zCast

No podcasts for ages... What's going on?

It's fair to say that zCast has not been very active lately! It's now almost twelve months to the day since the last edition was published. I've found that producing a podcast is not as easy as it first appeared -- it's difficult to find material, and when you do... as one colleague of mine knows too well, it's hard to find time to produce that material.

The other aspect of zCast that failed in the past was the NEWS format. I'm too far from the centre of System z development or places where the action is to have anything much to offer in this regard.

I do want to contine the zCast in some form -- and I think I know what that form will be. I want to get back into the groove of doing the show with some informational programs about zSeries (System z). A sort of "what's cool about this platform" set of programs. Maybe something will develop after that series...

To those who have offered support and encouragement, I thank you! I will do my best to not let you down.

Format changes, and next editions being planned

Based on feedback on our first edition (thanks!), zCast will be delivered in two formats. For busy work-day listeners who can only grab a couple of minutes between phone calls, e-mails and IMs, zCast NEWS will be ideal: a short, sharp newsflash program of around three minutes to bring you up-to-date with what's happening. zCast TALK is what you need if you're looking for indepth analysis, discussion and talkback.
The next editions of zCast are being planned right now, so if there's topics you are interested in then let us know!

Upon trying to register zCast to the iTunes Music Store Podcast directory, I've hit a bit of a snag due to the iTunes Music Store not being offered in my geography (Australia). You don't need to join the Store to subscribe to podcasts, but you do need to be a member to create a podcast listing. Sigh.

iTunes users don't miss out, however! You can still subscribe to zCast manually. In the Advanced menu, select Subscribe to Podcast... Enter the URL for the RSS feed, which is http://feeds.feedburner.com/zCast. iTunes will do its thing!

First episode of zCast recorded!

The first edition of the zCast Podcast was recorded on the evening of August 30. Since I'm still getting the hang of the process and fine-tuning my podcasting style, there's a lot of editing required! I had planned to publish (if that's the right word) the first episode tonight (August 31) but it looks like a couple more days are going to be needed to finish the programme off.

If all goes according to plan, zCast will be a companion blog to a podcast called, strangely enough, zCast. I don't know yet how often zCast will be produced, how long the programs will run for, or what the content will be. What I do know is that the show will concentrate on zSeries (and for those lucky enough, System z9) -- hence the name.

Oh and by the way, being a true speaker of the English language the pronunciation will be zed-Cast! :)
