This figure is significantly more than Facebooks’ 0.77% and Twitters’ 0.69%. They provide a few tips for leveraging your business’ social, such as growing you network with quality contacts rather than quantitiy. <div>In an aggressive move to turn public opinion against Google&#8217;s new ‘Search Plus Your World’ algorithm change, Facebook, Twitter and other social media engineers teamed up to produce a browser add-on that changes the Google’s SERPs to include results from other social networks. The bookmarklet, named ‘Don’t Be Evil”, is Facebook and Twitters response to Googles corporate code of conduct that states they must focus on doing what’s best for the user, rather than what is best for the company. The ‘Search Plus Your World’ change is a blatant push towards increased engagement with Google+, and it will be interesting to see if Google look to incorporate other soical networks at some stage. <div>In a two year study conducted by Revtrax, a marketing analytics platform, results have shown that for every $1 of e-commerce revenue generated from the ads, retailers could expect another $6 of instore revenue. The study analyzed consumer purchases from a paid search ad. Consumers were presented with an advertisement that, when clicked, led to a printable or mobile landing page displaying a coupon with a unique barcode and online coupon code. Each unique barcode was tracked back to the search activity that drove the conversion. Segment your list into similar groups and send emails to subscribers which the email pertains to, people will likely unsubscribe when bombarded with information that doesn&#8217;t relate to them. Offer your subscribers alternatives to email. Not everyone enjoys emails filling up their inbox, so offer an RSS feed, link to your blog or your social networking sites, let them choose how to recieve information. Make sure your emails load quickly, people don’t have time to sit and wait for a large email to load, they’ll simply delete yours and move on, or worse they’ll get sick of waiting and unsubscribe. What is interesting to note is this quote from Masahable: “Reddit’s growth is especially remarkable given the site’s lack of reliance on SEO, Facebook and Twitter. <p>Esther Goh is the web editor at <a href="http://idealog.co.nz/" target="_blank">Idealog</a>, the magazine and website for New Zealand creative business, ideas and innovation and is one of the largest circulating business titles in the country. Esther was previously a news editor at <a href="http://www.nzherald.co.nz/" target="_blank">nzherald.co.nz</a>, and has contributed to a range of print and online publications, including the Western Leader, Whakatane Beacon, Verve, Cafe Philosophy, slynkey.com, varsity.co.nz, and nzgirl.co.nz, basically mean she&#8217;s seen and written about it all and has some incredible insights into the world of digital media.</p>
<p><strong><em><em></em></em>What digital changes this year have you really loved?</strong></p>
<p>Tools to help navigate the overwhelming amount of content on social networks. Think the likes of <a href="http://summify.com/" target="_blank">Summify</a> and <a href="http://flipboard.com/" target="_blank">Flipboard</a> &#8211; curation upon curation. You can&#8217;t read everything that&#8217;s shared (nor would you want to) but that FOMO (fear of missing out) can be soothed with some technical help.</p>
<p><strong>What new tools do you think won&#8217;t catch on?</strong></p>
<p>Anything overly complex. Don&#8217;t try to do everything; keep it simple and do one thing well. If you can&#8217;t sum up your core proposition in one or two sentences, don&#8217;t expect us to pore over it trying to understand it. We want to know what you do and why it&#8217;s going to make our lives exponentially better. And if it doesn&#8217;t make my life easier&#8230; well, I don&#8217;t need any more distractions.</p>
<p><strong>What’s the biggest challenge for people (both consumers and agencies) to embrace digital marketing?</strong></p>
<p>Creating a cohesive strategy across platforms. Not jumping on every new thing &#8211; yes, keeping up with new tools and constant change, but not deviating from the overarching goal.</p>
<p>For consumers, it&#8217;s about compelling, genuine and relevant campaigns. There&#8217;s so much noise that it&#8217;s easy to ignore marketing messages in an age of increasing personalisation.</p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s your favorite digital campaign at the moment and why do you think it&#8217;s a success?</strong></p>
<p>The <a href="http://www.rightthisminute.com/video/stay-night-steal-art" target="_blank">Stay the Night, Steal the Art</a> campaign is great, in which Australia&#8217;s Art Series Hotels challenged people to find and steal a Banksy painting doing the rounds of its branches. <a href="https://twitter.com/stealbanksy" target="_blank">@stealbanksy</a> tweeted hints, updates and failed attempts, and the full story/videos of the first successful heist are showcased on the <a href="http://www.artserieshotels.com.au/" target="_blank">hotel&#8217;s website</a>. It&#8217;s fresh and dynamic and really plays into that subversive Banksy philosophy.</p>
<p>I also enjoyed Air NZ&#8217;s recent take on <a href="https://byebyerico.com/" target="_blank">Cluedo</a> &#8211; it was sticky, well-executed and a nice example of gamification. Everyone knows the classic whodunnit board game, and turns out it translated well into the digital realm.</p>

HubSpot have seen how easy it is to get wrong and have produced an article outlining 7 commonly made mistakes and easy solutions to remedy them. The first mistake was not having the blog integrated with the company website, this is the worst in my opinion (as an SEO). You lose a huge amount of keywords, views and most importantly, if someone were to link to your blog your business’ website, you wouldn’t gain the link. Publishing to much information pertaining to your own business is also a mistake. Your readers will get bored quickly and see your blog as simply an advertisement, try and write more educational or thought provoking content, relevant to your industry. <div>The Gamification.co blog has presented three ways to get over the commuter blues with these gamified apps and programs. The first implementation is a smartphone app called ‘Waze’ which incorporates crowdsourcing, location-based, and gamification and has become the top navigation app in Israel. Game mechanics encourage drivers to head down roads that don;t have traffic and road conditions and to report their findings back to the app. Other drivers can consult the app to see the most efficient route of travel. Another use of gamification is in new Ford vehicles which provides a visual representation of how efficient you’re driving the car, encouraging you to save gas. Sensors around the car send data (rain, traffic and fuel levels) to the program which processes it and calculates fuel efficiency and exports it into a graph. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Scandinavian Airlines has managed to bust through the block that all travel companies face with their recent campaign, Couple Up to Buckle Up.</p>
<p><strong>The Idea</strong></p>
<p>Scandinavian Airlines created an offer that required couples to be together to actually redeem. The offer was a 2 for 1 deal on a European getaway (a great offer, we&#8217;d like to mention) that they sent out to 100,000 selected members via email. The message contained two QR codes that, once scanned on two phones, played two videos that only made sense when played together. The video(s) provided the couple with a combined voucher code to use when booking their trip.</p>
<p>To be honest, the whole thing makes more sense if you watch the video below.</p>

<p>Pretty neat, huh?</p>
<p><strong>Why it works</strong></p>
<p>For almost everyone in the travel industry, the biggest barrier to entry has always been the need to check with one&#8217;s partner. This campaign (care of CP+B) makes this a nonissue.</p>
<p>The beauty in this campaign was its requirement for the couple to actually be together, putting theme in the prime position to buy the tickets then and there. No faffing about, no phone calls, text messaging and email back-and-forths you inevitably make when planning a trip to get in the way of purchase.</p>
<p>Plus, everyone knows by now that video works better than almost any medium when it comes to digital so incorporating a sort of romantic, inspiring video of a couple on holiday is just a really easy way for customers to say, &#8220;Yup, I want that now.&#8221;<br />

An example of this is Bing&#8217;s Jingle campaign, which asked followers of their social media channels to create a Jingle for the chance to win US$500 American Express gift cheque. <h3>Google&#8217;s Integration Of Google+ Into Search Results</h3>

<div>Google has increased integration of Google+ in the search results, attempting to make Google+ more relevant and providing social signals for the user. Google is launching three new features; Personal Results, Profiles in Search and People and Pages. Personal Results show information that you have shared to the internet, such as pictures you may have uploaded or websites you have shared that pertain to your search query. Profiles in Search are somewhat self-explanatory, they put Google+ profiles in the SERPs. The key thing here is that they appear first in the rankings, which means having a well optimised Google+ profile page is important for SEO. The final change is People and Pages. This adds a column down the right-hand side of the search results which contains Google+ profiles and brand pages relevant to your search term. <h3>Top Brands On Twitter In 2011</h3>

<div>HootSuite have produced an infographic detailing the top brands of Twitter in 2011. They produced the list based on mentions in Tweets, not the total number of followers. Twitter itself is number one on the list with nearly 50,000 points, next on 19,000 points is Google. Playstation is a strange case, listed at number fourteen, as it had a lot of negative mentions on social media due to its hacking and subsequent downtime of the Playstation Network. The only non-tech companies to make the list were McDonalds, Nissan and Wal-mart who have very successful social media campaigns. <p><strong>What digital changes this year have you really loved?</strong></p>
<p>Since I work in news media my focus has been on digital developments in this area, and the world hasn’t disappointed this year. Everyone is experimenting, from semi-porous paywalls like <em>The New York Times</em> to splitting your site into paid and unpaid versions like <em>The Boston Globe</em>. There are subscriptions for tablet apps, improved audience and location targeting for advertiser supported news, and Facebook integrated apps from organisations like<em> The Guardian</em>.</p>
<p>I can’t pass digital change without highlighting we’ve finally reached the tipping point for mobile. Now more people buy smartphones than feature phones. Mobile traffic is skyrocketing. This growth isn’t at the expense of traditional web but is a great additional user touchpoint if you do it right. It&#8217;s an incredibly exciting roller-coaster to be on.</p>
<p>There is no silver bullet or one solution for monetising digital news. Even in print there have always been multiple revenue streams and each media company has their own secret sauce. What’s fascinating is watching everyone experiment in the kitchen.</p>
<p><strong>What new tools do you think won&#8217;t catch on?</strong></p>
<p>Highly-financed digital pure plays. Many of these are being built around social or location, such as <a href="http://www.oink.com/" target="_blank">Oink</a> (which is like FourSquare for topics and things rather than locations). The problem with these is that as user behaviour consolidates around profile-driven platforms, if you’re not part of a site with audience media time spent on it, you’re going to be ignored. Google is a great example of this as even they recognise they need to be a platform, not just a one-trick pony if they expect to dominate the next decade.</p>
<p>And of course I’m going to go with anything that doesn’t make your life easier. If I have to do something to get a reward or service, it better be the most amazing thing ever. I’m busy and lazy, and so is everyone else.</p>
<p><strong>What’s the biggest challenge for people (both consumers and agencies) to embrace digital marketing?</strong></p>
<p>In any disrupted or fast-moving market the biggest challenge will always be education. Technology such as digital formats and devices are evolving so quickly the infrastructure built into the advertising world can’t keep up. Fear and uncertainty around results mean that opportunities are being wasted in exchange for safe and comfortable old executions that won’t get anyone fired, but won’t produce the results more innovative solutions can.</p>
<p>And on the research and analytics side there are additional challenges like relying on ineffective metrics such as clicks (they might as well be counting hits) and not measuring the conversions, brand metrics and ROIs that matter.</p>
<p><strong>What&#8217;s your favourite digital campaign at the moment and why do you think it&#8217;s a success?</strong></p>
<p>The Tesco Home Plus supermarket chain in Korea has a brilliant <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/mobile-phones/8601147/Tesco-builds-virtual-shops-for-Korean-commuters.html" target="_blank">digital campaign</a>. In subway stations they have walls covered with pictures of their store aisles and all the products have QR codes commuters can scan and add to their cart. When they’re done shopping they click to purchase and the groceries are delivered to their door right after they get home.</p>
<p>This does everything right, which is why it&#8217;s so effective. The problem in Korea was not enough time to shop, so Tesco jumped on the fact that everyone carries mobile devices. They understood a key time to use mobile is waiting in queues like for trains and buses. By putting need, opportunity and execution together they hit the magic button of making the lives of their customers easier. And that kind of campaign will always be a big winner.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The general consensus in the office when watching the video was a collective &#8220;Awwwwww!&#8221; This idea from the little Swiss mountain town of Obermutten is as clever as it is quaint.</p>
<p><strong>The Idea</strong></p>
<p>The mayor of Obermutten promised all Facebook fans that if they liked the town&#8217;s <a href="http://de-de.facebook.com/obermutten" target="_blank">Facebook page</a> their photo would be posted on the community notice board. The page is already at 15,000 fans with (apparently) more engagement per fan than Lady Gaga and Coke. The media coverage surrounding Obermutten is nothing we&#8217;ve ever seen for such a small community &#8211; all because they literally value each and every one of their fans. Every week they print and post fan photographs on the notice board, which quickly filled up and is now overtaking the side of a barn and has become a whole town project.</p>

<p><strong>Why It Works</strong></p>
<p>The perfection in this idea is that it fully embraces the <em>social</em> aspect of social media (go figure). Cities across the globe are building up a social presence, but none as small (80 inhabitants) and previously unknown as Obermutten. Which makes this success story one of those jaw-on-the-floor sort of tales.</p>
<p>Hundreds of tourists have now descended on Obermutten because the town has not only created a tourist attraction from scratch, but because they visit the village much like one would visit a friend. Fans now have a connection with the town are truly part of it&#8217;s community.</p>
<p>The Obermutten page succeeded so easily by holding to their promise, responding to all questions/comments and creating an online community exactly like the one in real life: tight-knit.<br />

<div>StumbleUpon have had a complete redesign of their assets, with a new logo, toolbar and website the key changes. The stumble toolbar has been reskinned to look more sleek, with a simplistic black design. Brands and personalities now have the ability to create a YouTube like channel in which followers can see what webpages the brands have liked. It does seem as though these brands may just use this to promote their own interests sending users to pages they themselves own, but we will have to wait and see. <div>A study released by New York SEO &amp; SaaS agency Conductor, has highlighted the importance of optimising your page for long tail keywords, with the results showing that on page optimisation of long tail keywords can improve your search engine optimisation more than head keywords. Long-tail optimised pages moved on average 6 places more in the rankings than head keyword optimised pages.  The study also reviewed the conversion rates of head vs. long tail keywords,long tail keywords converted 26% of the time while head keywords converted 10% of the time, unsurprisingly, long tail keywords far outperformed the head keywords. <div>Google Analytics is to add reporting for social metrics. This means Analytics would track the following web properties Google social products like Google+, Blogger, and Google Groups. There are a number od other services that are also working with Google to provide support. such Delicious, Digg, ReadItLater, Reddit and TypePad. There doesn’t seem to be any word yet on whether Facebook or Twitter will be implemented, and these are the two giants of the social media world we’ll be waiting on.
