Or worse, they don’t think they need a website at all.

Website 101
If your business is a hobby, you probably don’t need a website. But if you want to have bustling business that produces a healthy bottom line, a great website is a must. Here’s why:

Introduce your unique brand

Showcase your expertise

Boost your credibility as a business entity

Educate clients and prospects about what your company does and whom you serve. Among those prospects are “launch pad” people who might not be interested in doing business now, but might want to do so someday. There will also be browsers who have friends, family, colleagues and other contacts presently seeking your services.

Engage a huge pool of people on your terms for pennies a day

Have a 24 hour/365 day-a-year sales force

1. Studies show that more than 70 percent of consumers use the internet every day to find goods and services. Don’t be fooled into thinking it appeals only to the teen and 20-something crowd. My 80-something mother is one of those consumers, and more of her pals join the pack daily.

2. Almost everyone expects you to have a website. It doesn’t matter whether you’re opening a pizzeria that caters to customers within a five-mile radius or you want to engage corporate consulting clients in the U.S. and Denmark. A well-made website can help you connect with your target markets and–more importantly–drive sales.

3. A great website is a terrific guerilla marketing communications tool. It enables companies of every size to strut their stuff globally.

4. It also allows you to:

5. A well-written, artfully designed, user-friendly site sifts through your prospects for you. It generates stronger leads from folks who truly “get” what you do, while less-serious surfers or potential prospects will most likely click away to other sites. That means less wasted time for you and your staff.

Tech Talk You Need to Know
Your website is a multilayered entity. There’s the side that consumers see when they land on your online “storefront”: the layout, your unique “look,” colors, menu tabs, testimonials and, if done correctly, many blatant opportunities to contact you or to order now. (The copy should be hyperlinked to open e-mail windows or a shopping cart if you are selling online). What your net visitor physically sees is based on the website’s construction and coding. Properly constructed websites allow you (or your designated web administrative assistant) to make updates without affecting your site’s established layout. Even if you’re the most technologically challenged person on the planet, you can handle this–provided you construct your site to allow this feature at the get-go or if you use additional software, such as Contribute or ActivEdit 5.0.

Strong coding is essential because it helps the search engines read and classify the information on your site. That means you need to make sure the right metatag titles and descriptions are used on each page (keywords specific to the content that site visitors see).

There are good reasons to be hyper-compulsive about this.

You want prospects to be able to find your site directly (by typing your name and/or your company name into their favorite search engine), as well as through indirect (industry, product or service-based) searches.

For example, if you’re an interior designer, you want to be found when a prospect types in “interior designers, your county, your state.” What’s more, if your site is set up and coded correctly, it will be ranked organically higher on the results list when prospects use major search engines such as Google, Yahoo and MSN typing in specific keywords.

That means you’re less likely to have to pay extra to hire a company to improve your search rankings for a monthly fee. Special web copywriters, experienced webmasters and SEO (search engine optimization) specialists can help you achieve better organic rankings if they do things correctly the first time.

Understand that creating a website isn’t a “onesie.” Your site needs continual nurturing. Update your site regularly with new content and have an independent SEO professional conduct an annual assessment/update so that your title tags, alt tags, etc. are in line with the latest algorithms introduced by the major search engines. This proactive approach will help your site consistently rank higher on search results.

“In addition to a mindful, aesthetically pleasing design, a website must be tailored specifically to its target audience. It must engage the visitors, resonate with their values and connect to them using understandable language,” says Pamela Cisneros, a creative web whiz at Zafari Inc. in Charleston, South Carolina.

Zafari helps clients with identity, branding, graphics, and website design and development. According to Cisneros, winning websites sport navigation systems that are simple, intuitive and provide several means of getting to the core content.

More Winning Website Tips from Zafari:

Graphics, images, animation and video are mainstays of today’s websites, but Cisneros cautions that these cool tools should be used with purpose. Pay attention to the needs of the audience and the reason(s) people visit the site. Avoid Las Vegas-style action, strident music and too much use of Flash: It can be distracting and annoying.

On the other hand, Cisneros says, if the audience will be inspired by a visually exciting and engaging experience, such as the upbeat music and animal sounds found on Zafari’s site, then by all means, “wow them.”

Outstanding website development must employ proven methods for optimal search engine placement. This means analyzing the content, ensuring its usefulness to the visitor and developing/hosting the site in accordance with the best SEO practices.

Says Cisneros: “What good is a fantastic website if it can’t be found via the search engines? Research, analyze and adjust the content moderately over time, and your message will be received.”

Take a hard look at your website. Review everything from the look to the back-end metatag data and strategic inbound and outbound links. Also review your site’s traffic analytics, which your hosting company should be able to provide.

Are folks visiting and then bouncing away? Are they lingering on certain pages and clicking through for more info? Assess what works, develop a strategy and fix what isn’t effective.

If you’ve good a good handle on your target markets and ongoing, professional action from your personal net team, you can turn a bland, nonperforming site into the active sales engine it should be.

For small business owners marketing is about generating sales opportunities so that your business can grow.

Concepts such as brand building and customer relationship management may seem slightly more nebulous in terms of immediate impact on revenue, but it is this type of activity that will assist in achieving customer loyalty. Loyal customers generate invaluable Word of Mouth (WoM) referrals and provide repeat business, reducing your cost of sale.

Whatever the size of your business, successful marketing relies on a combination of long-term strategy with short-term plan of action for maximum impact. Here are some top tips for marketing success:

1. To fail to plan is to plan to fail
Creating a marketing plan is an essential starting point. Once you have a plan, this should become a manual for marketing activity and should be reviewed and updated regularly. Start with a
'
top-down
'
approach. Establish a clear vision for your business; define your brand values and your messages from the outset. Once this is clear, all your campaigns should fit with the overall image and messaging that you want to portray.

2. Knowledge is power - get market savvy
Before you can decide where you want to go, you need to know where you are starting from. Define your market, whether geographically or in terms of products/services, establish who your key competitors are and their strengths and weaknesses, consider what your customers views are of your company and other stakeholders such as press and industry commentators.

3. Know your competitors
Keeping one eye on the competition is an essential ingredient for success in any marketing strategy. Marketing campaigns, news, changes in pricing or policies by your competitors can have a direct impact on your customers
'
perceptions. Stay one step ahead of the competition, pre-empting and reacting to their news where appropriate.

4. Set clear objectives
Setting clear goals is crucial to ensure that marketing activity is focused and measurable. Be specific about your objectives, set a timeline for achieving them and make sure they are realistic.

5. Talk to your customers
Building a rapport with your customers will not only help you to create a loyal, customer fan base, but will also ensure that any occasional glitches in service delivery are forgiven. In today
'
s consumer age, an opinion, good or bad, is only a click away, so make sure that you provide customers with regular news and updates and provide an open channel for communication.
Although some were braver than others jumping on any and every twirling, swirling, make-your-stomach turn ride (eh-hem Sara), all the Zafarians had a blast. With warm sun on our shoulders and fried temptations at every corner, the Zafarians threw off the cloak of professionalism and let our inner children run free. We knew it was time to leave, though, when Brian started fighting with an 8-year-old for a spot in the cotton candy line. Can
'
t wait for the fair to come back next year!

Needing a break from all that produce, she found her oasis at the College of Charleston gaining a B.S. in Business Administration in the process. You can also find this Sweet Southern Sensation at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Company, serving up the best Shrimp n Grits in town, just be sure to tip her well! And when she is not in a suit, or wearing an apron, you can find her dilly-dallying around the garage, fixing the guy-next-door’s lawnmower or on the water catching all the Rainbow Trout! She escapes life by designing, building, and fixing things, so keep a look out for this one as she works her magic here at Zafari!

If you are like most small business owners, you spend sleepless nights worrying about how you will acquire customers and grow sales. Therefore, marketing your business effectively becomes a critical component to your overall success.

Even if your company does not have a formal marketing or business plan yet, there are many cost-efficient things you can do to market and promote your company’s products and services. Here are 10 simple, tactical ideas to put your marketing efforts on the right track:

Leverage Your Current Customers
Happy customers are your best sales people — ask them to provide testimonials and/or references for prospects. Consider establishing a customer referral program, and provide free/discounted services or a monetary reward for every customer that they recommend.

Develop Alliance Partners
Form strategic partnerships with others who sell a complimentary product or service to your target market. These alliances can be as simple as sharing contacts and leads, or they might take on a more formal structure. Either way, the goal is to broaden your reach beyond your own network.

Become An Industry Leader
People like to buy from subject matter experts. Therefore, look for opportunities to share your skills and talents by writing articles or lecturing on a topic within your area of expertise. Even teaching a night course at the local college or community level will give you additional exposure.

Don’t Be Afraid To Try
If you are serious about growth, spend time outside your comfort zone and try new things. Sometimes new ideas will work, and other times they won’t. Either way, the process will teach you something new and valuable about yourself and your business.

Brainstorm With Others
You are in business for yourself, but that does not mean you need to have all the answers yourself. Whether you are a natural born marketer or one that sees marketing concepts as completely foreign, kick around ideas with others whose opinions and values you trust. You never know where your next “big idea” will come from.

Normally when people are told to Get Lost its usually followed by rolling eyes or a snarky retort. But when Sara told Clint to Get lost after he threw a dry eraser at her, it inspired a completely different reaction. The Zafarians decided that getting lost for the day would be the perfect way to get out and experience the beautiful Spring weather in Charleston before the city turned into a sultry version of The Birds. Except in this case the birds are actually man-eating mosquitoes. With that the Zafarians set out for Bull Island to do some alligator spotting and collect marine artifacts.

If you are like most small business owners, you spend sleepless nights worrying about how you will acquire customers and grow sales. Therefore, marketing your business effectively becomes a critical component to your overall success.

Even if your company does not have a formal marketing or business plan yet, there are many cost-efficient things you can do to market and promote your companys products and services. Here are 10 simple, tactical ideas to put your marketing efforts on the right track:

1. Focus on Your Core Competencies

Know your target market and the value your product or service will bring to them. Focus your sales and marketing efforts towards these groups. Avoid spending time trying to acquire customers you cannot properly serve.

2. Develop a Clear and Concise Message

Create a 30 to 60-second statement that clearly explains what you do, for whom, and why your target audience should buy from you. Have this message become your companys mission statement and raison dêtre. Practice your message and notice how your target audience reacts to it.

3. Use Professional Materials

Nothing says you are a viable business more than having a polished, professional company logo, business cards, stationery, brochures, and possibly even a web site. Keep it all simple, and do not order more than a 3-6 month supply of printed materials. Once these pieces are in place, use them everywhere!
4. Join Networking Groups

Join or form one or two networking groups with individuals you do not know very well. Tell people what you do and who your target market is. Help others by connecting them with potential suppliers or employers. In time, they will return the favor to you.
5. Network Every Day

Networking is not limited to groups and networking meetings. Carry your business cards with you at all times and be prepared to talk about your companys mission statement at a moments notice. Your next hot prospect might be standing behind you at the grocery store.
