5.) Financial services firm whose managers have zero education on finance?

A financial services firm whose managers have no education in accounting and finance is
incongruous. They do not even know the difference between an operating expense and a capex, or debit from
credit. Our line managers come from different backgrounds some are Psych majors, some are nurses, some
are engineers. The financially literate branch managers are a minority. Besides, the FLP is only for two days.
Such a very short two-day course with a value-added financial education is a small but long-lasting act of extending the skills of our line managers.

Some people say that Facebook is a waste of time. I don’t think so, aside from connecting you to friends and family from both nearby and afar off, you also get to learn a lot of things from other people by knowing what they are reading and by their sharing of ideas, be it their original idea or something they picked up online.

Take this one for example, I’ve always been an advocate of “going green,” so whenever there is a nice cool, environmentally oriented idea that could help save me some money, it always gets my attention. Recently one of my Facebook friends posted a picture of how to make brooms out of plastic bottles, which is shown below.

The pictures are not so instructive and it might not even be very clear to some people, but at least it prompted me to search and know more about it online. The project really makes sense as it gives us one more option on what to do with plastic bottles. So instead of just recycling plastic bottles, they can now be turned into something more useful, brooms. Aside from it being made from recycled material, the plastic bottle brooms its is very durable compared to the usual brooms and of course very cheap so you will save a lot and will have more cash to buy your mother’s ring on mother’s day !  As of the time of this writing, I have not found a youtube video giving detailed step by step instructions on how to do it. If you find one, please leave a link on the comment box below.

The idea started out in Brazil by an organization called “A Rocha Brazil” a Christian not-for-profit environmental education and conservation organization. It is a member of the international A Rocha family and was established in Brazil in the beginning of 2006. It focuses on scientific research for ecosystem conservation, promotion of behavioural changes and establishing partnerships with governmental and non-governmental organizations to develop socio-environmental action. For the past few weeks, I’ve been reading a lot about reformed theology more particularly Calvinism. I got interested more about the subject when I started listening to the great expository preachers of today such as John MacArthur, John Piper, Paul Washer and others. I was intrigued why their theology was deep. Their verse by verse preaching style blessed me a lot mainly because it was filled with the Holy Spirit’s power and because of this it is scholarly, thorough and very expository.

I discovered that they were staunch Calvinist. Coming from a church with a very strong Arminian or should I say quasi-Arminian background we were “brainwashed” to be allergic to the words “Calvinism” or “election.” But I have changed these past few years in terms of my theological standing and I am a bit more Calvinist than Arminian, so I decided to do an in-depth study on the subject.

So for the past few months, I’ve been devouring a lot of books and materials on Calvinism and Reformed Theology. I’ve read online materials and tried enrolling at The North American Reformed Seminary. For some reason they did not act on my application for enrollment although in the emails, they said they are willing to accept me. I found another reformed seminary online; I recently got accepted at the London Reformed Baptist Seminary. This is the seminary run by Metropolitan Tabernacle, a church that was used to be pastored by the great theologians such as John Gill, Benjamin Keach, Arthur Tappan Pierson and most notably, Charles Spurgeon. Spurgeon is known as the prince of preachers and adored by almost all Baptist (both arminian and Calvinistic) I’ll be doing my online studies here for the next 4 years. I hope I can get to visit London in the near future and visit the church.

I’ve also been listening to a series of MP3 lectures by Dr. Daniel Curt entitled, “The History and Theology of Calvinism” The quality of the audio is not very good, but nevertheless, you can understand what he is saying. You can download the more than 70 hours of lectures on the link given. The lectures are very comprehensive, well researched. I believe this series should form part in every reformed seminary required listening list. I will probably write a review on this series of lectures soon. The best thing about this series of lecture is that its free! You can use your money to buy your favorite cleopatrachoice.

Today, there is a negative attitude towards the study of doctrine. This is understandable but not excusable. It is understandable because emphasizing doctrine has led to fruitless intellectualism, a proud and unloving attitude, fruitless speculation and unnecessary divisions. Also, studying doctrine demands hard work and change which many are not willing to make. It is inexcusable because the gospel we Christians are to proclaim and the faith we are to defend are rich in doctrinal content and Christian unity cannot be preserved and promoted apart from the study of doctrine. Also, how we worship and live depends on what we believe. For these reasons, we call on men in the pastoral ministry, those training for the ministry, and any key men in the church who preach God’s Word to join us as we study the Doctrine of the Christian Life.
