“We” is a bit of a mis-statement.  EcoBabe is going GFCF.  We are implementing the change.

EcoBabe has ongoing gastro-intestinal issues.  I won’t be excessively graphic; I’ll just say that he’s got some persistent messy bowel issues that we’ve been unable to sort out or explain.

And there’s oodles of anecdotal evidence to suggest that a GFCF diet can help alleviate some of the symptoms of ASD.

So we’re giving it a go.  We’re eliminating all dairy as well as rye, oats, wheat, and barley.  The toughest part will be eliminating pasta, I think.  EcoBabe is a big fan of pasta but we don’t have many options for replacing it.  I did find some rice noodles at the supermarket which I hope he’ll enjoy in place of pasta.

Before we made the switch, EcoBabe was getting a lot of yogurt.  We were leaning on yogurt to round out his diet because he doesn’t drink milk.  But in researching the GFCF diet, I re-discovered what I already knew; non-dairy calcium sources provide calcium in forms readily taken up by the body.  Yup, spinach is one of the very best usable calcium sources there is.  And EcoBabe loves his spinach. 

I’m excitedly anticipating new recipes and new foods for EcoBabe.  Our access to certain grains (quinoa, amaranth, etc) is very limited in Turkey so we’re working with what we’ve got.  I’m tracking down recipes for gluten-free pasta and am eager to give pasta-making a go.

For his part, EcoBabe has been eagerly gobbling up his tofu and slurped up his soy milk with fervour this morning.  Let’s hope the diet helps resolve some of his issues!

I know that some of you, dear readers, have children on GFCF diets.  If you have any super recipes you’d like to share, I’d love to have them.

We haven’t received a  package since September 30th.  There are packages that have been en route to us since late August that haven’t arrived.  In total, we are waiting on 9 packages that are between 6 weeks and 2 months late in arriving.  This includes birthday gifts for EcoKid.  Birthday gifts for me.

It’s really, really frustrating.  We’ve contacted the post office.  They claim to have nothing.  But the packages are coming from four different countries; it seems highly unlikely that all nine went missing simultaneously in various corners of the globe (the argument that the PTT is giving us.)

That’s right, they only want to deal with us in terms of ‘lost packages.’  To me, it seems pretty clear that our packages are being stopped from delivery, not that they’ve ALL just HAPPENED to have gotten lost.

But the PTT won’t talk to us.  Not unless we want to deal in terms of barcodes for individually ‘lost’ packages.

Sooo… if you were planning on mailing us anything for Christmas, please don’t.   I doubt it will get to us.  The great abyss called the PTT will eat it.

And if you’ve sent us something and I haven’t thanked you, this means I haven’t received it.  I ALWAYS send thanks.  So please don’t think I’m being rude!

So EcoKid and I have been working away at her party pinata to use with her little friends on Sunday when she celebrates with them.  And she has been ‘helping’ me sew her special birthday dress (in Olivia the Pig fabric.)  And we’ve be acquiring the supplies for birthday cake, icing, and things to go in the pinata.  And she ‘helped’ me sew little party favour bags for each of her four little friends coming on Sunday.

However, I think that while EcoKid appreciates all this activity surrounding her birthday, the thing she’s most enjoyed is opening birthday gifts as they arrive for her in the mail.  She’s had gifts trickling in for the past few days; getting gifts by mail is a fun part of being an expat kid!

Today might have been the jewel in EcoKid’s little birthday crown.  Her Uncle Ray and Auntie Bev sent her a parcel with a really amazing, super cool, oh-so-princessy…

That’s right folks, she had to sleep with it.  She. Had. To. Sleep. With. It.

What you can’t see in the photo is the front of the card; three Disney princesses and lots of glitter.  Princesses and glitter are, like, the biggest things in this girl’s life right now.  (I know, I can’t actually believe she’s MY daughter sometimes either.)

And for the record, her Auntie Di and Uncle Guy sent her a princess card too.  It also was slept with.  For a week.  I just wasn’t brave enough to turn the light on and get a photo!

And now, as her Mummy, I have to try to top a the joy of princess birthday cards on her big day… I don’t have anything glittery or princessy in my pocket…

I’m also too tired to say more than this… it’s almost midnight which is WAAAAY past my bedtime; I’ve been trying to get the shop up and running.  And I’ve suceeded!  More necklaces to appear in the shop in the near future.  And I hope to have photos of them on actual people soon too; it gives a better idea of the way the necklace falls, you know?
