinian movies that have been released since 1954. The plot revolves around the fictional St Trinians; an alternitive girl's school that's home to some of the most anarchic and uncontrolable young women in the U.K. Upon discovering that their school is facing closure at the hands of the banks and and the educational minister, the St Trinians girls (who operate in segregational cliques such as "Posh totty", "Chavs", "Emos", "Geeks" and "First years") use their vivacity, wit and light-fingers to get the school back on track. The cast list appears to have been sourced from one of Kate Moss's birthday parties or a booth at The Hawley Arms - with comedian Russell Brand, model Lily Cole and saucy pop group; Girls Aloud, clocking up time in home-room with Colin Firth, Rupert Everett, Mischa Barton and impossibly hip newcomer; Gemma Arterton (who - fresh out of drama school - beat out Sienna Miller for the role of rebellious head girl, Kelly).
St Trinians is due out here from March 27.

Email this | Comments

Old Man Oscar

Posted by Katie May Ruscoe

As I write this, Hollywood's A-list (and Lisa Rinna) are sashaying along the long red carpet; stopping for the assorted media and bleacher creatures on their way up to the Kodak Theatre for 80th Annual Academy awards, AKA, The Oscars. Bloggers and media outlets alike are currently in a live-feed frenzy as each member of the glitterati arrives; placing last-minute bets on both the award and- the equally important- fashion stakes. This years "it" colour is so far looking to be red; a bold choice of hue that some, more surmisive, people could attribute to the triumph of this particular year's event. This is of course the Oscars ceremony that, due to the recent writers strike, very nearly didn't happen. But it has and so this evening I shall be on the couch, resplendent in my most glamorous pyjamas, with a glass of wine in hand and my celebrity-sullied eyes glued to the glittery world of Mr Oscar.

Email this | Comments

Chanel On Film

Posted by emily Naismith

If the closest you have ever got to real Chanel is stealing sprays of No. 5 or Coco Mademoiselle from the tester bottles as you walk through the cosmetics section of Myer then you can stop dreaming now! Melbourne's ACMI cinemas have put on a special program that focuses on the legend behind Chanel, one of the world's most famous couture fashion houses. Three different films will be screened from Saturday 23rd February to Monday 3rd March as part of the 2008 L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival. You might have to stop off at Myer on the way just so you smell the part.

Email this | Comments
