Ebrary - accessing ebooks from the Ebrary collection

Due to recent changes to access to the Ebrary ebook collection, the Library is undertaking work which may result in ebook titles from this collection not being accesible through the Library Catalogue. Relocation St Benedict's Library (Sydney Campus)

Today was the last day on which the St Benedict's Library at our Broadway library was open to students and staff until Wednesday December 28. During this break the Library is relocating to Canavan Hall.

Telephone and email contact will be maintained in the interim during weekday standard business hours, excluding Public and University holidays (ph: 02 8204 4350; email: sydney.stbenedictslibrary@nd.edu.au).

The Campus will be closed Friday December 23, Monday December 26, Tuesday December 27.

Works at the St Teresa's Library (Fremantle Campus)

For the next two weeks there is a project running to upgrade the lighting on the ground floor of the St Teresa’s Library.

This work means that areas of the Library will have no lighting and there will be some noise as the electricians prepare to mount the new light fixtures.

We apologise for the disturbance and would remind you that the other two campus libraries are open for business and should be both lighter and quieter.

Borrowing at Other University Libraries

The Australia university libraries have an agreement in place called University Libraries Australia (ULA) which enables university staff and students to visit libraries other than their home library and borrow materials from the collections.

To date, this scheme has not applied universally for University of Notre Dame staff and students but recently that has changed, most notably in Western Australia, where staff and students have access to both UWA and Curtin University.

Each library determines what you can borrow and for how long. These conditions are on the websites for these libraries and is likely to be listed under 'reciprocal borrowing'. You will find that these libraries may provide some limited access to electronic resources such as databases, eJournals and ebooks at the libraries, but they do not provide off-campus access to these services due to licence restrictions.

Before visiting another university library please check our website for information about how to access services. In WA you need to register online before you visit the library you wish to borrow from. In NSW you will find that you may need to pay a registration fee to borrow.

Any item borrowed from these other libraries is subject to fines and charges if it is not returned on time, damaged or lost. Borrowers will be held liable for these costs.

The winner of the iPad2 from the recent University Library customer satisfaction survey was Jacob Lynch, from the Fremantle Campus. Jacob is a third year Law/Commerce student and completed a survey as a regular user of the Craven Law Library at the Fremantle Campus. Jacob is pictured receiving the prize from Stephen McVey, Director Library Services, and Jean McKay, Manager of the Craven Law Library.

The University Library is currently conducting a customer satisfaction survey. You can link to the survey from the Library homepage.

The survey is an opportunity for both students and staff to answer a series of questions about how they use the Library, its services and collections, both print and online. We are asking for this feedback so that we can develop the Library services and collections to better meet your needs.

Who can read my responses?
The survey is being conducted by an independent survey research company, Insynch, and individual responses cannot be viewed by University staff. Once the responses are collated and analysed, the results will be published on the University Library website and distributed to all students and staff via email. We will continue to keep students and staff informed via our Library News blog as we develop the Library services and collections.

How long will it take?
The survey will conducted online and will take about 10 minutes to complete. The survey will be open from 9am WST on the 5th of September 2011 for four weeks, closing on the 2nd of October 2011

How can I win the iPad?
All students who reply to the survey will go into a draw to win an Apple iPad2. There is also a runners-up prize of a $50 iTunes voucher for each of our six campus libraries. The winners will be randomly selected by the survey research company and notified via email to collect their prizes from their local Library. Staff are being surveyed as well but are not eligible for the prize draw.

Informaworld becomes Taylor & Francis Online
The previous Informaworld site has had a face lift and is now called Taylor & Francis Online. This database supports the humanities and social sciences. Access via Databases page.

Informit Indigenous Collection
The Informit Indigenous Collection brings together a broad range of Indigenous research resources that span Indigenous traditions around the world. These resources address both contemporary and historical issues within Indigenous studies encompassing anthropology, community development, cultural studies, economics, education, health, history, human geography, law and land rights, literature, politics and policy making, (post)colonial studies, psychology, race studies, sociology and visual and performing arts. Theatre in Video
Theatre in Video has moved to a new platform. This platform contains more than 250 definitive performances of the world's leading plays, together with more than 100 film documentaries, online in streaming video - more than 500 hours in all, representing hundreds of leading playwrights, actors and directors. Legal Online

Connect4 – Australian Stock Exchange Listed company information
Connect 4 databases and analysis provide information about the activities of publicly listed companies. The University Library now provides access to the following modules in Connect4: Expert Reports, Annual Reports & Company Announcements.

Lawlex Legislative alerts
Provides users with information about publicly announced changes to, or the introduction of new legislation. Access Lawlex via the Databases page.

Maths300
This is a series of 300 maths lessons from classrooms across Australia. It is a computer based resource for mathematics teachers from 0–12, offering over 175 lesson plans, all of which support current curriculum and teaching strands. Maths300 is available from all open access PCs on campus only.

IT will be performing some scheduled maintenance on one of the Library's servers which may result in the Library's online resources, including ejournal and ebook databases being unavailable for a short period of time.

Your Username and Password...

The Library eResources are licensed from publishers who stipulate how they may be used.

They available to all currently enrolled students and actively employed staff members. Access is controlled via the Username and Password that students and staff are given to access University Resources. If you share this Username and Password with other people you are not only in breach of the terms and conditions for the use of these resources you are also allowing these people to access all of your other services, including your webmail, Blackboard and your results.

Please ensure that the Username and Password is not shared with anybody else and if you have reason to believe that somebody else does know your Username and Password that you reset it immediately or contact ITServices to request that they reset it for you (studentitsupport@nd.edu.au).

The Library monitors access to these resources and can determine when they are accessed and from which locations. If we suspect that the access is not consistent with the terms and conditions for the use of these resources we will suspend access to the Library eResources off-campus until we speak to the account holder in person.

RefWorks 2.0 as its now known, takes advantage of the latest web technologies to create a more intuitive and user-friendly interface, where frequently used features and Quick Access links make navigating to all of the tools required to manage, edit, use and share your references much easier.

Start using RefWorks 2.0 today by logging into your Refworks account and clicking on the RefWorks 2.0 link at the top of the screen.

All of your folders, citations, notes etc from the Refworks 'classic' interface are ready for you to start using in RefWorks 2.0. You need only link through to the new platform once, every future login will be directed to this interface.

eResources Annual Review 2011

Each year the University Library conducts a review of the entire suite of our subscription resources – full text databases, e-book collections, research portals and individual journal subscriptions both print and electronic – to determine the ongoing suitability of the existing resource and what resources we should be adding to the collections in order to better support our teaching and research activities. As a result of last year’s review a significant number of new resources were added to the collections.

The Library is inviting all staff and students to contribute to the exercise by suggesting resources they want to see available in their local library or in the shared electronic collections. To make a suggestion please email your Liaison Librarian (a list of the librarians is here). You can follow the suggestions being made and comment upon them via this link . You will need a ‘Google’ account to access this blog.

Your contributions can take three forms:

Comments about the value of existing resources. As a rule we don't cancel resources unless they are superseded but it is useful to know what you like or don't like about the existing resources.

Suggestions for new resources. If you are going to suggest a new resource you need to provide the name of resource, why you think it is useful and who it would be useful to. The Library can investigate the product with the vendor and will arrange trials as needed. Details of trials will be posted to this blog. Pricing will be obtained by the Library.

Comments about existing suggestions and trials. As noted above you can track the suggestions being made on the blog. The more we can hear from you about your information needs the easier it is for us to develop the collection in ways that support your teaching and research. The blog is an open forum but comments will be moderated as necessary.

The review will run until 31st May 2011. All suggestions received by the end of the review will be considered by the Library's E-Resource Management Working Group who will make a recommendation to the Library Management Committee about which resources we will be seeking to add in 2012. Final decisions depend on the availability of funds to support the subscriptions we wish to make available.

The Library will communicate with you via this blog as new resources become available. You can subscribe to the Blog for email updates about Library services.
