Are you a Windows user who is curious to try Linux (Ubuntu in particular) because you have heard so many good things about the OS from your geek friends?

There are two ways to use Linux on a Windows computer. You can either install the full Linux OS alongside Windows, or if you are just starting with Linux for the first time, the other easy option is that you run Linux virtually with making any change to your existing Windows setup.

The former option will offer the best performance because all your system resources will be available to Linux but the latter option is absolutely risk-free and therefore recommended for novice users. You’ll be able to test drive Linux but without changing a single file on your Windows computer.

Running Linux with Windows – Your Options

Let’s look at some of the easiest ways to use Linux on a Windows computer. Linux is available in multiple flavors (your friends may call them Linux distros) but here, let’s focus on the desktop edition of Ubuntu, perhaps the most popular and actively developed Linux distribution.

A: Test-Drive Linux Online as a Web App

Perhaps the easiest way to try Linux on your Windows Desktop is inside your web browser. Go to edubuntu.org, fill that simple form and within a minute, you’ll have the full version of Ubuntu Linux running on your desktop inside a Java applet.

There’s absolutely no need to download or install anything on your computer and a single session can last up to two hours. You get access to all the features that are available in the standard desktop edition of Ubuntu Linux including the ability to download and install new packages from the Linux repository.

B: Run Linux from a USB Stick or a CD

The most popular option to test-drive Linux on Windows is a LiveCD. Though it says “CD,” you can also use a USB Flash Drive as a LiveCD (without having to burn a CD).

To get started, download the latest version of Ubuntu to your desktop. This is an ISO file (also known as a CD image) that is around 650 MB in size. If you don’t have a great Internet connection, you can always borrow the Ubuntu CD from a friend (yes, its perfectly legal) or order a readymade live CD from OSDisc.com.

Once you have Ubuntu ISO image file, grab an empty USB disk and use UNetbootin to quickly turn that USB drive into a bootable Ubuntu disk for Ubuntu without having to burn a CD. Insert the bootable USB flash drive into your Windows computer and reboot. If this doesn’t work, go to the BIOS boot menu and change the boot sequence.

You should see an option at the boot menu that says “Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer” – choose that and you are good to go. Once inside Linux, you can install new programs, create files and everything else that you normally do at a computer though your changes won’t be written to the disk.

The Ubuntu portal has more details on creating and troubleshooting a LiveCD.

C: Run Linux in a Virtual Machine

The term virtualization may sound very geeky but in simple English, all it means is that you can another OS over an existing OS. For instance, you can run Windows on a Mac or you may install Linux on a Windows 7 machine using virtualization software.

To get started, download and install the free VMware Player on your Windows desktop. Then download the VMware image for Ubuntu and extract the zip file (I use PeaZip). Now double-click the Ubuntu.vmx file that you just extracted and the Linux virtual machine will load inside the VMWare Player. Simple!

Technically, Linux will be the “guest” operating system while “Windows” will be considered the host OS. And other than VMware, you may also VirtualBox to run Linux inside windows. The VirtualBox installer and the Ubuntu Linux images for VirtualBox for can be downloaded for free from oracle.com.

D: Install Linux like a Windows Software

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could install Linux like a native Windows app – something like Microsoft Office? For instance, if you have Office running on Windows, you can always uninstall the software later without affecting any other Windows programs or system settings.

Meet Wubi – short for Windows-based UBuntu Installer - a tiny utility that will help you install Ubuntu Linux alongside any other Windows application. Run the installer, choose a password for your Linux environment and the software does the rest.

It will download the necessary Linux ISO from the Internet and will install it on your machine. Alternatively, if you have previously download the ISO, you can just place the .iso file in the same folder as Wubi and it will pick it up.

Now the next time you restart / reboot your computer, it will offer you a choice of Linux (Ubuntu) and Windows. This is a real Linux installation and thus the overall performance should be good as well. If you ever want to uninstall Linux, simple boot into Windows, go to the Add-Remove problems and uninstall Wubi.

E: Run Linux inside the Web Browser

If you are just starting to learn Linux and are looking for an easy way to practice the various Linux commands, check out the very-impressive JSLinux project.

This is an emulator that lets you use Linux inside your web browser. You may write shells scripts using Sed and Awk, master regular expressions, play around with popular text editors like Vi and Emacs, look up man pages of various Linux command and much more – all inside your browser.

Sony wasn’t kidding around when they said they would only make smartphones and abandon feature phones completely. But we feel they’ve reached a point where it’s a little ridiculous now and they seem to be getting really sloppy with their launches. A case in point is the Xperia ion, a phone that shouldn’t exist, but still does, only because Sony was too lazy to think things through when designing their high-end model the first time around. On paper, it’s nothing more than the Xperia S wrapped in a metal chassis with a microSD card slot. Is it really just this or is there anything more to justify the huge price premium? Let’s find out.
Design and Build

Sony has ditched the plastic chassis and gone with a more sophisticated look with the ion. The phone is encased in metal with plastic bits on the top and bottom for the radios to function. The curved back and smooth finish add some flair to an otherwise blocky design. Dimensions and weight wise, it’s nearly identical to the Xperia S so you won’t notice much of a difference. Sony has fitted a slightly larger 4.6-inch screen on the ion as compared to the 4.3-inch one on the Xperia S. It still has the same HD resolution and is an LED-backlit LCD with scratch-resistant glass.

Sleek and stylish

On the front, we have the 1.3MP front facing camera along with the proximity sensor, notification LED and ambient light sensor. Speaking of the latter, Sony hasn’t included an auto-brightness option in the settings so even though this sensor is present, it’s pretty much useless. We don’t know what possessed Sony to make this decision, but yes, their brand new flagship does not have auto-brightness! This is also the only high-end Xperia to have four capacitive buttons instead of three, and none of them work well. First of all, the labels don’t light up themselves; instead we have four horizontal dashes that do, which is useless, since in the dark you don’t know which label you’re actually hitting till you’re quite familiar with the phone. That’s not all; the sensitivity of the capacitive buttons is very weak, just like the Xperia S. You’ll find yourself pressing each one a couple of times before your touch is registered, which is extremely frustrating.

HDMI onboard

The microUSB and HDMI ports are covered with a flap on the left while the power button, volume rocker and camera button sit on the right with the 3.5mm headphone jack sitting on the top. We came across another annoying design flaw with the power button: it’s a little bit too recessed for you to access it comfortably. Also, the extra piece of metal just above the button with the ‘Power’ symbol on it actually feels like the power button. The rest of the buttons work just fine though. The phone’s grip doesn’t feel reassuring in your hands and if you’re not careful, if will slip out. We do like the fact that the chassis is metal so it’s a lot more durable.

Features

Interface

This is Sony’s first high-end smartphone to ship with Android Ice Cream Sandwich out-of-the-box but due to their own skin, there are plenty of hiccups in overall performance. You’ll notice slight lags when browsing through home screens or apps right from the get go. And it’s not like the phone is a slouch; it’s powered by the same Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8260 SoC used in the Xperia S.

Same as before

At 1.5GHz, the UI should be absolutely fluid but sadly it’s far from it. Nothing has changed with the interface and it’s the same one we’ve come across on all Xperia phones of late so we won’t get into that too much. Since this is ICS, they have changed the way you add widgets to the home screen slightly. Long pressing on the home screen brings up a little icon in the upper left hand corner, from where you can change the theme or wallpaper.

Media

The media player is the new revamped one we’ve seen on the new NXT line of Xperia phones but once again, since this is ICS, Sony has changed the graphics and layout slightly. The music player widget now also displays album art and Sony has added a lock screen widget as well, allowing you to skip songs without having to unlock the screen. You get a 5-band graphic equalizer along with a bunch of presets and some other audio enhancements. The sound quality is very good though and the bundled headset provides good ambient noise isolation. The speaker on the other hand is just plain horrible for anything other than notification tones. Even with XLoud on, the sound is flat and very weak and the EQ is no help here.

Speakers are not very good

The video player is a little disappointing since you only get the stock Android player, which only plays MP4 and WMV. You do have options to stream video via DLNA though. The Xperia ion handles 1080p videos like a champ without skipping a frame. HD videos look especially good due to the densely packed screen. Colour reproduction is accurate and colours are rich and well saturated, without going overboard. Format support can be expanded via third party players from the Play store.

The company further adds that DSC-RX100 is the world’s first 1.0-type Exmor CMOS sensor with a resolution of 20.2 effective megapixels. The sensor has an area that’s around four times larger than the 1/2.3-type imager in regular point-and-shoot cameras. Sony India adds that it captures far more light than small-sensor cameras and is the key to beautiful, detail packed images and Full HD movie clips with very low noise.

Sony India launches Cyber-shot DSC RX100

The larger sensor is partnered with an ultra-bright Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T lens with 3.6x optical zoom range. In contrast with standard point-and-shoot cameras, the wide F1.8 maximum aperture lets in more light to complement the resolving power of the large 1.0-type Exmor CMOS sensor, the company adds further.

In common with high-performance DSLR optics, the lens features seven-bladed circular aperture. This makes it easy to produce pro-style defocused effects, with subjects in sharp focus against a smoothly-blurred background, claims the company. The lens also features an Advanced Aspherical (AA) glass element that contributes to the camera’s extremely compact dimensions without sacrificing optical performance or resolution, Sony India adds.

The optimised BIONZ image processor maximises shooting responses while assuring exceptionally clean, natural images. Speedy burst shooting at up to 10 frames per second (full-resolution) lets you grab split-second photo opportunities, while high-speed autofocus locks onto your target in as little as 0.13 seconds, claims Sony India.

The official statement further adds that even if you’re shooting outdoors, it’s easy to see subtle details and tones on the bright, high contrast 7.5cm (3″) Xtra Fine LCD. With a 1229k dot resolution, the screen debuts new WhiteMagic technology that uses white pixels in addition to RGB to boost screen brightness. It’s easy to fine-tune one’s image with a wide range of manual adjustments, either while shooting stills or Full HD video.

The DSC-RX100 features a Control Ring that surrounds the lens body and the company mentions that it allows smooth, fingertip adjustment of exposure, zoom, picture effect and other functions; it makes versatile DSLR-style creative control over one’s image easily accessible.

Frequently used functions can be assigned to a handy Fn (function) button for instant access. Memory Recall stores up to three groups of settings for instant recall – a big time-saver when you don’t want to keep adjusting parameters for favourite scenes.

Just like a DSLR camera, users have a choice of auto and manual focus modes for greater control over their image, adds Sony India. If you’re focusing manually, MF Assist magnifies your image to simplify fine adjustments. There’s also a convenient Peaking function that highlights sharply-focused areas of the image on screen.

Sony India further claims that there’s a generous choice of artistic options to expand shooting possibilities for enthusiasts and novice photographers alike. It’s easy to fine-tune the look of your image with a choice of six creative styles to suit the scene or your personal preference. Picture Effect offers an inspiring choice of ‘in camera’ effects that can be previewed on the LCD screen, including Toy Camera, Partial Colour, Pop Colour, HDR Painting, Miniature, Illustration, Watercolour and other (Note: real-time preview not available with all Picture Effect settings).

Shared with the latest ? range of A-mount and E-mount cameras, Auto Portrait Framing makes it simple to capture personality-packed photos of family and friends. The official statement further adds that Cyber-shot does all the hard work, automatically detecting faces and cropping the scene to create tighter, pro-style compositions without sacrificing pixel count.

Sony India has priced the DSC-RX100 at Rs.34,990 and it is available at select Sony Center and key camera stores across India.

Overview

TeraCopy is a software designed to help you transfer files easier, faster and safer. It is programmed to copy files at maximum speed and skip bad files in order to achieve faster completion of the transfer. But before skipping, it will try again to copy the corrupt file and after a few unsuccessful tries it will ignore it and move on to the next ones. You also have the ability to pause the process and resume it at a later time.

Installation

It is very easy to install TeraCopy, you just need to follow some simple steps. In one of the first few steps you will see an overview of the program’s features and requirements. A few steps afterwards you will be asked what kind of installation you want to make; normal or portable. They don’t have many differences, mainly that in portable mode TeraCopy.exe can launched from any computer. You have the option to associate TeraCopy with .md5 and .sfv files as well. When installation is over you will be presented with the changelog of the version you installed.

The program can run perfectly under any Windows XP, Vista or 7 OS.

Interface

Very simple and clean interface without graphics that consume much RAM and processing power.

The main window has two bars, one for showing the status of the current file that is being copied and one for the status of the whole process. You can drag and drop files in the first bar and choose a target folder in the second. When you’re done, you can choose between copying or moving files. There are a few buttons between the two bars, which control actions of the program when transfer is complete. Those include shutting down the computer, eject drive, run test or close window.

If you click on the “More” button, the window will be expanded with more options. You can see details of the files to be transferred, and a menu button at the bottom right corner.

Pros

TeraCopy is programmed to transfer files between locations faster than the normal Windows transfer function. If you want to copy many or big files, then you can pause the process at any given moment to free up system resources and resume it later. This is one of the most useful features of the software.

If a file is being used, locked or corrupt then TeraCopy will not get stuck on it. It will try to transfer the file nonetheless, and if after some tries it hasn’t succeeded yet it will skip the file and continue with the rest of the files. After the task has finished, you can view a list of the files failed to copy and try to transfer them again.

The fact that shell integration is supported makes it even more useful. Copy and move functions in Explorer are replaced by TeraCopy’s corresponding functions, saving you time from opening the program every time.

Cons

The program has no bugs and is updated regularly to improve user experience. It would be a lie if we said that it has any drawbacks. It works fine, is very simple, uses very few system resources and has no unnecessary features.

Alternatives

TeraCopy Pro has everything that TeraCopy has, plus a few more features, including moving and copying files to your favorite folders, saving reports as CSV and HTML files, selecting files with the same extension in a folder and removing selected files from the copy queue. For a small price you can add those features to TeraCopy and work with it even easier. Other alternatives include Ultracopier (free),SuperCopier (free), FastCopy (free), Copy Handler (free), Total Copy (free), ExtremeCopy (free) and Copywhiz (paid, formerly known as “Piky Basket”). All of them are reliable software with many features.

Conclusion

If you have often problems with Explorer’s copy and move functions or if you just think that’s it’s not fast or good enough, then don’t hesitate taking a look at TeraCopy. It is free and does a very good job in transferring files fast and easy.

Microsoft today unveiled the “release preview” version of Windows 8 which mostly indicates that the new Windows operating system is feature-complete. Windows 8 Release Preview is available as a free download and it is very likely that your existing system specs are good enough to run Windows 8.

The System Requirements for Windows 8

According to this Windows 8 FAQ, any machine equipped with 1 GB of RAM, 16 GB of hard disk space and 1 GHz processor should be able to handle Windows 8. The minimum RAM requirements are 2 GB in case you would like to install the 64-bit version of Windows 8.

Should you download Windows 8 Setup or the ISO Image?

As you may have noticed on the Windows 8 download page, the installation of Windows 8 can be done in two ways.

You can either take the easiest route and download the Windows 8 Setup program – that’s also the default option.

Alternatively, you can download ISO Images of Windows 8.

If you are planning to install Windows 8 on your existing computer, either on a different partition (dual-boot) or just want to upgrade from an older version of Windows to Windows 8, the default Setup program is a good choice.

Please note that that your installed software programs will only be preserved if you are upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8. If your planning to install Windows 8 on top of Windows XP or Vista, only the files will be preserved but not the various software programs that you may have on the disk.

The Windows 8 ISO image may be more handy in other situations like:

Your computer has an x64 processor but is currently running the 32-bit version of Windows. If you want to install the 64-bit version of Windows 8, download the 64-bit ISO.

You want to install Windows 8 on your Mac (iMac or Macbook) using Boot Camp software.

You want to install Windows 8 on multiple computers. In that case, you can download the ISO once, create a bootable DVD and boot the other systems using this newly created Windows 8 disk.

You plan to run Windows 8 as a Virtual Machine inside your existing copy of Windows.

You are running Windows XP.

Download Window 8

The universal product key for Windows 8 is TK8TP-9JN6P-7X7WW-RFFTV-B7QPF.

Will my software programs run inside Windows 8?

Before grabbing the ISO image of Windows 8, quickly run this setup utility and it will show a list of all software programs and hardware drivers on your system that are compatible with Windows 8. Alternatively, you can visit this page to see a list of all known software and hardware devices that are found to be working with Windows 8.

How should I go about installing Windows 8?

You can have Windows 8 on your computer in three ways – you can install Windows 8 side-by-side (also known as dual-boot), as a virtual machine (so that it runs inside your existing Windows just like any other software) or you can have Windows 8 as your primary OS (there’s no going back from here).

If you just want to try out Windows 8 but without modifying any of your existing set-up, the safest bet is to use a Virtual Machine. If you have a vacant disk partition or don’t mind creating one (it’s easy), go for the dual-boot option. Else, if you have a spare computer, you can consider upgrading to Windows 8 overwriting the previous installation of Windows.

Also note that if you are upgrading from Windows 8 Consumer Preview to the new Windows 8 Release Preview, none of your installed programs, files and account settings will be preserved though everything would be moved to the windows.old folder.

The Internet is running rife with rumours surrounding the next iPad. Joining in on the bandwagon is Digitimes and it has recently reported that Apple’s manufacturing partners will start to roll out 4 million units of the 7.85-inch tablet per month beginning this September.

The report states, “Supply volume of Apple’s 7.85-inch iPad is estimated to reach four million units per month starting in September in order to prepare for demand from year-end holidays, according to sources from the upstream supply chain. Rumors are circulating in the IT market that Apple will launch its 7.85-inch iPad in October with a thinner screen frame to allow the device to feature a bigger display area than other competing products and will also feature a resolution similar to that of iPad 2.”

The report further states that sources claim that the supply chain had already begun production of the tablet since June at a volume of around several hundred thousand per month.

iPad Mini launch is near…

The report ends by stating that their sources have implied that the pricing of this smaller tablet would be at $299, i.e. more than that of its rivals, the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Google Nexus 7. They state that though this is the case, the specs table from Apple would still definitely be able to give them competition.

If Apple is indeed currently mass producing the 7.85-inch iPad, this could indicate that the launch is near. Earlier this year, there had been reports doing the rounds indicating that Apple was testing a tablet with a smaller display, but hadn’t decided yet whether to proceed with the production.

It may be really interesting to see if Apple does launch an iPad with a lower budget, as the brand has lost a significant amount of market share to 7-inch tablets. The main competitor is the Amazon Kindle Fire, which has eaten quite a bit of Apple’s share in the tablet market, in comparison to other tablets.

As for the launch of this smaller iPad, there have been various rumours indicating that Apple would unveil it at the time it announces the next generation iPhone aka the iPhone 5. However, a journalist who has close connections with Apple has refuted this possibility. And as per a report by Apple Insider, John Grubber, in a post titled ‘Sharing the Stage’ stated, “I’m thinking it makes more sense for Apple to hold two events. First, an iPhone event, focused solely on the new iPhone and iOS 6. Then, the iPhone ships nine days later, and there’s another wave of iPhone-focused attention as the reviews come out. Then, in the first or second week of October, Apple holds its traditional “music event”, exactly along the lines of the events at which they’ve been debuting new iPods for the last decade.”

Megastar Amitabh Bachchan believes these are good times for the Hindi film industry as movies are regularly minting Rs 100 crore and plus at the box office.

“It’s a great time for the industry. More the business, the earnings, the better it is,” the 69-year-old said here.

“Last year, the film industry was going through a bad phase. Most films were not working. But it is good to see that lately films are doing good business,” he added.

Amitabh will soon be seen hosting the sixth season of game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC), and admits it has helped him increase his knowledge base.

“The amount of knowledge I get from here (KBC), I don’t get outside. I’m grateful to KBC because of which my knowledge is also increasing,” he said.

The first season of KBC went on air in 2000 on Star Plus. After four seasons, the show shifted to Sony last year and now the sixth season of the game show is ready to go on air Sep 7.
