WP Furigana is a little WordPress plugin that makes it a little easier to add Furigana (a Japanese reading aid of smaller kana printed next to a kanji). You can see how it works below.

It utilizes the HTML ruby tag which is widely supported, but includes a few improvements for certain browsers. Additionally, I have added a second button to the WordPress editor which helps you clean up orphaned elements.

There are a lot of browser plugins that users themselves can install to automatically add Furigana to text on websites (Furigana Injector), and other reading aids like Rikaichan/Rikaikun, but it’s up to the user to activate them. Automatic Furigana helpers also tend to have trouble with names.

Here’s Super Mario using only CSS3 box-shadow, neat eh?

I do realize that the leftmost “pixel” has a negative x value, don’t mind that, just a minor calculation mistake. As you can imagine by looking at the code below, I didn’t really want to go through it and change the values!

I can’t even imagine why this would be useful, but it was a fun little experiment :)

New Manga: Ikigami and Black Jack

Since finishing reading the amazing Old Boy manga, I’ve been on the hunt for some manga targeted for men my age. So I went to my nearest local manga shop and browsed around for a bit. After a while I ended up with the first volumes of Ikigami, which is new to me, and Black Jack, mostly to see what I’ve been missing out on.

I haven’t had the chance to read them yet, but I have high hopes for them! Especially Ikigami as it seems to be realistic, cruel and very exciting, just the way I like it.

If anyone of you have read them, I’d be very interested in hearing what you have to say about them. And what about Old Boy? Your cup of tea?

Mabanua – Done Already

Mabanua is a beat maker from Tokyo who’s been an artist pretty much all of his life. His music is soulful and jazzy, and sometimes quite trippy. He is perhaps more well-known for being a band member of a jazzy hip-hop band called Ovall, together with Shingo Suzuki and Shingo Sekiguchi.

Done Already is Mabanua’s first album, released in 2008. He has since then released a number of tracks and an album in 2012 called only the facts.

Anyways, I’m really fond of this album, so I thought I’d share it with you. If you have Spotify, you can listen to it directly below. I’ve also embedded a YouTube video at the bottom of this post.

Sheep Shearing by COCOSOLA

Here’s a fun little game called ひつじの毛をドゥルン (hitsuji no ke wo dourun) where your goal is to shear sheep, in a not so traditional fashion.

The sheep’s fur is connected to a machine by a rope, on the other end of the rope is a bucket, in which you need to put enough weight (in this case apples) for the sheep’s fur to come off. The apples fall from the sky and in order to get them into the bucket, you need to add wooden planks in the right places so the apples can bounce their way into it.

I highly doubt that shearing sheep this way would work, but hey, I’m no expert. Either way it’s a fun little puzzle game!

Sinitus Tempo – Haru

The latest addition to Sinitus Tempo’s discography is a new album called Haru (spring in Japanese). Like much of his other creations, Haru features a great selection of jazzy hip-hop beats, just the way I like it. Sinitus Tempo is totally owning my top artists charts on Last.fm now (last 12 months)!

My favorite tracks on this album are Wake Up and Together. It’s not my favorite album by Sinitus Tempo, but it’s great, like most of them.

Onra – Chinoiseries

It’s the beginning of the easter holidays and I’m continuing on my adventure of asian styled beats. This time we’re looking at Onra’s Chinoiseries, something that has been played countless of times after work and whenever I’ve had a couple of good Indian Pale Ales (hipster style!).

Onra is an amazing beatmaker. I guess I started listening to his beats in 2007 or 2008, with Tribute (Onra & Quetzal) being the first album. But I’ve really fallen for Chinoiseries, both part 1 and part 2.

My favorite tracks on Chinoiseries Pt 1 are Relax In Mui Ne, The Vallee Of Love, Take A Ride and Hope.

And on Chinoiseries Pt 2, Where I’m From and Warrior’s Pride.

Recently I’m hooked to Asian sounding hip-hop beats, particularly beats by Onra and Samon Kawamura. Thaima – Spur Of The Moment #1 is just one of the albums I’m really crazy about.

I like the whole album, but my favorites are Natty Fu Shake, Grandma’s Story, Peoples Song and Willow Weep. If you have listened to it, what are your favorites?

Figure Skating Queen

5 minutes of fun coming up! Figure Skating Queen (フィギュアの女王) is a tiny DDR-like game where you play as a figure skater. You earn points by swiping your finger in the direction of the sliding arrows, the amount of points you earn depends on how good your timing is.

A super simple game, but it kept me away from boredom for at least 5 minutes, so it’s better than nothing!
