As you all should know by now… RBA has increase the cash rate from 3% to 3.25%

Sometime this week you should expect banks to pass all and potentially more of this 0.25% interest rate rise…

Most bank’s fixed loans should be going into negative margins as the market interest rate swap (i.e. the instrument that we use to provide fix rate to consumers) is moving up too (i.e. costing more)  This just means you can expect fix rates to be moving upwards too!

Obviously, on top of fixed interest rates going up the variable rate will definitely be heading upwards. Historically, the RBA don’t usually do single rate rise or rate drops. So since the RBA has announced the rate rise the market has kindly priced in about 50-75 basis points more in the next 3 months.

One thing to note is that you will be expecting competitive deposit rates in the market in the near future as banks compete to attract depositors funds. Reason for this is because as the financial market stabilise, people start moving their bank deposits into other asset classes such as shares and property which means banks will have to fund more of their balance sheet from the very expensive money markets.

Hint: Make sure you have enough access cash over the near term to cover for the increase in interest repayments!!

One of the biggest oversight by Apple with the recent Snow Leopard upgrade has got to be this (in my opinion). The first thing I noticed when after launching my address book at the start was that it took a very long time to populate the contacts. I rebooted a few times and the same thing happened…

The problem is that the smart group appears to no longer allow smart groups to do filters by on the category ‘Group’… I previously had a smart group for all contacts that I didn’t have in an ordinary group.

The solution is relatively simple…

just delete this smart group!

Most small business are built on the same business model and hence have the same profit drivers. when thinking about small business strategy, small businesses all have certain key similarities.

• Customers
• Goods/Services
• Cost of Goods/Services

Before thinking about strategy to attract more customers customers we need to understand the two main drivers which leads to a customer.

1. How many people know about your business and the good/services that you provide?
2. How many of them can you attract to become your customers?

once a small business has acquired a customer, the obvious next step is how much money do we make from this customer. To understand this we need to understand the two drivers of revenue or gross income.

1. How much does the good/services sell for?
2. How many good/services does the customer buy?

Another way of seeing this is:

1. How much value in a basket of good/services?
2. How many times does the customer purchase in a given period?

In short, to find out how much revenue is generated per customer we need to know how much and how many.

Lastly, once a small business finds out how much revenue each customer is bringing for the business they need to understand their cost of acquiring the customer, goods/services. The driver for this is:

1. Profit Margin

Obviously the higher the better, but businesses in certain industry group or businesses that sell certain type of goods/services will tend to have different margin. auto-manufacturers have lower margins compared to online business selling ebooks.

Summary
The five key drivers to small business profits are:

1. Leads
2. Conversion
3. Revenue per Transaction
4. Number of Transactions
5. Profit Margins

Finally managed to get hold of TNT and installed Snow Leopard Upgrade yesterday night. Decided to take a screenshot of the actual amount of space I actually end up saving after installing the Snow Leopard upgrade… so below is the ‘before’ picture.

What’s strange is the final disk usage actually went up. Anyways, its kind of strange if you ask me, seems like they effectively freed up some misallocation of space or something. I have no idea, but this is my two cents worth without doing much research onto this topic. End of the day, i’m happy because I got ~10GB back from the upgrade and things seems to run faster. That said, i’ll write another post with stuff that didn’t work quite well at the start and tips and tricks that I had to do to get around it.

PS: I noticed the screen capture was a lot brighter… they most probably changed some display setting to make it more bright and it really helps with my external monitor! wished they figured this out when they made the software. (better late than never)
