If one wonders what the distinct Homework sound is then much is to be found in their past aesthetic representation. When these two youngsters started messing around with turntables, back in 2007, they used to perform in immaculate white shirts and raven black ties. And even though longtime Dutch partners in musical crime Tom Waist and Zip Stolk have left this iconography behind, they still emanate an sense of clear-headed playfulness. Behind this swagger lies a wide-raging love for contemporary dance music that always comes in handy in the ever changing spheres of house music. Especially now that the genre is turning to ever stranger and/or vintage sources of inspiration with the likes of Round Table Knights, Jesse Rose, Renaissance Man, Claude Vonstroke and Mowgli, whom the duo draw much of their inspiration from.

After years of hunting for the freshest and most innovative sound, the two boys from Amsterdam really found their path when, in 2009, they hooked up with their friends The Heykids (“the kings of the Amsterdam underground scene”) to organize what is now considered as one of the most innovative and revered club nights in Amsterdam: TAFKAF. The night focused on the newest house sound: a unique amalgam of a deep minimal set up combined with an ‘anything goes’ hip-hop approach to sampling everything from Eastern chanting to Gypsy strumming. TAFKAF was the first party to present Amsterdam to the aforementioned ‘midget’ sound and its relevant players, bringing the city such talent as Solo (UK), Justin Martin, Renaissance Man and the New Judas crew. During those precious nights Homework saw their true calling. The realization of innovation overtook them. Since then they’ve always been looking for an innovative advance to music, sifting their way through trends and genres with the greatest of ease, always with a keen sense of class, style, aptitude and madness.

Much of their evolution as artists can be seen in their ever-changing production work. After long and hard work on a varied oeuvre of different material, the boys got catapulted into the international house scene through the release of their widely supported ‘Fissa Tune EP’ on Exploited and the accompanying hype surrounding the title track ‘Fissa Tune’, which, through consistent appraisal from the likes of Brodinski and Jesse Rose, found its way to many a chart and dj set.

Things are looking bright as a summer morning for the two youngsters and it seems their star can only rise to even greater heights. One thing is certain: wherever dance music goes, Homework will have found their way there, one step ahead of the hype, waiting for you to follow.

Berlin-based producer Siriusmo has released his new 5-track EP ‘The Plasterer Of Love’ on July 2th on Modeselektors Monkeytown. We like this EP alot and can’t stop grooving to it. Personal favourite is “Einmal in der Woche schreien”. Siriusmo debut album is planned for Spring next year, so meanwhile ,this new EP will keep you busy.

Listening to Yeah, Techno, Paul Chambers’s new EP, one cannot help but doubt the fact that this is his first major release.  Following internet hype in 2009, Chambers’s potential was finally realized and plans for his first album were made.  The title track, alone, drew thousands of fans and now, with its release on May 30th, the techno musician is facing his biggest crowds yet.  We talked to Chambers about his new album and reaction to all of his recent success.

After the success of “Heads Up” that stood in the playlists of people like VNNR, Larry Tee,
Moonbootica, Autodidakt and other big names, S-File comes with the next single. “Midnight Traffic”
is his latest single with official mixes by Anaylzer, Jumping Jack Flash and Asia’s Clash the Disko Kids.
A single a wide range of appeals. All three mixes give some promise. The young Düsseldorfer
producer Analyzer proves to his mixes for Boys Noize and Decalicious his abilities from new. Also the
Frankfurt’s Jumping Jack Flash presents a similar sound, that this mix is getting some support. From
the far Asia has Clash the Disko Kids Breaks style mix produced, which will certainly surprise some
people, because this is not the pure sound of the guys is typical. In any case, you should listen to this
mix precisely. Guys N Dolls proves the third release his claim to good club music …

The curiously named !!!, whose moniker can be pronounced by repeating any one-syllable percussive sound three times (e.g., “chk chk chk”), formed in 1996 after the demise of the mid-’90s hardcore act the Yah Mos. While on tour, members of the Yah Mos, including !!! singer Nic Offer, envisioned forming a band oriented more toward danceable music, and once they returned to Sacramento, CA, their hometown, they decided to turn their working concept into an actual group. The band quickly grew into an eight-member ensemble, including Mario Andreoni on guitar, Offer on vocals, Justin van der Volgen on bass, Dan Gorman on trumpet and percussion, Tyler Pope on guitar, Allan Wilson on saxophone and percussion, John Pugh on drums, and Jason Racine on percussion. Fusing the groove-oriented style of James Brown’s backing band with the edginess of Gang of Four and the Contortions and featuring an expansive percussive presence, !!! spent its first few years as a group developing its sound and playing at house parties for friends in Sacramento. At the same time, Offer, Pope, and van der Volgen were playing in a dub-inflected instrumental outfit called Out Hud with Molly Schnick and Phyllis Forbes, two musicians who used to be in the band Raoul. After putting out a 7″ on Hopscotch Records and a split single with Out Hud in 1998, the two bands decide to release a split full-length together in 1999, a release jointly sponsored by the Sacramento-based label Gold Standards Laboratories, founded by Sonny Kaye of Angel Hair and the VSS fame, and Zum, a San Francisco-based zine. After extensive touring of the States, which gave them a chance to further expand the songs they had written by placing them in the interactive context of a live show, !!! recorded and released a self-titled album on GSL in December 2000. Soon after, the band re-entered the studio and recorded enough material for a second album. Members of the band moved to New York, but the group still remained intact, planning regional tours and tape trades across the expanses of the Midwest. In 2003, the band issued Me and Giuliani Down by the School Yard (A True Story), their first release for Touch and Go. They followed it with 2004’s politically charged Louden Up Now (mixed by Maurice Fulton) and 2007’s relatively lighthearted Myth Takes.

Now they’re back with this new album “Strange Weather, Isn’t It? This is the group’s first album since the tragic death of drummer Jerry Fuchs. The album was co-produced by the band with Eric ‘Babytalk’ Broucek, the former in-house engineer for DFA. It was also recorded in Berlin, New York and Sacramento.

The album starts with “AM/FM,” which combines elements of late ‘80s Manchester (think groups like New Order) with the club music of ‘90s Berlin. Offer’s vocals blend well with the drum and bass dominated music. “Wannagain Wannagain” is a funky dance tune that features a wicked guitar solo in the middle, which gives it an ominous tone. This song features the band’s trademark synthesizer, which will make this a song that people can dance and bob their heads to all night long. The vibe of the album takes a turn on “Steady As The Sidewalk Cracks.” For the first time on the album, it doesn’t feel like there is a darkness looming over the song. The dance beats, combined with a subtle saxophone and guitar make for a fun song.

Strange Weather, Isn’t It?, though different in tone, does not disappoint. Though they’ve battled through a lot of adversity, !!! delivers an album of songs that will please core fans and dance music aficionados alike.
