So I’m really going to start at the beginning with a lesson on the importance of getting highly targeted traffic to your money making website.

The fact is, putting up a website doesn’t automatically guarantee that people will come pouring into your site from all over the world.  This isn’t like those infomercials where the guy with the magic knives is faced with throngs of money-waving buyers, dying to own a knife that cuts through stone.

Why you need to get more targeted traffic

You as a web business owner live and die by your targeted traffic generation skills.  Without tons of website traffic, there’s no reason for you to have a website.  If you are on the internet and have put up a website, you know the importance of having getting targeted traffic.

This is even more true if you have a website that you intend to sell something from, which of course, you do — that’s why you’re here.  Selling from a website is just like having a store in the mall:

With a store in the mall, you have plenty of foot traffic wandering around.  Occasionally you have people walk into your store and look around and leave again.  Some peer into your store without ever entering.  Some people enter, shake the merchandise, walk around your store with it for a while, toss stuff in the wrong place, make a mess, and leave.

And some come into your store, pick up the merchandise, and pay you for it.

And you want more of those eager, buying customers!

It’s the same with internet sites.  You want highly targeted traffic to come in and buy.

The challenge of getting traffic

The problem with this scenario online is you compete with many other online shop owners… all who are vying for the same dollar from the same customer’s pocket.

This potential customer doesn’t want to just hand it over to anyone, they want to to be damn sure they are getting good value for their money.  So they shop around, they research what they want to buy, and they are cautious about buying online.

What’s more, because the internet the whole world can access, you likely believe you should get more real customers. And you can get more customers, but you also get more competition.  So you have to show yourself to be the leader and provide real reasons why you’re head and shoulders above everyone else.

You need to fight your way to the top of the pile.

Of course, everyone else is doing the same thing:  they’re fighting their way to become the top dog in your niche.

Here’s a revelation: fighting your way to the top of the pile is a zero-sum game.

That means that every time you rise a notch, someone goes down a notch. Every time someone else gets a customer, you lose a customer.

Maybe this sounds scary because there is so much competition and the competition is actively trying to do the same thing you are: get more targeted traffic to profit from by becoming a better website.

The important thing to remember is that you must give someone a reason for passing along your message. Remember, it’s what’s in it for them that’s important.

It is unique among advertising techniques because it continues to work, even after you’ve stopped promoting it on your own. A lot of times all that is needed is an initial marketing launch for your marketing “virus” to spread.

4. Powerful

Since viral marketing, for the most part, is a type of word-of-mouth advertising, it is one of the most powerful types of advertising you can use. You are more likely to visit a webpage that is referred to you by someone you know. This type of marketing is like having an instant testimonial or a referral built right into your message because it is passed on to people that know each other.

5. It Works

Even the smallest viral marketing campaign can create phenomenal results. Many successful companies have built their business completely around it. Implementing just one or two viral tools into your marketing strategy can immensely increase your website’s traffic.
