Yukon Brewing Company was a sponsor of the Edmonton Cracker Cats this past summer, the semi-pro baseball team in Edmonton. As such, our beer was available all summer long at Telus Field in Edmonton. Part of our sponsorship was to provide a trip for two to the Yukon for two lucky winners. This trip was made possible through the help of our partners Uncommon Journeys and Air North.

The winners were Jim and Elizabeth Findlay, who are originally from Scotland but living in Edmonton. Jim and Elizabeth arrived in Whitehorse late in the evening and were whisked off to the lodge at Uncommon Journeys. The next day, they were helicoptered up for two days of hiking, eating, and drinking. Not a bad way to spend a weekend.

Rod Taylor of Uncommon Journeys brought Jim and Elizabeth to the brewery for a tour and some samples prior to heading to the airport for their flight home. Unfortunately, we all managed to miss the fact that the Air North schedule changed to winter hours that very day, and the flight to Edmonton left at 2:55, not 4:00 pm. We got them to the airport just in time to watch the plane taxi away.

Deb Ryan at Air North jumped to the rescue, booking them onto a flight to Vancouver the next morning and home via Westjet later that day. Since Jim and Elizabeth had never been to Vancouver, they decided to take a late flight home so that they could spend the day in Vancouver. Talk about making lemonade from lemons.

We must say that Deb Ryan stepped up to the plate, big time. She was right on to Jim and Elizabeth’s problem, rebooking flights, finding them a hotel, and then touring them around town before dropping them off. No wonder Air North keeps getting the compliments.

And, as Jim said after getting home, “Leave it to a Scotsman to miss his flight while standing in a brewery drinking samples”.

In the fall of 2003, Midnight Sun Coffee Roasters, a local Whitehorse coffee company that roasts their coffee fresh here in the north, approached us with an idea. Zola Dore (the Yukon Bean Queen) was enjoying a home brewed espresso stout she was producing at a local U-brew. Her idea was that Yukon Brewing Company could produce it commercially. We used this idea to launch a series of beers (if you can call two a series…but who knows what the future will bring) made in partnership with a Yukon company. To say that our brewmaster outdid himself is perhaps not going far enough. By the time he was finished creating, he had a beer with eight different malts (that’s right, Alice, eight malts) not to mention oatmeal and, of course, espresso coffee. The result is a beer that is fine as frog’s hair, full bodied yet smooth, rich with coffee aromas and flavours without ever losing sight of the fact that it’s beer.

If you have recently visited us here at the brewery or your local liquor store you will have noticed there is a little something different about the Yukon Gold. No no, we didn’t go messing with the recipe. It is still the same great beer we have grown to love… just with a new look.

After seeing what Natalie Parenteau’s design did for our Yukon Red box it was an easy decision to commision another local artist to design the look of the new Yukon Gold. Lynn Blaikie answered the call and the result has been a bright and beautiful design for Gold’s boxes, cans and labels.

Lynn’s main area of expertise is batik, but she also makes use of watercolours and acrylics to create her fantastic art.

You can check out the new look Yukon Gold on six-packs of bottles or cans, 15 packs of cans and very soon, Gold will be available in 12 packs of bottles.

Enjoy the new look for an old (and current) favourite!

Recently, construction has commenced on a new addition on the back end of the Yukon Brewing Company’s existing home. The addition, which has been in the Breweries’ plans for awhile, will allow for larger scale brewing operations to take place.

The Yukon Brewing Company will now have to decide what the new addition will house. More bright beer tanks and larger canning and bottling stations could be in the plans as well as the possibility of a distilling operation, which would almost certainly require the square footage offered by the new portion of the building.

The addition should be completed and ready for operations sometime in the fall.

For many years, distilling spirits and liquors here in the Yukon has appeared like a dream that would never be realized due to prohibitive legislation… until now.

On Friday, June 15, 2007, the Legislative Assembly of the Yukon ended its current session for the summer months but not before it passed Bill Number 34 amending the outdated Yukon Liquor Act.

The biggest change to the act is that where the Liquor Corporation could grant a “brewer’s license” and a “brewer’s retail license”, it now grants a “liquor manufacturer’s license” or a “liquor manufacturer’s retail license”. A liquor manufacturer is defined as a manufacturer of beer, spirits or wine.

This exciting change of legislation means that the Yukon Brewing Company could venture into distilling spirits within a few short months. This will no doubt precipitate some exciting times here at Yukon Brewing as we excitedly take the steps to produce a range of spirits that the North can be proud of…. and that’ll keep us warm during the cold winter season.

We had a visit today from a guy named Yves Leblanc who is snowmobiling across the country in an effort to get into the Guiness Book of Records. Given that it is -27C out today with a brutal north wind blowing a goodly bit, it is pretty chilly just standing around. Imagine ripping along at 100 km per hour on the back of a snow machine. The good news is, there is plenty of snow. If you want to learn more about Yves Leblanc and his quest, check out http://www.odysseedesneiges.ca and follow him along. It sure is a pleasure, though, when people who are on such a massive undertaking take the time to pay us a visit.

This Irish treat is great in a slow cooker! If you don’t have one fret not, you can make this stew on the stove top too!

Beef & Espresso Stout Stew Recipe

Ingredients
2 pounds lean stewing beef
3 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons flour
Salt and freshly ground pepper and a pinch of cayenne
2 large onions, coarsely chopped
1 large clove garlic, crushed (optional)
2 tablespoons tomato puree, dissolved in 4 tablespoons water
1-1/4 cups espresso stout beer
2 cups carrots, cut into chunks
Sprig of thyme

Instructions

Trim the meat of any fat or gristle, cut into cubes of 2 inches (5cm) and toss them in a bowl with 1 tablespoon oil. Season the flour with salt, freshly ground pepper and a pinch or two of cayenne. Toss the meat in the mixture.

Heat the remaining oil in a wide frying pan over a high heat. Brown the meat on all sides. Add the onions, crushed garlic and tomato puree to the pan, cover and cook gently for about 5 minutes.

Transfer the contents of the pan to a casserole, and pour some of the stout into the frying pan. Bring to a boil and stir to dissolve the caramelized meat juices on the pan.

Pour onto the meat with the remaining stout; add the carrots and the thyme. Stir, taste, and add a little more salt if necessary.

Cover with the lid of the casserole and simmer very gently until the meat is tender—2 to 3 hours. The stew may be cooked on top of the stove or in a low oven at 300 degrees F. Taste and correct the seasoning. Scatter with lots of chopped parsley.

Yield: 6 to 8 servings

“The Northern brewery makes some great stuff but this one most definitely is, as they say, “Beer worth freezin’ for.” Made from a blend of six different malts and mellowed a full two months before packaging, this potent sleeper is loaded with a great blend of sweet malt, bread, chocolate, roasted barley, and a hint of cherry. Finishing dry, it’s also full bodied and creamy with only a mild carbonation so the whole six pack can (and should) be consumed in one greedy sitting.”

For three years, Yukoners have been asking us, “Brewery guys, when are you going to give us a good old lager beer at a good old lager price?!” Finally in May 2000, we caved in to peer pressure and created our own chemical-free alternative to the big brand lagers.

Crisp and clean, pure and natural, Chilkoot Lager is everything you want in a lager. Light and effervescent, without that nasty chemical tang, Chilkoot Lager goes down smooth and easy. The crisp clean taste will quench your thirst and leave you asking for more...and the price is right!

If you are going to have a mainstream style beer, you need mainstream containers. Chilkoot is available in bottles (6 packs, 12 packs, and 24 packs) and cans (6 packs and 15 packs) in the Yukon.

In Alberta, Chilkoot is available in six packs of bottles only. If you live in B.C., you will not find Chilkoot. If you want to know why, contact the brewery and we will fill you in.

If you want to know what the big guys would produce if they left the additives out, give Chilkoot a try!

When we were designing our flagship brands, we knew we would not please everybody, so we went for diversity; our Yukon Red is substantially different than our Yukon Gold. But what has surprised us most is that our local Yukoners have taken both of our flagship brands to heart (and to dinner, and to parties...) and drank almost equivalent quantities of each! This speaks volumes for the apparent consumer cravings for beers with flavour, and Yukon Red is about flavour.

The drink starts with a mug displaying a deep bronze colour, but the beer is crystal clear. The head is an abundant fine mousse (pronounced ‘moose’ for the cabin crowd), cream coloured and just spilling over the rim of the glass (if you got the good waitress, Yukon trained and all). As you raise the mug, your senses catch the fine aromas permeating from the glass, clean malty sweetness touched by spicy hop esters.

The first draw of the ale cools the parched lips and moistens the cheeks. Full malt body takes over the palate; not sweet, but bold, fruity and persistent. A snap of clean hop bitter grabs the back of the tongue and springs into the sinus cavity, blending with the caramel flavours that have wafted back with the nectar that is this ale. But the swallow goes down clean, almost dry, and leaves only a slight lingering presence of the abundant flavours that were just there, and now gone!

Many more draws on the mug, many more mouth-filling flavour experiences, and always that clean finish, saying “How about another?!!”.

Can you tell that this is the head brewers favourite? All you expect in a true ale, and as arresting as the Spell of the Yukon.
