I know for most individuals, it can be a real daunting task to source safer products since they are not always readily available in stores. If you' re like many people these days, you hit the ground running with too many things to do, and often don't have time to sit down for breakfast - the most important meal of the day. BUT you do feel good about grabbing an energy, protein or vegetable drink, yogurt or breakfast bar, especially since your morning coffee already filled you up. Who could go wrong there?
Unfortunately, you can. Aspartame and Sucralose, synthetic sweeteners that can harm your body, are found in some of the so-called, healthy, supplemental drinks and foods mentioned above. Aspartame breaks down into two dangerous chemical compounds in the human body: formic acid and formaldehyde. Formic acid is an irritant - the same chemical produced by fire ants - and doesn't belong in the bloodstream. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogenic (cancer causing) preservative. It causes allergies, contact dermatitis, headaches, and chronic fatigue. The noxious vapour is extremely irritating to the mucous membranes of the eyes, nose and throat.

NaturalNews (NaturalNews.com) informs us that scientists from Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston have revealed results from a study outlining some of the effects of artificial sweeteners on the body. Conducted on a group of 3,000 women, the results indicated that those who drank two or more artificially-sweetened beverages a day doubled their risk of more-rapid-than-normal kidney function decline. The 11-year study evaluated the effects of all sweetened drinks on progressive kidney decline and discovered that two or more diet drinks leads to a two-fold increase in rapid kidney decline incidences.
When [the artificial sweetener] aspartame was first approved in the 1970s under the name "NutraSweet", studies were submitted as supposed proof that the artificial chemical was safe. The FDA initially approved the chemical in 1974 for use in a limited number of foods based upon the studies submitted by G.D. Searle Co., the company that invented aspartame.
A discovery made shortly thereafter by a research psychiatrist found that aspartic acid, a primary ingredient in aspartame, caused holes to form in the brains of mice. Investigation revealed that aspartame had caused tumours, seizures, brain holes, and death in many of the studies. All negative findings had been altered or scrubbed from the final reports delivered to the FDA when aspartame was first reviewed.
A study published in the January, 2008 issue of the Journal of Toxicology and Environmental Health revealed that the newer artificial sweetener, sucralose, alters gut microflora and inhibits the assimilation of dietary nutrients.
The EU Food Commission, Canadian health officials, and the U.S. FDA all rejected the initial studies submitted by McNeil Nutritionals, the marketers of sucralose, because of the negative results. However they encouraged the company to continue researching until they "got it right". McNeil simply lowered the levels of sucralose used in their studies until an acceptable limit was found. After several tries, sucralose was finally approved.

Beauty tip for silky legs.

I just thought of sharing this very economical and effective beauty tip with you all but first, allow me to share my favorite shaving product. And it's none other that the Miessence Certified Organic Shaving Gel. Unlike conventional shave creams, this formula does NOT dry out your skin and it also protects against razor burns, nicks and cuts. In my honest opinion, the texture feels quite gel-like and very silky to the touch. A very emollient formula for sure!

DIY Haircare: Flaxseed Hair Gel

One way of avoiding harsh chemicals used in personal care products is to simply make your own. Let's face it! Most of these ingredients are already housed in your pantry so why not get creative. You get to control what goes into your recipes and It's also an awesome step to a greener lifestyle. Won't you say? Flax seed offer numerous health benefits and also promotes healthy hair while chamomile is known for it's conditioning properties which leaves hair glowing and more manageable. Rosemary is also a wonderful herb that is believed to stimulate hair follicles and hair growth and even darken grays over time. My perspective? If these ingredients are good enough to eat then it's safe to use on my skin, body and hair:) This recipe safely yields approximately 16 ounces - depending on the consistency you opt for.

What you'll need:

1 1/4 Organic Flax Seeds (dark)
2 Tbsp Dried Rosemary
1 Chamomile Tea Bag
5 1/2 cup Distilled Water
1 ounce Aloe Gel
3 drops Lavender EO

Directions:

In a clean saucepan, bring water to a boil then slowly add all the ingredients except the tea bag and cook on medium heat until you see a gel-like consistency is formed then remove from heat and pass through a sieve. Add the tea bag just before you are ready to remove from heat and let cool for just a bit before straining out the seeds. Let the gel cool before adding the aloe gel and lavender EO. Stir well and simply transfer to a sterile glass container and keep in the refrigerator. Apply small amounts or as much as needed on damp or dry hair and style as usual.

I just realized that I have unintentionally neglected to share with you my most recent Organic goodies which were delivered to me a few weeks ago. For those of you who were curious to see what I treated myself to -- here goes, as pictured below. I barely managed to take a quick photo while they were still in the box. As always, I was in a mad rush -- the story of my life! I'm positive that you busy moms will certainly understand this craziness when having to juggle the daily household chores and parenting amongst your personal hobbies/interests. This is when I use the words 'daunting' and 'hectic', but very rewarding too. I enjoy motherhood and all the chores that accompany this blessing and would never change a thing about my crazy life:)

New study finds synthetic musks in umbilical cord blood.
Why? And how can you change this?

Today, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics founding member Environmental Working Group released a new study that found 232 chemical contaminants in umbilical cord blood samples from 10 newborn American babies. Among the findings: two synthetic musks, components of fragrance, were found in 7 of the 10 cord blood samples.

Artificial musks commonly added to fragrances and personal care products can be absorbed through skin or inhaled, and concentrate and persist in our bodies - so our many small exposures can add up fast. Synthetic musks have also been found in human breast milk and fatty tissues, and are ubiquitous in wastewater and rivers.

The cosmetics industry and other industries that use "fragrance" in their products use a whopping 9,000 tons of synthetic musk annually, despite the fact that little is known about the safety of these chemicals. Unfortunately, preliminary research raises concerns: musks may disrupt hormones and are toxic to aquatic life.

Because of a loophole in labeling law, the ingredients in "fragrance" are considered trade secrets, so companies don't have to tell us what's in scents - often dozens or even hundreds of synthetic chemical compounds like synthetic musks and other ingredients linked to harm.

Biomonitoring studies like this one make clear that chemicals - many of which have never been tested for long-term safety or are known to be harmful - used in everyday products are ending up in our bodies and in our ecosystem. At the same time, cancer, infertility, and behavioral and developmental illnesses linked to many of these chemicals of concern are on the rise.

As consumers and citizens, we can fight the fragrance loophole. Here are three ways you can make a difference:
