His accomplishments are legendary, the man was a true visionary. He did not follow trends or conventional thinking, he set trends. Many times his vision took years to come to fruition, but he was right more often than not. Some people have criticized him for taking other’s ideas and running with it, and there is a small amount of truth to that. However when he did those things, it was usually a raw idea that no one knew what to do it with it, and he ended up taking that piece of raw clay , imagining the possibilites and then bringing to the market something wonderful.

A small list of his accomplishments:

• When the only real computers were IBM monstrosities that took up a whole room to house, he envisioned small computers for everyone.
• When he saw the rough stages of a point and click GUI, he knew that this was the future and not typing text commands and began implementing it into his OS immediately. it was so successful that Bill Gates ended up “allegedly” copying him and the end result was Windows.
• He was forced out of Apple and started his own computing company called NeXT. Many of the technologies ended up being used in future Apple products.
• While at NeXT, he discovered a small company called Pixar and saw a future of CGI animation years before Toy Story came out and was  huge success. He invested millions of dollars, and years of patience, in a company that was doing something that had never been done before commercially.
• With Apple floundering and on the verge of closing for good, he was asked to come back and “consult”. He did and staged the greatest turnaround in history.
• He immediately cut most of Apple’s product lines and stopped allowing cloned machine with the Apple OS. This caused a huge outcry and people thought he was being foolish, cutting off several product channels and revenue producer. He did not care about market share or selling a hundred average items, he would rather sell  one great one.
• He began tearing down the Apple OS 9 and starting from over from scratch because he knew the future was a connected one and instead of the endless patching that Windows has done, he wanted an OS built from the beginning, for this future. He did not care if people or vendors were upset, and they were, he did what he believed was right.
• He unveiled the iMac, the device that saved Apple.
• He introduced OSX
• While everyone was worried about piracy and illegal music downloads, he saw the end of the cd and announced the iPod, the greatest consumer electronic device in history. One that anyone could use.
• To make it even simpler, he came out with Itunes and then opened it up to Windows users too, despite his personal feelings. THIS was the move that made Apple a financial behemoth.
• After the failure of the Motorola Rokr phone, he took control and introduced the iPhone, perhaps the most successful cell phone ever.
• While no one could make a tablet work commercially, he introduced the iPad and once again did what others could not.

The list goes on and on. Yet it’s how he did things more than the actual products he created, that I admired the most. The fervent belief that what he was doing was right, even if it took years to come to fruition. His demand for excellence, and his anger when they came out with something that be thought wasn’t apple worthy. The ability to see what others did not. All while sticking to his original vision of computers for everyone. So while other geeks invented devices and OSes THEY would love to use, he could step out of the box and design it for the rest of the world. The point and click GUI, the click wheel on the iPod, the touch iOS for iPhone and iPad, all designed for the “regular” people. Every aspect is designed that way. Even updating an apple computer is as simple as can be. All while insisting on quality over quantity or money (though they ended up with plenty of both).

Will Apple survive without him? For a while at least. But it will never be the same and neither will my world.

Rest in peace Steve Jobs, you’ve more than earned it.

Email

• Never open email attachments from people you don’t know. If you hold down the shit key when you hit the delete key on your keyboard, it will permanently delete it. It won’t even go to your recycle bin.
• Never open emails from people you don’t know. NEVER! If your email program has a preview window, then you have already opened it when you selected it and view it so turn off the preview pane. At the least, turn it off before you select the unknown email. Even if you just select it to delete it, if it appears in the preview it is already opened.
• Never open email attachments from people you do know but don’t know what the attachment could be. If you download any attachments, scan it first with your updated anti-virus program before opening. Usually if your right click on it, there will be an option for scanning the file.

Floppy disks or USB/Thumb drives

• Same rule as emails. Scan any files before opening them.

Downloaded files from the internet

• Only download files from reputable sites and never open any files without scanning them first.

Illegal file sharing programs

• Programs such as Kazaa or Limewire are major problem causers. If you must use them,
  and they are illegal, once again scan any files before opening or previewing them. I can not tell you how bad most PCs end up being, from having these programs installed.

Keep your anti-virus programs up to date

• Without the latest viruses definitions, it is useless against the latest threats

Download the latest security updates from Windows

• Better yet, enable Automatic Updates

If you have Windows XP, turn on your firewall

• Windows XP comes with a built in firewall that’s better than nothing. There are some free ones that do a better job, such as Zone Alarm Commodo.

Turn off your preview pane in Outlook or Outlook Express

Consider alternatives to Microsoft programs. While nothing is 100% safe, they have a better track record ok keeping your computer safe, in my opinion. Do not be afraid. They are as easy to use as the Windows versions.

• Instead of Outlook Express use Mozilla’s Thunderbird.

• Use Mozilla’s Firefox instead of Internet Explorer. Not only safer but loaded with cool features. Once you use it you can never go back.
