PlanetSolar is a multlihull vessel topped by a large array of photovoltaic solar panels, constructed by Knierim Yacht Club, in Kiel, Germany. Currently at the design stage, it will be a boat of impressive proportions, and yet it will be both silent and clean. The goal is to navigate around the world at an average speed of 8 knots — no mean feat for a solar-powered craft.

The multihull will be home to two sailors during the round-the-world attempt, and can accommodate up to fifty people during the promotional trips planned at each port of call.

The ideal shape and size of the boat for the chosen route will be determined by in-depth research. The PlanetSolar engineers have to factor in a host of parameters — propulsion, solar panel design, energy storage, materials, and the external environment. A whole range of studies will need to be conducted in areas such as the boat's hydro and aerodynamics, the materials used, the management and storage of energy and, finally, the power plant and the optimal routing.

There are 3 commonly used units for measuring luminous flux, though they are not used in the same purpose. However, they are light-related. They are Candela(cd), Lumen(lm), and Lux(lx).

Luminous Flux
In photometry, luminous flux or luminous power is the measure of the perceived power of light. It differs from radiant flux, the measure of the total power of light emitted, in that luminous flux is adjusted to reflect the varying sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths of light.

The candela is the SI unit of luminous intensity; that is, power emitted by a light source in a particular direction, weighted by the luminosity function (a standardized model of the sensitivity of the human eye to different wavelengths, also known as the luminous efficiency function). A common candle emits light with a luminous intensity of roughly one candela. If emission in some directions is blocked by an opaque barrier, the emission would still be approximately one candela in the directions that are not obscured.

Lux versus lumen
The difference between the lux and the lumen is that the lux takes into account the area over which the luminous flux is spread. However, the same 1,000 lumens, spread out over ten square metres, produces a dimmer illuminance of only 100 lux.

Radiant Flux
In radiometry, radiant flux or radiant power is the measure of the total power of electromagnetic radiation (including infrared, ultraviolet, and visible light). The power may be the total emitted from a source, or the total landing on a particular surface.
The SI unit of radiant flux is the watt (W), which has dimensions of energy/time or, in SI units joules/second.

Human race has moved into a brand new year, a brand new decade, 2010.

Happy new year to everybody!

In this holidays, I went to Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia for a vacation. Chocolate and beer are so cheap there!~ Because they are duty-free there.

Two more days, I am going to study at INTI International College Penang. I took Diploma in Electric and Electronic Engineering course.

So, my holidays will be ended here. My journey to high education starts here~

----------Movie: Avatar----------

Since last December, a hot movie named Avatar have been showing in theater.

Avatar is a 2009 American science fiction epic film written and directed by James Cameron, and starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver and Stephen Lang. The film is set in the year 2154 on Pandora, a fictional Earth-like moon in a distant planetary system. Humans are engaged in mining Pandora's reserves of a precious mineral, while the Na'vi — the sapient and sentient race of humanoids indigenous to the moon — resist the colonists' expansion, which threatens the continued existence of the Na'vi and the Pandoran ecosystem. The film's title refers to the remotely controlled, genetically engineered human-Na'vi bodies used by the film's human characters to interact with the natives.

READ THIS:

Avatar had been in development since 1994 by Cameron, who wrote an 80-page scriptment for the film. Filming was supposed to take place after the completion of Titanic, and the film would have been released in 1999, but according to Cameron, "technology needed to catch up" with his vision of the film.

He is so pro, the technology cannot even produce what he was imagining in 1994.
Anyway, I wish I have a chance to watch this great movie in theater, even better in 3D!

KUALA LUMPUR: Friendster, one of the most popular social networking sites in the world, is now owned by a Malaysian company.

The new owner, MOL Global Pte Ltd, is a newly-formed entity spawned from the recent MOL AccessPortal Bhd acquisition of California-based Friendster Inc.

The merger of the two companies is aimed at creating Asia’s largest end-to-end content, distribution and commerce network.

This will be achieved through the pairing of MOL’s offline retail channel partners and payment platform with Friendster’s large online footprint, social network and user community in Asia.

Friendster has 115 million members worldwide, with more than 75 million registered users in Asia alone. Today, 80% of its Asian members are youths aged between 16 and 24.

“We are creating a unique company that will be well positioned to provide content to a huge, regional user base, especially here in Asia,” said newly appointed MOL Global Group CEO Ganesh Kumar Bangah. Friendster’s former CEO, Richard Kimber, is now the non-executive chairman.

Bangah said a wide array of merchandise via MOL, such as games, goods, gifts, music and videos, will now be made available to the Friendster community.

MOL — an MSC Malaysia-status company whose business is payment solutions — has more than 500,000 physical and virtual payment channels across 75 countries for its content and services. Its core markets are Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Thailand and India.

The company also has relationships with more than 70 online games publishers, which in total provide more than 200 titles. It also has partnerships covering music, movie and video content.

Future plans

Earlier this month, Friendster announced several initiatives that will see it focusing more on the Asian youth market, including a rebranding exercise and redesigned webpages with emphasise on Asian relevance.

According to Bangah, MOL Global will continue with these directions set by the previous Friendster management before the merger.

“At the same time, we will look at combining both our valued assets to create Asia’s biggest content distribution and e-commerce platform,” he said.

Kimber said the deal provides Friendster with the kind of financial backing and resources — such as retail distribution centres and e-commerce infrastructure — to further the social networking site’s development.

“This merger enables us to accelerate our strategy and create more locally relevant, fun experiences for our users both on and offfline,” he said.

The offices of both MOL and Friendster around the world, including the Friendster headquarters in Mountain View, California, will be retained, said Bangah.

“In countries where both companies operate, such as Singapore and the Philippines, we will combine the staff and resources,” he added.

Friendster’s rivals include the popular Facebook and MySpace social networking sites, as well as local sites JomSocial and Ruumz.

The principal shareholder of MOL is Tan Sri Vincent Tan who is chairman and CEO of Berjaya Corporation Bhd.

When floating ice melts, does water level rise?

Seed Expert Claude Baudoin writes:

Water expands when it freezes, so you might think that when it melts and reduces in size, the water level will go down. Alternatively, because part of the ice floats the water, you might think that when it melts, the water level will rise.

Neither is true, as explained by Archimedes principles.

When an ice cube (or an iceberg, which is a big ice cube) floats in water, then by definition the weight of the ice cube is exactly equal to the buoyancy force, which is equal to the weight of the displaced water.

When the ice cube melts, its volume changes, but its weight is conserved (law of the conservation of mass). So the melted water from the ice cube has exactly the same weight as the water that was displaced by the ice cube when it was frozen -- therefore the volume of melted water fits exactly in the previously displaced volume -- and the water level stays the same.

Note that this argument applies only if the ice cube is made of the same water as the water that it is floating in. This is true, for example, with the Arctic ice pack, which is made of frozen sea water. However, it is not true for Antarctic icebergs, which are blocks of fresh-water ice from the continent that are floating in salt-water sea. In this case, we must take into account that the salt water is denser than the fresh water. The fresh-water iceberg still weighs as much as the weight of the displaced salt water, but because of the difference in density, the volume of melted fresh water will be slightly greater than the displaced volume of salt water -- so when the iceberg melts, the water level will rise, although the difference is very small.

If the ice is melting due to a rise in temperature of the water, then the water level might rise because of thermal expansion - related to, but not because of, the ice melting.

If the ice was totally or partly supported on the bottom of the vessel (or sea), then when it melts the water level will certainly rise. In the limit, if there was no water in the vessel at the start of the experiment, there clearly will be at the end, and it is obvious the water level has risen. This is a key problem resulting from global warming – melting ice that was covering land areas such as Antarctica and Greenland is adding to sea levels.

This is an important date to SPM candidates, which means
17 days left to the exam.

At 30/10/2009, a graduation ceremony was held in the hall of
CLB. I attended the ceremony. I was graduated! I am going to
leave this school after taking the SPM.

I posted some photos in my blog yesterday. The photos have made
a total of 31 visitors to my blog, which is the highest view in the
last few months. Cheers!

Okay... it is near the end of 2009 in a blink of eyes.
From the time I stepped into 5SA1, I have been in this lovely
class for 10 months.
My friends and I made fun, played, laughed, walked into discipline
room and being scolded together.
The important exam in my life is awaiting me.

Yup, I am going to graduate. My Form 5 life is going to end, my High school life is going to end too. In about 20 more days, I will be sitting for SPM(Malaysia Education Certificate). Then, I will be leaving my school, Chung Ling High School Butterworth, I will be leaving my lovely friends. We will be pursuing our own study, our own career.
