Hard to be a Pinoy!?

A few days ago, I saw a BBC documentary about the toughest place to be a bus driver. Well, guess what ... they chose Manila --- the most densely populated city in the world! That wasn't from me ... that was really how they described Manila.

Josh, a London bus driver went to Manila and tried driving not a standard bus but our very own JEEPNEY! He also had to stay in the house of a Pinoy jeepney driver, Mang Rogelio. Josh is one giant man who drives a humongous double decker bus. See the look in his face when he saw Mang Rogelio's tiny jeepney.

The main point of the show was to compare the job of a London bus driver to that of a Manila jeepney driver. But the program showed more than that. Poor housing, population problem, and hunger were presented throughout the show.

While watching, I've read some comments ... mostly from my fellow Filipinos. Some felt embarrassed. Many blamed the government and its corrupt officials. Many pitied the people featured in the show. One Filipino commenter said the people in the show overacted so that western people would pity and give them help. As expected, he got a lot of criticisms from our fellow kababayans.

I wanted so badly to comment but I had too much to say so I saved my thoughts for this blog.

In the introduction, of all the things one would know about our country, Josh said he only knows about Imelda Marcos' 200 pairs of shoes!!

The jeepney driver that the show chose is not the poorest of poor but he is, like any other struggling Pinoy, works hard everyday to provide shelter, food and other needs of his family. He strives to make ends meet. As a Filipino, though small and strange looking, I think Mang Rogelio's house is quite decent. Of course, Josh thinks otherwise. He doubts the house's foundations and stuff. We Filipinos are smart and we have a way of improvising. The house might not look as pretty and presentable but I think it's strong enough.

It's quite funny when Josh described our tricycle as a half bike-half tin can!!! For a giant man ... he's ridiculously funny yet very endearing.

Aside from just jeepney driving through Manila traffic, other issues, such as our family planning system and the sad reality of PAGPAG, were also discussed ....

Anyway, Josh, though struggling, was able to accomplish his mission ~~ to drive our very own JEEPNEY ... (bravo!!!!)

When I'm in a jeepney, I never really bother thinking about the driver's hardship, I usually complain because half of butt is almost falling or my change is 50 centavos short.

I have a renewed admiration to our jeepney drivers ... (in fact, my father also once tried being a jeepney driver and so is my father in law) .... (Salute! Salute!)

To my fellow pinoys, who are struggling to make our lives richer and more comfortable, just continue what you're doing ... we'll get there .... eventually ....

What makes Bea's Papa special? Here's HIS story ...

My husband agreed to be a house husband after our daughter was born for about 2 years . It was a decision he had to make for our daughter. He was brave enough to shallow his pride and ego for her.

When I was pregnant, he quit his job and started a small business. During my pregnancy until I gave birth, the business was just barely doing okay. It was not as successful as we expected it to be. I was supposed to be the one staying home, but when Bea was 2 months old, I was offered a job, one with a better position and a better salary. We had to be practical, but at the same time, we couldn't entrust my daughter to anyone else. We both decided that I go back to work and he give up the business and be Bea' s daddynanny!

In our society, men staying at home were frowned upon. My husband had to deal with that and at the same time he had to deal with his own insecurities. Even if I say it was okay 'coz he has a job -- to take care of our princess ... he still felt bad for not bringing in some money in our family. Yet he was able to cope with it and did a pretty good job.

My daughter grew up well ... she was never sick ... she only went to the doctor for her vaccines. The Obsessive Compulsiveness of my husband came in handy ....

His patience finally paid of after 2 years when he was given an opportunity to start his own business. This time it was something that he really likes -- motorcycles!! And thankfully for 2 years now his motorcycle shop is doing well. ( I guess ... hehehe)

So thankful for the sacrifice he did for us ... I don't mind that my daughter's first word was actually "papa" ....

I also love this cake. I think, this is the best white forest cake I've ever tasted.

It's one of the best cakes here in Baguio.

It's not too sweet.. The cake is really soft.

And it's quite cheap, too (around 280 Php for a 10inch cake).

It's available at the bakeshop of Holiday Supermarket (Bokawkan Road, Baguio City).

I also like their banana bread (it's only 100 Php for one big loaf)

Happy Birthday Ate Wil!

This is for my sister, Wilma. I'm so happy to know that she reads my blogs. I know she's my number 1 fan. What she doesn't is that I'm her number 1 fan, too.

I think she's about 15 years older than me. I won't go deeper on the details 'coz that would reveal her exact age and so as mine.

We haven't really spent too much time together because she had to go the US when I was 9. We had few memories together, too few that I could even use my fingers to count them, but all will be treasured forever.

I was there when she graduated. I was 6 or maybe 7 years old. I think we ate at a Chinese restaurant called Star Cafe (It's family tradition --- birthdays, graduations or any other special day ~ it has to be Star Cafe). That time, I didn't know what graduation meant. I just had to go to the crowded Burgos Gym of SLU and wait for my sister's name to be called.

After passing her exams, my sister had to work in Manila. For me, that meant waiting and expecting Goldilocks cakes (brazodemercedes) and sweets (pulvoron) every time she comes back to Baguio.

She came home one day and she had bandages all over her nose. Worried and concerned little me asked her what happened and she said she had an accident! Now, older and wiser me knows the truth! (your secret is safe with me ... heheheh)

When she had to migrate to the US, I was so excited because that was my first time to go to Manila, stay at a hotel, go to SM Megamall, go to the airport, and visit Nayong Filipino. Later, I realized that her leaving the country meant I wouldn't be seeing her for years.

She had a vacation when I was in the 6th grade. I felt kinda cool in school 'coz I had a troll whose eyes lit up when you push its belly button and I was the only one who had a big bulky colorful Trapper Keeper!

She got married in the US (without us) and she came home when I was in college with my then li'l cute niece, Michelle. It's strange but I can't remember a lot about that vacation except that she was so patient with Michelle. When the li'l miss cried out loud, my sister would put her on the stroller and push it around the garage/garden until she stops or falls asleep!

She came back to have a church wedding, with a bit bigger and much more talkative Michelle and her husband, Kuya Jun. It was during this vacation that she met my then boyfriend, now husband, Chard. She was the first person in my family to meet him. The dinner we had with her will always be a much treasured memory of me and my husband.

The next time I saw her was the saddest event of our lives. It was when our father died. I was the one who broke the news to her. My husband and I were the ones who fetched her from the airport. On our way home, she told me she's glad I turned out all right. She said that she can't believe I'm all grown up with a husband and with a daughter. She said, in her memory, I will always be that li'l 9 year old she left years ago.

She may not have been there while I was growing but she has always been a sister to me ...

Happy Birthday ate Wil! I wish you'd win the lotto so that you could come home and build a house here and then we'd be neighbors!

Mommy Moments - Here Comes the Baby

The day my precious princess came would probably be the most memorable day of my life.

She was supposed to come out January 8, 2007 but she came as an early Christmas gift. I was scheduled for a prenatal on December 20 and after my doctor did the routine check, she said everything is okay and I should already expect and prepare for her after Christmas.

Happy that everything was fine, my husband and I celebrated! We had a Mongolian lunch! I think I ate too much and drank too much iced tea (something I didn't usually do during the whole pregnancy because I was too cautious) We then went to the mall and my husband had a sudden urge of buying new shoes. Big bulky me tagged along as we looked for shoes for the King! After finding the right pair, we went home, but later that afternoon, my sister-in-law told my husband that she has already bought Christmas presents for everyone. We haven't bought a single gift! We headed back to the mall to shop for gifts 'til the shops closed. I was so exhausted that day but was extremely happy.

I woke up 2am the next day 'coz I felt something strange. My waterbag broke! I woke my husband up and he did not know what to do. He was not sure if he's going to start the car or would just stay with me! Except for some watery stuff coming out ... I was actually okay. There was no pain at all! I managed to get dressed and get the "bag" (prepared by my excited mom-in-law a.k.a first time grandma)

While driving he was so worried because I don't feel pain. He said I should feel labor pains if I'm about to deliver a baby! That's really strange --- why would he wish me PAIN! Luckily, my nervous husband was able to drive me to the hospital. And the good news --- they said that she's coming ....

At around 5am ... my in-laws were in the hospital. I was still pain free! My doctor checked me around 9am. I started to feel tinee tiny pain which I pass to my husband by pinching his hand! It was only until 10 am that I started to feel PAIN .... real PAIN ... but the owner of the hand I'm pinching was nowhere in sight! I was only left with my mom-in-law ... I wished my mom was there but she can't come immediately 'coz she lives in another town. The PAIN continued until around noon ...

At around 1 pm ... I was ushered to the delivery room ... I walked!!!! My doctor then arrived around 2pm ... the princess is really COMING ... after a few big pushes .... one white princess was placed on top of my belly ... it was around 2:31pm!

And my life was changed since then ...

Mommy Moments - Preggy Tales

I was a bit nervous when I found out I was pregnant the first time. Then I felt really excited, super excited that we already have thought of a unisex name for it. Only to be devastated after I had my ultrasound. It turned out my pregnancy was a blighted ovum. As explained by my doctor that time, a blighted ovum, also called an anembryonic pregnancy, happens when for some reason the fertilized egg in the uterus does not continue to develop. I was supposed to be 3 weeks pregnant. I felt really bad ... I thought I might have done something wrong that caused that. Though, according to my doctor, it was natural, it could happen to anyone.

The second time, so as not to jinx it, I did not want to be super excited. But I was really happy to see those two lines. And was even happier to find out that it had a heartbeat!! A really fast and normal heartbeat!! I was so relieved. I was really cautious ... 0 drop of a alcohol .... 0 drop of cola and other sugary beverage .... 0 drop of coffee (ooopsss ... maybe I had a few drops) ... but I'm a bit guilty eating some ice cream (I think more than some ... ) I'm a very clumsy person (I trip, slip, slide, etc. ... frequently!!!) but ... amazingly ... I only tripped once during the whole pregnancy ...

9 months later ... I was blessed with one healthy and lovely baby girl ...

And this princess love hearing the fairy tale version of how she was born ...

4 years later ... she's still one healthy and lovely girl ...

I'm so blessed to be a mom and to be entrusted with this wonderful angel. Happy Mother's day to my mom, my mom-in-law, and my sisters!!! Happy mother's day everyone!!!

Pink Barbie!

My daughter, Bea, loves anything pink and anything that has Barbie on it. So, last Friday, when we went to the mall, even if she promised she won't buy anything, she was able to persuade us to add these two items in our shopping basket:

A Barbie cologne - which according to my expert daughter is NOT a cologne but a PERFUME!!!!
A Barbie toothpaste - which she really loves 'coz it's strawberry flavored.

Mommy Moments - Rainbow Colors

She's a Red Haired Bitch and I Hate Her

Finally, I got to read the 5th book of the Shopaholic series,

This is really long overdue 'coz I read the other 4 books, I think, more than a year ago. So thanks to my student, Isabella, for lending me her copy. Since I'm a stingy person, even if I really adore how Kinsella writes and Rebecca's character, I just patiently wait for someone to lend me a copy. Is there anyone who has a copy of Mini Shopaholic?

Anyway, let's talk about my title ....

The baby only came out on the last part of the book so the red haired bitch is really the main focus of the story.

Rebecca, being pregnant and all, heard about a celebrity obstetrician named Venetia Carter and begged Luke (Becky's husband) that they see her instead of their old doctor. Venetia turned out to be a young red haired and voluptuous doctor. And coincidentally, Luke's ex girlfriend! So how about that for a conflict!

Venetia acted friendly and kind and perfect around the unsuspecting Luke. Becky felt uncomfortable and had this instinct that Venetia was up to something. She even hired a detective (who followed the wrong guy!)

Becky later confided this to her designer friend, Danny, who was so inspired he made it into a t-shirt design like this ...

(Ooooopppssss ... sorry, just change blonde to red haired ....)

Venetia saw this and confronted Becky telling her that Luke's going to leave her (Becky) after she gives birth so that they (Luke and Venetia) can be together. Becky was about to give up but later found the courage to save their marriage by writing a 17 page (or was it 18) letter to Luke. Anyway, it turned out that it was only Venetia imagining things and the oh so charming Luke will never replace the ever so cute Becky.

I hated the red haired bitch while I was reading this. I think if there is a red haired bitch in my life, I wouldn't be as charming as Becky.

I love how Kinsella presents real life problems in a very funny way ...

Mommy Moments - Birthday Photo

I've always wanted a picnic party for my daughter. So last December 2010, we celebrated her 4th birthday in Camp John Hay. I prepared everything ... cupcakes, pink balloons, and a pink shirt dress that matches my princess' personality. She was so excited!

What I didn't prepare for was that swing hitting my princess and giving her bruises on her nose.

She was too sad to even blow her candles and smile for the camera.....

She didn't get to play with her guests ... she was just beside gramma all the time ....

She later played with her friends but she wasn't as energetic ....

But when we went home and she had time to really check her gifts ... she forgot all about the accident and she was back to normal as if nothing happened. She had crowns, sandals, dresses, crayons and books and she was so happy ....

The bruises are gone but I still feel bad when I remember this day. But I'm still thankful that I have a smart, healthy and lovely 4 year old ... that's the only thing that matters.

Writing for Mama Kat's Workshop

Prompt Number 2 :

Based on their personalities, what do you think your children will be when they grow up?

When my daughter, Bea, turned 1, one of my friends gave her a small magnetic drawing slate. Of course, that time, she was too young to use it. But after a few months, she was able to figure out how to use the slate's pen and the shaped magnetic stamps. The first shape she learned to draw was a circle. She'd fill the slate with big circles and small circles. I can still remember her chanting "big circle ..... small circle" until she fills the slate up. Then she'd ask me to erase everything and she'll start over again.

The slate was overused 'coz she preferred that over her other toys. We ended up buying her a bigger and better slate. She then learned how to add eyes, nose and lips to her "big" and "small" circles.

At the same time, she was exposed to Barbie fairy tales. She loves watching these Barbie videos over and over ... and over ... As she watches, she keeps an eye on the princesses' dresses. Her drawings evolved and the 'big' and 'small' circles then had frilly dresses.

And now at age 4, she had made dozens of dresses with different designs. Each design is so detailed ... from the sleeves to the skirt's curves and frills.

I want to capture every masterpiece she creates but before I get to click the camera, she suddenly erases it and starts with a new one. I bought her a drawing notebook but she prefers making her designs on her slate. So I figured I'll just let her practice on her slate until she's ready to conquer the world with her designs.

I'm going for

Prompt# 4 You stole WHAT!?! Spill it!

My sister, Ayyen, is 13 years older than me. I think she disliked me because she could have been the youngest had I not been born. So I ... uuummmm ... kinda .... sort of .... disliked her, too. When I was growing I was always envious of her stuff. Well, I was in elementary and she was in college, so she had more access to "cool" stuff and she also had this special ability of turning felt papers into really artistic letters and shapes. I wanted everything she has (I think ... ).

She had this Garfield stationery that I really liked. As far as I can remember it looked like this:

And it's bigger than usual stationeries that time. I believe I asked it from her but she said, "NO!" So I stole it. At first, I was so nervous I'd get caught, but when no one asked nor scolded me, I felt like the ultimate high-skilled thief. I showed it off at school and I ended up selling it to a classmate (hehehe). Now, I realized she might have known it all along but didn't question me. (Why???)

But now after 20+ years ...

I'm confessing ....

If I had an opportunity to get any question answered by a really credible psychic, I would ask :

Is 12/21/2012 really the end of the world?

After the movie 2012 and the recent tragedies happening, many are afraid of 12212012 . Many are starting to believe that it's doomsday. It's based on some Mayan calendar or some numerology thingy. But for me 12212012 is a very special day . It will be my daughter's 6th birthday. I don't want to sound selfish but why ... among all the dates possible and available ... why would they think the world would end on 12212012.

Four years ago, on December 21, I was blessed with a tiny princess. My life was changed that day so for four years now, I had made 1221 extra special for that princess. I can't imagine how devastated my princess would be if during her birthday party, the ground is shaking and breaking and asteroids are approaching .

I hope the psychic answers "no" to my question. Maybe there's a wonderful life waiting for us beyond this world but this world is so beautiful to be destroyed. I want my daughter to enjoy the beauty of life here on Earth way beyond just 6 years.

A Simple Taste of Happiness

I saw this coke happiness truck video a few days ago. It's a coke truck that gives out bottles of coke, flowers and some other stuff when you push the big red button. The concept was simple, the stuff they gave away were not that grand, but it made the people who got something and the people around happy. It made a huge impact on viewers like me. Viewing it made me really happy!

Maybe this was created for advertising and marketing purposes, but this was more than just selling coke. It shows that sharing happiness is easy. It shows that the simplest things can make us happy.

   the extra sweet smile of the woman who got a rose .....
   the twinkle in the boy's eyes when he saw the robot .....
   the laughter of the man who got about 6 bottles .....
   the way the woman pulled and hugged the teddy bear ....

These simple reactions made me click the play button over and over.

If everyone shares a tiny bit of happiness, our world would be extra wonderful. During this time of wars, tragedies and calamities, a simple taste of happiness is all need.

Mabini Street, Baguio City

Korean and Japanese Cuisine

THE FOOD

I love Korean food. I'm no Korean food expert but here in Baguio, I think Hodori is the most Filipino tongue friendly Korean restaurant. They also serve Japanese dishes and they're quite good, too. They serve 4 side-dishes and they're refillable.

Here are my favorites:
Porkchops - I don't know why they call it porkchops. They're not really porkchops.They're pork belly (bacon) with yummy spicy stuff. It's about 220Php. It already comes with a cup of glutenous rice. One serving is good for 2-3 people.

Tansuyuk - It's the Korean version of sweet and sour pork. They put chunks of apples in it. They really have a big "small" serving which costs around 300Php. This is good for 3-4 people. They also have a large "large" size which is good for 4-6 people. This is around 550Php.

Bulgogi - Korean beef barbecue. The beef is really soft and bursting with flavors. A dish for 2-3 people is also about 220Php and it also comes with glutenous rice.

Samgyeopsal - Well, what's a Korean restaurant without this slices of fatty pork belly!? The cooking part adds fun to the dining experience. They also serve garlic, green peppers, sesame oil and other sauces and spices that you can all put together with the cooked bacon strips ... wrap them with a lettuce leaf and swallow the whole chunk up.

Chicken Tepanyaki - This is my favorite among their Japanese dishes. They put lots of mushrooms in it which really gives the dish its scrumptious flavor. It costs 180Php per serving which is good for 2-3 people.

Crunchy Tuna Maki - It's really crunchy and yummy. I think it's the best among all their rolls. 8 pieces costs 100Php + (sorry, I forgot the exact amount)

THE SERVICE
The waiters and waitresses here are really friendly. When we eat here and they're not quite busy, they refill our side dishes every 5 minutes!!!! But even if they're very busy, they serve every customer courteously and graciously. I really like their service here.

THE RESTO ITSELF
It's located in a street that's connected to Session Road, so it's very accessible. It's not that big but each table is spacious enough. The seats are so comfy.

10 years ... yup ... 10 years ... since I said yes ...

My actual words were "Yes ... to all of your questions." Now, I'm thinking ... what did he really ask? I can't really remember what his questions were ... and if he really did ask me questions .... heheheh ...

Nonetheless, we're still here ... after 10 long years ... it is still us ... and will forever stay as us.

Our story is not a fairy tale. No glamor, fancy lights, twinkling stars, sparks flying ... just US.

It's far from perfect. It's imperfect but it's real.

I've cried pails of tears. I cried when it's bad. But most of my tears we're cried when it's good. I'm not really a wailing bitch but it's the US ... the zaniness of being US ... always makes me cry ...

We talk. Well, I'm the talker. But we talk ... we always do. I think that's why it lasted this long ....

It's comfortable ... everything is ... I don't really need to elaborate, do I? Ooopps ...

I'm blessed. Ours isn't always good but this is the best there is.

I'm so thankful 'coz I'm here because I want to .... I'm here because I love to ...

It was one hell of a ride but I'm so glad it's with him.

Looking forward to 10, 20, 30, 40 .... uhm 50? more years of craziness ...

The BLUE and BROWN project

This was my first project. This is my baby. I'm very happy with the result. It was very successful. I did not attend the main event. Oh, but I did have a glimpse of the post party ....

I started the blue and brown project last November 2010. It was under the strict supervision of my lovely friend whom I'll hide under the pseudonym Myleen (hehe). It started out as a simple blue project, I suggested the brown for the drama effect. It also started out as a secret project, which I still wonder why until now. Thanks to YM, FB and SKYPE, my boss, who at that time resides in an island somewhere in Australia, was able to boss me around (wink* wink*). After countless sleepless nights, hundreds of links shared, error messages popping out of my photoshop program, jpeg files sent and resent and sent back, a dinner-less night with my adorable assistant Amy, a sticky scissor and my sticky fingers, the biggest part of the project was done ...

For the rest of the project, I was more of a consultant .... Strangely, my boss actually listened to me ...
Thank you for trusting me. I'm sorry I wasn't there throughout the whole project (especially the main event, heheheh). But I know it was a successful project because of the smiles I saw during our "post project dinner".

If this project turns out to be the foundation of my future bread and butter, I will forever be indebted ....

so ... who's next?

I'm not artistically talented ... music hates me ... my feet ... arrggg .. never mind ... my hands can't do anything beautiful ... but I know how to spot a talent ...

One lazy evening, one of our friends showed this guitar boy's youtube video ... the viewers in our living room had strange reactions. I said, "Is that for real?" The OC King cursed and cursed and cursed again. He gave up. He accepted that he will never learn how to play the guitar. The rest of the viewers' jaws just dropped. He was too damn good ... everyone hated him. Well I secretly adored him ... hehehe

Christmas is over ... a few more days and it's 2011 ...
Resolutions ...
Everyone makes new year's resolutions and breaks them eventually ...
So I'll make plans ... huh ... what's the difference ...
Someone told me before that plans and goals should be written and, if possible, should be read daily ...
It'll make you stick to that plan .... So I'm posting my plans for 2011 ... please do the reading for me ... I figured the more people reading it ... the more I could stick to it and reach my goals ...

A. Fix myself
1. Got big ass and humongous thighs ... gotta trim those ... oh ... and my giant belly, too!
2. Fix my to the left ... to the right hair
3. Fix my to the left ... to the right eyebrows
4. Resuscitate my toenails
5. Clear my effing brain

8. Sleep earlier ... not early in the morning ...

B. Fix our house
1. Our desktop table is full of this SH** wires , cables and chargers ... they're sprawling everywhere ... crawling up the monitor... gotta trim those ...

3. My clothes need to evacuate from the closet ... hhhhmmmm .... garage sale?
4.The OC KING's motorcycle is in our living room ... I think it needs to evacuate, too ... but ... arrrggg ... please read this ... 100x everyday .....
5. The OC Princess's stuff is accumulating ... I think they're all evacuating from the department store to our house ... gotta guard our gate ..

Lazy Xmas

In about 13 hours, it'll be Christmas. I've got dishes to wash, mouth to brush, hair to shampoo and body to cleanse. So what the hell am I doing here...

I feel so lazy ... our bed's not yet made ... our house looks like a dump site desperately needing an incinerator. But, what the heck, it's a holiday! Why do people worry too much on holidays ... especially on Christmas. We fuss too much. This Christmas, I'm going to be lazy. I'll do everything super slow mo ...

Every Christmas, TV shows and ads, magazines, banners, even social network sites, are full of the Xmas spirit ... messages of love and happiness. Everyone's so busy -- I wonder why. Don't get me wrong -- I'm not the Grinch. I love Christmas and the whole package that comes with it. My butt's just too heavy to do anything ... I don't know where to start.

I hope greeting everyone with a warm MERRY CHRISTMAS would do. I'm so amazed that no matter how sad the whole year was for someone -- Christmas always makes it a little bit better.

I'm not making any sense -- I guess my brain's connected to my butt ...
