Review – Beck @ El Rey Theatre

Every now and then a show comes along that puts all others to shame. Beck at El Rey Theatre was such a show. It was announced via the Goldenvoice Facebook page just a week prior. I wasn’t surprised that the show sold out instantly.

I arrived at El Rey about an hour and a half before Beck took the stage, and finding a ticket was no easy task. Eventually I ran across a buddy that had an extra ticket and I was in. Prior to coming to this show I was under the impression that Beck would have no opening act. It wasn’t until I was inside that I found out that one of my favorite comedians Demetri Martin had actually graced the stage. I was def bummed that I missed out on seeing Demetri, but since I made it in time to see Beck I couldn’t complain too much.

As Beck and his band took the stage, the crowd screamed and applauded more than the norm in Los Angeles. This was the first time in four years that Beck had played in his hometown, so he pulled put all the stops.

The set started off with Beck on the acoustic guitar performing “The Golden Age”, “Lost Cause”, “End of the Day”, “Dead Melodies” and “Sunday Sun”. Beck’s banter with his band mates and the crowd was highly engaging and entertaining. One special thing about this show was Beck was playing with the band involved with recording Sea Change, whom he hadn’t played with in a long time. Beck made sure to mention this fact a couple times during his set, so you could tell it meant a lot to him to be on stage with them again.

Beck – Already Dead (Live @ El Rey)

After Beck finished his mini acoustic set, he strapped on an electric ax and dove into Odelay’s “Where It’s At”. The song was met with enthusiasm from the crowd: everyone sang along.  He then went into another jam from Odelay “Hot Wax”. The song was funky and really got the crowd grooving. As the night went on Beck continued to please, dropping memorable songs such as “Black Tambourine”, “Paper Tiger”, “Modern Guilt”, “Soldier Jane”, “Already Dead”, “Guess I’m Doing  Fine”, “Gamma Ray”, “Devils Haircut” and “Loser” before walking offstage momentarily. When Beck returned he told us he was about to perform a song the band hadn’t practiced, warning us it might not be spot on. Earlier in the show Beck asked us what we wanted to hear. The vast majority of the crowd yelled “Deborah”, but a few people shouted out “Sissyneck”. Beck started to rock out the first few cords of “Sissyneck” during the set but it ended up just being a tease. For the encore I was sure that he was going to do “Deborah” but instead he went into the full version of “Sissyneck”. Although I would have rather heard “Deborah” over “Sissyneck” the song still absolutely killed. “The New Polution” and “E-Pro” finished out the set in a rocking fashion.

The entire show was spot on and def a crowd pleaser. I heard a  few complaints about the performance, one of which was that Beck hadn’t performed in four years and didn’t have any new material to share. I would have loved to have heard some new tunes but getting to see a 24 set of songs I knew brought no complaints from me. Beck performed eight songs off Odelay, seven from “Sea Change“, three off Modern Guilt, Two from Guero and The Information, and a single song off Mellow Gold and Mutations. Strangely enough, the only album Beck didn’t play a song from was Midnight Vultures.

One of my favorite things about seeing Beck live is bassist  Justin Meldal-Johnsen. Not only has Justin been a long time Beck contributor, but he was also the touring bassist for Nine Inch Nails for several years. Justin has a real way with the crowd and an incredible musical ability. Getting to see Justin play the bass is always a treat, and he is the perfect onstage sidekick for Beck. In closin,g four years was far too long to be without Beck and I hope that it’s not another four years before I get to see him again.

The Dandy Warhols @ The Wiltern Concert Review

The Dandy Warhols were one of my favorite bands in high school, but somehow I had only managed to see them one time prior to this show.  Every time I tried to see them, something totally random or strange happened that caused me to miss the show. This go-around def had its bumps in the road as well.

I started my night off by attending the launch of a cool new website called Love My Provider.com. The site is designed to help parents with special needs children and those with special needs find good and caring doctors. I had never heard of a site like this before and truly believe that it will do a lot of good in the world.

The party was popping and I ended up leaving a little later than I had originally planed. I arrived at the Wiltern after the box office had closed. It took some doing, but I eventually was able to track down my tickets and managed to only miss nine songs of the 22-song set performed by The Dandy Warhols.

I walked into the Wiltern midway through “(You Came in) Burned,” and the first thing I thought to myself was how have I not seen these guys more than just once before. The band was really rocking, and the vibe in the venue was infectious. Lead singer Courtney Taylor-Taylor was there the entertain and did a great job of doing so. After “(You Came in) Burned” was finished, the entire band except Courtney left the stage, this was the segue to an acoustic performance of  ”Everyday Should Be A Holiday”. I did not recognize the song, but was enchanted by its sweet melody and Courtney’s connection to the crowd.

The Dandy Warhols rocked out another four tracks before they reached a track that I recognized, “Horse Pills,” off the band’s 2000 release 13 Tales of Urban Bohemia. The band then jumped into several tracks off the album, including their hit, “Bohemian Like You.” The song lit the crowd on fire and had us all singing and dancing.

The Dandy Warhols followed it up by rocking out “Get Off” and “Godless.” After the band finished their set, Courtney stated that he knows a good rock show and that we all had def seen one. He also professed that they weren’t one of those bands that left the stage before the encore then began to play one last diddy, “Country Leaver.”

I am really glad that I got to see The Dandy Warhols, but was surprised that the Wiltern wasn’t even half full. The Warhols nemesis, Brian Jones Town Massacre, had played the same venue just weeks before and packed the place. Regardless, The Dandy Warhols killed it and brought the vibe of the North West to Los Angeles flawlessly.

Review – Lazerfest 2012 @ Central Iowa Expo

Another Lazerfest has come and gone. It was moved to the Central Iowa Expo Center in Boone, Iowa this year. The old location had a lot of traffic problems and was notorious for being a hellish mud pit when the weather didn’t cooperate. The decision may have kept some fans away (not knowing how the new location would pan out), but those who went said they liked it better. This year, the attendance was about 15,000 compared to 23,000 in 2011. The had the two-stage setup, which is awesome; one band is playing, while one is tearing down – very little downtime in between bands.

Okay, now for the bands! Dead Horse Trauma, a local band that won the contest to open Lazerfest: First off, this is a very cool thing for a band trying to make it, getting them tons of exposure. They played their hearts out and sounded great! Next up, was a Canadian band – Art of Dying. I liked these guys. They had ton of energy. Singer Jonny Hetherington really worked the crowd well. Next, was Black Stone Cherry, a good rock band that’s been around a few years now. Their guitar player was a ball of fire – all over the stage. He was one of my favorites to shoot that day.

Next up, was Adelitas Way. This band is gaining a lot of steam. Everytime I turn around, they are coming through on another tour with someone. The singer did some crowd-surfing to end their set, which was quite good.  P.O.D. was up next. They are a killer live band. While standing in the photo pit, their drummer, Noah Bernardo Jr., threw a stick that landed right by me. I noticed a young fan drooling at it and let him have it for a nice Lazerfest souvenir. There were guitar picks flying around all day as well.

The next artist was Sebastian Bach. The last time I was him live, he was fronting Skid Row, and they were opening for Bon Jovi. it must have been around 1989. He still has the showmanship that he did back then. The band had the crowd worked up into a pretty good frenzy. Next, was my favorite of the day – Volbeat. These guys took the stage, and basically, just kicked my ass musically for an hour. They opened their set with their hit, “A Warrior’s Call.” The guitar player touring with them is Hank Shermann of Mercyful Fate fame. He’s amazing, and I hope he stays with them for awhile.

Buckcherry was next and was definitely a crowd favorite. They are a fun party band. They put on a great set. Theory of a Deadman were at last year’s Lazerfest.  This was my 3rd time seeing them, and they are another great live band that is everywhere right now. Next, was Chevelle. I’m just getting into these guys. I really dig them. I can’t get enough of their new single, “Face to the Floor.”  They ended their set with it, and the crowd went crazy!

Slash…one of the very few rock stars that everyone knows who they are. You can’t mistake him with that top hat. He totally tore it up! Would you expect anything other than an incredible performance by Slash? This was my first time seeing him live, and his guitar-playing is phenomenal. Some of best photos of the day were of him. Five Finger Death Punch is a favorite of mine. These guys are on fire right now and are one of the best live bands I’ve seen recently. They have a blast up onstage, and you can tell they truly love their fans. They co-headlined the festival with Shinedown, which played last. I’ve seen them a few times before. They always put on a great show, but they are more polished now. This was an amazing day of rock n’ roll. It was a perfect 75-degree-day. I’m sure the attendance will be back up to par next year, as this year’s was a success at the new location.

Snow Patrol @ The Palladium Concert Review

I had seen only seen Snow Patrol once and it was several years ago and a very short set. I remembered very little about the show except that Snow Patrol had it going on. When it was announced that the Irish rockers would be returning to the states I honestly didn’t put much thought into seeing them. The day of the show came and I teeter tottered back and forth about going. Around 8:45 I received a text from a friend letting me know that she had a ticket from me. Snow Patrol was set to go on at 9pm sharp and I was going to miss the first 20 min or so but decided that it would be worth checking them out and I’m sure glad that I did.

Through a random chance occurrence I ended up walking in with Silversun Pickups bassist Nikki Monninger. I didn’t think much about it at the moment, but as we reached the Palladium stage Snow Patrols lead singer Gary Lightbody started to dedicate a song to his good friends Silversun Pickups, who just released their third album Neck of the Woods. I have to say it was pretty cool to be standing next to someone as a song was being dedicated to them.

I was surprised at how many people were at the Palladium. I had asked a lot of my friends come to the show and none of them really seemed like they were interested. When I got to the venue it was packed and the show was actually sold out.

Another thing that really surprised me was how many Snow Patrol songs I actually knew. I thought the only song I knew was there 2006 hit “Chasing Cars”. As the show progressed I found that I recognized a lot of their songs including “Chocolate” and “Set the Fire to the Third Bar” which featured special guest Ed Sheerean, who was the bands supporting act on this tour. It had been reported earlier in the day on Perezhilton.com that Ed had recently dropped off the tour due to personal reasons . Lightbody joked with the audience and assured us the it was really Sheerean and not a hologram. The 18 song set showcased a good chunk of songs off the bands latest release Fallen Empires. During one of the new jams “Called Out in the Dark” Lightbody and company brought out a special guest that had worked with them on the album, Queens of the Stone Age The Age  guitarist Troy Van Leeuwen. The vast majority of the set featured older tunes most of which were off the 2006 release Eyes Open including “Shut Your Eyes”, “Your All I Have” and ” Make This Go On Forever”.

I had never listened to Snow Patrols music extensively as I found it to be to polished and cookie cutter. Their live set however was far above par. Gary Lightody’s stage presence and command over the crowd is not often seen. I am not sure the last time I saw a crowd so captivated. The all around musicianship of the band was stellar. Especially that of lead guitarist Nathan Connolly in my opinion stole the show with his powerful rifts.  This concert was a truly great experience and if you are looking for a solid show Snow Patrol is where it’s at. I look forward to seeing these fellows the next time they are state side.

You probably best know Hugh Laurie from his role on the hit Fox drama House, but there is a good chance a lot of you didn’t know that he is also a successful Blues musician. Although Laurie hasn’t received a lot of attention for his music in the states he has been met with critical acclaim over seas. Hugh Laurie’s & the Copper Bottom band are currently playing in support of their first release Let Them Talk. The Album came out a little over a year ago and features collaborations with Tom Jones and Dr John.
