    Hero Kyle helps fly the forces flag

    Hero Kyle Baker remembered his friends who did not come back from Afghanistan as the flag wasHer raised over Coleford to mark Armed Forces Day.

    The Sedbury soldier, who is recovering after being shot shortly after being posted to the war zone, was a guest of honour at the ceremony.

    The 18-year-old serves with Edinburgh based 3 Rifles which has suffered the heaviest casualties in the conflict.

    The former district council street warden knew many of the 30 soldiers who died during 3 Rifles six-month tour of duty.

    Afterwards he said such ceremonies were important to help people understand the sacrifices being made by the Armed Forces and their families.

    During the ceremony he recalled the men he trained with who never came back.

    “When you lose people in Afghanistan it takes a while to register,” said the teenage Rifleman.

    “It’s good to have five minutes, to stop and think of mates who paid the ultimate sacrifice and celebrate what they did.

    “It’s important for civilians to know the sacrifices people are making. Every day somebody gets killed, but unless it’s somebody from the local community, it gets overlooked.”

    Five buglers from the Beachley-based 1Rifles attended the ceremony at the district council offices in Coleford.

    Kyle’s family joined councillors, council staff and members of the public.

    Chairman of the council Coun Marrilyn Smart raised the flag which will fly until Saturday.

    She said: “This council will show its support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community – that includes those who are currently serving, their families, veterans and cadets.”
