It uses visual art, language and movement to explore messages from our bodies. These messages present themselves in many forms, including tensions, numbness, and stress, as well as relaxation and joy. To access this information, therapists use listening, observing and guiding. The tools we draw from are based in the expressive arts. The messages are brought out into the external world through drawing, writing and movement.

Our first step is supporting each person's unique process. By supporting our bodies and their messages without judgement, we can then relax into a trusting relationship with ourselves and access the body's wisdom to help guide us in the world.

Another important and unique part of somatic expressive therapy is engaging the body’s natural support systems. To do this, we use movement, visualization and breathing techniques to activate the body’s relaxation and compassion response.
