It seems as though every few years we find out about additional dangers found in every day applications such as insect repellents. Now, one of the best ways to treat bug or mosquito bites is to avoid putting yourself in a location or position to get bit. This isn’t always possible depending on where you live, however, so another way you can live a greener life is making your own, organic-based insect repellent. Not only will it be safer for you and your family, but it will cost less money and be more environmentally friendly.

Homemade Insect Repellent

What Ingredients Do You Need to Make Homemade Insect Repellent

Small pitcher

Clean spray bottle

1 Oz of a Carrier Oil (Any massage oil or olive oil will work)

15-20 drops of citronella oil (essential)

15-20 drops of lemon oil (essential)

15-20 drops lemongrass oil (essential)

15-20 drops of eucalyptus oil (essential)

How Do You Make Homemade Insect Repellent

The steps to make the insect repellent are pretty simple:

Step 1 – Mix the oils with the carrier oil in a small pitcher or mixing bowl.

Step 2 – Pour the mixture into a spray bottle

Although this recipe for insect repellent is homemade, you should not use it on small children or infants due to the citronella oil

You can save a significant amount of money by making your own home remedy medicines before its time to go see the doctor. Of course, home remedies are no replacement for professional medical treatment, but if you have a choice of making your own chest rub or buying an over-priced over-the-counter medicine, it may be worth a try to help save you money and live a bit greener life.

Green Life Guide provides home remedies for consideration, but does not recommend that you use them in place of seeking professional medical assistance.

Some tips to consider when using an online fax service are:
- Try to use Arial or Verdana font faces with a size 12 or larger to display better on the fax.
- Always use a cover page since you don’t know how many incoming faxes are received on the other end of the fax.
- Faxes transmit at a 200 DPI resolution where your printer will normally print at 600 DPI or greater.
- If you are scanning documents to fax, choose black and white, halftone to make them more compatible with the fax format.
- Portrait layouts on documents tend to fax better than non-standard layouts.

If you decide to make biodiesel at home, you’ll find that the process is like making homemade soap. The vegetable oil that you use for biodiesel is similar to animal fat in that it contains triglyceride which has glycerin in it. In order to take the vegetable oil and turn in into biofuel or biodiesel, you will have to get rid of the glycerin that is contained in the oil. Once the oil and glycerin and separated, the substance is considered to be esterfied.

How Do You Displace the Glycerin During Biodiesel Production?

During the production process of biodiesel, you will add either a methanol or ethanol based alcohol to separate the glycerin from the oil. In order to trigger the reaction that causes the separation, lye is used as the primary catalyst to start the chemical reaction.

Where Do You Find Methanol?

When you go to buy methanol to make your homemade biodiesel, you’ll find that there are a lot of different products out there to look through. Some of these include wood alcohol, wood spirits, alcohol, methyl hydroxide, methylol, pyroxylic spirit, monohydroxymethane, hydroxymethane, colonial spirits, carbinol, stove fuel, methy hydrate, and wood naphtha to name a few. They all describe methanol. If you are in doubt, you should double check before purchasing. One of the product names, methylcarbinol, can be used to describe methanol or ethanol. Ethanol is several degrees harder to work with when making your own biodiesel. The other thing to watch, is to not substitute isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) or methylated spirits (denatured alcohol) or your biodiesel production will fail. Do not buy methanol in large quantities until you have successfully made biodiesel and have your process nailed down.

What Does Lye Do in the Biodiesel Production Process?

Lye is the catalyst that helps change the glycerin into biodiesel. When choosing what type of lye to use for your production, you can choose between potassium hydroxide or sodium hydroxide. Normally, you will find it a bit easier and cheaper to buy sodium hydroxide. If you decide to use potassium hydroxide, check your biodiesel instructions with many of them requiring you to use up to 1.4 times as much as with sodium hydroxide. You will also need to use isopropanol for the titration of your biodiesel. All of these ingredients can be purchased at your local drug store, craft store, and chemical suppliers.

Biodiesel Production Safety When Handing Lye

You should be safe and careful during the entire biodiesel process, but especially so when handing lye. You will need to wear eye and hand protection when handling lye as well as a respirator rated to protect against the chemical. You should not eat around it, and do not store your materials in tin, zinc, or aluminum containers to avoid a reaction with the lye. Ensure you review biodiesel safety precautions before starting to make your first batch of biodiesel in the home.

When the Biodiesel Production Process is Completed

When you finish making your biodiesel, you will see the separated glycerin sitting on the bottom of the container in two different layers. The bottom layer of the gylcerin will be separated from the remainder of the mixture. You can then use the biodiesel fuel you have created as an alternative energy source that is located at the top of the container.

One of the easiest things that you can do to go green and save money at the same time is to take some basic steps to get better gas mileage for your vehicle. By getting the most out of every mile that you drive, you will help reduce climate change by reducing the amount of carbon dioxide (CO2) that your car creates and will reduce your overall carbon footprint. It will also help reduce the country’s overall dependence on oil while at the same time increasing our energy stability by using it wisely now.

Green Life Guide Tip #1 – Drive Smart

When you drive aggressively it wastes gasoline. This includes speeding, stop and go driving, and rapidly accelerating. When you drive in this manner, your gas mileage can decrease up to 33 percent when on the highway and by 5 percent when driving in town. You’ll see savings between 13 and 88 cents a gallon when gas is around $2.65 USD a gallon.

Green Life Guide Tip #2 – Drive Under the Speed Limit

Each vehicle has a little bit different optimum speed to achieve the best fuel efficiency. As a general rule of thumb, your car’s gas mileage will decrease at an exponential rate as you increase speed over 60 mph. Every 5 mph that you drive above 60 is equivalent to paying about a quarter more per gallon for your gas. The potential savings are between 19 and 61 cents a gallon.

Green Life Guide Tip #3 – Get Rid of Extra Weight

Now we’re not talking about removing permanently installed seats here, but every 100 pounds of excess weight in your car or truck will reduce your fuel efficiency up to 2 percent. The smaller your car, the greater the impact will be. The savings you’ll see will be between 3 and 5 cents a gallon.

Green Life Guide Tip #4 – Use Cruise Control and Don’t Leave Your Car Running

When you use cruise control on the highway, you keep your car going a constant speed and will save gas from not continually accelerating and decelerating. Similarly, when your car idles, you are not getting any fuel efficiency out of your vehicle. The bigger your car or truck, the more you need to pay attention to excessive idle times to increase your gas mileage. At the same time, if your car has an overdrive gear, you should use it. It keeps the vehicle engine speed at the lowest RPM necessary, reduces wear and tear on your engine, and saves gas.

Green Life Guide Tip #5 – Tune Your Engine

If you car is not properly tuned or is not passing required emissions testing for your state, then you could be losing up to 4% of the potential gas mileage from your vehicle. You do have to realize though, that if you improperly tune the car this can get even worse. If you have a bad O2 sensor you gas mileage can suffer by up to 40%. Your overall savings by keeping your car properly tuned can be up to 11 cents a gallon.

Green Life Guide Tip #6 – Keep Your Tires Pumped Up

This tip was made most famous by President Obama, but you can increase your gas mileage up to just over 3% by maintaining proper tire inflation. Every 1 PSI that your tires are under-inflated results in a .3% decrease in gas mileage. If you don’t know what the right inflation pressure is, most cars have a sticker that is located on the driver’s side door jamb or in the owner’s manual for the vehicle. This can differ from the rating on your actual tire, so it is worth checking what the recommended rating for your car is supposed to be. You can save up to 8 cents a gallon with proper tire inflation.

Green Life Guide Tip #7 – Use the Right Motor Oil

Its not a huge improvement in gas mileage, but if you use the proper grade of oil for your car, you can save 3 to 5 cents a gallon. A good example is if your car engine is rated to use 5W-30 and you use 10W-30, you will lower your gas mileage up to 1 to 2 percent.

Green Life Guide Tip #8 – Effectively Plan Your Trips

When gas was under $2 USD a gallon, most Americans did not do a lot of route planning like our European friends do. If you take a little fore thought and plan to combine trips into one long one then you can save a significant amount of fuel by avoiding starting your car multiple times from a cold start. You can end up using twice the amount of fuel by starting your car from a cold iron state. When you are taking a long trip and have been in the habit of using a roof rack, see if you can fit your luggage inside of your vehicle. By using a roof rack, you can decrease your fuel efficiency by up to 5%.

A common misconception that occurs when people read about hydrogen fuel cell technology is the belief that the hydrogen gas is the energy source. In actuality, hydrogen is an energy carrier that stores and delivers energy that can be used. Although hydrogen is available in the natural environment of the Earth, it does have to be produced from existing compounds that contain hydrogen in order to then use it as a renewable energy source.

How Do We Obtain Hydrogen?

There are a number of resources than can be used to produce hydrogen. These include but are not limited to using fossil fuels, natural gas, biomass, nuclear, and other alternative energy sources such as hydroelectric, solar, wind, and geothermal energy production sources. One of the reasons behind the significant amount of research into hydrogen as an alternative energy source is the abundance of the resource. When hydrogen is produced, it can be at a centralized plan that is hundreds of miles from where the hydrogen will be used or in small distributed locations such as a refueling station or local power site location.

How Do We Produce Hydrogen?

There area several methods and technologies used to produce hydrogen to include natural gas reforming, renewable elctrolysis, gasification, renewable liquid forming, nuclear electrolysis, and photobiological and photoelectrochemical methods.
Harvesting Hydrogen from Natural Gas
Hydrogen can be harvested from the methane found in natural gas. The process is referred to as steam methane reforming and is used to produce approximately 95 percent of the hydrogen used in the United States today. An alternative method is called partial oxidation which harvests the hydrogen by bruning methane in the air. Each of these methods creates a synthesis gas that is then reacted with water in order to produce even more hydrogen.

Renewable Electrolysis and Gasification

The electrolysis method of hydrogen harvesting makes use of electric current in order to split water into oxygen and hydrogen. An even greener manner of this type of harvesting is to use an alternative energy source such as solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, or wind in order to produce the energy used in the harvesting process.

Gasification is the hydrogen producing process that uses coal or biomass and applies heat while putting the substance under pressure with steam present. A number of chemical reactions then occur which produces a synthesis gas that is then combined with the steam in order to produce additional hydrogen. Using this method is more efficient than directly burning coal to harvest hydrogen. Researchers continue to work on new methods to separate and store the carbon dioxide that is produced in the currently used process in order to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions that currently result from gasification.

What Are the Barriers to Hydrogen Harvesting?

The largest barrier to wide-spread hydrogen harvesting for energy use is reducing the cost of the harvesting process and transportation. The goal of research and development is to reduce the cost of a gallon of gasoline equivalent of hydrogen to approximately $2 to $3 USD before tax. Current technology is not quite there yet, but photobiological and photoelectrochemical harvesting techniques are still in the early stages of research and may have the most potential to be the cheapest and cleanest means of hydrogen harvesting for use in fuel cell technologies as an alternative energy source.
