The culprit of such a magnitude of screaming, squawking and mimicking of all variety of sounds, is usually a pet parrot that wants your attention!

Parrots have fascinated us throughout the years due to their high intelligence, gorgeous colors and adoring personalities that simply won't be ignored. Generations of parrot lovers insist that there is no better pet than a parrot. What parrot behaviors can prove difficult to deal with and what considerations do you need to take into account before deciding upon a parrot as a pet? Are certain types of parrots easier to handle and look after? A problem with identifying if your bird is sick is that birds tend to hide their health from you. This is a built in ability that birds use to keep other animals from attacking them. It is part of their survival instinct. Because of this ability it may be a couple of weeks before a bird owner even knows that his bird is sick. Therefore, in order to determine that there is a problem with your bird you have to be observant at all times.

Parrot Cages: A cage alone for a parrot can cost as much or more than the bird itself. Your parrot's cage needs to be kept clean, free from any potential hazards such as sharp points or objects and should be large enough for a few bird toys as well as room enough for your parrot to comfortably spread his wings. This means a large Macaw, Amazon or Cockatoo needs a giant sized cage.

Moderate Talkers To Those That Never Shut-Up: When considering a parrot it's vital that you know which breeds are reluctant talkers, chatty talkers and those ones that constantly berate to the extent that you want to hide them away in a back forlorn corner well out of hearing range. This is no laughing matter as many parrots, especially the smaller ones can solicit a scream so loud that it will make your blood boil when it won't shut-up!

After taking the bird to the vet and a diagnosis is made, take the bird home immediately. Home care at this stage is very important. Keep your bird warm and try to encourage it to eat. Sick birds have usually stopped eating so it is important for them to eat well to get their strength back. If they are unable to eat then they may need to be hospitalized.

Unfortunately, by the time an owner realizes his bird is sick, the bird is more than likely seriously ill. Therefore it becomes even more critical to give your bird the best care possible. Most owners go to pet stores first to try to treat the bird instead of going straight to the vet. This only makes the problem worse. However, if you catch the bird's illness quickly enough you'll have a very good chance of getting him back on his feet

Hopper feeders have a built in benefit – their size. A number of feeders have very tiny feeder platforms that are too fragile or precarious for larger birds. Hopper feeders, however, accommodate birds of all sizes.  And, if you purchase one with a generous feeding platform, it will allow many  birds to feed at a time. This gives you the possibility of having many different bird species sharing your garden space.

On the other hand, if you’re afraid of the feeder being taken over by larger birds you may decide that you don’t want larger birds in your garden. In that case, one nice feature you should look for in a hopper feeder is weight sensitive perches. This lets you calibrate the feeder so that only birds of the size you desire will can the feeder.

When you buy your hopper feeder, don’t buy the cheap ones. If it’s made of cheap plastic or cheap wood, look for another brand or model. Plastic feeders have a real tendency to discolor. This is especially true when they are in the bright sun all day. They also tend to cloud up and become “grungy looking” over time. A well made wood feeder can be a beautiful addition to your yard and last for years. Feeders made of cheap wood will likely crack or split and need replacing within a couple of year.

A hopper feeder is one of the simplest and maintenance free feeders you can buy. The only simpler type of feeder is the platform feeder which, while inexpensive, leaves the bird seeds totally exposed to the weather and other critters.

Where to place your feeder? A hopper feeder can be placed almost anywhere in your garden. You can hang it from a tree in your yard or you can fix it on a pole. If you have multiple trees, you can hang your hopper feeder from a wire stretched between them. Wherever you place it, you can count on your bird feeder giving you many years of enjoyment

Imagine what it is like living in a cage? Chances are, you will feel bored after just a few minutes so you can probably understand how your pet bird feels like being locked the whole day. That is why to prevent them from doing anything harmful to themselves, you should know how to choose the right toys for them.

When looking for a toy, make sure that this is the right size for your bird. Small toys are not good for large birds because they could break this, swallow and choke on it.

One of the most safe toy is the swing that is suitable for both the big and the small birds. This will allow them to sway back and forth to pass the time.

If you want to give your bird some exercise, it will be nice to put a ladder which will enable them to climb up or down.

Large birds like to play with puzzles and mazes. As an added incentive, see to it that there are nuts inside which they can get as a reward for being able to finish the game.

Let’s say your bird loves to pluck its feathers. As this can be harmful to them therefore preened toys are the best to give them. Almost all the preened toys are made of cotton fabric. The downside to using this is that type of toy is that it will eventually fray due to wear and tear.

When this happens, remove it immediately and have it replaced with a new one because the threads could tangle around their neck or toe.

An option to the preened toy made of cotton is the one made from feathers that are considered to be safer since loose threads will never happen.

Other toys you can give your pet bird include children’s wooden blocks, paper towel tubes and tongue depressors.

If one or two of the toys interest you and having more is better than having one or two around, you can create a play gym for your pet bird by buying several of these, putting it together and placing this inside their cage.

You should just be sure there is sufficient room so the bird can rest and do some other stuff when they don’t feel like playing.

Now that we know what toys are nice for the bird, it is important to know what toys are not safe for birds. These include mirrors or anything that has a reflective surface because this may make the bird bond to its own reflection thus no longer being tame and friendly to people.

Toys with small parts should never be given because they could swallow it and there could be fatal consequences. It should also not have any bells or split rings.

Your pet bird needs time to unwind and providing them with toys is one way to keep them from bring unhappy and bored especially when you are not around to be with them.

Most of these toys can be purchased from the toy store or grocery so will not have a hard time finding a few things to keep them busy until you get home. If you want toys exclusive for pet birds, try looking online and in other specialty stores. Just remember, the best toys to give them are those that are solidly built.
