People all over the world have been using the much touted Mozilla Firefox web browser for ages it seems but has anyone really, truly explored it yet? When I found all these tips and tricks, I realized that I had just scratched the surface of Mozilla Firefox and I had a ways to go. The tricks listed below will hopefully allow you to utilize Firefox alot better.

Tip 1

Unlike most browsers, Firefox has the ability to open multiple tabs on startup. Maybe you want the weather and Google, or possibly Technology Guides and Cutedge, but whatever your combination, you can have it. Just pick those two, three, or however many tabs you want and then make your way to Tools–>Options–>Main Tab–>Use Current Pages and presto, you’re done.

Tip 2

How many times have you accidentaly closed a tab without knowing it and wishing it could come back just like you wished your pet dog could come back. Well in Firefox’s case, the tab can come back. Just press ctrl+shift+t and the last tab you closed will come back instantly.

Tip 3

I never realized this, but each browser has a different scrolling speed. By default, Firefox scrolls only a few lines with one turn of the scroll wheel on the mouse. If you’re fed up of taking too long to scroll on a Firefox page, there’s an easy way to change this. Type in about:config in the address bar and hit enter. In the filter box, type mousewheel.withnokey. Right click mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines and click Toggle. Then right-click mousewheel.withnokey.numlines and click Modify. Set the number to whatever you want until you find a scroll speed that suits you.

Now there’s still a way to slow down the scroll speed if you want to at times. Just hold Alt and continue scrolling but now it goes one line at a time.

Tip 4

If you’ve made a mistake in a form on Firefox ever, then you’ll want to read this little tidbit to help you from making that same mistake again. Again, go to about:config in the address bar and type in spellcheck. Right click spellcheckDefault and then modify. Change the number from 1 to 2 and restart Mozilla Firefox. From now on, the majority of web forms will have spell check.

In these times, it’s important to save money wherever possible but you still need to get out, enjoy yourself, and splurge once in a while because you deserve it. With the recession hitting us hard, it’s made businesses and it’s killed businesses. One of the types of businesses that keeps on surviving would be discount stores, but the one I’d like to focus on would be the websites that help you find deals. My brother uses this a lot because he’s young and he still has a job that pays well and he likes to travel. So he uses a variety of websites to help him find the best deal on flights and hotels. Now since he lives in the States, he lives so close to many major cities so he usually only looks for hotels. For example, I was with him over the March Break when we went to Vermont and we found a great deal on a Best Western hotel that was up to standards like most Best Western Hotels. Regular price was $110/night, we got it for $54/night and this was on the weekend as well.

Let me take you further into this with a brief overview of a variety of websites that will help you save money too.

The whole point of this is not to find the cheapest deal out there, but to find you the best value which can mean staying at a 2 000 square foot hotel for $120/night which is peanuts if you think about it.

Hotwire

This site is great, whether you are living in the United States of America or The Great White North (i.e. Canada). I was amazed at the great deals they are giving in Toronto, ON for next weekend that I was really tempted to buy a weekend stay at a 4-star hotel in Downtown Toronto East just for the heck of it. Now don’t go with it just yet, because there are other measures you can take to find yourself the better deal. This site offers great deals but it’s at a fixed rate.

Hotwire

TravelZoo

This site also offers fixed rates and great deals and this is where my brother booked a hotel room in downtown Boston for 50% off the normal price. This is much harder to navigate and find deals but it’s still worth a try.

Priceline

Now Priceline is where you can really save some money if you’re lucky. Right off the bat they have some decent hotel rates and they organize it in a good fashion just like Hotwire. Priceline makes its money on the regular deals it offers that are usually higher than Hotwire which is why it can offer extroadinary deals with its unique “Name Your Own Price” option.

Priceline Search

Here, deals can be made or lost. The big thing you have to remember when going down this path is you only get one shot. So don’t lowball it but make sure you also don’t put the price too high. Another drawback of this is you don’t know which hotel you are getting. All you know is the area, the amenties and the star level. To me, this is good enough but if you want an exact location because of logistic reasons, it might not be the best way to go, and you might want to pay up for that luxury.

Priceline Name Your Own Price

So next time you are looking to go on vacation, remember these very special websites as they will always save you money.

Midway Games has announced a release date for its new game, Wheelman, for the end of the coming month of March. Tigon Studios, a company founded by Vin Diesel, is working closely with Midway Games to produce this all-new video game for the Microsoft Xbox 360, Sony Playstation 3 and PC. Both these companies have assembled world class people as well as up-and-coming young talent to help produce this game.

“We’re designing Wheelman to play like a Hollywood blockbuster,” said Vin Diesel, Wheelman star and executive producer, Tigon Studios. “Playing this game will be just like taking control of the greatest car chases from feature films, except this time you’re in the driver’s seat.”

For the first time ever, a video game is set in Barcelona. The developer of this game has provided three reasons for this setting, primarily because it is such a beautiful city—complete with great geography, natural landmarks and breathtaking architecture, all of which have been integrated into the game. This makes for a great backdrop while you, the gamer, are creating carnage everywhere. It is also the perfect setting used to depict the real world as a basis for all the different personalities in the story (e.g., Romanian arms dealers, the Chulos street punk biker gang, and Spanish mafia). Last, but certainly not least, Barcelona is jam packed with sweeping highways and tunnels—great for high-speed pursuits, as well as narrow alleyways that are perfect for bikes and smaller vehicles.

Now, what is this video game about? In essence, the storyline is as follows: Vin Diesel is the main character playing an undercover CIA agent named Milo Burik. His job is to infiltrate the gangs of Barcelona to gather intel on a covert heist. He is an amazing driver, so he works as the “wheelman,” hence the name of the game. The cops come into play because he’s undercover, and since the local cops have no clue, he has to stay one step ahead of them.

The whole gameplay heavily reminds me of Burnout and GTA; Burnout because of its destructive theme, and GTA because of its real world focus and the third person on foot gameplay. Nevertheless, Wheelman has something to offer gamers that both these games don’t: each vehicle is finely tuned and thus the level of gameplay has gone up.

For example, each car in Wheelman has its own physics model for handling and damage, making it much more realistic and allowing the gamer to pull off better drifts, 360 spins, handbrake turns and other stunts. One of the huge features that I noticed was the Vehicle Melee System and being able to shoot at enemies while driving. The Vehicle Melee feature allows gamers to sideswipe pursuing enemies with a simple flick of the joystick. Wheelman’s devastating “slam-n-ram” manoeuvres can be carried out in all directions, just like how it would be in a Hollywood-style car chase.

It doesn’t just stop with those two features; you also have the option of being able to “Air Jack” a car. The days are over where you stop gameplay by getting out of a car and stealing a new one. In Wheelman, you can leap from one moving vehicle to another. On top of this, there is a feature called “Aimed Shot,” which enables gamers to slow down gameplay in order to achieve better accuracy while shooting targets, such as weak spots on cars. This feature works in conjunction with another called “Cyclone.” Gamers are allowed to perform the cyclone move; the cyclone move turns the vehicle 180 degrees and makes an Aimed Shot.

Now let’s get to the objective of this post: the cars and bikes. Wheelman is loaded with as many cars and classes as GTA. There are a multitude of vehicles, such as compact hatchbacks, German sedans, limousines, sport cars, vans, scooters, trucks, and sport bikes. However, let’s not forget about the weapons. Wheelman has all the standard weapons one would expect to see in such a game, including pistols, machine guns, sub-machine guns, grenade launchers, and assault rifles.

In terms of actual gameplay, Wheelman is jam-packed with action. It contains 105 side missions that are broken down into seven categories: Fugitive, Contracts, Street Showdown, Hot Potato, Taxi, Made to Order and Rampage. These side missions tie into the main story and help unlock key bonuses such as garages, weapon/ammo caches, tuning shops and taxi points. Each side mission shows up on the PDA map and sends you an email once it is unlocked.

Wheelman is such a versatile game and action packed that people from Hollywood are trying to develop a script for its movie adaptation. Everyone should keep in mind that it was the game that came first. Currently, the movie is considered as a completely separate entity, which confuses many people. Look out for this game at the end of March 2009, as well as the game-based-movie later on.

My friend told me of a problem she had with her Apple iPod. It froze and she couldn’t reset it via her computer. Now this usually works for most iPod users but there are times when the basics don’t seem to fix anything. I researched and researched and the simplest thing came up. Recharge your iPod because that might be the reason it won’t hook up to your computer. You may have to leave it in the wall outlet for some time before you can start using it again. When you plug it in to your computer again, make sure you have the latest version of iTunes to speed up the process.

There are other methods which include actually opening up your Apple iPod but I won’t go there as I’m not fully aware of what you should do so I recommend reading this CrunchGear Article to learn more and let me say; if you have to resort to this, I am praying for you.

My suggestion though is if you the two options above don’t work (i.e. reseting your iPod on iTunes or charging it for a while) then you should really consider sending it to Apple or wherever you bought it so they can take care of it. Hopefully it won’t too long to get your baby back.

When I first heard about this update through my friend, I questioned it because why would Apple jump from firmware 2.2.1 all the way to 3.0? Well in fact, when I looked it up, it was dead true. Now I’m here to tell you about it. Apple is planning a major revamp of its OS which includes many cool things that might just blow your mind when you put it all together. There are loads of features, 100 last time I counted but these are the ones that I decided to highlight.

iPhone 3.0 Software

Push Technology

Apple was late to the push technology game and so when it released it, it basically killed the battery life. Now, it’s reconfigured its system so that it eliminates background processes and thus improves battery life. This makes the iPhone more business friendly because it automatically updates you if you receive new mail for instance even when the application isn’t running.

Push Notification on Apple iPhone

Cut, Copy & Paste

This to me is one of the biggest improvements for the iPhone after preserving the battery. How many times have you had a URL or some sentence that you wanted to copy and paste but couldn’t? I know I have many times. Now you’ll be able to use it with text messaging and even in Web pages and photos from the camera album. With this feature, you’ll be able to move the copy points and shake to undo. Now why did it take so long to do something so simple? My take is that Apple as we know them likes to control as much as possible which is why they delete apps with no warning. There excuse is that they wanted to deal with the security issue and make it work well with the touch screen.

Undo Paste on Apple iPhone

Real GPS Capabilities

Now you’ll be able to get applications that will have turn-by-turn directions making it a fully capable GPS with the free upgrade for iPhone users. The bad thing is because of licensing issues, the Google Maps app will not be used in conjuction with the GPS so developers will need to get their own maps which leads to the fact that these applications will probably cost users money.

Peer to Peer Connectivity

This is big as well for me at least because I remember I could play Worms on my Sony Ericsson phone with my friend who used to have a Sony Ericsson phone and it’d be great. We’d be sitting like 5m apart and be playing against each other. I was totally surprised to find that the iPod or iPhone could not do this. I’m an iPod Touch user and I was delighted to hear that the Apple iPod Touch does in fact have Bluetooth but Apple kept it locked. Now with this update, both the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch will have Bluetooth so you’ll be able to use this feature. Apple will build upon the original framework of the iPhone Bluetooth system and unlock the iPod Touch system. On top of that, Apple will have add onto the peer to peer system by putting in “in-game voice communication”.

Spotlight

This isn’t huge but it’s still nice. Before you could only search one area of your iPod/iPhone, but now Apple has designed this nice feature that will allow you to search everything at once including mail, iPod library, notes, contacts and calendar. What Apple has done is unique in my mind because it’s very easy to access this feature. Go the home screen (which you can do by clicking the home button anytime) and swipe left and then search away.

Landscape Keyboard

You may ask, we already have this? Well you are technically right but what about when you’re in an app such as Mail? In that situation you can only use the portrait keyboard which can get tiring. The landscape keyboard will now be accessible in any app which to me is long overdue. If you don’t know already, the landscape keyboard has larger buttons, more buttons and the buttons are more spaced out.

Landscape Keyboard

Multimedia Messaging

This is such a basic feature yet it was not apparent to Apple to include it on the iPhone. Many of the basic cell phones have it yet one of the most sophisticated phones doesn’t (most sophisticated can be argued). If you bought the basic Apple iPhone, then you’ll be out of luck since it does not carry the required radio to run MMS on it.

Upgraded Bluetooth

If you own the newer version of the Apple iPhone you’ll now have the opportunity to buy wireless headphones/earphones to use with the upgraded bluetooth. Listening to music with Apple’s version of bluetooth headphones may be closer than you think.

Conclusion

The strange thing about this software is that for the people that would want it the most, it costs $0, or free, whichever way you flip it. For the people who might not need it and has less benefit, the Apple iPod Touch users, it costs $9.95 which makes me wonder who the sales and marketing department are.

One day I was sitting down at my desk and turned on my laptop. I was looking for a file when I realized I had lost it and could not recover it. It tought me a valuable lesson and that was to never delete a file because it might be important later on. That lesson got thrown out the window when I realized that I had too many files piling up and slowing down my computer. So I decided to install a program to help me recover deleted files if I ever needed them again. Microsoft Windows Vista creates shadow copies of every files you have and Ultimate utilizes it to recover them if you need it. Other version of Microsoft Windows Vista cannot recover it, unless you download another 3rd party program like ShadowExplorer or a file recovery utility such as Recuva.

ShadowExplorer

ShadowExplorer as I mentioned before allows you to browse the shadow copies created by the Windows Vista Volume Shadow Copy Service. It needs time to get going so don’t start deleting files as soon as you download it. What this program does is creates a copy of your hard drive for one day and you’ll have to access the deleted file from this day.

ShadowExplorer

This program is a great free alternative to the more expensive programs because it organizes your files at that specific day much better than most. Other programs tend to just show all the deleted files that can include internet cache stuff which is useless.

Recuva

Strangely enough, Recuva, is pronounced “recover” but who cares in my opinion because it is free. The problem I find with this type of recovery utility is the fact that it has to scan your whole hard drive, and not all of the files it finds can be recovered. It also names them different so you have to sift through the different files very carefully.

It is better than ShadowExplorer because it helps bring back files that were lost through a virus, bug or crash which ShadowExplorer doesn’t do as well at. It takes up a small area of your hard drive and you won’t lose much CPU when you run it but that comes with its drawbacks. It’s much slower at finding files because it has to scan whereas ShadowExplorer can almost instantly show you your hard drive at a certain date. The interface is slightly more refined but still equally usable.

Conclusion

Both of these programs will get the job done but offer two different ways to do it. Personally my bet is on ShadowExplorer but it’s better to be safe then sorry sometimes, so why not download both.

Apple has its App Store and when Google released the G1 phone, it also released the Android App Market. What happened when Microsoft released its Windows Mobile OS, well I think you know the story. It might just be a reason why Windows phones don’t sell as well as they used to. Well, now the story is about to change with the release of Windows Marketplace hopefully by the end of the year.

If you are a developer, expect Microsoft to start accepting registrations for a developer by Spring, mobile applications in the Summer, and then if you’re a user, expect to see Windows Marketplace on your phone when Windows Mobile 6.5 ships later this year.

There are many things alike between Apple, Google and Microsoft when it comes to their respective application marketplace including the initial annual cost of $99 to be able to submit there applications, developers getting a 70% cut of their app sales and being able to set their app prices. There is a difference though and Microsoft gets the advantage here. Microsoft allows students to submit applications for free through the Microsoft DreamSpark Program whereas Apple charges the same for everyone except they charge more ($299) if you are a company with over 500 employees.

Another big advantage Microsoft has if they continue on the right track, is they plan to make their approval process more streamlined. Apple has always been critized for the long process to get their apps approved and it is also very secretive. There have been stories where apps have mysteriously disappeared or were rejected without any reason. Microsoft plans to do the complete opposite by giving detailed feedback during and after the possible acceptance of their apps, having a more open system, and cutting down the time from submission to approval or rejection. In a statement by Microsoft, they said it wants developers to spend more time “writing innovative applications, and less time trying to navigate the approval process.”

Update: Blackberry is also planning to introduce its own App Store called App World but they are taking a slightly different approach. It will work with Blackberry devices running OS 4.2 or higher that either have a trackball or the Surepress touchscreen that is on the Blackberry Storm. Only available in the U.S., Canada and the U.K., Blackberry is aiming not at general consumers, but at the business market. You can register online to become a developer at RIM’s website.

The biggest difference is the pricepoints that Blackberry will skip. It will offer some free apps, but will not offer any apps at the $0.99 and $1.99 pricepoint which is usually the price that the topsellers on the App Store is sold for. The bizarre thing is they will sell Apps for a price of $999, the price at which 8 people bought a useless app called I Am Rich. Will there be another one for Blackberry?

When my friend at Cutedge went to make his first video post he had to go through many hoops to find a piece of software to record his computer screen as he went and did his tutorial. Now there is a website that will do this for free without having to download anything to your computer. The servic is called ScreenToaster. If you ask me, the second word could use some work as it doesn`t really reflect the service it offers.

In any case though, the service is great for something that is free. It offers a full array of options including a start menu which asks you what part of the screen you`d like to record, whether you`d like audio, and whether you`d like to use your webcam. The best thing about this service is that you can go to wherever you`d like to start your recording and then press (Alt+S).

After recording you can either upload the video to their site where they have multiple categories, upload it to YouTube, or you can download it to your computer as an .avi file for later enjoyment, better editing or anything else. Below is an example of the recording abilities you can have with this service. One thing I found while using it is it slows down the computer considerably so if your comptuer is already slow, then this isn’t for you.

I’m not an expert at this subject but I’ve been through the whole struggle and now my battery life can only last about 10-20min give or take. Now the sad thing is, there is no viagara type solution for these issues but there is a way to prevent your laptop battery from deteriorating at the beginning. I did not take any of what I’m about to tell you into consideration but I hope when you get a new laptop you take these four things into consideration when you’re travelling and one thing that will extend the life of your battery.

When Travelling

Turn Down Your Screeen Brightness - Screen brightness is not a big deal yet it takes away a lot of battery power that can be put to better use (like playing games). This is very easy to do. All you’ll need to do in Microsoft Windows Vista is go to Control Panel–>Hardware & Sound–>Power Options and then on the left sidebar, click Adjust the display brightness. Here you can also tell the computer when to turn off the display and power off depending if you’re plugged in or not.

microsoft windows vista control panel

Adjust the Computer Performance - Depending on what you’re doing while travelling, you might be able to sacrifice some performance to save some power. Microsoft Windows Vista has three plans that you can utilize: Power Saver, Balanced, and High Performance. I use Balanced most of the time, but there are times when I use the other two. You can tailor each of these plans to best suit your needs, but the one you should be focusing on is the Power Saver. Configure it so you’re using the least you can.

In most cases, you don’t need either of these because we have the Blackberry/Apple iPhone to do quick checks of email and such. It can be a real energy saver and can be as easy as flicking a switch off.

One secret a lot of people don’t know or might know and not really act on it, is the fact that the CD/DVD drive takes much more power then if you download and watch it directly.
New Lease on Life

The reason my laptop has very little battery life is I now have it plugged in 24/7. This destroys the laptop battery and speeds up the process of aging because then the battery doesn’t have the chance to discharge so it loses it’s ability to hold a charge.

A way to prevent this from happening is when you have your laptop plugged in all the time you remove the battery as it is not needed. When you hit the road, make sure to put it back in as well as double checking the battery is still charged.

On the same day Apple released an update for iTunes, Apple releases a new iPod Shuffle that has everyone talking, including the iPod Shuffle itself. The new Apple iPod Shuffle, scheduled to be released on April 3, 2009 has revolutionized the sub-$100 mp3 market, once again. Not only does it talk with its feature called VoiceOver, but it also is much smaller with a size of 1.8″ by 0.3″. This is about half the size of the previous generation, and that was small, but it is also smaller than a key! There are no controls on the actual device as they have been moved to earphone cord. The 4GB version, which can hold 1000 songs is available at a price of $79 USD or $99 CDN with two colours, black and silver. For some reason they’re phasing out the 2GB version, and keeping the 1GB. If anybody can explain this to me, be my guest.

New Apple iPod Shuffle

The new iPod Shuffle has some things that might shake your head, but that might just be because your listening to your tunes with it. In any case, I’ve spotted some flaws with it. First off, the headphones with VoiceOver are great but what happens if you lose it or break it. Then you’ll have to shell out another $50 for the earphones themselves and that’s about half the cost of the mp3 player. It’s almost like buying a printer and paying for an ink cartridge. Another small thing is the lack of colour in the lineup. Only silver and black Apple? Come on now. To coincide better with the Nano lineup, I think it’d be better if they released the same colours so one sibling who is older can have a Nano and the younger sibling can have a Shuffle in the same colour. Last but not least, is the fact that the controls are on the headphones so you have zero flexibility in respect to changing headphones (as they fall out of my ear) and if you are using it while running or it’s cold, some people like to loop their headphones under their clothes and then you have a problem with changing tracks.

With all it’s problems, comes benefits, definitely, in my opinion, outweighing the drawbacks. Previously you could not communicate with the Shuffle because the lack of a screen, but now it’s communicating with you, giving you an update when your battery needs charging or if you want the song/artist name, you can press a button and as the music volume dips, the iPod will tell you. On the new Shuffle, there is now the ability to have multiple playlists with the addition of VoiceOver. There are also 3 different modes of listening to your music, shuffle (if it didn’t have this feature, what would they call it?), straight, and just regular.

Conclusion

This is without any doubt in my mind that this is the best Apple iPod Shuffle to date. Who knows what they’ll think of next. My hope would be a way to call someone. But that’s just a wish, first they’ll have to do it on the Nano. What’s your wish?
