<p>With NLP, it is believed that these subconscious beliefs are the result of your thought processes rather than past events and traumas. For this reason, you can replace those thoughts intentionally and consciously.</p>
<p>This process is neither unemotional nor automatic. This is completely wrong, feeling and thoughts must work together.</p>
<p>The secret to long term change is effort. If you know why you smoke, you are only halfway to quitting. It&#8217;s just as important to do something.</p>
<p>You can work to focus on other things to do than smoke.</p>
<p>Consider exercise as a possible surrogate for smoking. This is a double bonus for you! Every urge to smoke you refuse helps you break the habit that threatens your health. When you exercise, you are helping your body become healthy and strong. Perhaps fruit, chocolate or bread will go just as well with your beer or wine as would a cigarette.</p>
<p>In each situation, the technique is to change that choice to smoke a cigarette. Then it becomes an opportunity to avoid smoking and do something positive instead.</p>
<p>Changing habits will lead to changing overall behavior. Remember that time in the past when you were not a smoker? To get back to that time once more, come up with a plan then do it, one step at a time.</p>

<p>In order to achieve optimum health you may find that you need to change something about your life. You may want to change your diet, your exercise routine, or perhaps your overall mental attitude. Since our society looks for immediately results you need to remember that these type of lifestyle changes don’t happen overnight so be patient when looking for results. Another thing to remember is that if you’re trying to lose weight, sometimes the body gets healthy on the inside first before you begin to see results on the outside.</p>
<p><strong>Getting Your Optimum Health Plan Started<span id="more-238"></span></strong></p>
<p>In order to go anywhere you have to understand where you are. Start with a detailed evaluation of your current physical and psychological health. You should know what, if any, medical conditions you have, as well as any mental conditions that may be present.</p>
<p>Here are some things to look for:</p>
<p><em>Being overweight<br />
Having high blood pressure<br />
Having elevated cholesterol<br />
Having high blood sugar<br />
An evaluation showing a medium to high risk for heart attack or stroke<br />
Having insomnia and or sleep complications<br />
Being depressed<br />
Having deteriorating health (especially as a result of aging)</em></p>
<p>If you are not sure of the any of the above check with your health care provider. They can help you answer these questions as well as give you suggestions about what’s needed in your optimum health plan.</p>
<p><strong>Putting Your Optimum Health Plan to Work</strong></p>
<p>It’s not enough to know what’s going on with your health, in order to achieve optimum health you need to do something about it! Once you’ve evaluated your current health situation, you need to consider how you’ll what lifestyle changes you need to make and then set making lifestyle goals. One thing to remember is don’t try making too big a leap all at one time. Set small goals that you can achieve. This sets you up for success as you achieve each small step.</p>
<p>For example, if you have an issue with being overweight, what are some simple lifestyle changes that may help you drop a few pounds?</p>
<p>Some of the most common behaviors that tend to pack on the pounds include drinking sodas, indulging in a lot of sweets, eating a lot of processed foods, and even eating late in the day. So a simple solution would be avoiding high fat, high calorie foods by not bringing them into the house, this way you won’t be tempted to eat them.</p>
<p>Another simple solution would be to join a gym or begin taking walks at lunchtime. A great method of reinforcing this behavior would be having a friend to join you and make a habit of it. In addition to helping control your weight, simple exercise relieves stress and improves your heart health.</p>
<p>If you have difficulty sleeping, an easy method of improving your sleep is to take a quick look at the area you sleep in. Is there something that could be distracting you? A simple thing such as watching television before bed or while in bed can over stimulate your brain, causing you to have difficulty sleeping. An optimum health plan would include limiting your TV viewing before going to bed and keeping it out of your bedroom.</p>
<p>Remember, stress can affect your sleep. A good method to combat the stress that can give you difficulty sleeping is to develop a bedtime routine. This will enable your mind and body to relax before going to bed.</p>
<p>Take an inventory of your health habits. Change anything that could have undesired results, even if it’s only one or two things at a time.</p>
<p><strong>Optimum Health IS Possible</strong></p>
<p>Eating well is only part of your plan for optimum health. To get and stay well you need to consider your overall feelings about life. Are you a person with the notion that the glass is half full, or do you think the glass is half empty? Do you see yourself as the victim when it comes to obstacles in your life, or do you see challenges as opportunities you can use to improve yourself?</p>
<p>Most people dwell on the bad things in their lives. In order to develop a positive mental attitude you need to start dwelling on the good in your life. Make it a habit of thinking about all the things that went right that day. Even if it seemed like a black cloud was following you, something good happened. Choose to think about the good things in your life and use your wonderful imagination to meditate about the many good things coming your way tomorrow. This will reinforce your positive mental attitude as well as your overall health.</p>
<p>Remember &#8211; if you want to have optimum health you must take responsibility for it. You are directly responsible for at least 95% of everything that occurs in your life. As for the other 5%, there are ways to deal with even those things in a positive and productive manner as well.</p>
<p>If you want to enjoy optimum health it’s completely possible! All it takes is some self evaluation, a little goal setting, and the motivation to make a change. Develop your positive mental attitude by focusing on the good in your life. Then take it one step at a time and without a doubt you will achieve optimum health, both mentally and physically!</p>

This is up from 47 years in at the turn of the last century (1900). Up until about 10 years ago, scientist believed that that the brain deteriorated and lost neurons as we aged. This is partly due to the fact that as we age our brains lose between 5 and 10% of their weight. But according to Caleb Finch, Ph.D., the ARCO/William F. Kieschnick Chair in the Neurobiology of Aging and a professor of gerontology and biological sciences this isn’t the case. Professor Finch says, &#8220;Now it is really clear that if you don&#8217;t have a specific disease that causes loss of nerve cells, then most, if not all, of the neurons remain healthy until you die.&#8221;</p>
<p>What does this mean to you? This means that no matter what age bracket you fall into, you can maintain healthy brain activity levels, even as you get older. Your brain activity doesn’t have to slow down. Muddled thinking and similar problems doesn’t necessarily come as a result of aging. Like physical exercise, there are brain enhancement exercises you can do to maintain and improve your mental alertness. <p>Sometimes this can be due partly because of an individual&#8217;s metabolism but sometimes it can simply be that the food choices some weight loss diets don’t match the dieter’s taste. Some people find the seemingly tiny portions of food unsatisfying and, as a result, are not able to stay with the program.</p>

<p>I believe that they enjoy exercise today because I encouraged them to exercise when they were younger. I did this because I understand that a healthy living program includes exercise and is extremely beneficial for everyone no matter their age.</p>
<p>In order to be successful, an exercise program has to be fun. It doesn’t have to seem like work. You can make it more enjoyable if you do it with someone else.</p>
<p>A family workout program has many benefits.  First of all, you have each other to help with accountability.  When one person wants to slack off, their loving family members – especially siblings &#8211; can help them see the light.  Secondly, if you are like me you’ll do much better when you have a buddy or loved one to push you to do your best.  Look at it as friendly competition that can help you achieve fitness goals you never thought possible.</p>
<p><em>Here are five fitness ideas for families who want to be healthier and need a little boost in the right direction.</em><span id="more-209"></span></p>
<p><strong>1.  Enjoy some backyard sports </strong>– It’s probably been a long time since you played a game of dodge ball or kick ball.  Now you have your chance. Get your family together and start a game on the weekends in your back yard or at the local park. Maybe you can get some of your neighbors involved. This type of stop and start movement improves your agility, gets the heart rate up and works your large muscle groups. Some other ideas include a basketball game, a softball game or a game of volleyball.</p>
<p><strong>2.  Take a martial arts class together </strong>– I love the martial arts because it’s more than just a workout. I have had many students that trained with me as a family in my martial arts classes. Although there were separate classes for differing age groups I allowed them to train together once a week. Maybe your local martial arts center does this too. As you learn skills in your individual classes you can come together as a family and practice them.</p>
<p>If martial arts doesn’t appeal to you then aerobics classes are another idea for a family exercise session. For the guys in the family that don’t feel coordinated enough to do a step aerobics class there’s always spinning, swimming or kickboxing classes to choose from at your local YMCA or gym.</p>
<p><strong>3.  Take some time to enjoy nature together</strong>– Families look to each other for things to do. If one person in the family can do it, the others often want to try to do it also. Try going for a family hike.  The parks around your home probably have some beautiful trails that range from easy to more challenging. Be sure to outfit your family with the proper hiking gear and bring some reference materials so that you can learn about nature together.</p>
<p>More difficult but along the same lines as hiking is mountain climbing.  You will encounter trails here too. You can build family camaraderie while helping each other climb the rocks. You also take in some breathtaking views. Both of these activities work your heart, lungs and, at minimum, your lower body. Even on a cool fall day you will feel the burn and the cleansing sweat of a good workout.<br />

4.  Have a family yard work day–</strong> Although no one usually wants to choose outside work, if you do it together it can be fun and gets the family’s hearts pumping. You can take turns mowing a section of the yard. Pushing a lawnmower works both the upper and lower body.  Rake the leaves together in the fall. Then, for more fun, jump into the big pile and then let everyone help rake them up again.</p>
<p><strong>5. Play active video games –</strong> The new video games have become more interactive, athletic and virtual these days. The big talk is about the Wii game console.  Using the Fit board or the regular games, your family will have plenty of laughs and even more exercise as they, play tennis, jump around or move to make the characters move in the games.</p>
<p>Who says family workout programs have to be boring?  Staying healthy can be easy when you have each other. Get together as a family and do something that you love to stay healthy.</p>

It is also one of the world’s greatest natural mental and physical health secrets. It’s like maintenance of your car that was emphasized in that old commercial that said “Pay me now or pay me later”. A healthy living program that includes regular exercise will stave off many of the diseases that seem to come with “old age”, whatever that is.</p>
<p>When I was a kid I didn’t think about exercise as something I needed to do, I just did it. I would go to the playground and play baseball or basketball. We would find an empty lot and play soccer or football. I walked everywhere, rode my bike, climbed trees and rode the skateboard I made out of a wooden board and steel skate wheels. Exercise came naturally. It wasn’t a health secret it was just something that happened naturally in my life.</p>
<p>Today it’s different. I don’t have time to play sports on the playground. Instead of walking I get in my car. I don’t even own a bike or a skateboard anymore. So for me to get exercise I have to plan it into my day. Because of my fanaticism I have managed to stay in excellent shape. My body is in the same kind of shape I was in my 20’s and 30’s. I believe that one result of this is that it keeps my mind sharp.</p>
<p>As you might have guessed, because of my commitment to exercise I regularly tout its benefits to people all the time. Whether it’s training in the martial arts, working out in the gym or just biking or walking regularly, I personally believe that the discipline of a regular exercise program is excellent for staying fit and healthy. Studies are now showing that exercise is also one of the best ways to improve your cognitive abilities and memory.<span id="more-201"></span></p>
<p>Now I must admit that I have a selfish, personal reason to find out how to increase my brain power. My mother suffered from dementia for nearly the last decade of her life. Although at times she seemed to function well, I could see the affects of the disease on her cognitive functions and especially her memory. She went from being a very intelligent, witty woman to a person that could barely recognize her own son. She died not even being able to recognize her own grandchildren.</p>
<p>Approximately 4.5 million people have dementia or Alzheimer&#8217;s disease in our country alone. This number is double the number of Americans afflicted by Alzheimer&#8217;s since 1980. What’s extremely alarming is that one in 10 persons over 65 and nearly half of those over 85 are affected by the disease. I don’t know about you but I want to use every method possible to maintain and improve my memory and concentration so I can function at my highest capacity for the rest of my life.</p>
<p>Over the past couple of decades people in the medical field have been working on determining the relationship between regular exercise and improved cognitive abilities. Through these studies researchers are trying to find what specific exercises can be used to improve memory and reduce normal memory loss. When added to all the other benefits that exercise provides to overall health, this should give you one more reason to get off of the couch and get active.</p>
<p>Studies show that physical activity is one of the best ways to relieve stress and anxiety disorders. These disorders often contribute to cognitive malfunctioning. These and other studies are also providing evidence that exercise may prevent or delay dementia. This is great news for people like me who want to preserve their mental clarity as long as possible, preferably for my entire life.</p>
<p>For years studies have been searching for answers to the question “why do people forget things and what can we do about it?” These studies indicate that exercises can alter the effects of aging on the brain by reducing a normal age-related decline in cognitive functioning. Cognitive functions such as planning, organization and working memory are achieved through simple measure such as increased confidence in abilities with older adults and with younger adults in the same way. So if you have been feeling forgetful or slow to process simple things, it could be that you are just not getting enough exercise.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that physical activity is a catalyst that can help improve brain function. Therefore it can be said that some lifestyle changes may improve cognitive functioning. Studies how shown that a healthy brain diet including foods rich in omega-3 fats, antioxidants, and low glycemic carbohydrates (whole grains) combined with daily walks, relaxation exercises and mental exercises like crossword puzzles can help improve brain function. This also helps to improve memory and concentration while improving overall brain efficiency.</p>
<p>It is well documented that reducing blood pressure, weight and cholesterol and not smoking is important for brain health. Quitting smoking and following a eating and exercise regimen that helps you control your blood pressure and maintain a healthy weight could be one of the best ways to improve your memory.</p>
<p>There is evidence that increasing brain cognitive functioning can be maintained throughout a person’s life by simply living life to the fullest and by continually learning new things. While depressed moods, anxiety, and other psychological illnesses can be associated with both poor emotional and cognitive health, exercise has been shown to help most people counteract the effects from these types of afflictions.</p>
<p>For older adults, mental stimulation is vitally important in preventing age related mental deterioration. Studies show that regular light exercise such as brisk walks, swimming, and other full body exercises helps to improve memory loss and increase brain power. This is due to the improved blood flow to the brain. This improved blood flow has been shown to improve brain function and prevent mental deterioration by stimulating the growth of nerve cells in the region of the brain that handles memory functioning. While it is difficult to determine the exact exercises best to improve your memory, it is conclusive that regular exercise is the best treatment for improvement in overall health and maintaining overall health both physically and mentally.</p>
<p>So my advice is to get up, stay busy, and learn something new. This is always good for mental fitness. Many people tell me that they would like to get started with exercising, but they don’t have any opportunities to do so. The truth is that almost anything can be made into an exercise. Exercise is something that comes as a part of daily life, not something that you have to seek out.</p>
<p>You can start getting in shape by doing the simple things, like dancing while cleaning the house or walking around the block a couple of times. Not only will this be an opportunity to meet your neighbors but it could be the stepping stone to more strenuous activities. If you want to have a formalized exercise program it could be a good idea to get the help of a physical trainer who knows the human body very well and can individualize a program for you.</p>
<p>Look, you only have one life. There’s no reason not to live it fully to the very end. Like the old saying goes, “The mind is a terrible thing to waste.” So get up and go do some exercise.
