I’ve got to come clean: I had to google Bastille Day. It obviously had something to do with France, and I had a hunch it was involving some sort of battle or revolution. Wikipedia (which is never wrong) set me straight. Most citizens of 18th century France, under rule of King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette, were living in poverty. The Parisian populace felt the economic diversity between the rich and the poor was too vast, so a band of French renegades stormed The Bastille prison fortress and freed the seven political prisoners, marking the event which is now considered to begin the French Revolution. Cheers to you, modern-day French government!<br /><br />However, starting this year, Bastille Day has the honor of a new anniversary. The geniuses running the brewery next door, The Pelican Pub & Brewery , have come up with something marvelous. Being a Mug Club member, I got an email with a secret beer tap password. If I went to the Pub and muttered a special key word to the bartender, I’d get to be among the first to try this little liquid miracle, before it became available to the swarming beer-drinking masses. It’s called, “The Guillotine.” As bloody and ill-reputable as actual guillotines are, this deliciously tangy, light ale which comes from “experimental hops,” gladly bears no semblance to its namesake. <br /><br />I was leery to begin with. It’s against my personal convictions to willingly ingest anything “experimental.” However, it was love at first sip for me. The Pelican ale “hot sheet” describes it as having a zesty, sweet citrus notes of tangerine, mingled with floral, spicy and even perfume-like aromas. Very French, very delicious. It is like the lull between two storms eh? This is the time of year that I always try to make sure that I take some time for myself to recharge before the next onslaught of family, festivities, and 'go go go'. Being that I live at Cape Kiwanda I don't have to go to far to get that relaxation, and I really would advise that you pop down here to the Cottages for a weekend getaway this Fall if you feel like you need to re-center yourself. You could start your day off with a nice long morning walk on the beach with a hot espresso from Stimulus Cafe (and maybe a little pastry treat...because you totally deserve it!). The for lunch, trying one of the new beer releases at the Pelican is always a must, especially since they release some of their best seasonals (in my opinion) in the Fall. With each seasonal beer you taste you should sample what the restaurant recommends for a food pairing with it. Their recommendations are always spot-on for the flavor combos. Spend the afternoon strolling through the local shops...you just might find that 'perfect something' for that one person on your list that is so impossible to shop for. Then, after watching the perfect sunset over the ocean, grab your favorite book or movie and curl up in front of the fireplace for a relaxing evening. Or, if you're feeling like you really need to pamper yourself, fill up the soaking tub with hot water and (here's a secret I'll let you in on) pour some of the H2O+spa body wash into the tub and turn the jets on. The body wash bubbles up like the most luxurious bubble bath and smells heavenly. There will be live music throughout the weekend and many exciting activities as follows:<br />-The dedication ceremy for the new Dorymen's Memorial Wall at the Cape be on Sunday, July 19th, time TBA. <br />-The Parade will be Saturday, July 18th, starting at 11am. The theme is "Memories of the past, dreams for the future". Parade line-up at the boat ramp on Sunset Drive begins at 8:00am, judging will begin promptly at 9:30am. It's like summertime decided to come early this year and give us a boost that will get us thru the rest of the winter weather that is sure to desend on us again soon. The sun is high in a cloudless sky, the temp is 60-65 degrees, surfers are here in abundance, kids are scrambling up and down the dune, dogs are chasing balls in the surf, and people are enjoying craft beers on the patio of the Pelican. If you haven't made it out to the Cottages this week, grab your bags, call in sick and get down here soon! If you are kicking yourself for not being able to be here this week or for not believing the weather reports, keep an eye on the coast for the next time the warm-weather-gods decide to let us in on their secret. All of our guests are full of warm smiles and a quiet joy that can only come from spending time with friends and family in a place they love. The Cottages have been filled with guests taking a break from the hubub of their normal lives to escape to the beach for some time together. Fantastic smells of delicious meals being cooked have been wafting from the Cottages as our guest try out their culinary skills in their kitchens, and full bellies are getting walked off out on the beach or on the dune. </p><p>As the December storms start to roll in and the waves get high enough to crash up and over the saddleback of our Cape Kiwanda, our guests will be cozied up in front of their fireplace or enjoying hot chowder with a pint of craft beer at the Pelican. The corner booth in the Pelican is the perfect spot to 'oooh' and 'aaaahhh' at the mighty waves!</p><p>This is my absolute favorite time of year. All the craziness of the summer has worn off, everyone is full of warm cheer, the Bad Santa is on tap, and the holiday lights look so festive! I invite everyone to come down and experience Pacific City in December! I recently received an email from a gentleman who was ready to propose to his girlfriend and wanted to make it a very memorable time. So, he enlisted the help of myself and the other concierge, Randy. We were emailed a detailed list of flowers to order and pick up, packages of gifts that were arriving to be delivered at a certain time, the timing of the proposal, and a request to take some photos of the actual proposal. Randy and I were excited to help make such a big day a even more memorable day. The flowers were set up in The Cottage (birds of paradise, lilies and white roses), Saison du Pelican Ale was on ice, the gifts were ready to be delivered and Randy had the camera ready. As he asked her the big question, against the backdrop of Kiwanda Haystack Rock and a beautiful sunset, she said YES!! We wish this couple all the very best!! Maybe they will want to get married on the beach here in Pacific City, we do have a great banquet room at the Pelican Pub and Brewery that puts on <a href="http://www.pelicanbrewery.com/pages/banquets.html">AMAZING weddings (hint hint)</a>.</p><p>I really hope that they will come back again to The Cottages on their anniversaries, and maybe we will have some more couples out their make a memory like this in the future. Named after a Nestugga Indian tribe Chief of the 1800’s, you can still see the chief’s profile in the shape of the rock (with the keyhole being his ‘ponytail’). Kiawanda sits about one mile offshore and is part of the Oregon Islands Wilderness managed by the Fish & Wildlife Service. The rock is also the roosting site of the endangered Semidi Island Aleutian Cackling Goose during it’s spring migration, and home to hundreds of seagulls year-round.</p><p>The Chief has proven to be a great subject for photography any time of year: from gorgeous sunrises, to amber colored sunsets; from quiet foggy days where only a fraction of the rock is visible, to violent storms with huge waves that crash up and over the keyhole; from blue skied warm days where the rock’s vegetation looks emerald green, to a winter wonderland when we get a rare snowfall that blankets the rock and beaches in a coat of white. Kiawanda has inspired many artists as well and is seen in artwork around the US, and possibly the world. It has been the backdrop to some fantastic surfing, the shadow over many dory boats as they haul in a great catch, and the reference point as whales are spotted in the area coming up for a breath of air with a mighty spray of water. </p><p>Pacific City’s Haystack rock is definitely a source of awe, pride, and inspiration for many people who live in and come to visit our little beach town.</p> </article> <article> <h1>Summer must be getting close.</h1> <p>admin — Thu, 29 May 2008 23:08:19 +0000</p> <h1>Summer must be getting close.</h1><p>The Pelican just tapped into their summer seasonals, the Heiferweizen and the Surfer’s Summer Ale. These two beers are my favorites to grab and enjoy after an adventurous afternoon. They are an especially good pairing after a day of exploring Cape Kiwanda.</p><p>The Cape is most well known for it’s giant sand dune that offers up a challenge to all who attempt to summit. The dune just keeps getting steeper the higher you go, and the sand slides back a half step for every full step you take. But the views are well worth the climb, so make sure you bring your camera! The Cape also offers up wonderful tide pools at low tide. They are full of sea stars, sea anemones, mollusks, and much much more! Make sure watch your step though, the rocks can be a bit slippery.</p><p>Northwest side of the Cape offers up a great view point for whale watching. Each Cottage's propane-fueled barbeque is easy to operate and ready to go at a moment's notice. There is an extra propane tank in the laundry closet and all the utensils and platters you'll need are in the kitchen.</p><p>The Cape Kiwanda Marketplace just across the street has lots of fresh meats and seafood for the occasion. And, of course, there's the daily fresh dory-caught crab if you want to start your meal with a crab cocktail appetizer. And for dessert, you'll want to check out their vast selection of home-made ice cream and fudge.</p><p>Feeling a little less ambitious but still in the mood for a delicious dinner? Chef Pete at the Pelican Pub is featuring his personal recipe beer-crusted halibut this month. Already, many of you have taken amazing walks on the beach, a few have dared to climb the dune, several have gone riding on the beach at low-tide on our wonderful beach-cruiser bikes, and a handful of you have ventured out to some of the great hiking trails around the area!</p><p>Well, the next treat in store for you is Whale Watch Week which is March 21st - March 30th, and Cape Kiwanda is an official whale watching site. So keep an eye out for flukes and sprays and maybe even the occasional breech as the whales venture north. Last summer we were fortunate enough to have a resident whale and calf decide that they liked our little Cape enough to hang out for a few weeks. They put on quite a show.</p><p>We also have the SOLV Great Oregon Spring Beach Cleanup on Saturday March 29th. The Pelican Pub & Brewery is a registration site to help out in this worthy effort to keep our beaches clean.
