The 2013 Venice Art Walk and Auctions proudly celebrates the achievements of two signature artists: Larry Bell and John Van Hamersveld.

Larry Bell is a contemporary American artist and sculptor whose 40 years of work can be found in the collections of many of the world’s top art aficionados, public spaces, major museums and cultural institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum; Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles.

John Van Hamersveld is a renowned graphic designer, illustrator and artist perhaps best known for creating the brilliant and instantly iconic image for “The Endless Summer,” the seminal 1966 surf movie by Bruce Brown. As signature artist, Van Hamersveld created the graphic imagery and logo for the 2013 Venice Art Walk & Auctions.

The curatorial committee for the 2013 Venice Art Walk & Auctions is composed of influential leaders in the art, architecture and philanthropy communities including Robert Berman, Laddie John Dill, Andrea Fiuczynski, John Geresi, David Hertz, Constance Lawton, Sam Lubell, Leo Marmol, Laura Maslon, Eliza Osborne, Barbara Schwan, Ali Subotnick, and Billie Milam Weisman.

The relocated Family Fun Day will feature games, music and family-friendly activities outside the Google Los Angeles headquarters in Venice. A community celebration featuring food trucks, music and live performances will enliven the closed-off block behind Google on Hampton Drive between Sunset Ave. and Rose Ave.

The Venice ArtBlock Map features studios walking distance from Google / Art Walk headquarters

While the ArtBlock crew should be commended on their DIY attitude, their belittling of the “expensive ticket(s)” and “wristband(s)” of the Venice Art Walk misses the entire point of the day: the event is a fundraiser for the Venice Family Clinic. Hopefully next year the two groups can work out their differences, or at the very least the ArtBlock crew can try and raise money for the awesome Venice Family Clinic while crashing their party.

At 6:30 am on my daily walk I came across this 4′ White Shark.

I was able to throw it back in the water, and a surfer took it on his board past the rocks and let it swim away.

While you can’t have alcoholic beverages on the beach, The Sidewalk Cafe is located right next to the park and the music can be heard from their patio! Grab a drink and relax at the Sidewalk! The new Bank of Venice (from the owners of the Venice Ale House) will also be open at 80 Windward and offering “Spring Fling” drink specials all day long, so you can grab drinks and food there too!

Hi Venice! My mother is suffering from mental illness and has moved to Venice Beach without a home. She said she was sleeping in a garage in an alley on Washington Avenue Pier. I have no clue to this area, and unfortunately that’s as specific as I can be. Her name is Torie and she is 48 years old.

She lived in Kansas City before moving to LA. She also has been through a couple hospitals and mentally-ill-reintegration-into-society-type places in the LA area. Now she is living on the streets, and last time I heard from her was on Facebook. My guess is she walked to a library to send me the information.

I don’t want to file a missing person’s report, but if anyone spots her it would truly help me locate her. I’ll be coming to search for her in person next Saturday (25th) to take her to temporary housing.

I’m not asking for much, just that if there is a chance for me to locate her then I’ll take anything. I would be in awe if anyone would be able to help me narrow my search.

Architect and designer Ron Radziner of firm Marmol Radziner has sold his 4,025-square-foot home in Venice, Calif. for $4.4 million, the highest price ever paid for a single-family house in the area, according to Mark Kitching of Partners Trust.

Mr. Radziner built the four-bedroom, four-bathroom home six years ago and has lived in it with his wife and children since then. Known locally as the Vienna Way Residence, the home is renowned for its architectural details, including floor-to-ceiling glazed walls, clerestory windows, and a sunken kitchen that anchors the home, connecting its public and private areas.

The new restaurant is named after the first documented occupant of the building, The Bank of Venice, which opened the space at the turn of the century, as seen in the picture below!

Like the Venice Ale House, the Bank of Venice will focus on organic fare, featuring a menu based on Pacific Rim and Pacific Northwest cuisine. The “Bank” will serve 30 local ales and 24+ California offerings on the wine wall. Soju fresh fruit cocktail infusions will also be served.

The kitchen will be headed up by Chef Jason Feehrer, who has split his professional career between Hawaii (Palm Café, considered one of the finest on the “big island”) and British Columbia (Sooke Harbor House, one of BC’s “top restaurants”). Feehrer specializes in sustainable seafood and meats, serving all GMO, hormone and antibiotic free fare.

The new menu includes Megan’s Meatloaf (prepared daily with Paso Prime grass-fed ground beef), Bangers and Mash (sausage courtesy of Neiman Ranch) and Mac & Cheese (with gluten-free noodles and 60-day raw, aged cheddar). Dishes brought over from The Venice Ale House include Tom’s Catch-of-the-Day Ceviche, classic Mussels Sauvignon (from Carlsbad, CA) and Seared Sea Scallops with garlic sautéd spinach and mashers.

The “Bank” will be open from noon until midnight on weekdays and noon until 2am on weekends.

The Spring Fling performance lineup is as follows: Samba dance act Samba Da Mudanca, acoustic songstress Stephanie Lallouz (Hunny Bunch), American Tribal Style (ATS) Bellydance and Drums, L.A.-based funk and soul band The Mason Affair, psychedelic rock act Corty Byron (with full band), Ya Harissa Bellydance Theater, punk/prog rock newcomers Mars and the Massacre, funk/soul/spoken-word all-star band Scunc (featuring Michael Jost of Sugarbitch and multi-platinum drummer and producer Andy Kravitz), surf rock/reggae band Meet Me at the Pub, The Chuck Dukowski Sextet (Black Flag bassist Dukowski with Milo Gonzalez of Insects vs. Robots), and the quintessential Los Angeles ska band The Untouchables.

The Gallery will close on June 30th after 7 years in business on Abbot Kinney. Rent increases are to blame for the closure of the space and Gallery relocation.

Each of these Los Angeles-based artists create works which investigate the dynamics of layering, in wildly unique ways, often times with transcendental or meditative concerns.

Lillian Abel paints in waves of color, resulting in compositions which inhabit a space not quite landscape nor abstracted color field, but somewhere in-between.

Susan Feldman constructs “ladders” of reclaimed wood, yarn, and jute. These climbing tools serve to lift and transcend, if ever so delicately bound to their earthly constraints.

Karrie Ross is a prolific painter immersed in the continuous application of energy, revealing a divine sense of order & purpose, amidst seemingly chaotic components.

Sal said when they were ready to go public he would “call (me) first” for the “exclusive”, but it looks like our always awesome friend Caroline on Crack got his partners to spill the beans first. Anyway, it appears Sal and his partner Mario Guddemi are teaming up once again with chef Antonia Lofaso (Black Market) and Pablo Moix and Steve Livigni (Black Market, La Descarga, Harvard & Stone) to create an as of yet unnamed restaurant featuring a cocktail bar named “Old Lightning” in the space, which they expect to open in June.

Caroline notes that the “Old Lightning” bar will be attached to Lofaso’s 5,000 sq ft restaurant and seat 25 people. Cocktails will range in price from $10 to $20, but there may be some $25 margaritas thrown into the mix. The decor is expected to be “done up like a swinging midcentury bachelor pad”. Barkeep Steve Livigni says:

“We’re not going to let people in in flipflops and shorts. No beach attire. We’re not going to be as stringent as Pour Vous and La Descarga where people have to have jackets but we’re going to expect people to show up looking nice.”

As the bar is located in Marina del Rey, the dress code might fly … but then again, they might want to reconsider the “Hollywood-ish” dress code if they want to embrace the Venice crowd to their north.

In COLORFORM, Paddy continues exploring the senses with portraiture, focusing this time on anonymous women and the inherent beauty of both their bodies and what they cover them with. We get the sense we are peeking into some uncomfortably private moments.

COLORFORM was shot entirely with a Polaroid 600SE, known in the world of “instant photographers” as the Goose. The camera has been his addiction since picking it up four years ago. Not ideological about the film/digital divide, Wilkins uses every tool available when making images, using digital to test elements like lighting and composition before committing them to Polaroid. The results are always exciting, strengthening and enhance the story being told.

Wilkins makes photography, media art, films and conceptual artworks. While most of his work includes elements of portraiture, Wilkins develops forms that often do not follow logical criteria but are based on subjective associations and formal parallels, his pieces often incite the viewer to make their own personal conclusions. In 2012, Wilkins co-produced the award-winning documentary Heartland: A Portrait of Survival, about the role of photographs in the rebuilding Joplin, MO, after it was decimated by a tornado. Wilkins currently lives and works in Venice, California.
