Minister Kenney Announces New Start-Up Visa, First of its Kind in the World

Toronto, January 24, 2013 — Canada will launch a brand new program on April 1 to recruit innovative immigrant entrepreneurs who will create new jobs and spur economic growth, Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney announced today.

Our new Start-Up Visa will help make Canada the destination of choice for the world’s best and brightest to launch their companies,” said Minister Kenney. “Recruiting dynamic entrepreneurs from around the world will help Canada remain competitive in the global economy.

The Start-Up Visa Program will link immigrant entrepreneurs with private sector organizations in Canada that have experience working with start-ups and who can provide essential resources. The Program is part of a series of transformational changes to Canada’s immigration system that will make it faster, more flexible and focused on Canada’s economic needs.

As a way to help these in-demand entrepreneurs fulfil their potential and maximize their impact on the Canadian labour market, they will require the support of a Canadian angel investor group or venture capital fund before they can apply to the Start-Up Visa Program. Initially, Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) will collaborate with two umbrella groups: Canada’s Venture Capital & Private Equity Association (CVCA) and the National Angel Capital Organization (NACO). These groups will identify which members of their associations will be eligible to participate in the Program. CIC is also working with the Canadian Association of Business Incubation to include business incubators in the list of eligible organizations as soon as feasible.

CVCA is honoured to partner with the Government of Canada in the launch of the Start-Up Visa Program,” said Peter van der Velden, President of the CVCA and Managing General Partner of Lumira Capital. “Through this Program, we want to attract high-quality entrepreneurs from around the globe and help build best-in-class companies in Canada.

Canada’s Citizenship, Immigration and Multiculturalism Minister Jason Kenney has announced on Monday December 10, 2012,  a new a new Federal Skilled Trades Program is being launched on January 2, 2013, in a bid to meet country’s growing requirements for skilled tradespersons.  Canada will accept up to 3000 tradespersons during the first year of the launch of the Federal Skilled Trades Program for foreign professionals who meet certain criteria. The tradespersons must have two years work experience and meet the minimum language requirements.

Jason Kenney has said that the newly introduced Skilled Trades Stream will assist in meeting the labour shortages and with new changes the immigration system will be fast and flexible working for Canadian economy.

“The new Skilled Trades Stream will help address serious labour shortages in some regions of the country,” said the Minister Kenney in a statement, “and support economic growth.”

“For too long, Canada’s immigration system has not been open to these in-demand skilled workers,” added Jason Kenney. ” These changes are long overdue and will help us move to a fast and flexible immigration system that works for Canada’s economy,” the Minister said.

The  foreign nationals must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the Skilled Tradesprogram. The applicants will require to:

  1. have an offer of employment in Canada or a certificate of qualification from a province or territory to ensure that applicants are “job ready” upon arrival;
  2. meet a basic language requirement;
  3. have a minimum of two years of work experience as a skilled tradesperson, to ensure that the applicant has recent and relevant practice as a qualified journeyman; and
  4. have the skills and experience that match those set out in the National Occupational Classification (NOC B) system, showing that they have performed the essential duties of the occupation.

The minister said that cap for the Skilled Trades Program for the first year has been set at 3000 in order to ensure that there is no backlog and application are processed promptly.

The new program will help the tradespersons to immigrate to Canada without competing with the highly skilled professionals under the Federal Skilled Worker program for Canadian permanent residency.

Protect yourself by meeting the landlord in person, verifying that he or she owns the property and view the property yourself or send someone you know to view it. This shortage of rental properties in the area means that the criminally minded can prey on unsuspecting people.]]>
