So we wanted to chat with her about the sudden death of one of our favorites, and how power – both corporate and personal – played in to the events that led to Poussey’s untimely death.

It’s an enlightening and informed piece about taking action within your community – even if you are white – to raise awareness of the Black Lives Matter movement. Also, we talk about the horrific death of Darius Robinson, a young man who was killed in an Oklahoma jail by guards using unauthorized choke holds and pepper spray. Aleida (Elizabeth Rodriguez) gets out of Litchfield just in time, but things aren’t perfect. Upon her release, she gets no support from any services and is left to fend on her own. This is an ugly reality that faces so many people getting released from prison, and we applaud Elizabeth Rodriguez for conveying the quiet desperation of Aleida’s situation with such humanity.

Veronique Hoebeke from Resources to Recover joins us on our Orange is the New Black podcast this week to discuss the very real issues that face individuals who have served their time and are returning to their communities. We also chat about mental health, the dynamics of power, and whether or not The Wiz is really the worst.

On this week’s Orange is the New Black podcast, we focused on children of incarcerated parents, addiction, civil disobedience, and whether or not the show misrepresents veterans.

Orange is the New Black might just be changing lives in the real world. Last week, the Department of Justice announced that they would be phasing out the use of private prisons. Did OITNB have something to do with it? It’s definitely possible. Orange is the New Black is at the forefront of progressive pop-culture as they wrap important issues in an entertaining package and get people to care. By opening a dialogue, the Netflix series has taught thousands – maybe millions –  about the mass incarceration crisis in the United States.

Here at our humble Orange is the New Black podcast, we strive to continue that conversation. This week, Hidden Remote staff writer Brad Tilles joined me. We had a great talk about a whole host of weighty issues including rape, trauma, and addiction. (Side note: If you’ve ever wanted to know a bit more about how I approach addiction treatment in my career as a therapist, you’re definitely in luck.)

Recommended Reading: Dive into a wealth of information on children who have parents in jail. Time incarcerated not only affects the person serving the sentence, but it also has an impact on their entire family. As women with children are a rapidly growing percentage of the prison population, this issue deserves a closer look. The great folks over at CTCIP are doing fine work researching the issue and implementing policies that can effect change. Do yourself a favor and check it out.
