Set New Year’s Resolutions that Strengthen Your
Life and Your CommunityThe New Year is a time for new beginnings! For the Y –
a leading nonprofit that strengthens community through youth development,
healthy living and social responsibility – one of the most important resolutions
is to resolve to make positive changes that strengthen individuals as well as entire
communities. Following are five New Year’s Resolutions the Y recommends for 2012:

1. Live Healthier – Achieving greater health and well-being is all about taking small
steps. Take care of your health by eating nutritious foods and being physically
active each day – experts recommend 30 minutes of daily physical activity for
adults and 60 minutes for kids. This can be achieved throughout the day by incorporating physical activity into your daily
routines (i.e., taking stairs instead of elevators, walking instead of driving,
etc.) The Y
offers many fun opportunities for individuals and families to be active.

2. Volunteer – Doing good feels good, and giving back to support neighbors benefits
everyone involved. Volunteering also provides individuals the opportunity to
meet new people and to develop new relationships. Find an opportunity in your
community that you may enjoy, such as cleaning your neighborhood park or
distributing food at a local food bank.

3. Help Inspire Children and Teens, Be a Mentor – Children and teens often need caring adults to
look up to and seek guidance. By nurturing our youth, we can help them strive
to accomplish success and reach their full potential. Whether a relative or
neighbor, use your experience and talent to help youth realize who they are and
what they can be.

4. Learn Something New<a name="OLE_LINK2"></a><a name="OLE_LINK1"> </a>– Step out of your comfort zone, have fun and grow
by exploring personal interests. Is there a swimming, Zumba or painting class
you’ve always wanted to take? Try something new that you’ve always wanted to do,
to build your spirit, mind or body.

5. Spend Time with Family and Friends – Socializing is good for your well-being
and spending time with the people you care most about really helps strengthen meaningful
relationships. It also helpful to have a community of people you can reach out
to during times of need. So, try to carve out time each month, depending on
your schedule, to connect with family and friends, and to get involved with
community organizations.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/pLdbjncwB04" height="1" width="1"/>

"Fill the Fin" Raises $ for Swim Lessons

Teams of San Diego lifeguards are hitting the beaches with fins in hand as they
launch a weeklong “Fill the Fin” campaign to raise money for much-needed swim
lessons for inner city youth and to spread the message of water safety.

From Aug. 12 to Aug. 19, lifeguards are volunteering at city
beaches to collect coins and dollars in their bright-colored rubber footwear to
fund aquatic programs at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA in southeastern San
Diego.

“It is estimated that 33,000 children ages 5 to 12 who live
in our service area have never taken swimming lessons to develop a healthy
respect for the water. And most do not even have proper swimwear,” said the
local Y’s Executive Director Michael Brunker.

With the help of elected officials and members of the San
Diego Lifesaving Association, underserved kids from Skyline to City Heights may
soon be better equipped with swimwear, aquatic safety training, and swimming
lessons – as well as a more memorable summer.

“Many parents and kids in poor and minority neighborhoods
haven’t grown up around water and don’t have access or the economic means for
swim lessons,” said San Diego City Council President Tony Young. “That’s why
they experience a disproportionately higher rate of drowning.”

In San Diego, drowning is the leading cause of non-natural
death among children under 5, and rip currents, like the recent powerful ones in
La Jolla Shores, are a dangerous reminder of the need to teach swimming and
water safety to area youth.

According to City Lifeguard Sergeant Ed Harris, better
targeted water safety messages and swimming lessons geared toward inner city
kids can help reduce the number of tragedies.

“From our Junior Lifeguard to our Water Proofing programs, we
are continually looking for ways to promote aquatic safety to underserved youth
throughout the City of San Diego,” said Harris, noting that many beach-area
businesses are sponsoring lifeguards in this year’s inaugural fundraising drive.

San Diego City Councilmember Sherri Lightner, who represents
the La Jolla beach community and is a strong supporter of improved lifeguard
staffing and training, also is teaming with lifeguards to send an urgent summer
message about water safety and drowning prevention to swimmers, parents and
caregivers.

“Our lifeguards do a great job but water safety is everyone’s
responsibility,” Lightner said. “We all need protect our youth and educate them
about swim safety.”
San Diego residents and out-of-town beach visitors alike can
donate money to the “Fill the Fin” campaign at lifeguard stations from Ocean
Beach to Torrey Pines through Friday, Aug. 19. For collection site volunteer or
business sponsorship opportunities, contact San Diego Lifesaving Association
President Jeffrey Hatfield at (619) 944-4289 (or online at:
Facebok.com/FilltheFin).

Pledges of $50 or more to provide a child with swim wear and
lessons also can be made by calling the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA directly at
(619) 264-0144.
For a listing of City of San Diego beaches and lifeguard
services, call (619) 221-8899 or visit sandiego.gov/lifeguards.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/Plwt7DQHrYI" height="1" width="1"/>

For kids and adults looking to escape the hot sun this summer,
the YMCA of San Diego County invites everyone to <a target="_self" href="http://www.ymca.org/swim.html">swim at the Y</a>. At the Y, there
are a variety of programs that help swimmers
learn water
safety skills, develop confidence in and around the water and enjoy the
benefits of water exercise.

“Swimming is a fun and enjoyable
activity for children and adults alike, and it has many health benefits,” said Baron Herdelin-Doherty, CEO and President of the YMCA
of San Diego County. The Y is committed to providing as many opportunities as possible for everyone
to learn basic swimming lessons and water safety practices. We encourage kids
and adults to take swim lessons – it’s never too late to learn.”The Y encourages kids and adults to have fun
when in and around the water, but to always make safety their first priority. YMCA
of San Diego County recommends the following safety tips for children and
adults:

Only swim when
and where there is lifeguard on duty; never swim alone.Adults should
constantly watch children in and near the water. If multiple adults are in the
vicinity, designate a “water watcher” so everyone knows who is “on duty.” Inexperienced
swimmers should take precaution and wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved personal
floatation device (PFD) when in, on or around the water.

Children who are
beginners should stay within arm's reach of an adult in the water. As a leading nonprofit committed to
strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social
responsibility, the Y works to ensure everyone has an opportunity to learn,
grow and thrive. This philosophy drives the YMCA of San Diego County’s
commitment to help children and adults experience the joy and benefits of
swimming.

You can find a variety of swim programming for children and adults all across the county at one of the 22 YMCA swimming pools, <a href="http://www.ymca.org/swim.html">http://www.ymca.org/swim.html</a>To ensure that everyone has
an opportunity to participate, financial assistance is available to those in
need to help cover the costs.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/stwica-uhMc" height="1" width="1"/>

<a title="YMCA Healthy Kids Day" href="http://www.ymca.org/hkd"></a> On Saturday, April 16, the YMCA of San Diego County is encouraging all kids and parents to come to their local Y for a play date and commit to being active every day. It’s all part of the YMCA’s Healthy Kids Day™ – the nation’s largest health day for families. The free event will take place at most Y branches from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. and feature activities such as basketball, soccer, family play time, relay courses, health fairs, healthy tips, health screenings, camp highlights and membership specials. As a leading nonprofit strengthening community through healthy living, the Y holds Healthy Kids Day to teach healthy habits to kids and inspire a lifetime love of physical activity. At a time when one in three children in the United States are overweight or obese (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), developing healthier habits that include increased physical activity is more important than ever. “At the Y we know that parents struggle to find the time to incorporate more active play and healthier habits into their kids’ daily routine,” says Baron Herdelin-Doherty President and CEO, YMCA of San Diego County. “Doing so doesn’t have to require extra money or resources. It’s as simple as making a play date with your kids, with two key requirements – be active and have fun!” As part of Healthy Kids Day, the Y encourages families to make play dates everyday as a simple way to become healthier, more active and connected. The YMCA of San Diego County recommends five simple activities families can do to play together:1. Schedule a Game Night: Play games with the kids that incorporate physical activity, such as Charades. 2. Dance, Dance: Turn on your favorite party music and dance! Make this activity more fun with a dance contest. 3. Go Riding: Find a new bike path or park for a fun afternoon outdoors; grab your helmets and go rollerblading or bike riding. 4. Channel Your Inner Youth: Remember playing hopscotch, jump rope, Simon Says or freeze tag as a kid? Teach your favorite childhood game to your kid(s) and play them together. 5. Play Outside: Visit your neighborhood park or camp out in your backyard for some outdoor fun. Get everyone moving with fun sports like soccer, basketball or baseball. Healthy Kids Day will be celebrated at nearly 1,600 Ys across the country, with more than 700,000 families expected to attend this year. Healthy Kids Day is supported by the <a title="Sempra Energy Foundation" href="http://www.sempra.com/community/foundation/">Sempra Energy Foundation</a>, <a title="Kaiser Permanente" href="http://thrivewithkp.org/?campaign=van_kporgthrive?WT.srch=1">Kaiser Permanente</a> and the <a title="San Diego Union Tribune" href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/">San Diego Union Tribune</a>. In addition, the South Bay Family YMCA is proud to host a free Family Fun/Walk at the Otay Ranch Town Center, 2015 Birch Road, Chula Vista starting at 9:30 a.m. The South Bay Family YMCA will host all Healthy Kids Day activities at the Otay Ranch Town Center including a bounce house for kids, youth fitness demonstrations, dancing, family music, healthy food, more than 75 information booths, free give-a-ways, opportunity drawings and a SDG&amp;E Light Bulb Exchange.
The
YMCA of San Diego County has launched its Strong Kids Annual Support Campaign
to financially support individuals and families in need, so that they can
participate in YMCA programs and services. Funds raised directly support the
Y’s cause of strengthening communities by nurturing the potential of every
youth and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being and providing
opportunities to give back and support neighbors.

Providing
financial support is critical to the Y’s goal of ensuring that everyone has
access to programs and services that support their individual health and
well-being.

“At
the YMCA of San Diego County, we count on the generosity of our donors and
volunteers to make a meaningful impact on our community,” said Shelly
McTighe-Rippengale, Senior VP Development and Communications, YMCA of San Diego
County. “We believe that lasting personal and social change can only come about
when we all work together to invest in our kids, our health and our neighbors.”

The
Annual Support Campaign is the "lifeblood" of the YMCA and is
conducted annually by volunteers to secure charitable donations from
individuals, companies, foundations, and community organizations to help fund
the YMCA´s extensive youth programs. These funds help to insure that no child
is ever turned away due to an inability to pay.

As part of Character Development
month, the YMCA Food
Drive, in partnership with Move For Hunger, benefited
Feeding America San Diego, the largest distributor of donated food in San Diego County. Members and participants of several local Ys came together to collect unopened, non-perishable food items to
distribute to the needy. During October, collection boxes were conveniently
located at nine Y locations throughout San Diego County. Together, we donated a total
of 1101 lbs. of food, the equivalent of 1409 meals for San Diego County
residents in need.

Feeding America San Diego plays an
important part in the fight against hunger in San Diego County. Working with 175+ partner agencies
including the Y, Feeding America San Diego is able to help feed approximately
73,000 families, kids and seniors each week. The Center on Policy Initiatives
and United
Way of San
Diego recently released a report that showed 3 in 10
households in the County don’t earn enough to make ends meet. When people are
faced with such economic hardship, food is often one of the first things that is
minimized.
Each October, thousands of
children and their families all across the county are engaged and focused on the
YMCA core values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility as all branches
celebrate Character Development Month. Through a special grant and partnership
with the Sempra Energy Foundation, we dedicate the month to challenging
others to accept and demonstrate the values through a variety of programs and
activities. Character Development Month has been celebrated by the Y for the
past 10+ years. Its purpose is to highlight our year-round focus on
teaching and demonstrating core values in our programs.

The Four Values of the
Y:
Caring
Show a sincere concern for
others
Honesty
Be truthful in what you say and
do
Respect
Follow the golden
rule
Responsibility
Be accountable for your promises
and actions<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/LnjlY5i39vE" height="1" width="1"/>

The YMCA of San Diego County is
pleased to announce that the <a title="Jackie Robinson Family YMCA" href="http://www.jackierobinson.ymca.org/">Jackie Robinson
Family YMCA</a> has recently been selected to receive a $4,989,927
grant from <a title="California State Parks and the Office of Grants and Local Services (OGALS)" href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=1008">California State Parks and
the Office of Grants and Local
Services (OGALS)</a>. This is the only Y
to receive one of the 62 state wide grants that were made available under the
Sustainable Communities and Climate Change Reduction Chapter of Proposition 84.

Round One of this Statewide Park
Program was intensely competitive.
The Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Teen and Family Recreation Center project was selected
for funding from a pool of almost 500 applications.
“This is an
incredible boost for arguably the most critical community of San Diego County,” said Michael Brunker, Executive
Director of the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA. “This investment from the State of
California
will build a legacy for our inner-city community. It allows us to immediately
expand the mission-driven programs of the Y based on needs identified by our
community.”

Currently the
wellness center at the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA is 1300 square feet. The
renovation and creation of the new Teen and Family Recreation Center will be 6000 square feet with the
option of expansion to 8000. The project also includes a Y Child Watch facility,
allowing families child care as they use the facilities, a new parking lot,
lobby and administrative offices.

“These
dollars jump start the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA Capital Campaign project that
is focused on completely rebuilding this Y,” said Baron Herdelin-Doherty,
President and CEO, YMCA of San Diego County. “It will bring equal services to
this deserving community.”
The grants are going
to cities, counties, park districts and non-profit organizations all across
California and
will create 50 new parks and improve 12 existing parks. The grant recipients
were selected in round one of two grant distributions authorized under the
statewide park program within Proposition 84. In the Proposition, $400 million
was made available for the acquisition and development of park and recreation
facilities. Priority is given to new parks and the expansion of overused
parks.

“The Y is a cause
for strengthening community, committed every day to youth development, healthy
living and social responsibility,” said Brunker. “This grant reinforces all of
the great work that Y has invested in the Southeastern San Diego community since
1943 and allows us to extend our reach to work tirelessly to nurture the
potential of kids, improve health and well-being, and give back and support our
neighbors.”

Projections for the
completion of the project estimate that the Jackie Robinson Family YMCA will be
able to serve an additional 4500 - 6000 households.

A list of the
selected projects can be found at <a title="Selected Parks Projects" href="http://www.parks.ca.gov/grants">www.parks.ca.gov/grants</a>.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/mCcp56O9klA" height="1" width="1"/>

Gift is part of $1 million
national charitable giving initiative to support national urban education and
outreachYMCA
Youth &amp; Family Services, the social service department of the YMCA of San
Diego County, has received a grant of $15,000 from Sam’s Club to enhance programs
designed to help teens prepare for and achieve higher education. The award is part of a $1 million gift to YMCA
of the USA (Y-USA), the resource office for the nation’s 2,687 Ys, for placing
first in the education category of the Sam’s Club “Giving Made Simple” online
campaign, conducted earlier this year.

The gift to Y-USA is supporting national urban education and
outreach initiatives, including YMCA’s Achievers, an academic achievement and
college readiness program designed to help teens set and pursue high
educational and career goals. At YMCA
Youth &amp; Family Services, the funding will be used to provide additional
academic support to foster youth and homeless youth as they work to attain
their high school degrees and move on to higher education.

“We are grateful
that YMCA Youth &amp; Family Services was selected to receive funding from the
Giving Made Simple campaign and we want to thank Sam’s Club and all of its
members and associates who voted for the Y,” said Kim Morgan, Executive
Director. “This gift will help to
support our ongoing efforts to bring the vital work we do with youth and teens
to the forefront of our community.”

Through YMCA’s Achievers and
other youth development initiatives such as Youth in Government and College
Goal Sunday, Ys across the country provide youth with opportunities for
academic enrichment, college access support, adult mentors and leadership
skills. YMCA Youth &amp; Family Services is one of 60 Ys selected to receive
$15,000 grants from the Giving Made Simple campaign.

Giving Made Simple was designed to support educational
programs aimed at empowering the nation’s youth to ensure they succeed in the
future, and small business and entrepreneurial programs that help business
owners launch, sustain and grow their businesses. In April, Sam’s Club members and associates
were encouraged to log on to the company’s web site, or use the social media
sites Facebook and Twitter, to vote for one of eight participating non-profit
organizations – four in the entrepreneurial category and four in the education
category. Y- USA
placed first in the education category. Sam’s Club also accepted votes in its
stores nationwide on one designated day.

“Giving Made
Simple is an exciting addition to our charitable efforts and complements our core
business strategy that puts our members first in everything we do at Sam’s
Club,” said Brian Cornell, President and CEO. ”We believe that by supporting
organizations like the Y that are dedicated to preparing children and teens for
life-long success – we are making an investment in the communities and people
we serve.”<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/C9L4eiKKMII" height="1" width="1"/>

YMCA Camp
Marston in Julian, CA is hosting the
National Military Family Association’s popular Operation Purple summer
camp this week August 22-27, 2010. The Association developed this free summer camp program in
response to the need for increased support for military children, especially
those whose parents are or will be deployed.

240 kids,
ages 7 – 15, from all over San Diego County and beyond attend the camp for FREE
thanks to support from the Sierra Club and The Sierra Club Foundation.

“Our mission is to empower these military children – our youngest heroes
– to develop and maintain healthy and connected relationships, in spite of the
current military environment. Kids attending Operation Purple camp will
have the opportunity to learn the skills to cope with the stress of a
deployment and make friends with other kids who are also missing their mom or
dad,” said Mary Scott, the Association’s Chairman of the Board. “The National
Military Family Association is excited to work with the YMCA of San Diego
County on this very worthwhile program.”

Children have the opportunity to share their military
parents’ stories and photos on the “Wall of Honor” and with the rest of the
campers. Each camper brings in a picture of their family member and it is
posted with notes and letters on a wall for the entire week.

The camp is “purple” which means that is open to
children of service members of any branch of Service, active duty, National
Guard or Reserve, as well as children of members of the Commissioned Corps of
the Public Health Service and National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration.

On Wed., Aug 24 there will be a landing of a US
Coast Guard MH-60T Jayhawk
Medium Range
Recovery Helicopter. Also, the 1st Marine Logistics Group, Seventh
Engineer Support Battalion from Camp Pendleton
will arrive in a 7-ton battle truck and Humvee, including four Marines in full
battle gear.

Operation
Purple campers
will be able to meet the Marines and Coast Guard service members, view
equipment, take photos and ask questions.

Camp Marston, in Julian, is owned
and operated by the YMCA of San Diego County. Situated on 236 acres of
forests, trails and meadows, the camp features a pond for boating and fishing,
archery and marksmanship ranges, play fields, swimming pool and lodging for 280
children and staff. Marston operates year round with traditional summer
youth camps, school outdoor education programs, family camps and group
rentals. In all, over 17,000 children and adults attend YMCA Camp Marston
each year.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/eMyfCmmto5Y" height="1" width="1"/>

Excerpt from The Non Profit Times, The Leading Business Publication for Non Profit ManagementAugust 1 , 2010 By Mark Hrywna
Now that the YMCA is simply “The Y,” it joins a
number of the nation’s largest nonprofits reinventing themselves in
recent years with new branding and logo. The national YMCA of the USA,
headquartered in Chicago, Ill., announced the change last month at The
National Press Club in Washington, D.C. All of its 2,680 local
affiliates should transition to the new logo and name within five
years.
                 It is the first
new brand strategy for The Y since 1967 and the sixth since the
organization was established in 1844. The rebranding effort grew out of
the organization’s 2007 strategic plan, starting in earnest two years
ago with analysis and research, culminating in March with meetings in
14 cities and several thousand staff and volunteers providing feedback.“We are changing how we talk about ourselves so
that people better understand the benefits of engaging with the Y,”
said Kate Coleman, senior vice president, chief marketing officer for
YMCA of the USA. “We are simplifying how we describe the programs we
offer so that it is immediately apparent that everything we do is
designed to nurture the potential of children and teens, improve health
and well-being and support our neighbors and the larger community,”
she said.Click <a href="http://www.nptimes.com/01Aug/npt-100801-3.html">http://www.nptimes.com/01Aug/npt-100801-3.html</a> for the full article.<a href="http://www.nptimes.com/01Aug/npt-100801-3.html"></a><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/dJw-ONyDMCM" height="1" width="1"/>

The YMCA
Unveils New Brand Strategy to Further Community Impact

Hundreds of Thousands
to benefit from YMCA of San Diego
County’s focus on youth
development, healthy living and social responsibility

For the first time in 43
years, YMCA of the USA
has unveiled a new brand strategy to
increase understanding of the impact that YMCAs make in communities across the
country. The YMCA has the unique
capacity to address many of the challenges facing the nation today. Through its new brand strategy and framework,
the nonprofit will extend its reach into communities to nurture the potential
of youth and teens, improve the nation’s health and well-being and provide
opportunities to support neighbors.

The new brand strategy – the result of more
than two years of analysis and research – was introduced today at a National
Press Club event that included leaders from the philanthropic and nonprofit
communities. As part of the event, the
YMCA unveiled a new, more forward-looking logo
that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the organization, and a framework
that focuses resources on three core areas: youth development, healthy living
and social responsibility. In another
major change, the nonprofit will be called “the Y” to align with how people
most commonly refer to the organization.

“The YMCA of San Diego County is truly
excited about the new brand strategy and the opportunity to connect more people
in the areas of healthy living, social responsibility and youth development,”
said Shelly McTighe-Rippengale, Vice President Marketing, Communications and
Development, YMCA of San Diego County. “There will be many changes taking place
at all of our branches – we are building momentum and this strategy engages
everyone from our volunteers to our members and donors.”

Hundreds of YMCA branches, camps and program centers
across the county will roll out the revitalized brand beginning today and will fully transition to the new brand within five years.

“This is a very important, exciting time for the Y,” said
Neil Nicoll, president and CEO of YMCA of the USA. “For 160 years, we’ve focused on changing
lives for the better. Our commitment to
building greater awareness for the important work we do will enable us to
expand our efforts and further strengthen communities across the country.”

Today,
across the United States,
Ys are making a difference in three key areas of focus:

Youth
Development: Nurturing the potential of every child and teen Healthy
Living: Improving
the nation’s health and well-being Social
Responsibility: Giving back and providing support to our neighbors

The Y’s former logo had been in place since 1967 and was the
organization’s sixth since its inception. The refreshed logo, with its multiple color options and new,
contemporary look, better reflects the vibrancy of the Y and the diversity of
the communities it serves. The new
logo’s bold, active and welcoming shape symbolizes the Y’s commitment to
personal and social progress.

The YMCA of San Diego County will host the Annual
President’s Round Table Luncheon on Wed., June 2 to acknowledge all
individuals, businesses, foundations and organizations that make an Annual
Support Campaign contribution of $1,000 or more. These generous donations help
the Y fulfill the goal of serving kids and families who need the programs the
most, but may not have the ability to participate because of a lack of funds.

The purpose of the luncheon is to say “THANKS” personally to
them and let them know what the Y is doing to earn their continued support.

The 2010 Annual Support Campaign was the most successful in
history, surpassing the goal by raising over $6 million. None of it was
possible without the help of all major donors in the campaign and the 3,000 committed
volunteers who made it so successful.

The luncheon also will serve as a backdrop to recognize the YMCA
of San Diego County Friends in the Media Awards. This year’s winners are Joice Truban
Curry, president and CEO of c3 Communications and Tayari Howard, on-air
personality, Smooth Jazz 98.1.

In 2000 the YMCA Marketing and Communications Committee
created the Friends in the Media Award to honor those who have made significant
contributions in helping to tell the YMCA’s story through the media. Through
their generous help, more of the San Diego
community are aware of the YMCA and its value to the community.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/W-hMxXsJMpo" height="1" width="1"/>

Instituted in 1993, the YMCA of San Diego County’s Annual
Public Speaking Contest helps to build self-esteem and confidence in YMCA youth
through the development of their public speaking and leadership skills. Thanks
to a grant from the Ruth Lane Charitable Foundation, the YMCA program and
contest is now in its 17th year.

Thousands of youth from throughout the county complete a six
week curriculum which then leads to branch and site finals and ultimately the
championships.

The finals will be held June 12, 2010 at the corporate
office of the YMCA of San Diego County at 11 a.m. Finalists will compete
for a grand prize of $250.

Each speech will be approximately two minutes long and they
will speak to the topic of “How do I make a difference using the four core YMCA
values of Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility?”

Participants are all currently a part of YMCA after-school
programs throughout San Diego
County.

These programs are funded through Education and Safety
grants received through local school districts, the County of San Diego’s
Critical Hours programs, parent fees and YMCA Annual Support Campaign
donations.

There are more than 10,000 youth involved in YMCA
after-school programs and this year more than 1,000 young people received
public speaking training through this program.

The comprehensive curriculum is based on the Toastmasters
International model. The lessons cover
specific elements that assist youth in preparing speeches as well as preparing a presentation.

The contestants compete in two categories; elementary school
youth and middle school youth. Contestants
are judged on content, delivery and effectiveness of their speeches.

Each participant will receive a certificate and the site
winners are presented with a $10 Border’s Bookstore gift card. Winners at the regional and branch level receive
a $100 American Express gift card. Final
grand prize winners each receive an additional $250 gift card.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/Qdnem0wS24g" height="1" width="1"/>

On the roof of the Magdalena Ecke Family <a class="DL-topic-highlighted" href="http://topics.signonsandiego.com/topic/YMCA">YMCA</a>,
memories come rushing back.

The four men and a woman forming the letters of the organization’s
name in pantomime, a la a popular disco group of the late ’70s, are the
offspring of five of the Y’s most ardent supporters. The offspring are
part of an annual fundraising project, Roof Raisers, their fathers
started four decades ago. It is the Y’s primary source of financial
support.Bob Ayers, 51, remembers being one of the first kids to swim in the
Y’s pool. Paul Ecke III, 54, recalls an exciting Indian Guides program
in which he was Little Buffalo and his father was Big Buffalo.

Ann Harloff, 61, sees herself feeling like an outsider during her
first function as a member of the YMCA’s board of directors 20 years
ago. <a href="http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/apr/25/children-spell-support-for-fathers-fundraising/">http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/apr/25/children-spell-support-for-fathers-fundraising/</a><img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/F7HJQbeKoZI" height="1" width="1"/>

But the sophomore from Classical Academy High School in Escondido

The Alexandria YMCA, part of the YMCA of Metropolitan
Washington hosted First Lady Michelle Obama, Department of Health and Human
Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and U.S. Surgeon General Regina Benjamin who
announced plans on Jan. 28, 2010 to help Americans lead healthier lives through better
nutrition, regular physical activity, and by encouraging communities to support
healthy choices. They talked directly with national and local leaders, parents
and health professionals about reducing overweight and obesity in adults and
children. (photo included below)

YMCA of the USA President and CEO Neil Nicoll
opened the event and introduced Dr. Benjamin, who released the Surgeon
General's Vision for a Healthy and Fit Nation. The report highlights
the alarming trend of overweight and obese Americans, and asks Americans to
join her in a grassroots effort to commit to changes that promote the health
and wellness of our families and communities.

The First Lady recently announced that she will
launch a major initiative on childhood obesity in the next few weeks and has
asked the YMCA to be engaged in those efforts. Today, she discussed her
firsthand experience with the challenges of raising healthy kids in today's
environment and mentioned the role of organizations such as the YMCA in helping
kids and families adopt healthy lifestyles.

YMCAs provide safe and affordable spaces and
programs to help both kids and adults learn, grow and thrive. In fact,
for nearly 160 years, YMCAs have offered programs that strengthen the physical,
emotional and spiritual health of millions of individuals from all backgrounds
and in all types of communities. Over the past several years, we have
increased our efforts to help stem the tide of rising obesity rates.

Being recognized by the First Lady, Secretary of
HHS and the Surgeon General is truly an honor and an indication of their trust
in us as a movement to help move the needle on the important issue of reducing
obesity and chronic disease. We cannot stress enough the significance of
today. It further elevated what YMCAs are doing across the nation to
support healthy living among all Americans.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/jeJ3HEXJARI" height="1" width="1"/>

When your corporate
mission is to “bring smiles to millions” then it only makes sense that
Vista, CA based flower grower and seller, Dos
Gringos donated 450 handmade wrist corsages to the YMCA Adventure Guides
Sweetheart Ball attended by girls aged 5-9 and their dads.

The corsages were handmade by Suzy Long, special
projects coordinator and were delivered by Jason Levin, Dos Gringos President
and his daughter the night of the event. “It really has become part of what we
do,” said Mr. Levin “If we can make people smile and give back to the communities that we
work and live, then we’ve accomplished our goal.”

Dos Gringos has a long history of donating flowers
throughout the San
Diego region. Scripps Hospital, Meals on Wheels, and numerous
charity events are the recipients of the company’s sought after flowers and
arrangements. ABOUT DOS GRINGOS

The global YMCA movement is responding in a coordinated effort to
address the immediate needs of the children, families and devastated
communities in Port au Prince, and surrounding areas.YMCA of the USA is deeply saddened and aggrieved by the tragic
earthquake in Haiti. The Haitian people are suffering a crisis of a
magnitude no one can comprehend. The evening of the earthquake, Gwenael
Apollon, General Secretary of the Haiti YMCA, reported that he, his
family, and YMCA staff survived, but that YMCA operations have been
severely impacted.
The global YMCA movement is responding in a coordinated effort to
address the immediate needs of the children, families and devastated
communities in Port au Prince, and surrounding areas through financial
support. Working in collaboration with the Red Cross, Action Churches
Together and other relief and emergency agencies, YMCAs around the
world are responding to the urgent basic needs of those displaced by
providing food, water, medicines, blankets; and in the longer term,
care and psycho-social counseling. In addition, the Dominican Republic
YMCA and the Latin American and Caribbean Alliance of YMCAs, with
support from the global YMCA movement, is planning to deliver critical
supplies and support to those impacted.Beyond these immediate efforts,
the YMCA will also evaluate the long-term needs for the impacted
communities to ensure the security and stability of children, youth and
families of Haiti.
If you would like to support our efforts in Haiti, please donate to YMCA World Service by <a href="http://www.ymca.net/worldservice/donate_to_worldservice.html">clicking here</a> or by calling the YMCA of the USA International Group at (800) 872-9622. (Please note: When donating online, it is important to specify “Haiti Earthquake Support” in the “Comments/special instructions” box at the bottom of the online donation page to ensure immediate designation of your contribution.)
To contribute by mail, please send a check (payable to YMCA World Service with “Haiti Earthquake Support” noted in the memo line) to YMCA of the USA, attention YMCA World Service, 101 North Wacker Drive, Chicago, Illinois 60606.
Updates on the YMCA’s efforts will be posted as they become
available. For more information, please contact the YMCA of the USA
International Group at (800) 872-9622. We ask for your support, hope
and prayers for the Haiti YMCA and the people of Haiti.<img src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/ymca1/ymca-news-room/~4/QDq4EnBBmQE" height="1" width="1"/>

The YMCA of
San Diego County will make the holidays brighter for more than 4,000 deserving
children through its annual Holiday Toy Drive. Now through Dec. 12, the YMCA
will be accepting new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children through the age of
17 at any San Diego County YMCA
location. Donations
will largely benefit deserving, low-income youth from Border View, Copley
Family, and Jackie Robinson Family YMCAs.
In addition, gifts will assist YMCA OZ Shelters that provide both
temporary and long-term shelter and support services for youth with the goal of
increasing self-sufficiency, positive relationships, academic achievement and
personal growth.Toys will also be donated to disadvantaged children at
individual branches throughout the county. “Placing
toys in the hands of children who may not receive another during the holiday
season fills all YMCAs of San Diego County with a beautiful spirit and an
unending goodwill,” said Richard Collato, president and CEO, YMCA of San Diego
County. “Caring, Honesty, Respect and Responsibility are the four core values
of the YMCA. It’s through events and programs like the Toy Drive that we help to instill those values
in young people that build healthy spirits, minds and bodies.” During the
