It’s hard to believe, but Dodger Stadium—that minimalist monument of mid-century modernity two miles from LA City Hall—is now in its 52nd season. It is now the oldest ballpark west of the Mississippi, second-oldest in the National League, and third-oldest in the majors. For most of its history, it has quietly carried on unchanged, drawing record full-season crowds. Ownership transitions brought some alterations in 2005, and now, with yet another group of owners, it is in the eighth inning of a $100-million-plus makeover. _____ A New Park for St. Patrick

St. Patrick’s Island, which sits at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow rivers in the center of Calgary, Alberta, is on the cusp of a major redevelopment that will return it to its 19th century roots as a public park. The Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) and the City of Calgary recently broke ground on a redesign of the site completed by New York City–based W-Architecture and Landscape Architecture and Denver-based urban planning and landscape architecture firm Civitas. The revitalized public space is scheduled to open in the fall of 2014.

For all of human's existence we have lived in a shelter or home and in almost everyone there has been furniture and if it be simple or detailed it was still there. So in the present we look at the trend of furnishings and they are truly still crucial to making a space important pop, jaw dropping it is this effect that makes it such a popular part of society. In today's issue we look at furniture, well more talk about for that matter. (The pictures I was finding were not what I was looking for in this issue) But never the less we power on. The art of shapes

Founded in 1940, Rigidized Metals specializes in rolled metals with deep-set patterns. These highly textured surfaces are created with the help of three massive rolling machines, each of which weighs nearly 40 tons. According to the company, they know of only one other machine of that size and capability in North America, and it is put to use for industrial products, such as tread plates. Though metal is often regarded as a tough material, Rigidized sees steel, aluminum, copper, and brass as materials that can be manipulated as easily as textiles or leather. The new noise canceling ceiling

For a 700-seat concert hall at the new School of Music at the University of Iowa, Seattle-based LMN Architects wanted to design a high-performing ceiling canopy that would unify the many features of traditional theatrical and acoustic systems. The result is a 150-foot-long by 70-foot-wide surface composed of 946 suspended, intricately laced panels that incorporate complex, interdependent, and at times conflicting systems—including lighting, theatrics, speakers, sprinklers, and acoustical functionality—in a unified architectural gesture. _____Midtown Rezone=Public Space?

Last summer, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s administration announced plans to rezone a 78-block area of East Midtown. While the proposal is designed to strengthen the Central Business District (CBD) around Grand Central with a new crop of modern office buildings, it has also yielded a number of recommendations for public realm improvements that could enliven Midtown’s notoriously cramped streets. In late March, at the request of Community Board 5, the Department of City Planning provided sketches of specific urban design features—from planting areas to wayfinding—to illustrate how the area might look in the future. _____ Windy City to get a New Tower

The empty lot at 130 North Franklin Street, a prominent location that was once home to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange, is set to be the site of a 48-story office tower designed by Krueck + Sexton. The building, clad in a faceted all-glass curtain wall, will be the Chicago firm’s largest hometown project to date and will tower above its neighbors. “For the last 10 years this has been surface parking just waiting for an opportunity for development,” said firm principal Mark Sexton.

TWA flight center a 60s mainstay.

AMC has widely popular programming and the one of those is Mad Men, set in the 1960s in Manhattan at a powerful Ad agency the show pulls viewers from all crowds with its genius writing, historic references, fashion, the world of advertising and you guessed it Architects the show is pure Midcentury and every set every building is spot on, The show popular for all these reasons but it really shows how many people find the times of the 1960s so interesting that they would spend every Sunday in it. The nostalgia the show gives off is unparalleled to anything else and I would encourage anyone who wants to be wowed to check it out as it really has something for everyone.

How does this relate to the wonderful world of Architecture?

When I look at things I try to see everything for a point of view in which I would like, something we all do that being said, I do have a tendency to bend the rules between what I feel is "Architecture". But I enjoy thinking like that its refreshing. So when I saw these wonderful lamps in New York Magazine Wondered how does this relate? then I saw my point of view in these amazing lamps above they all display one thing the are different they make you smile they truly make a room. The same can be said for buildings and design stand out be different give a good impression. So truly even the smallest things the things probably sitting right next to you even, can hold some rules to the greatest design. YA

San Fran's New Arena

The building’s curving exterior features ramped decks that double as a waterfront balcony for pedestrians. The architects also released an image of the basketball arena itself, which now features a large window with views of the Bay Bridge. Plus, we hear, the roof will be decked out with programmable LEDs that can cycle through images and animations, Bay Lights–style.
Projecting the modesty that only a 13-acre sports venue can, the updated design is a little smaller and more mindful of pedestrians. The architects lowered the height of the event center by 10 feet and reduced its size by 43,000 square feet. Dutch design firm West 8 has created a sustainable masterplan to transform an urban center in China into an ecologically sound city. Called Guangzhou Huadi Fangcun, or the Flower City, the plan fuses wetland areas with the fabric of the metropolis. The plan is the winning entry in a contest issued by the local government to redevelop the site into a progressive urban area that ensures a clean and environmentally sound place to live. _____Push for rethink of Madison Square Garden

A growing chorus of civic groups, critics, and now public officials are calling for an ambitious rethinking of Pennsylvania Station and Madison Square Garden. At issue is the lease for the Garden, which is up for renewal. That decision will determine the future of Midtown as well as the quality of the commute for millions of transit riders. The Dolan family, which owns and operates the Garden, wants a permanent renewal. That would be a colossal mistake. Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer is pushing for a 10-year renewal, during which time a masterplan could be developed for Midtown, including the redevelopment of Penn Station and the relocation of Madison Square Garden. Stringer’s reasonable plan acknowledges the importance of the Garden while also allowing for the development of better alternatives for an improved Penn Station and a new arena.

What you seen when you look twice

Give this picture the old "double take" what did you see?

When you come across anything, you first look at it and truly try to dissect it in your mind. But what happens when you look twice? You may just see things in a whole new light. Look at a magazine cover for example, you may see the featured story and picture but look twice, maybe you will see other featured stories, maybe another picture or maybe how much you paid for it! This fact can be looked at in many ways. But through the concept of looking at a building you can sometimes get a whole slew of new info when you look again you may see a ceiling style and detail in the lighting or maybe an overall feel the architect wants to communicate to you, So go on look again you may be surprised with what you see.

Windows 8 is a version of Microsoft Windows (an operating system developed by Microsoft) for use on personal computers, including home and business desktops, laptops, tablets, and home theater PCs. Development of Windows 8 started before the release of its predecessor, Windows 7, in 2009. I've put these two pictures together so you can get an idea of how simple this system is. It was truly based on architecture and layouts the start screen which is the base of the new Windows 8 world has the look of a city block. It is this design which windows calls "Metro" the look which has been a hit or miss with some has been the base for Windows 8. I think that it is really amazing how architecture and tech come together in some many interesting a creative ways, that could be one of the coolest parts of architecture because it simply has no boundaries. Although the reviews for the new system and devices is very much mixed, the concept shows that windows still has some fight and creativity in them, and that says alot about a company that isn't afraid too be different or make mistakes, much like jcpenney's new ad campaign saying "we made some mistakes but we have learned" if that is all Microsoft is able to get from this than in my opinion they will be a well respected and successful company in my eyes. YA

The new addition that might risk it all

One of the buildings that might be demolished

Next month LACMA will publicly unveil a $650-million plan by Pritzker Prize winner Peter Zumthor for a dramatic new museum building along Wilshire Boulevard.

If completed it would rank as one of the most significant works of architecture to rise in Los Angeles since Frank Gehry's Walt Disney Concert Hall opened 10 years ago. It would also require demolishing the core of the museum's campus, including the original 1965 buildings by William L. Pereira and a 1986 addition by Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates of New York. in São Paulo or Rio.

Copenhagen-based firm Henning Larsen Architects recently unveiled these renderings for Microsoft's HQ in Denmark, a four-acre masterplan of mid-rise structures Arch Daily calls "state-of-the-art, yet modest." Yes, only in the realm of Silicon Valley giants, where office spaces oft involve things like neon lights, orange groves, rolling rooftop parks, and olive orchards, is a shiny sprawl as large as this considered downright—nay, refreshingly—subdued.

_____West Loop's future

Chicago architect Scott Sarver looks at the West Loop and sees the future. And his firm, smdp, certainly isn’t the first or the only one to predict some sort of critical mass for the bevy of high-tech office developments that have made hay with the neighborhood’s central location, real estate momentum, and newfound cultural cachet.

In cooperation with developer Fifield Companies, Sarver and his firm have fleshed out a masterplan that calls for 10 million square feet of new office space in the West Loop in 10 years. The plan also calls for a 10-to-15-acre park covering the trench of the Kennedy Expressway, which forms a barrier between the West Loop and downtown. Alan Schachtman, executive vice president of Fifield, called this hypothetical green a Millennium Park for the West Loop.

Almost every U.S. college campus has a midcentury modernist building that turns architectural agnostics into either denouncers or defenders of brutalism. HGA Architects and Engineers’ rehabilitation of the Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota, is further proof that these institutional buildings can stage successful second acts.

Buildings that you never forget

Northpark mall Dallas, TX

When someone tells me of something happening, one of the first things I ask is where? It is this question and the immediate answer that begins to spark my thinking. If they say Dallas I picture the location of it then I think of the magnificent Northpark Mall. It is this very way of thinking that any architect would dream to have his/her building be the first thing you think of. But what is it that truly keeps you coming back to that building? It can be many things, but for me it is the architecture of the building what it looked like and what it left me with. So I think the best buildings that you can never forget are those that make you think the most and truly challenge you. It is this aspect that buildings have that truly capture you on a whole new level, making architecture truly great.

Layouts

Layout is a very important part all buildings, and in the movie theater seen its no different. All of these theaters feature a simple layout, consisting of a lobby, ticket booth and screens. These we made simple to make following them simple. They really have a great look to them and are very glassy open and clean-lined oriented. Putting all the focus on the movie. YA

A simple entrance featuring the all glass lobby, you also can notice that this theater is
small having only two screens.

Another two screens cinema entrance notice how the lobby connects with the screens based
on how the two roofs meet.

Another look at a cinema building I really like this over hang and how the lobby ceiling and walls are designed.

Probably one of my favorite layouts I love the daring curves of the building how the lobby reaches both sides and the massive overhang out front. Giving this two screen cinema an amazing looks.

Design

A quick look at the design of these buildings at first only makes you think of dated and run down, but upon closer inspection you can see the simple design and bold color chosen to match them. Below look these and the great photos and these simple designs. YA

The only reason I have this picture is because I really like the cup and popcorn box design,
shows a great look of the style of the times.

The seating area with signature and striking red chairs the simple
stacked ceilings are noticeable.

The cinema is noticeable in this minimall as you can see the how simple and not like the mega
movie theaters we have now.

The lobby is seen here through the glass it has a textured wall above and a simple
look giving it a brillant look.

Another lobby with red carpets and various sized orange lights this lobby is a key example of 70's design and of the simple mixed with bold look.

In this lobby so things to notice: the ashtrays, red and maroon color scheme, that art
displays for moviegoers, that amazing various sized lights and the glass walls.

The rise and fall of GCC

General Cinema Corporation which was founded in 1935 and its peak in operated 621 screens and were some of the first theaters to be approved by THX the company the original national movie theater brand and eventually filed chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2002 and was purchased by AMC, The company and its brand will forever mark the movie theater experience of that time and paved the way for the experience we have now. YA

#1 PF Changs chinese bistro

Main floor of restaurant, best part of this restaurant is the ceiling especially the light fixtures.

This pictures shows mainly the great wallpaper with the chinese theme played throughout

Another look at the dining area the light fixtures are simply amazing.

A look at the bar area of a restaurant I really think the wood tones are perfect for the space.

#2 Legal Seafoods

Bar area the ceiling is truly brillant with the nautical theme apparent.

In this image the stained-glass light fixture is perfect fot the space.

The wine is a great way to design a space.

The light fixture is very Frank Lloyd Wright its amazing.

#3 Magginao's Little Italy

The interior consists of white and red checkered table cloths and dark wood walls a very good mix.

The overall design here just screams italian.

We see here how the restaurant seems causal yet fancy.

Here we see the simple type of lights and the pops of red.

#4 Fogo de Chao

The murals are great here the set a true tone for the atmosphere.

The ceiling here has a layered look to it that is simply amazing.

Again the color tone and ceilings in these spaces are just great.

#5 Spin Pizza

A look at the menu board with simple displays.

Here you see the entrance space which has wine displayed at the door.

Healthy Looking Hospitals

Often the place people least want to be

Hospital and all healthcare buildings for that matter, are places that many would rather not be. But here we see an outpatient facility in UCLA and The Methodist Hospital Research Institute in Houston, TX. That embrace there use location and breakout of the stereotypical hospital design concept. I really appreciate how these buildings are using strong materials and are trying to really trying to make an impression on all those who enter.

CLASSY, CLEAN AND CONTEMPORARY

This is how I describe this amazing building. below are some pictures of the building and a couple blueprints of the facility. courtesy archrecord.com.

Street-view level view of the building you can see the lobby clearly the entrence resembles an airport almost. I have to say the simple sleek look makes any visit here probably not as bland as others would be.

The lobby featuring a clean design, also notice the wide staircase to the left, it really has a great view of the lobby and the street.

Second floor common area which has a small opening to the lower level I really like this look because it really highlights the size of the windows, the view and the overall space you are in.

Ground floor level, notice how the lobby connects with all.

A shot of the 7th floor, here you get an idea of the normal layout and of the actual size of the curved front.

MODERN, SIMPLE AND FUNCTIONAL

This is my true opinion of the building, notice the use of nature and how the building is practical and beautiful. Below are some pictures of the building and a couple blueprints. courtesy archrecord.com.

2nd floor a small building but they really use the space to the max.

Side-view of the building the building is complex but efficient at the same time.

1st floor really incorporates the outside nicely I really appreciate the looking and layout.

Outside look of the building the glass courtyard is obvious as the trees scattered about.

A waiting area, I have to say the best part of this building is the ceiling hands down.

A patient area the area is light airy and very sterile, making patients very comfortable.

Another shot of the waiting area very simple and clean, just how a healthcare building should be.

A look at the lobby not huge but uses its space wisely and I really like the stairs the are open and really making the climb worth it!

In the midcentury Kmart was all that they had new concepts and stores around the country, with concepts very revolutionary such as K-chef and Kmart gas, they were unstoppable. Enter Target the new "it" store, with sleek looking and stylish stores the wow everyone becoming #1. So today I am going to look at these two stores and see what they have in common and how style can really make or break a store.

1) Apple headquarters in the same city and near first location this circle shaped building will be the new world headquarters for Apple soon.

2) Freedom Tower or Tower 1 at the World Trade Center in New York City, is very close to completion and will be a beacon to the future of America.

How Malls Work

The Dallas Galleria. Featuring a center court with a ice skating rink

Malls- During this time are some of the busiest places right now. So I decided to look at what most have and what the need to be successful.

Anchor store while some malls don't have them the most successful ones do, they are also know as department store, movie theaters, or sometimes entertainment venues.

Center Court large areas with stores looking in on them featuring displays, sitting areas and sometimes entertainment areas.

Food Court center where food stalls are in and having a sitting area for people to eat these areas need a large amount of foot traffic for them to be busy and profitable.

Stores the very reason for the mall these bring much of the foot traffic and can be very profitable.

Layouts-

Luxury mall in Northpark mall Dallas with a park in the middle

Anchor Store-A large store in a shopping center, usually is a highly visible store that is a destination for shoppers. Anchors help draw consumer traffic to a mall.

Shops at Willow Bend- This gives you an idea what an anchor mall entrence looks like.

Store-Usually a store that belongs to part of a large regional or national chain. A store usually will construct it's own format storefront when it moves into a mall. You can find stores in most thriving malls.

Bath and Body Works which is a main staple of most shopping malls.

Food courts

Mall of America food court also an main staple of larger and less upscale malls.

Selfridges More Than Just A Store

Selfridges & Co, which is a chain of department stores in the United Kingdom. Founded in 1909 on London's Oxford street (pictured above). Other notable stores are Trafford, Greater Manchester (1998), Exchange Square (2002) and Bullring Birmingham (2003). Ive chosen to focus on this company because they have a very unique and creative approach to all of its locations and each locations seems to have different looks and feels to them.

Bullring Store

This store known for its interestiong shape and building facade. The store which opened in 2003 and since then has become somewhat of a landmark. It was also said that it has helped bring to the regeneration of Birmingham. Designed by the architecture firm Future Systems. The goal was for the store to be set apart from the Bullring shopping center so the building could be a iconic signpost for the brand. The building has a curved facade which features over 15,000 aluminin discs which can br seen on the left.
